Jorus Akari got up slowly the next day, still aching somewhat from the previous day's training. He groaned as he got out of bed, then noticed that his roommate was out of the house... hmm... was he too drunk to stumble back home? Jorus Akari would have to find out, as he was socially responsible for his roommate at this point. What a drag, he was hoping to do some relaxing after the day before. He sighed as he looked up at the sky through the glass-less window. It was pretty overcast, so Jorus Akari knew his roommate's arthritic joints would be reacting to this.... so where could he be?
Jorus Akari jogged around town for a bit, surveying the area and building muscle mass and stamina. He needed to be able to survey the areas across Shima where his roommate might be. He wasn't worried for his roommate at all, just for whatever might await him with his roommate. A ton of angry bartenders demanding money? Hopefully not. Nevertheless, he had to be careful. He picked up some of his favorite weapon from the junkyard: roof shingles. Those things were so amazing in different situations. They were both light and aerodynamic. Well, it was time to get going. It would not be useful to meditate upon roof shingles.
He began by heading out to the library. It wasn't his favorite place in the village, but had its uses. For example, it had the village map book, which he would be using today. He made a few map copies, and began to cross-reference his dad's frequenting areas with "high risk zones" in Shima. He used tracing paper and graphite pencils and began to isolate zones where he would have a 96% chance of finding his dad. He then used advanced statistics to create a topographical error range around the suspected areas. There. Jorus Akari now had all the places that he needed to search in great detail. He took his plans back home to study some more.
A few minutes later, he was back in the slum house. He sat down at his bed (although it was little more than a mat on the bare floor) and laid out his plans. Well, there was the local bar right there in the slums. He would have to visit that place first. So, he got himself up and hied himself out to the bar. Hopefully, he would be able to find his roommate before any trouble started up.
On his way over buildings and whatnot to the bar, he took a nice, long, survey of the bad part of town. There were greasy children everywhere, and drastic ignorance hung like a mist in the air. This was a most filthy place indeed, and no person of great status lived here. Of course, Jorus Akari was not of very high status. He was... poor. He was probably the most low among Akari. Well, enough brooding on that sort of thing. Jorus Akari needed to find the local bar. He needed to keep his mind focuses, lest he drop into sloth and despondence.
He arrived at the bar, and peered in through the window. Hmmm... he didn't see any commotion. That was a good thing, bar fights in this area were a cause to hide, as the illiterate and uncultured men could cause quite a commotion. Jorus Akari usually left the slum area after there was a large drinking party. His roommate had been attacked with a knife at one point, but the police saved him. Well.... if there was one good thing about his roommate, it was that he was good in a fight.
However, his roommate was not at the bar. This was a significant disappointment, as this was the closest and most likely location to Jorus Akari's residence. Rather baffled, he went back home. He sat down for a bit, resting his legs after the excursion. Hmm.. well, he would have to look at that map again. He walked over to it, and examined it some more.
He examined it. Well... there was always that small gambling restaurant in downtown that his roommate frequented. Perhaps he could search there. So, Jorus Akari began to run, leaping over houses and buildings toward downtown. As he began to travel towards the center of the village, he noticed an increased amount of sophistication in the buildings and in the general quality of life of the people who lived in this area leading up to downtown itself. He also noticed not only the quality of the architecture, but its variety as well. Buildings appeared ever more diverse and aesthetic, not filthy and utilitarian like the buildings in the slums. Jorus Akari appreciated this part of town, but it was a bit noisy and crowded for him. He looked forward and saw taller buildings. Hmm... maybe he could visit those someday. But as of right now, Jorus Akari had a better mission. He needed to find his roommate before it was too late.
He walked into the gambling restaurant, and looked around. There was no one he knew well in sight, so he decided to look a little more carefully. He knew that he had to be thorough in order for this to work, so he searched carefully. He even looked in the back, where some barmaid was (quite skillfully) giving a drunken man a lapdance. This man was clearly not his roommate, so he snuck back out of the back rooms, and exited the building. Well…. Where could he look next? He could look in the red light district of Shima, but it might not prove fruitful.
