Waking up to a very foggy day outside, Nemui got prepared for a long day ahead as he and three others were assigned a long series of missions, those three being Izu, Heifu and Heibon'na. They were mostly related to protecting civilians and crushing dissent, two things that accomplished the same goal, really. First up was a mission to investigate one of the local bathhouses, its owner had recently been complaining about their competitor, something about threats and harassment. Secondly, they would be expected to escort a business man and his wife that also experienced similar circumstances. Then, last but not least, a merchant who was.. also.. on the receiving end of harassment and threats. Nemui would have found this to be a very odd coincidence but a secret list of missions was also provided.
After another team conducted some investigation on the civilians and their complaints, disturbingly they found evidence of someone or several people, working behind the scenes to orchestrate everything. Accompanying this information were the circumstances surrounding someone they captured in the act of sending threatening mail. When interrogated the suspect couldn't remember how or why they were caught in the act of committing a crime. It wasn't uncommon for civilians to be manipulated by ninja and the majority of them had no defence against Jutsu; still, this wasn't a normal occurrence. With so many businesses and people reporting similar circumstances and this civilian's testimony (or lack thereof), the only conclusion that could feasibly be drawn was that a criminal organization had infiltrated Kirigakure.
With the disguise of their missions to simply be resolving civilian disputes, they were in reality expected to find the people responsible at the same time. This would naturally require a great deal of caution and discretion as to not spook their targets. It was also unknown whether or not the criminals had infiltrated Kirigakure's ranks, this was the reason their missions to simply protect civilians were provided as public knowledge to those involved; meanwhile their true intentions were kept a secret that only the most trusted servants of Kirigakure's ninja corps were privy to. This information was disclosed in a secret letter sealed together with their mission statements and upon reading it, each of them would no doubt have thoughts on the matter.
Nemui's initial reaction was to question why he of all people had been given such an important task, although he couldn't really ask anybody about it and eventually forced himself to accept his circumstances. Whether or not his team mates were also prepared to go on these missions didn't cross Nemui's mind; his faith in the skill of others far surpassed his own self-confidence. After packing his gear and getting dressed in clothes that wouldn't reveal he was aware of the danger they faced, Nemui left his apartment. The fog outside only allowed a visibility of roughly ten meters, a serious inconvenience given the tasks at hand. If they were lucky it would clear up in a few hours but their missions couldn't wait that long either way.
During his walk towards the initial meeting spot, Nemui recalled when Heifu expressed in no uncertain terms her distaste for Izu. This thought now plaguing his mind, the boy quickened pace in the hopes that if they began fighting he could intervene. Alas, he would be too late. By the time Nemui arrived the two were already there and whatever dispute they had was already resolved, if you could describe it that way. Waving to the other three, Nemui didn't have much to say but he would suggest getting a move on to their first mission, investigating the bath house. While its owner had complained about a rival business owner a few days prior, allowing time for the other team's investigation, they were not aware of the developments that had taken place the night before.
When finally arriving at the street leading to this establishment, the four of them would be confronted by a street blockade, cordoning off the area they sought to reach. Approaching the guard, it wouldn't be difficult to convince them to allow passage and they'd also be informed of the situation that quickly developed earlier. While the bath house was closed several shadowy figures were reported by civilians in the area, observed to be entering the establishment and only leaving several hours later. It wasn't known what they did while inside and so to protect the populace nobody was allowed to go near it. Hearing this put Nemui on edge and he began looking around, trying to spot any suspicious individuals that may be waiting for them to get close.
Unfortunately he wasn't able to see anybody due to the heavily obscuring fog and begrudgingly would make his way toward, then inside the bath house. Even if somebody were nearby that seemed out of place, to do something about it right now would put their investigation in jeopardy. So if another member of the group had spotted somebody they would have been best off sharing the information discreetly. Immediately after passing through the establishment's doors it was evident that explosive tags were set up everywhere. This was not because the explosive tags were visible but rather due to faint Chakra signals coming from beneath rocks and other obstacles lining the pathways. Without knowing the trigger that might cause them to go off, checking the first one would be the most dangerous step of this mission.
Nemui knew he didn't have many good options for containing an explosion in the event that even approaching could cause them to detonate. If somebody else had a good idea for testing the waters, so to speak, he would go with that. Otherwise, Nemui would suggest that he simply proceed with checking a fairly isolated Chakra signal, so if it did explode he could either run away or potentially reduce the blast radius using Willow Cannon. This would put him in more danger and still cause a lot of damage to the establishment so it wasn't preferable. Whichever option they'd eventually decide upon, he would comply with. If the group did decide to just wing it and investigate one of the Chakra signals they would find, much to their relief, that the explosive tags did not detonate immediately.
Whoever set the explosive tags had either done so incorrectly or they were unable to detonate them currently. Either way, Nemui and presumably everybody else would immediately get to work disarming them. Some would be found to have tripwires that complicated things, although simply removing the explosive tags from the equation after discovering the tripwires was a workable solution. Furthermore, it was possible the tripwires were the primary method in which they'd intended to trigger every other non-rigged explosive tag; doing so would allow more people to filter inside the bathhouse before the detonation could occur. In the end a total of roughly two hundred explosive tags would be disarmed, for Nemui's lot he would rip them to shreds before pocketing the pieces with the intention of handing them in later.
The sheer volume of them would heavily imply that shinobi had to be behind the attack and so, to further their efforts investigating the suspected criminal organization, it would become clear they should interrogate the rival business owner. If he didn't have answers pertaining to who set up the explosive tags they would be forced to continue having gained nothing. So as the group reported their success in both finding and disposing of the explosive tags planted throughout the bath house, they would also enquire as to the man's whereabouts. Although Nemui would leave this up to another member of the group and while they spoke to the barricade guard, he would observe the man for any strange behavior. At that moment however, the owner of the establishment they were just in emerged from the fog.
As Nemui was not busy speaking to the guard he would immediately approach the new arrival who began to introduce himself. "Ah, hello. You must be the ones responsible for securing my property." The man assumed before continuing, "Is it safe for me to go inside now then? I have a lot of.. Work, that needs to be done." Feeling as though his sudden appearance was suspicious and likely, not alone in this train of thought, Nemui would sense for the man's Chakra. Despite his suspicions, nothing seemed off about him compared to a regular civilian, perhaps he was just rude. Thus, feeling as though it may provide some information to question the man, Nemui began talking to him. "You remember what you reported was happening a few days ago?" Suspecting the man's memories or actions may have been altered, he asked this vague question.
In response the man threw his arms up while answering "Of course I do, that trashy bath house owner near the slums kept threatening me and my establishment's wellbeing. That was when I came to seek help from your lot. If this situation were taken care of sooner they wouldn't have had the opportunity to cause such a disruption." The man's face grew visibly redder during this outburst and furthered Nemui's opinion that he was just a rude individual. The boy would quietly remark to the man "Alright well, we've taken care of everything in your establishment. It appears some ruffians broke into your establishment and they made a bit of a mess, probably just some drunkards. I doubt that your competition had anything to do with it." Nemui offered this fake story to downplay the severity of the situation as one of their missions expected them to ease the public's fears.
The man however didn't want to buy it, his face growing redder by the second. "You expect me to believe this was just some random happenstance!? I'll be reporting you and your colleagues-" Before allowing the man to finish his sentence, Nemui stepped in swiftly and placed a hand on his left shoulder, using Jotun Grip to apply a significant amount of force. "I'm telling you what you're going to say when people ask you about this incident. If you spread any information that doesn't align with what I told you, we'll be seeing each other again very soon." Nemui's small stature did nothing to assuage the man's fears while the pressure on his shoulder became unbearable, he'd quickly relent, answering with a now panicked voice. "Okay fine please.. stop." Then, seeing the man appeared to understand the message, Nemui released the grip on his shoulder and smiled.
"Good man, we won't keep you any longer." The boy gestured for him to leave and as he did so, would continue staring at him until he disappeared from view into the bath house. Despite these actions, Nemui wasn't comfortable threatening a civilian, he only sought the lesser of two evils, believing that having the man spread rumors of what happened could bring further trouble to his doorstep. Having finished speaking to the man he would rejoin the others; when their talk with the guard was finished he would have provided the rival business owner's location. Surprisingly the man was left to run his business but it was likely another team was monitoring him for suspicious behavior. Nemui at least was very curious to see what this man could have to say and would make his way there, preferably but not necessarily accompanied by everyone else.
