Tanning Leather 1

Kouma sat in his house, taking care of his mother this morning, making sure that she was dressed properly, and essentially just being a responsible, if not a little mother-ish person, before his mother had to stop him from all of that nonsense, and rushed him out of the door. Kouma was a bit distracted right now, because he was going to go and continue his journey into the world of materials that could potentially increase the abilities of his puppets. He was already fairly proficient in making the puppets and tinkering with them, and it was really fun to Kouma, he was fascinated with the subject. Now, he had accepted a mission to go and tan some leather with the leather workers outside of the main area of the city. They had a small place tha6t was surrounded by a forested area that was close to the outskirts of the city, and this was where the mission was going to take place. Kouma made his way to the outskirts fairly slowly, as he had quite a bit of time before he actually needed to be at the location, but he had this fairly strange habit of wanting to start all of these missions he had been taking early, and so he ended up waiting around the are for the person that he was supposed to meet come up to him and ask him if he was ready. Sometimes the people would feel a bit awkward that he was simply sitting there watching them do their work before the mission, and so they started it early anyways, expecting the young genin Kouma to simply be acting like this so that the mission would be over faster, but in reality, it was always the opposite, and Kouma won them over with the child like optimism and curiosity that a lot of ninja had outgrown.

As Kouma was heading over there, there was a great sense of anticipation in his mind and this made him want to learn more and more. He would even get some of this special treated leather for his own use by doing this, so this was simply a bonus, learning something new. Kouma was almost skipping with how happy he was right now, but he reeled himself in when he was getting closer to the area where the hunters had their lodge that wenty out into the reserve to hunt the animals such as deer and elk that needed some population control because they would just keep breeding and go out of control, ruining the crops and the other plants that were in the reserve. This gave the hunters ample amounts of prey that they did not need to go very far to acquire, but it was still a bit of a chore, because a lot of the hunters needed to be skilled with the bow, or have some sort of ninja training. It was not completely unheard of for the academy students to complete their training, but instead of becoming a genin, they opted out of it because they wanted to take over the family business or what have you, and only registered for the academy for their military duty that they thought was quite important to them and the village.

Sentiments aside, however, Kouma had finally gotten to the area where the tanning racks were, as he started to see small plumes of smoke from the various fire pits around the area, as they would also smoke some of their meat, or cook it onj the spot sometimes if they were hungry. Kouma walked up to the person he was supposed to meet, which was a hunter by the name of Itsushi. The hunter greeted Kouma and seeing that the young genin in front of him was so excited to get started, he chuckled to himself and remarked about how most of the genin that come here simply do it for the money or the materials, and it was great to see an excited and fresh face here in the outskirts. Kouma was interested in the whole process, but they said they were not going out to kill any of the animals currently, so there was no reason for Kouma to think about actually killing them, and he only needed to worry about the skinning and the actual tanning of the leather on the racks. Kouma did not even need to be a part of the blood draining process, as this was something that happened before he got here, and they were going to work on the almost completed materials today now that a genin was here, as the other processes were long and boring, and something that would take far too long in the span of a single mission, so this was a good compromise.

Kouma walked with the hunter when they were explaining the process, and it seemed fairly straight forward. They could simply skin the animal, which was different for each game animal that had been hunters. Then they simply needed to dry the skin, before the bits of flesh that were stuck to the skin needed to be scraped off. This would cause the skin, which was actually the hide of the animal, to harden. It would never turn as hard as a rock, so it would still be quite pliable when it was scraped on the rack. Then all you needed to do was let it dry out the rest of the way, before re-invigorating it with some boiled water, then dry it once more. The process was fairly simple, but not  alot of people could do it properly, simply because not everyone could scrape everything off of the leather the first time, but Kouma was very precise and diligent. He had messed with extreme precision before with his puppetry mechanisms, so he knew how to do things that were very small, and see most of the minute details. After scraping it off and doing the other processes, such as putting it in the boiling water, that was basically it. It was over and done with in a little bit more than twenty minutes after the scraping. Kouma bid them farewell before heading out.