Well, fortune did favor the bold. He went over to the dark side of Shimagakure. This place…. Was so dark indeed. It wasn’t the kind of literal dark that most people used, but the dark that was used more often in classic literature. The dark that meant ignorant, or evil. The dark that meant primitive, the primal evil that existed in mankind. The darkness…. The heart of darkness that represented the wild in all civilization. He needed to seek out the center of the heart… the septum that held it together… and puncture it, and thereby become the light in the darkness. Weren’t those the Akari clan words? “Become the light in the darkness”? And so far in life, he had failed to live up to those words. He had never become anyone’s light, not even so much as a spark. Darkness had surrounded him his entire life. He needed to become a lamp. No… he needed to become as the sun. That was his aspiration…. No… his Nindo, his shinobi way.
From this point forwards.... “From this point forwards, I shall be as the sun! The light in the darkness!” he spoke aloud. He would have to, for his own sake, for the sake of his village…. And for his own impact on the world. He rushed down the street, where a bunch of low-level ninja were waiting for him. Somehow, they had a sensory on their team, so they challenged him to a fight. Without qualm, he grabbed a steel pipe lying on the ground, and twisted on the wall over them, and knocked them out. He rushed onwards… “the light… I shall be the light!” He ran forwards, forgetting completely about his roommate. This would be the nigthat he would run through the red-light district, cleasing the darkness from it. And if he did not succeed, he would try the next day… and the next day… and the next. He would not give up until he became the perfect personification of light. Even if he had to create a jutsu that turned himself into light, he would do it. “I… am… the sun!”
Some muscular asshole low-life chunin turned the corner and confronted him, challenging him to a "real man's fight". Probably some stupid hotshot. Jorus body flickered behind him, and plunged the tube into the larger man’s back, killing him. He wiped out the man as he fell down. Was he going insane? NO. He was merely finding who he was. The light was everywhere, it needed no protection from anyone, and protected all who sought it. He would be that sanctuary in the darkness.
Even though the darkness encroached upon them he would shine it away. The sun’s light took 8 minutes to reach the earth from its distance, so he would take a while to become powerful…. But he would do it! “With my power…. I’ll become the world’s eternal light!”
He came to a slow stop. Well…. It would take him a long time to achieve his dream, but he was sure he could do it. He just needed people to help him become stronger. And, he needed to make the most of his opportunity. From what he had heard of his family lore, there was a light element that he could learn and master… from that point onwards, he would master it as much as he could. He would train it to the maximum and become light itself. At that point, his pinnacle of power would be reached and he could satisfy himself.
He walked home. Screw his roommate, if wanted the darkness, then he would be blinded by the light and would not be worthy of his prescence. He got back, and proceeded to perform several pushups on the floor. Whew, that was exhausting. He would have to work his constitution a little harder. He looked outside, and in the darkness, saw people attaching themselves to streetlights. Hmm… how curious that he hadn’t noticed that most obvious fact before….. it was, of course, not the lights, but the behavior of the people. It was right there before his eyes, and he had not noticed it. People were naturally attracted to light. It had always been that way, since the very beginning when archetypes in the human mind began to separate the pseudo morality of light and darkness. To people, since the beginning of humankind, light was “good”, and darkness was “evil”. Perhaps it was because only the nocturnal, scary predators came out at night. Regardless of what it was, maybe people weren’t so bad after all. They were attracted to good… and shunned away evil. Well… he would have to see. From that point onward, he would have to go around the world in search of people of the light. If there were people who were stronger than he was, he would have to persuade them to join him in his cause… if they were weaker, he could easily force them, or just as well ask them politely. Regardless, he would take the world by surprise.
He left his house, whistling softly. He didn’t know what he would do now, or if he would ever live up to what he had just thought about. He only knew that after so much excersize and meditation, he felt happy. He didn’t feel like being mean, only nice and charitable. The light…. It was omnipresent, everywhere. He leaped over the buildings and reached the center of town. Suddenly, he remembered something. Fire…. And lightning…. With those, he could…. A HA!
He rushed back to his house. Fire… and lightning… if he combined those, he could do it! He slowly began to knead and mix his chakra. He pressed his hands together, and a bright flash appeared before exploding. Agh… he would have to try harder. He tried it again…. And again… each time, almost getting there but not quite. Hmmm he would have to add more lightning. He did so, and…. He got light. What??? Yes! He had done it! He tried it again, this time with one hand. Lo and behold, a small light appeared in the palm of hand. It had the strength of a small flashlight, but it was enough. “I.. am the light.. that will drive away the darkness.” He murmured softly before turning the light off and heading in for bed. He had done it. He had actually done it!
As he drifted off to sleep, he dreamed deeply… he dreamed of light and darkness, of dark threads that twisted through the air, and of intense heat that drove away even the strongest of nightmares.