Along the way he would keep a suspicious eye on their surroundings as best he could, given the fog still lingered. However, despite his best efforts to spot any suspicious activity or even movement in the fog, Nemui would fail to notice anything during the walk. Upon arriving at the location of the rival establishment or rather stumbling upon it with some vague directions in the low visibility, Nemui at least would approach the front door and knock several times, loudly. A shout echoed from the other side of a frightened sounding man, "What do you want with me?!" Taken aback slightly, the boy would answer calmly. "Can I come in please? I tripped in some mud and need to get clean." The man however was having none of it and immediately responded, "Go away! We're closed.." His voice growing quieter as he whimpered.
It seemed fairly obvious the man feared for his life and, after looking to the rest of the group to confirm what he was about to do, Nemui launched his shoulder into the door. Despite its sturdiness the door gave way with a surprising amount of ease, implying it had already been broken at least once before. Nemui immediately spotted the man on the other side, cowering behind a statue. That wasn't all however, as splashes of blood also decorated the floorboards leading further inside. In response to the ruckus he'd just caused, dozens of footsteps could be heard rushing out to investigate, the familiar sound of weapons clanging together accompanied them. Confronting Nemui and whoever joined him were a group of bandits twenty-seven men strong with swords, spears and modified farmer's tools.
They didn't appear very strong and the boy's mind was made up the moment he saw them, none of them would be killed by his hand. Instead he had every intention of capturing the group so they could be interrogated. He was especially concerned with the possibility they may have been innocent farmers being manipulated. With no warning, Nemui rushed forward into the bandits' midst to confuse them and make it more difficult for any of them to organize a coordinated attack. From there the boy would begin disarming the men whenever he could and knocking them unconscious if the opportunity presented itself. Along with whoever accompanied him, the fight would be over very quickly. As the fighting would finally come to an end, Nemui would grab the closest thing to rope available and begin binding the hands and feet of the bandits.
Someone else would be required to question the bath house owner but with his terrified state it was unlikely they'd learn anything. After reporting the incident to the nearest guard post they would cordon the area off and take the bandits into custody, along with the business owner. It wasn't clear why so many men gathered there in the first place but Nemui and the others couldn't spend more time finding out. Their remaining missions to escort a couple whose lives were threatened and stakeout a merchant's house would have to come first. The time would be midday when they'd eventually arrive at the business man's home. Knocking on the door, a butler would come forth to answer it and allow Nemui along with anybody else inside. While being escorted the butler would explain, "My master has been waiting for you, I'll inform him of your presence if you could please wait in the loungeroom."
Seeing no problem with this, Nemui obliged and sat on one of the couches to wait. It wouldn't be a terribly long wait thankfully as the butler went up the stairs and only a few minutes later, both the business man and his wife descended. "So sorry to have kept you all, thank you for coming." The man addressed them before introducing himself, "My name's Shigeru and this is my wife Hana, we'll be in your care." With this, both the man and his wife bowed respectfully. Nemui in turn bowed while introducing himself, "My name's Nemui, we'll take good care of you." The others would also have the opportunity to introduce themselves if they wished and ask the couple any questions before setting out. Once they did finally exit the house, Shigeru and Hana indicated the way they wanted to go for the shopping they intended to do.
Nemui walked in front of the pair as his strength lied in attacking things head-on, so he would periodically stop as they turned corners until receiving directions. Unabated they would manage to reach the first shop, an extravagant jewelry store in Ginza district. Nemui accompanied the couple inside, introducing himself to the person running the store while enquiring if anything strange happened lately. He'd hear a story of a stray dog causing a horse-drawn carriage to crash but nothing informative. Once the couple finished their business he would accompany them back out of the store and they'd lead the group, whoever was still present, along to their next destination. During the walk, Shigeru began talking to Nemui about his influence in Ginza District, believing that to be the reason for the harassment he and his wife received.
Nemui could not explain to him the severity of the situation at hand and did his best to seem agreeable with the man's assertions. Once again they'd arrive at the next store safely, although he wasn't aware if the others may have encountered trouble. As things stood, he was the only one entering the store this time around with the couple. That didn't have to mean some obstacle got in the way of the others but Nemui felt a bit worried nevertheless. Repeating the cycle, he'd approach the store worker and introduce himself while asking about if anything strange happened lately. This time around the person he spoke to gave quite a bit of thought before answering. "You know, lately some of my customers have seemed a bit dazed, like they're sleep walking. I can still talk to them and they come in to buy things but they're very unresponsive."
Nemui considered this information carefully and it certainly lined up with the theory of civilians being under somebody else's control. He'd calmly ask, "Any customers come to mind in particular?" To which the store worker answered, "Well, the couple you're with right now actually came in about five days ago acting that way." Nemui tried not to show it but this answer caused him great concern as he now wondered if they were being led astray. "Probably just some fancy new medication with side effects." He'd quickly say to the worker before stepping away, rejoining the couple whereupon he wished to test a theory. After getting close enough to speak quietly without being overheard he'd say in a hushed tone, "Where's next on the list?" Shigeru looked at him oddly along with his wife before answering, "A place down there."
The man and wife pointed but couldn't seem to explain where it was they had to go, so Nemui pressed them again. "Alright so a place that way, what are you buying there?" With the same confused expression Shigeru answered once more, "I.. don't know." The couple appeared to become even more confused the longer this conversation continued and the boy, worried about his peers would put his arms around them both. "Come with me." He'd demand of them and surprisingly, receive no pushback. Quickly exiting the store, Nemui looked around for his team mates and if any were nearby he'd explain what occurred inside. If anything had occurred to the others while he was guarding the pair inside, he'd also be interested in hearing about that. Afterwards he'd escort the couple to the nearest guard post where they could be looked after and interrogated for further information.
All in all, it didn't seem like anything was going to plan but he hoped their third and final mission might provide some better insight. Making their way to the last mission's location, it was an isolated shop with baked goods on offer. Why anybody would want to attack or threaten such an establishment was anybody's guess. Nemui figured if anything they'd learn more by doing the mission instead of speculating. Arriving at about three in the afternoon, the fog would finally let up. Their goal here was to observe from outside for any suspicious individuals or unusual activity. The owner of the shop reported being threatened, harassed and vandalism. Due to the belief that a criminal organization, potentially comprised of current or former shinobi was behind these incidents, Nemui would hide roughly fifty meters away on top of a building overlooking the area.
He didn't have any equipment to hide his Chakra signature after all, and so he wanted to remain at a distance that would not give away the others if his location were exposed. Watching the area from his position, Nemui would make a mental note of the civilians passing by, what they wore and any other features he could identify. The majority of people simply walked past the business without giving it a second look while a few entered and left with their baked goods. From his position at least it didn't appear anything nefarious was happening and Nemui began to think whoever they were chasing had caught on. What he could not see however was the back of the property where one or more of the others would have a clear view of. Even if they did notice anything, Nemui was stuck in his position until a situation called for him to move.
In the end though, nothing from his perspective required attention and he didn't hear any calls for aid. After six hours of observing the property Nemui would hop down from his position and rejoin the others. Meeting up with them he would describe everything he saw, or didn't see. Nobody entered that didn't exit shortly after with baked goods and the people he saw walking past didn't linger or cause trouble. After providing his disappointingly uninformative observations, Nemui would also hear what the others observed. While they had encountered a lot of strange things today it seemed like there could be no resolution just yet and it was already getting late. Nemui would suggest they turn in and resume their investigation first thing in the morning as there just wasn't anything else they could do at the moment. After arguing this point if necessary he would retire towards his apartment.
On the journey back he'd think about the odd behavior exhibited by the civilians, attempting to understand why the people acting that way were chosen. Some of them were of a high status and that made sense but others were practically nobodies. For what reason they targeted the bath house and whether or not the bandits they'd found were connected with this criminal organization to begin with. Nemui just couldn't make sense of the actions on display and assumed there must be something going on behind the scenes, surely. The boy would arrive at his apartment midthought whereupon he'd decide to stop thinking about it all and attack the subject with a fresh mind the next day. Stumbling into his room, he'd quickly get undressed and retire to bed.
Concluding the long day of missions Nemui found himself laying down while attempting to sleep, instead being completely enamored by thoughts of how he might improve his Taijutsu prowess. While he had a lot of techniques available, his experience in applying them was severely lacking. The obvious answer would be to spar with his peers but after suffering a loss to Izu, he still didn't feel like that experience taught him very much. So, disheartened about these circumstances he'd toss and turn before eventually giving in to exhaustion. What only felt like seconds would pass before Nemui suddenly heard a knock at his door; coming to the awful realization that his sleep had no accompanying dreams, the boy rolled out of bed before trudging over to see who knocked.
