What are some of the things that are in store for the young Uta? Nothing really beyond some meager task that he decided to undertake. What could that task possibly be? A simple toll collection task on some small bridge for a local crime boss. How did he get roped into this? Well that’s what is about to be told.
Uta woke up inside the room he had rented out for the night after winning a poker tournament and getting some extra ryo for his troubles. He could have easily stolen the money or cheated but he just as easily won it fair and square as poker was a game of luck and skill and he was very good at reading others when it came to stuff like this. After all you don’t make it long in the criminal underworld without learning which fights to take and which to bail out of. So today was just another day for the wandering criminal and once he had stretched and got dressed for the day he made his way to the bottom floor and ate some breakfast, it was some meager sausage and potatoes but he was more than happy to simply have hot food to eat first thing in the morning. Though he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with the rest of the day, he could look for some more work as this town was bigger than the last one he had been too so he was sure someone around here needed some help.
Once he was done with his food, Uta went looking around town for some work to do and with a lot of denials towards the young man probably due to him being an outsider but also due to his weird tattoos and strange looking eyes he finally stumbled into a group of burly men who could have had a better interaction with some soap by the smell of them, they looked him up and down and with some toothless smiles offered to take him somewhere that he could earn some money. A calm smile and an agreeance later they took Uta to a basement of some building where it was filled with smoke and looked to be a drug den of some sort. A large man the size of a ox sat in a pile of fine rugs and cushions smoking some kind of substance looking at Uta as he entered, “I hear you have been looking for some work to do?” The man said with a deep voice, “I need a man to do some simple toll collection for my bridge today.” He offered, he had already checked in on Uta’s background which was basically nothing beyond some interaction with some local gang a few towns over. “I’ll pay ya for your trouble as long as you do what you are suppose too.” He finished with as he dragged on another hit of whatever it was he was smoking.
Uta looked over the group and it seemed that this person was probably the head honcho of the crime groups around here, There wasn’t anything wrong with getting on the good side of these types of people as it made work in the future easier and gave him some much needed ryo to finance the wandering criminal’s journey, so with a shrug Uta Agreed to the work. With some much interaction on what was expected, the amounts to be collected and where the bridge was among some other things like call and responses. Uta was sent on his way to do the task he was being paid to do.
The bridge in question wasn’t far away from where he had been inside the underground drug den, it was a bridge that span a fairly large and deep river, it also seemed to be the only bridge that lead directly between two of the towns so there was a good bit of foot traffic on it. Which is why the crime boss had set up a toll there to enforce his influence and gain some more ryo. It had been a long time since they had started this whole business so most people as they didn’t have anyone to stop said toll or protect them found it easier to simply pay the toll and go about their day as the crime boss’s gang also acted as a public order situation. One of those few times where having criminals run your towns actually kept it safer than not. Uta was kind of surprised to see such an accepting situation from both sides and decided to keep that in mind for any possible endeavors of his own. After all if he wanted to make a name for himself at some point he would need power and the ability to enforce his will and leading those under him would be a skill he would need to train just like his others.
The day went on without much to think about or even worry about as he simply had to sit at the bridge and make sure to take the toll from every person who came to use it, there was another person on the other side of the bridge to collect that side and it went smoothly for the whole day. Nothing besides some grumbling from the younger kids but surprisingly some kind words from the elderly it seemed that the crime boss actually allowed those who were in the old age to have a reduced rate though these people had to have written permission for proof. “Hmm, so he takes from those who can actually work and allows some kindness to show to those who are to old to work.” Uta thought to himself, this was another facet that he enjoyed about his traveling lifestyle he got to see all these varies and different situations from all kinds of people. Uta was sure had he stayed on the mainland with the rest of his family he wouldn’t have met any of these people or experienced so much as he has already.
With the sun dipping beyond the horizon it was time to switch his shift with the next person who would be collecting tolls from those who tried to cross at night it seemed this was done by those who the Crime boss really trusted as this was the time when people would try to swim across the river under the cover of night. Uta didn’t mind as he was already going to get paid and that’s what he left to go collect. Once he received his payment Uta went about his business going the opposite direction of the bridge as he didn’t want pay the toll himself and because he wanted to continue his trip across the Key country.
