Task: You find yourself in a small town in the middle of nowhere, not large enough to be even a blip on the radar of any of the major villages or anyone of note. The townsfolk are naturally distrusting of outsiders and as such have been nothing but cold to you since your arrival. However, you notice that the local tavern has a poker night, the prize of which is 500 ryo. Do you steal the prize before it starts? Do you play fair and square? Do you simply cheat in order to win? The choice, and the consequences, are yours.
The townsfolk were pretty amped up when Hayami arrived in town. Though they still gave her dirty looks, they were unable of hiding their excitement as they drank their teas in the tavern’s outside terrace and smoked their hand rolled cigarettes. Hayami’s dark hair was caught in the rubber band of the goggles that kept the desert’s sand and dust off her precious eyes, her dark, weaponized eyes. She slid a hand under the hood and pulled it away, before pulling at the side of the goggles away from her face and beneath her pointed chin, now that the houses provided additional protection against the dust and sand streams. She carefully made her way to the tavern, besieged on both sides by townsfolk and their side looks.
Inside it was cooler than on the outside; she made her way to the bar, on the right wall of the tavern, and asked for a green mint tea, and while the tea brew, she asked the bartender “so, people seem pretty excited about something. Know anything about it?” The bartender lifted his eyes from the boiling tea in between pours to address Hayami; there was an inherent kindness to him, although it lagged behind a slight suspicion. “Why yes, tonight’s poker night. Everyone’s anxious to come loose their money for the hope to win said money. You got money to lose too?”
Hayami considered her possibilities. She did have some money, but she sucked at card games, mostly due to the fact she had never played it. Might as well give it a go, not like she couldn’t get it back one way or the other. “Sure, bring it on.”
A few hours later, there were six people at the table, her making a total of seven players. She was now facing the door, with two people with their back to the bar at her left, two people with their backs to the door, and two people to her right with their backs to the window. Considering the square table they sat at, it was almost as if they didn't trust her at all.
Time came to play. Small and big blind did the honors of the house, betting took place, people asked for cards and rose their bets to the occasion when possible, folding when they intended to cut their losses short. Few pairs showed their face followed by trios, and once, in a miracle of a play, a full house. The ryo stacks kept shifting towards the man furthest from Hayami on her right. She became wary; the people of the desert had been hospitable to her, but she couldn't afford to lose a lot of Ryo. A set of noises bothered her throughout the game, and eventually, following a gut feeling, she got up, punched a whole in the floorboards behind the guy furthest on her left, and revealed a set of wires. When she yanked them, tiny sticks rang loudly from behind the winning gentleman's chair. "So that's why your gut feeling was so strong." Every man got up, irated, and grabbed the cheater. "Don't forget the barman, guys. He's the one pulling the strings, literally." Commotion set in, and men shouted left and right; Hayami threw a punch at one of them and a brawl started, with the barman and cheater unfairly outmatched. In the midst of the chaos, Hayami pocketed as much money as she could grasp with her calloused hands and long slender fingers and made out of the bsr as quickly as she could, screaming as a helpless lass with the sound of breaking chairs behind her. "Help me, help me", she would cry as she ran, and people outside made their way into the tavern to see what the commotion was all about. As she made her way out of town, she smirked at the odds of being able to use a cheater to cheat these men out of their money.