With his door creaking open, he looked out to see a large man fully dressed in Buddhist monk attire. The man held a small box which he'd press towards Nemui while explaining, "This is for you, inside you'll find information pertaining to some troubling individuals that need to be investigated and dealt with, at least, everything that's currently known about them." The man's voice was monotone and Nemui understood he shouldn't ask any further questions but rather, just look inside the box for orders. So he'd nod to the man and answer, "Alright, thank you, I'll do what I can." The man gave Nemui a judgmental look before adding, "You'll be joining three of your peers, my colleagues are also making deliveries as we speak."
Then he'd walk away, allowing Nemui to make of that as he wished. The boy simply believed this meant team mates were picked that would accompany him for another series of missions, but in reality it was something far more sinister. At this same time, three other men also wearing Buddhist monk attire would deliver the same boxes to Heibon'na, Heifu and Izu; their own explanations matching the same that was given to Nemui. Sitting with the box, he couldn't sense any Chakra coming from it and so began to unsuspectingly open the lid before.. Blackness. Coming to, Nemui had no idea what just happened but felt extremely dizzy and numb. A brief look at his surroundings revealed something truly bizarre as the boy then realized where he was.
Nemui's apartment was located on the second floor of a complex and during this observation he noticed there was solid ground beneath him; in fact, he was sitting in the middle of the road that passed by in front of his apartment. Recognizing the building he was facing to be across the street from it, Nemui leaned on his left arm to turn around but it suddenly gave way as he fell onto the dirt. Not sure why this happened, he used his other arm to get back into a sitting position before lifting his left hand. It wasn't there, well it was, but not where it should have been. Nemui's forearm was bent backwards as though some tremendous force snapped the bone inside, although the fleshy exterior had also experienced some trauma as he noticed burns from the tips of his fingers up to his elbow.
Despite seeing injuries which he clearly shouldn't have, Nemui still failed to process his situation and looked over to his apartment, where it used to be. His room, those adjacent and below, all were gone. If the other three had also opened their boxes soon after receiving them they too would be suffering from the explosion triggered from doing so. Nemui didn't have time to consider their wellbeing at the moment however, as the shock he was experiencing began to wear off and the pain from his injuries manifested in kind. His left arm was broken and badly burned, his right hand was burned though not as badly and it also suffered no broken bones. Nemui's abdomen meanwhile had received a tremendous amount of force from the blast which sent him flying into the street.
Though he could not remember doing so, he knew that when the blast occurred he must have instinctively activated a technique to defend himself, otherwise he would already be dead. So, gathering his courage, Nemui performed a set of handseals with his right hand before placing it down on his left arm. He'd use the technique Healing Hands at this point which twisted his arm back into place, slowly mending it. All Nemui could do was grit his teeth until the pain finally subsided, his injuries mostly taken care of. Now with a clearer head he began to think of what other three may have been attacked, realizing who the targets were most likely to be based on recent events.
While he hoped they wouldn't have fallen for the same trick, it was also possible they could have taken long enough to hear his box explode first, even so far in the distance as they may have lived apart. If that were the case, surely they wouldn't have opened the boxes they too received, or at least this was the wishful thinking Nemui had. Once his dizziness would finally subside he'd gradually stand up and at the same time footsteps rapidly approached. Nemui's head spun to look in their direction just in time to duck as a blade swung past where his neck would have been. The boy rolled aside to gain some distance while looking at his attacker, the same man that delivered an explosive box earlier, naturally. As the man sighed with frustration he'd turn and look at Nemui callously pointing his blade at the boy.
The dots connected as he began to speak, "Why couldn't you just die and make this easier for us?" The man questioned Nemui and before the boy could give it any thought he'd go on the offensive once again, striking down vertically and forcing the boy to jump out of the way. So far at least it appeared the man had no ninja training but that changed quickly. While dodging the man's strikes, Nemui watched as he began performing handsigns with one hand and swinging the blade with his other. Unsure of what technique he was about to use, the boy realized he couldn't continue staying on the defensive and with a solid kick off the ground, launched himself into the man's personal space. Nemui attempted to punch him in the gut but the man stepped aside while swinging for the boy's legs.
Barely, he'd move backwards in time to avoid the loss of both legs before slamming his back against a wall. The man seeing this opportunity to corner Nemui rushed forward with a thrust of his blade. Nemui swung his right hand aside to deflect the blade but with a swift feint, the man's blade circumvented his hand and continued thrusting into the boy's right thigh. Exhaling through gritted teeth, he'd immediately respond by swinging both hands forward, producing a vacuum of air pressure with the Willow Cannon technique. Seemingly aware of the boy's abilities, the man stepped back in time to avoid the blast while withdrawing his blade from Nemui's thigh. With twenty meters now separating them, the boy attempted to distract his opponent by initiating a conversation.
"What's your goal here, just to kill me?" Nemui's voice was ragged, having only recently been blown up and now stabbed in his thigh, the situation was rapidly becoming something more than he could handle. Unfortunately though, the man didn't bite and instead rushed in for another attack. Attempting to buy himself more time, Nemui formed the unique handseal to initiate the Daytime Tiger technique. The giant tiger's head emerged from him and rushed forth at his assailant, pushing him backwards. Nemui couldn't afford to have it explode on ground level however due to the civilian population and would drive it upwards, hoping it captured the man. Of course it wasn't this easy and while the tiger's head launched upwards, the man came into view standing below it, once again rushing straight at Nemui.
"Get a life will you?!" The boy shouted while taking a running stance. If the man wanted to charge head-first into him, he would do so in kind. Pushing through the pain in his thigh, Nemui's body surged with Chakra as he launched forwards into the Crashing Thunder Charge technique. Simultaneously the man used a technique he hadn't seen before and in a flash the two collided. Nemui felt the man's blade as it impacted his abdomen but failed to pierce his skin. Meanwhile he pushed his entire body weight into the man's chest shoulder first before driving his weight downwards, slamming the man back-first into the road. Without waiting to see if the man was incapacitated, Nemui immediately followed this up by using the Cloud Shotgun technique, repeatedly punching the man's body further into the ground.
Dust and blood covered the scene until he could no longer see what his punches were hitting. Eventually Nemui stopped out of pure exhaustion, panting and coughing he'd stumble out of the dust cloud. Simply by looking at his fists he could assume the man was dead by the blood coating them. This didn't really help their overall situation as he'd found out nothing more about the purpose behind their actions. The man he fought in particular also seemed very limited in his abilities, relying mostly on his sword with a scant few techniques mixed in. If there was someone that could manipulate the thoughts and actions of others it would have to be one of the three targeting Izu, Heibon'na and Heifu. Nemui could tell however, the injury to his thigh required proper medical attention and he'd limp to the hospital immediately.

Re: Suspicious People Doing Weird Things
Sat Feb 03, 2024 9:35 am
Heibon'na had seen a long list of missions being rolled out before her as she prepared for the day. She had signed up for a wild day involving quite a lot of tasks set before her. There was watching over a showing spree of some capacity, dealing with a disinformation campaign, and then working towards dealing with bandits. Yet that was only the first half of the planned list of missions to undergo. There was then after all those were accomplished, handling a paranoid merchant, investigating a bomb in a bathhouse within the village of Kirigakure no Sato, and then finally remedying some defectors of the village. Gearing up, she began the morning with an assortment of stretches and assessed her personal library of techniques for what would be beneficial for the needs of the task. There was still a lot for her to learn to fill in what she needed to have but that did not deter her from putting her best foot forward.
Leaving her place of residence within the village, Heibon'na would take the most direct route she could take to meet up with the group. The full group included Nemui and Izu who she had met already and another individual known as Heifu. A new face for the generic shinobi of the Hidden Mist to meet. There were always new faces and new things to learn from others and she was excited to see how the development of the series of events will provide for the group. Knowing a bit of Izu's skillset and some of Nemui's as well, Heibon'na felt the three of them rounded off fairly well so the inclusion of a fourth member should add to the total capacity of the squad to undertake the 6 missions on the list of things to do. Surely the group of four would have a good amount of chemistry considering it seemed Izu had a high degree of capacity to try to be friendly from what Heibon'na could tell and how could someone be rough to Nemui too? This ended up just leaning on this Heifu individual to being a balanced individual and then the group would be fantastic.
Arriving before Nemui, it appeared to Heibon'na had been the third to arrive with the first two being Izu and Heifu. Seeing that they did not have a good rapport, the smile that had been on Heibon'na's face as she approached slinked a bit but she did not let it deter her desire for a successful day of missions. It was at the tail end of this argument of sorts that Nemui came into vision as Heibon'na spotted them waving and smiled again more brightly returning the greeting. "Nice to see you again Nemui!" She proclaimed hoping to get the two's attention away from each other and towards her and Nemui. It was likely the best avenue of approach for the group at this time with consideration of the fact that there was a multitude of concerns that would grow if they could not cooperate towards a better result.
Once the group settled and was ready to go for the first task, it was the bathhouse that was a priority and a concern as a bomb issue was definitely a danger to not just the place of business but to villagers in the surrounding area due to the uncertainty of how many explosive tags were actually present. Once they made it to the destination, the severity was rather evident with there being individuals set up outside to blockage the street. It was going to be a degree of stealth required to avoid raising more suspicion for the crowd that had softly gathered but knowing the general capacity of the squad before her, there likely would not be any further issues present for the group to get in. A heavy fog had rolled in that day giving a slight edge to the Kirigakuran shinobi. With the stage being set and the shinobi on duty, it was a simple task to enter the bathhouse to see the plethora of explosive tags present. Not attuned to sensing chakra yet, this was going to be an interesting situation for Heibon'na to be of help.
Leaning onto the others for help and support, Heibon'na would offer to use a few of her techniques to help keep hidden through a more distinct mist to avoid prying eyes for their effort or otherwise. Beyond that, she would indicate that she could produce solid clones to also provide the group with more bodies to handle the high volume of tags that were present within the bathhouse. The interesting thing for Heibon'na was that there was evidence that she could not really process yet. It became clear that she was the most inexperienced of the group in this setting and situation and a light sigh as they resolved the truly dangerous situation that was bombed at the bathhouse. The wires were the trickier part that Heibon'na had almost walked into herself due to the obscuration vision that was present but one of the other two had stopped her before she had tripped one of the series of preset explosive tags.
Being rather out of place with taking care of the tags, Heibon'na had trailed behind Nemui and saw that he had begun the conversation portion dealing with the business owner. Heibon'na stood off to the side listening intently and coming to her own conclusions about the man. It was not a wild thing to consider for the village to have individuals who cared not for the procedure of the shinobi as much as they cared about business. There was a reason Kirigakure no Sato was a major village within the world's landscape and it took men like this to keep the village moving, even if a bathhouse was not inherently the means of business that put the village on the map. With the main portion of the issues present taken care of, Heibon'na followed Nemui toward the next location attempting to keep her own practice for the skills the village excelled at in her mind.
The initial interaction of Nemui at the door caught Heibon'na's attention as she kept some distance from Nemui, as he seemed to have a poor rapport with the establishment before kicking the door in metaphorically and giving it a shoulder check literally. The ruckus of tools and other makeshift weapons could be heard from outside. A few others had been lurking about nearby as Heibon'na sprung into action unleashing the first gate to boost her speed to swiftly unleash kicks toward the handful of bandits on the outside knocking them to the floor relatively quickly. Seeing Nemui take care of the assortment within, Heibon'na stepped into the doorframe before giving a thumbs up. Seeing that the owner was skittish already, Heibon'na took it upon herself to approach the man to see if any information could be gathered.
Seeing him cowering in a corner, the rather generic-looking individual had a smile on her face, her bangs covering her eyes as she approached the owner, his eyes showing a degree of fear already. As she got closer, she squatted before him getting on eye level. With him facing outward and her facing him, her back would be toward the rest of the group beyond Nemui who had gone to get the stationed shinobi within the village to begin restricting the area. She moved her hand to lift up her bangs before whispering to the only consciously aware individual present nearby, "No one will believe you if I told you what I would do to you. Let your imagination take it upon itself to imagine what someone like me would do if it was allowable within the realm of the village." Her eyes focused on the man's eyes, as her kind expression contorted into a face mixed with disgust, anguish, and darkened as if calling upon the darkness within the world to show the man that his chance to come clean would be now or never. A light pungent smell wafted into the room as he soiled himself before passing out from fear. Satisfied with the result, Heibon'na let her bangs fall back over her eyes and returned to her normal chipper attitude. With how quietly she had spoken, it would require someone to be over her shoulder to have heard all the words coherently.
With the group taking care of the latest task to be completed for the day, there still was more to do and accomplish as they had to regroup for the next task. It was now time for a shopping spree with some guidance as she felt the sun attempt to pierce the veil of the mist-covered village. The average-looking teenager was happy with the result so far as she was stepping up in a variety of ways. It was a good proceeding so far and that was more than welcoming with consideration of the severity of the missions being in question. From the lesser C-Rank missions in the batch to the A-Rank mission to handle, Heibon'na was excited to be contributing to the village and to her family back home with the payout that the assortment of missions would provide. It was at that thought they had arrived at the next destination, a lavish home with a butler greeting them. Quickly feeling out of place, the averagely talkative teen was rather silent upon entry. The building itself was a foreign space for her and it was clear she was not the most comfortable.
With the entry of the building and guidance of the butler, it was time for the next mission to begin. Heibon'na listened intently as the couple came down and introduced themselves as Shigeru and Hana. Nemui was the first to introduce themselves as Heibon'na mirrored the bow, "My name is Ogawa, Heibon'na. Ogawa as in Small River." She elaborated while omitting her normal greeting of a 'cousin'. She was uncertain and unsure but waited for the others to introduce themselves to the well-off couple of merchants. With the group having similar but variant abilities, Heibon'na took on the left flank of the group being vigilant as she used this opportunity to train and hone her sensory skills. It was a long development to begin but over time she could start to sense some chakra. Presuming no one was suppressing she slowly could begin to pick up the squad's chakra when she focused heavily on that.
As they approached the first store as the sun began its descent, the jewelry still sparkled in through the fog with what rays of light reached them in their display. It was a decadence of wealth being shown towards the others. With Nemui taking the forward lead, Heibon'na remained outside the front door with a smile, keeping track and using this as an extended training session. Keeping watch outside of the storefront while inside, Heibon'na thought back to the conversation that Shigeru had with Nemui as they were approaching. The oddness of the status of the merchant being a point of contention seemed to be a running trend for the day. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred to the generic shinobi's watch outside of the first shop as she scanned as best as she could with the fog that was encroaching on the village that day. Once the business was done inside, Nemui returned and debriefed the group on the information that was provided by Shigeru.
To the young kunoichi, it appeared that Nemui felt like something was off or was focusing hard on the day's affairs so far. Thinking to themselves for a moment, Heibon'na chimed in at Nemui, "It seems like there is a lot on your mind. I hope that our success so far isn't bittersweet to the progress we've made so far. The tasks presented today were definitely a large volume but I think I can speak for the rest of us that you've done a fantastic job so far taking charge and leading forward." She said before looking between Izu and Heifu for some support towards the young genin's actions. Hopefully, the other two would catch her drift before giving a pat on the back to Nemui should that be permitted by the young boy. They both had a similar upbringing but it was obvious that there was a split in their experiences at this point that separated the two from a familiarity standpoint. The big shift in the day was the sun breaking through the fog cloud as it began to separate, allowing a degree of visibility that she had not had for the day which came with a deep breath of relief and reprieve from the heaviness that had been taken care of so far.
Now that they made it to the specific point of interest, it was a paranoid merchant's ramblings but there was merit in consideration of the assortment of business owners that were being threatened and concerned that they helped with today. There may have been little merit originally but that was definitely a different situation at this point. With Heibon'na not being the stealthiest inherently, she just assumed her academy student guise and wandered around the shopping district, blending more into the background of the scene than trying to hide in it. Being closer about 15 meters away instead of the length of distance the others took, the generic-looking girl window-shopped while paying attention to the surroundings that were present. With the building and business of interest being a bakery, she was very tempted to go towards it and make a purchase as she was starting to get hungry. With that being a point of issue, Heibon'na succumbed to her stomach as she entered the establishment.
From within the storefront itself, Heibon'na remained vigilant as she assessed the baked goods available. It was there that she noticed a few customers were in a rather mentally dismissed. She kept an eye specifically on them but no disturbances occurred. They simply walked in, made their order, and went about their business. Not a lot of small talk and none in that state stayed behind to eat their goods had been in that temperament. With a few baked goods purchased, she walked out with a bag that she would reluctantly wait to consume till they regrouped. It was a long time before anything occurred as the stakeout to see if any monumental events were relatively quiet. It was likely going to be on others in the group to handle and move the group forward toward information that would become relevant for them.
Regrouping once more, Heibon'na gave off the information she spotted while investigating. The concerns being presented forth and the general observation she had taken while 'window shopping' was given to the group to think about and rest on as Nemui proposed to retire for the day and undergo the missions remaining on the next day. With the affairs taking as long into the evening hours as they did, it was clear to Heibon'na that the direction and growth of the group would probably benefit if they took a reprieve to better coordinate in the morning. Heavy in thought, Heibon'na gave a nod in understanding to the lack of information that Nemui was able to determine as the only reason she found anything was she got hungry which reminded her she had baked goods to share with the rest of the group. Offering them to the group to whoever was interested in a bite to eat as she would take the remaining back with her back to her apartment to eat for breakfast. She listened intently to other potential insights from the others before considering the approach for the remaining missions.
Returning home with whatever baked goods remained at the end of their last regroup, they had taken care of a majority of the missions but there were still two that needed to be taken care of. There was some disinformation and some rogue defectors who were causing problems. With the proceedings of the day aligned towards merchant shambling and multiple businesses being targeted, it appeared to Heibon'na that the group looking to stir trouble was heavily looking towards spreading a degree of incompetency in a disinformation campaign against the village. It likely was a mixed bag of results from the defectors too. "Perhaps it is all just wholly connected! It makes perfect sense.... but that's too much of an excuse for it all. That would be convenient, too convenient in fact." She added, speaking to herself as she sighed closing the curtains of her own apartment before getting prepared for bed thinking about her family back home, facing their general direction before covering her face and rubbing her eyes before stretching and going to bed. Sleep found its way without much woe or problems for the young kunoichi of Kirigakure no Sato.
Waking up that morning at the crack of dawn and beginning to stretch, Heibon'na slept only a tad bit later in the morning than she normally did which she shook her head about. Something seemed off to her as she went through her routine that she did every morning before there was a knock on her door. Slowly, her attention went towards the door as no one knocked at her door. They had made it to Kirigakure no Sato without really anyone in the village to talk to or discuss her living arrangement yet and kept it relatively under wraps even from the others she had worked with previously. No one from the group from the previous day would have her address unless they followed her but with the consideration of what was to come, she knew that seemed inaccurate of an assessment and as her brain rattled who could be at her door, the knock came again with a degree of some more urgency. Approaching with caution, the normally happy appearance was replaced with a grim expression of disdain and dissatisfaction as she opened the door to a man in monk attire with a package in his hand being pushed toward the young teen.
"This is for you, inside you'll find information pertaining to some troubling individuals that need to be investigated and dealt with, at least, everything that's currently known about them." He said with a degree of mystery and seemed like a dialogue option out of a choose-your-own-adventure novel she had read in some of her spare time. The tonality of the voice being presented also made her think of the individuals who were doing tasks for one reason or another. Refusing to speak or respond to see the response that would prompt her subsequently, her stare locked eyes with a man who seemed distant and unaware of the situation that was being presented before him. Once Heibon'na accepted the package, the man spoke once more as the provided action was the awaited prompt for him to do the next step in the directives given to him, "You'll be joining three of your peers, my colleagues are also making deliveries as we speak." He continued before walking away from the apartment.
Before moving from the spot, Heibon'na closed the door behind her and carried the box following the monk. The steps of the man continued for a while before she simply let him go as it appeared that they were just the messenger and were not going to regroup or coordinate again from what she could tell from the idle movements and rather a non-direct pathway being presented before her. Returning to her home, she looked at the box in her hands, her expression had softened before she gave a light sigh against the box as she closed her eyes towards the entrance of the complex in which she resided. A concussive force echoed into her eardrums as she adjusted herself disorientated and trying to sort out what properly had occurred. The position she found herself in was not due to her own interest in the box though she realized quickly the archway that had attracted her to seek residence had been blown up, likely a byproduct of the special delivery she received just now. There were footsteps of a different kind of man approaching with the sounds of chains being dragged, it was clear to Heibon'na that she had become a target. She cursed as she sat herself up to the best of her ability before a swift kick landed on her side, she coughed up blood onto the pavement before her, launching into the side of another building that had some scorch marks from the blast that had occurred.
She was hurt and injured now and being targeted, none of which were good things to be accounted for in any situation. The generic shinobi sat herself up as the chains clanged once more as the man before her sported garb of the group she began to suspect that was the root of the squad's challenges the previous day. She had deviated and it was obvious that she was becoming a nuisance in the faction's intended plans within the village of Kirigakure no Sato. The disparity she had with this was posing a challenge as the man stood before her. Sitting up with her back against the wall she chuckled lightly before laughing almost disassociating to the scenario being made out of a young teen's action plot for a novel. Whereas in that story the teenage hero would stand up, cough up more blood, and begin a fight, Heibon'na simply sat there laughing. The man froze unsure of what was going through the kunoichi's head before reeling his arm back the chain dragging against the floor and being pulled to be launched as an attack. His focus was unapologetically on the harmed and injured genin of the village that had scorned him as her hands picked up from the sides of her body forming seals. Alert and in danger, a field of flowers came forth before him as she had frozen him in place with a genjutsu right before the chain had reached the point of launch to be used as a weapon against her.
She sat there laughing, stuck in place herself as she stared at the man. They both remained there for a while as Heibon'na maintained and kept the man trapped before her in such a public point that was garnering attention. "You failed. You have gone to the ends of the islands to fight back and you have failed." She began with a low tone, her eyes trained on his irises, piercing with malicious intent as she had positioned herself to be able to view and look into his eyes. "You have chosen the wrong squad to fight. You have chosen the wrong people to target. You. Choose. Wrong!" She shouted finally as she used her genjutsu to rest and recuperate temporarily from the initial blast. The laughing she did was a way to test out her own body limitations in a very directly painful way to buy more time. Every step of the way she had planned out since being kicked into the wall of her favorite parchment shop. Quickly more seals formed as the man regained his faculties now with a chain not in position to begin attacking. The seals she had formed grew in number as she looked towards the man unleashing a small water-looking senbon from her mouth before he began laughing. Confident in his ability he simply roared in the face of the minuscule technique being launched at him. Upon impact, it blew up in his face obscuring his vision enough that the smirk on Heibon'na could not be seen by the attacker.
From there their capacity and diversity of techniques came through within full capacity as they brought forth a gravitational singularity above the treacherous traitor to the village pinning him down towards the ground. From there they slowly rose up coughing up a bit of blood before walking up to the man and spitting some blood onto his face giving a swift kick to his head. A strong-formed kick, not enough to accidentally snap his neck or anything definitely strong enough to knock the man out cold. She gave it a moment before flopping down and sitting on the ground next to the unconscious body of her attacker. It seemed like the others would have to fend for themselves. Between the group of them and the suddenness of what all transpired, there was not much Heibon'na could have done to avoid the attack realistically. She did not possess any sensory capacities at this time and the skills present for her were not ones that would have gotten any advantage. For what it was worth it was quick thinking and a degree of feigning insanity that caught the would-be assailant off their rhythm. Sighing as she sat there, other shinobi finally came to see what happened and the confrontation quickly ended just as fast as it occurred. She was wounded and hurt but it was nothing to be immediately concerned about thankfully to what she could tell.
Once the adrenaline wore off however was a different story entirely. There were more of these people out and about and Heibon'na was not ready for another confrontation. With other shinobi around she was able to let her body settle which resulted in a confirmation that the guy's kick had broken a few ribs of hers. Unamused by the result, she cursed her inability and knew that out of the group, it was likely Izu who would not have been caught off guard by this. She seemed to be the type to have punched, poked or murdered the man who knocked on her door when it was such a stranger dropping off 'information' randomly. She had been suspicious but had not opened the box to investigate it within the apartment. To her luck, it was just the street and some accessory infrastructure that was hurt. No business or other people were injured since it looked like the booby trap laid out in her box was off due to how she reacted. Rubbing her temple lightly, she stood up with the help of a supporting field medic before being directed to head toward the village's hospital for a proper check-up. Heibon'na grimaced at the thought of having to walk all the way to the center in such a state but such was the life of the shinobi of the village hidden in the mist. The strong survived and the weak were culled, not as they once were but in new challenges that they faced.
Thinking back to the missions set forth it caught Heibon'na's attention that the mixed result of things was going to tie back together somehow. It was then she requested, mainly to avoid having to climb stairs, that one of the shinobi enter her apartment to get the baked goods that she had purchased. She was not a medically inclined shinobi and hopefully, the baked goods were not involved in the whole mess of the last twenty-four hours. "I hope if the others had any they were simple baked goods but I think these need to be assessed by a professional." She said softly before wincing at the pain as she took a breath. She cursed mentally trying to find a good walking pace for her to make her way to the hospital while mentally going over the details she had discovered as the defector that had attacked her was captured with the aid of her. Throughout the time, she felt that she had blended well enough in but there was still more for her to work on should such a challenge come forth once more to handle and deal with. She was about to shake her head before stopping herself.
Upon arrival at the hospital, the staff members moved to get her on a stretcher so they could stop Heibon'na from hurting herself any further. Motioning for pen and paper, Heibon'na began to outline the details that had been going through the last day and the current morning. Report work was always a priority while the information was fresh as she equally handed off the baked goods to a hospital attendant for them to be tested to make sure the bakery was not somehow involved in the whole mess too. It seemed all too convenient for things to end like this when it was clear there was an overarching connection between the defectors and the disinformation that came from the safety of businesses. With the attending staff members taking her notes to submit she found herself in a room by herself in the meantime while staff sorted through some admission paperwork and other documentation for the genin. She had been through a very long day the day before and welcomed the peace and quiet of the hospital room she was put in.
With some medicine reaching through her veins finally, a weak gasp and breath escaped her as she began to relax a bit more. Testing her speaking capacities she whistled to just pass her mental commentary before saying aloud, "Thankfully, no more merchants for a while. Tired of business practices and all that crap for the week." She said knowing full well she wanted to get herself a new set of uniforms to wear after the events of this morning left her normal attire in tatters. She sighed as she understood that between the bathhouses, the banditry, the shopping, and the reconnaissance the squad did the day prior was hopefully a step in the right direction between four varying perspectives to remedy the disinformation that Kirigakure No Sato had a weak shinobi force and that defectors were going to be a problem. The shinobi of the hidden mist had been successful in saving, protecting, and aiding the denizens once more and this time Heibon'na walked out with a new story to tell her family.

Re: Suspicious People Doing Weird Things

Heifu had a grim aura about her that started with a vague twitch upwards of her lips. This expression had been plastered on her face since she had read the secret letter that had been delivered to her. It seemed the village was finally done with assigning her childlike tasks and was giving her assignments that actually met up with her caliber. Beyond that, she would be working with Nemui again, who she thought of as a grandson. She would also be working with Izu which contrary to other beliefs, excited her. She could finally see the girl on a proper mission. She hoped she would live up to the bar Heifu had placed for her in her mind. Her skills as a kunoichi were top notch but her... respect and tact were perhaps the worst she had ever seen. If the girl had improved on those skills she may actually become the first ninja of this generation she properly approved of. Her favoritism of Nemui notwithstanding of course.
She didn't have to worry about destroying the letter as she readied herself for today's missions. As it was set with a seal to burst into flame upon being read. No stranger to the workings of these kinds of missions she had calmly placed it in her fireplace before it had caught fire and then spread the ashes to ensure no spy could jutsu them into a readable form. Once that was done and she'd had her morning tea she was out the door towards the meetup spot.
As she arrived she noticed that Izu had beaten her there. She gave the kunoichi a firm nod of acknowledgment that likely looked ghoulish due to the strange smile and grim aura she had been portraying all morning. After that, she turned and leaned against a wall and closed her eyes to wait for the remaining two members to arrive. However, to avoid being rude, she said, "If you show those senbon skills off today I think we'll be done with these missions by lunch." She didn't want to leave her comment at a complete compliment though, "Though I hope you'll show some sense on when to use them, yes?"
This was perhaps a poor choice but it was the first test. If this simple comment sent the girl into a berserk rage she would know she couldn't work with the girl. Which would be sad, in spite of Heifu's apprehension Izu had the qualities to become a top notch ninja. Perhaps exceeding even her old self's legendary status. If that meant she had to risk a beating from the girl as she tried to make her a better ninja so be it. Though she did think the girl would have a bit more difficult a time than her last attempt.
While prepared for Izu's response Heifu was grateful for a new girl's arrival breaking the tension. As the only name mentioned in the letter she didn't recognize she took the girl as Heibon'na. The girl was unassuming in almost every way, which made Heifu brighten. She seemed a perfect choice as an assassin and wondered if the girl would follow in her career's footsteps. "I'm Heifu, nice to meet you Heibon'na."
She left it at that, not wanting to be rude but also not caring for many genin until they had proved themselves to her. Plus as she finished her words Nemui rounded the corner. Was it just her or did he seem skinnier than normal? Not wanting to embarrass the boy she lifted herself from the wall and walked up to him at a steady pace. Once she was within arm's length she began to fuss over him softly, "Have you been eating properly? I may need to start bringing you supper to make sure you don't fade away."
As she finished her fussing she froze with her hand outstretched in an attempt to straighten his shirt as she realized there were others watching. She dropped her hand as she cleared her throat loudly and with a loud harrumph turned around and stalked back to the wall while saying loudly, "And I better not catch you slacking again!"
Hoping that she had done enough to save face for both her and the boy she stayed quiet as they made plans and left towards their next destination. She knew she'd have to apologize to him later and she hated how ancy that made her feel. She wasn't used to feeling... motherly. She almost gagged on the word, as if the mere thought of it were vile. But she knew she had no other word for it. She felt some sort of protective urge when it came to Nemui, somehow the blond boy had wormed his way into her rotten heart. She'd long thought she didn't have any room for such emotions, her hands too stained with blood to feel much of anything. This change was unsettling, to say the least, and she still was unsure if it was for better or worse. For her, and Nemui's, sake she hoped it was for the better.
As they arrived at the establishment she turned her mind to the task at hand. She knew there was no choice but to be focused while on mission, not unless she wanted to end up dead. The place was alive with both people and tension. Cordoned off by the police as it was it took only a few moments to hear that several shadowy figures were in the area. With the thick mist billowing in it was hard to make out anyone, and Heifu wasn't sure if the rumours were just based on people seeing each other as they moved about the fog.
They infiltrated the bathhouse without too much difficulty but as it became evident explosive tags had been used she put up her hand, silencing Nemui's own volunteer efforts and offered to go first. Without explaining why she simply turned to smoke and began proceeding forward. In this form, she was unlikely to set off any tripwires. She would advance into a room first and call out clear or point out any trip wires she could see. It was likely a bit eerie for the others to see her head reform out of a body of smoke to speak with them, but it was important for the task at hand so Heifu paid their reactions no mind. With their safety well in hand due to her Iburi heritage they made swift work of finding and disarming the multitude of tags scattered throughout the building.
When they emerged from the building Heifu assumed her physical form. As they went to turn in the tags and report their mission her hand quickly grasped her tanto as a shadowy figure came towards them swiftly from the mist. As they revealed themself to be the bathhouse owner she loosened her grip on her weapon but remained vigilant. Content with letting Nemui handle the conversation she stayed alert for trouble, the man's sudden appearance was suspicious, to say the least. But as the conversation progressed nothing much happened aside from a gradual glow of pride growing inside of her. Nemui handled the man perfectly and while she could tell he was uncomfortable with making his threats he had still done what was necessary for the village and the mission. If he kept this up he would make a fine shinobi.
Once Izu returned from disposing of the tags they would press on to their next destination. Still alert for danger Heifu kept her hand casually on the hilt of her tanto, but nothing had caught her attention. While this fog was useful for their own infiltration needs it left her uncomfortable thinking of how it could be used against them. As they arrived at the store the mist continued to roil and billow around them as Nemui spoke with the store owner. Noticing something was off Heifu gave Nemui a nod as he broke down the door, as she ran in behind him and Heibon'na she gave Izu a tight smile and said, "I think it's time for you to use those senbon dear."
Unsure of whether her comment would be received well she bolted forward anyway. Seeing Heibon'na take care of the door she rushed into the melee and joined Nemui. However, she didn't draw her blade. Instead, she simply turned to smoke as needed as she fought the bandits. They quickly grew clumsier as they became frustrated with their efforts at injuring her, making them easy pickings for Izu's senbon or Nemui's taijutsu skills. But as the fighting came to a close one man saw through her strategy and bowled past her in an effort to attack the blonde kunoichi. While Heifu knew she could take care of herself, she could take no chances and drew her tanto and stabbed the man carefully in the back. If she had aimed correctly it would miss any vital organs but cause enough pain to stop any further attempts at resistance.
She wiped her tanto on the man's leg and sheathed it before looking around at the aftermath. She stayed on guard as the others bound their former assailants which left her in the perfect position to watch Heibon'na speak with the store owner. While she wasn't close enough to hear what the girl said she did recognize the sharp stink of ammonia as it filled the air alongside the look of fright on the man's face as he hit the ground and passed out. If the girl looked at her she would give her an approving nod before helping the others report the incident to a nearby guardhouse. She would have to watch that one carefully. If the girl kept this up she would quickly become another Heifu respected of the younger generation. Already she could visualize the girl's future talent in the killing arts. She was an assassin in the making if there ever was one.
As they arrived at a large estate to begin their next mission Heifu hung back as she knew her talents weren't with people. She maintained this as a butler ushered them in and the couple arrived and introduced themselves. When it came time she merely said, "I'm Heifu Jōnetsu." If they had expected more of a response from her they'd be disabused of that notion quickly as silence filled the room. Diplomacy was one thing but there was no reason for her to make nice with these two, her job was to guard them plain and simple. Niceties could distract her and get them killed. That mere thought brought the face of an old comrade to her mind, his smiling face stained with blood as she buried him. He didn't even realize an attack was happening until it was too late. The memory made her scowl. He was another shinobi who had died too young. He was, perhaps, the first to make her begin to question the teachings of Kirigakure's young shinobi. The first to set her on this path.
Once they got outside she turned to smoke wordlessly to scout their surroundings, blending in with the fog. She didn't want to be stuck making small talk. The memory was too fresh in her mind for words anyways. Surprisingly they ran into no trouble. She began to doubt the couple's claim of danger when Nemui emerged hurriedly from their most recent stop. She returned to human form and listened to his suspicions. They made her nervous. As they made their way to turn the couple over to the nearest guard she mulled over the couple's strange behavior and realized this was a lot bigger than they had expected. Mind control was no easy thing and doing it over such a vast amount of people and with this much detail/control was a work of a genius. She'd seen its like a few times in her career, pre-retirement and never to this scale.
She continued to think about this as they split up to scout the area for anything suspicious. She evaporated into smoke and took to the skies, observing the area and passersby as the fog finally began to disperse by the sun. She continued this for hours, paying close attention for any hints of subterfuge or brainwashing. However, she turned up nothing. Dejected she returned to the group and gratefully accepted Nemui's suggestion to return home and sleep.
Still filled with nervous energy, sure that this must be the work of a skilled and large organization she used every trick in her counter-intelligence arsenal. She constantly looked for observers and doubled back many a time before finally coming home. Her efforts had taken so long that it was well into the evening by the time she had arrived. The cold nipped at her arms as she opened the door to her house, the sun long gone and its rays no longer warming the village. Restless she prepared for bed but not before she set a few traps in case of intruders. Finally unable to put off rest any longer she pushed herself into bed and a fitful sleep.
She awakened at dawn. The first light hit her face and caused her to spring from bed. She quickly went downstairs and checked the various traps she laid but found none had been disturbed. Feeling slightly foolish she started her morning routine. Better safe than sorry... She thought to herself.
As her kettle whistled indicating her morning tea was ready she heard a knock at the door. Suspicion filled her and she flipped her hands through a quick hand seal and transformed herself into her most common guise. She approached the door and slid a hand behind her back and to her tanto, half drawing it. But as she opened the door she was all sweetness.
"How can I help you dear?" She asked the man before her. He was dressed as a Buddhist monk and held a small box in his hand.
"This is for you, inside you'll find information pertaining to some troubling individuals that need to be investigated and dealt with, at least, everything that's currently known about them. You'll be joining three of your peers, my colleagues are also making deliveries as we speak." He replied as handed her the box. He clearly wasn't here for pleasantries but he looked at her confused, as if expecting someone else.
"Thank you dearie, why don't you help yourself to a sweet by my mailbox? A sweetie deserves a sweet after all!"
The man shook his head as he turned to leave before giving her one more confused glance over his shoulder. As he stepped away she quickly but carefully set the box on the ground as she drew her tanto and then stabbed him carefully in the back. As he convulsed in pain she pulled him inside and closed the door. She let him drop to the floor as she withdrew her weapon and then stabbed him twice more for good measure. As she began speaking she released her transformation, "Do I look more like who you were told to find?"
The man moaned in pain in response, gesturing at his injuries. "Oh, don't worry. I didn't hit anything vital. If you tell me what I want to know we can get you help before you bleed out. Perhaps you could tell me first what's inside this box?"
As the words came out of her mouth she knew she had made a mistake. Once his attention focused on the box the monk lunged for it with his right hand. Prepared and quick herself Heifu swiftly swung her blade and cut off the fingers reaching towards the box. As he let out a howl of agony she carefully picked up the box and put it in on a table in the next room. She sighed loudly as she made her way back to him, "Now we're going to have to do this a lot faster if you don't want to die. Tell me what's in the-"
She launched towards the monk as he came in sight, his foaming mouth and glassy eyes already telling her he had consumed some sort of poison. She opened his mouth in hopes of not being too late but all it took was one look at him to see he wasn't staring at the earthly realm any longer, he was gone. She shoved at the monk angrily, rage filling her. She'd been so close to getting some solid information before it had all turned to naught. She stood up slowly, the anger still finishing its course throughout her blood but as it settled she jumped into action, running into the street and towards Nemui's house. She had experienced a lifetime of missions and knew there was no way one would be delivered in that matter. But a less experienced ninja? She shivered as she thought of what may have happened to her teammates. The only address she knew was Nemui's but if she was being honest with herself she would have run in that direction anyway. The mere thought of him getting hurt sent her spiraling.
As she ran, pushing herself further and further as her lungs burned, she stopped long enough to get two ninja up to speed and send them after her other two teammates. Her duty there done she kept running, praying she got there in time. As she rounded the corner to his block her heart dropped inside of her chest. She could see the wreckage of an explosion from here as well as a mass of people congregated further up the street. Dread filled her as she ran forward but it was nothing compared to the feeling she got as she realized it was his apartment that was caught in the blast. Desperation fueled her and she began shoving people out of the way mercilessly while yelling, "Nemui! I need to see if he's alright! Nemui! Has anyone seen a blond boy? NEMUI!"
Lost in her fear she didn't realize she'd been stopped until a police officer shook her hard enough to rattle the teeth in her skull. "He's fine, witnesses state they saw a blond boy heading towards the hospital. But ma'am you need to calm down! Ma'am-"
She froze at his words, relief filled her with such strength the world faded, nearby noise a faint buzz in her ear. He was safe. The level of emotion she had terrified her. She had no children of her own and so had nothing to equate it to. But her best guess is this would be something a parent would feel. She didn't like the feeling. Assassins had to stamp this emotion from their heart as a matter of early training. But she was stuck with it now and she'd be damned if the boy died on her watch. Damned if he died at all. So with a quick word of thanks at the bewildered police officer, she took off again towards the hospital and hoped everyone was safe.

Re: Suspicious People Doing Weird Things
Sat Feb 24, 2024 7:49 pm
As Izu woke up in her new room still filled with boxes in Shiro's house, she carefully stretched, being quite sore from her previous day of intensive training at the Training facility. Indeed, after her less than glorious victory against Nemui in the practice fight they did, Izu felt she needed to sharpen her skills even more, as sharp as her senbons were, to be able to fight about anyone, anywhere any time. But today wasn't a day of practices, spars and training. No, today, it was mission time! As usual with the way Kirigakure No Sato worked in their unique and secret ways, Izu received a scroll with the seal of the 4 waves of the hidden mist in the early hours of the morning, describing the task at hand for the day, and the team she was paired with. In classic Izu fashion, she got up of her bed in pajamas, eager to read it as soon as possible, getting as early as before the sun, the sky starting to pale a bit but still no rays to be seen. Of course, this day, as many in the islands, was covered with a thick mist and fog, making it almost impossible to normal eyes to discern the time of the day. not wanting to care with that at first, and too busy reading the scroll of missions, Izu installed herself in her room, beside the foggy window, sitting on the corner of her bed, and read the missive.
Her face of excitement grew even bigger as she saw the types of missions, serious ones where she could display her real abilities. But then soon after, reading further down the page, her smile changed into a frown, seeing the name of her collegues for this. Nemui and Heibon'na were fine, she liked them even. But the third one... Was none other than the old crazy coot of Kirigakure, Heifu Iburi. In any ways, the missions needed to be done, and Izu would clearly need to work on her profesionnalism. She maybe didnt like Heifu, but she was a kirigakure kunoichi, and Heifu too. Tho as the senior officier with Nemui, she would hope Heifu wouldnt dispute her orders or directives, nor nemui's. But this was to see afterwards. As the blonde hyuuga got ready to set off, she dressed herself up in her regular under attire: A pair of black standard ample shinobi pants, adorned with sandals for the lower body, usual to her outfit of everyday. The piece de résistance, was her upperwear. Izu wore a small bralette made out of ninja bandages, covering it with a whole long sleeved shirt of fishnets, something quite popular and common amongst the commonfolks made ninja, a kind of street wear that is part of the shinobi fashion since generations. On top of it, she wore a combinaison of mechanisms tied to her arms with reels of wires of multiples sorts, making her arms appear almost entirely mechanical. For her hands, she wore fingerless version gloves with large iron bracer-like cylinder on each hand, which each hid 2m long serated chains. On her chest, she also wore a sort of holster to keep it all tied to her body and arms. Over this, she hid all of it with her iconic oversized seventh swordsman of the mist jacket, hidding in the large sleeves all of her armory, making her appear as the usual small framed girl with a oversized vest, without revealing her secret weapons.
As she walked troughout the city toward the meeting spot, Izu was calm and calculated, not impressed nor expressive, even if she was eager for some actions. Her demeanor was that of someone half bored and half discreet, her hands inside her pockets at almost all times, and her face with lazy eyes and no smile. Arriving there in no time, Izu realized she was the first to be there, and simply sat on the concrete decor waiting patiently for the others. True to herself and habits of waiting, she took out a single senbons out of her ninja pouch and began throwing it toward the concrete wall, making it bounce off back to the floor, then the wall, then back into her hand, cycling it like she was throwing a small ball, defying physics with her needle skills. As a divine punishment, Heifu was the first to arrive, cursing the blonde hyuuga young woman with her presence. At first in all awkwardness, Heifu only presented herself with a nod, which izu replied by mirroring the gesture, but after that, the old lady commented on Izu. To her suprise, the comment was actually a compliment, saying that if she used her needle handling skills, they would be done in no time with the missions, but she added that she would need to know when to use them, poking fun at their last meeting that was less than civil at the training grounds. Giving a half smirk, Izu looked toward Heifu and commented too.
''Don't worry old smoke, you're not in my sights today. We're on the same side you and I.'' Said calmly Izu, keeping her cool while she could hear the others arrive. Heibon'na was the third to arrive, first happily and then seeing the tension and reading the room, less smiling. The rumors about the altercation between Izu and Heifu must've crossed the whole village at this point... This wasnt ideal. The hyuuga girl would have to rectify her reputation. Shortly after, Nemui too arrived, amd without waiting more, they set all their ways toward the bathouse, their first mission.
After a long walk inside the intricate and zigzaging alleys of Kirigakure, the group managed to arrive at the bathouse. Nemui seemed to take the lead of the group, which for once Izu appreciated, as it was usually her job. But on this day she could lay low and act when needed for her expertise. Immediately arriving on the premises, Izu activated her byakugans, seeing trough all and at all angles, able to find if someone was still in the vicinity. As they made their way into the bathouse, Izu could immediately see that it was filled with hundreds of explosive tags, most of them tied around the place in hidden locations, under towels, pots of perfumes, etc. Some were tied to steel tripwires, set to detonate the whole place and to cause a chain reaction of explosions, leveling entirely the bathouse.
''Careful. Explosives.'' Noted Izu, signaling to the group before anyone else saw it that it was filled to the brim. With the help of the others and her byakugan seeing all the explosives tags spread all around the place, Izu defused the tags one by one, directing her collegues with her chakra true vision to where the tags and wires were, and disarming a few herself too. Of course, after being done, the group destroyed in a non explosive way the tags, rendering them innert and keeping the paper remains to show as proof of the crime. Soon after their exit of the now disarmed building, the populace had gathered around in a large crowd of currious individuals, which soon included the very owner of the place, a presumptuous and pompous man, frustrated to have been closed this long, and convinced of the ill intent of his rival, as well as critiquing the ninja of the hidden mist. Unphased by his speech, as she couldnt care more of the raving and baubbling of a fustrated cucked bathouse owner, Izu could stand to see the honor of the ninja of Kirigakure spoiled as he said they didnt act fast enough to his liking. As the rest of the group investigated and talked to the guard, and Nemui talked to the man saying it was nothing and was now safe, the blonde girl waited for the talk to be over to discreetly present herself toward the bathouse owner, while the others were heading toward the rival place.
Sneaking toward him in the middle of the crowd, Izu got out a single senbon from her pouch, and sneakily handed it at waist height, before accosting in close quarter the man speaking ill. As she pressed the senbon gently onto his inner tigh, creating a sharp sensation on his skin, she whispered in his ear.
''Next time you discredit the ninjas of the mist will be the last time your eyes are open. This needle is on your femoral artery. It bleed out even faster than slicing your throat. I hope the message is clear.'' said the girl gently, before removing the needle and going away, disapearing into the crowd to follow the others to the rival establishment. Not long afterwards, they arrived at the place, which seem deserted. Nemui knocked at the door, only to be answered with hostility and reject, the man inside being reluctant and saying the place was closed for the day.
Immediately, Izu instinct flared up. Her still active byakugans could see a ton of people inside, so it didnt appear closed at all. The figures were not in stances that seemed to be bathing or enjoying a steamy environment either, but more like they were hidding, or creating an ambush. Izu leaned toward Nemui, whispering in his ear to press forward, decided to find out the truth behind those doors and walls.
''Break the door.'' Said Izu gently to the boy. Immediately, the blonde team leader charged trough, destroying the not so solid door, even if it appeared quite sturdy. Inside was a man afraid and still non cooperative, hidding behind a statue and seemingly terrified. His fear soon explained itself, as the floor was covered in blood marks, and the group of fake guests that Izu saw made their way toward the entrance. Instead of some people in towels without clothes relaxing, the quatuor was met with a large group of bandits, armed to the teeths with various crude weapons and tools, ready to dish out a beating. Immediately, the group readied themselves to attack.
The fight that enssued was brutal, but without too much blood, as Nemui started to attack in a non-lethal way, signaling to the rest of the group that they needed to keep them alive to send them into custody and to pay for their acts, giving the victims a bit of closure. At the same tame as Nemui did, Izu started to fight, throwing handfull of senbons toward the bandits, aiming with surgical precision to their tenketsu points, disabling legs and arms left and right, as well as disabling some directly to fall unconscious, attacking their cerebral cortex to make them fall unconscious, or even their brainstem directly to cut any nerves connection to their body, rendering them totaly innert without causing any damage of injury to them. After a while of fighting, and most bandits looking like porcupines filled with needles, the group was taken care of, and was defeated. Heifu did resort to stabbing one in the back, which Izu nodded in disaproval.
''Huh. I tought you were skilled enough to not make victims like we all did.'' Said the blonde toward Heifu, clearly only wanting to trigger a reaction from the old lady who was supposed to be more experience and have more judgment than all of them. As they started to get back to consciousness, most of them were being tied up by the group, with Izu taking back her needles from the bandits bodies, waking them up slowly and steadily. But as each interogated the bandits, Izu wanted to interogate the bathouse owner. She took him by the loose cloth of his shirt, and dragged him to a corner of the room, where the two could be alone. As she made him sit down, Izu dropped her hand on his forehead, grabbing his whole head in a strong maner, not confortable and as a mean of intimidation.
''Confess your crimes. If you cooperate, I will not harm you.'' Said Izu, trying to squeeze the truth out of the man. As he shook his head in a negative maner, Izu's hand started to glow in a blue flame pattern, and the man began to scream in pain. The medical shinobi was actually draining his chakra, his very life essence from him, an awfully painfull process. As he screamed and cried, the girl continued to get confessions out of him. After a short while, she restorted to using yet another hand contact technique, the mind read jutsu. Entering his mind, she saw exactly what had happened: The man had hired the bandits to rig and trap the bathouse with explosives, but when it was time to pay them, just mere minutes before they would make their entry, he refused to provide the ryo. The bandits were furious and started to beat him, killing his assistant, hence all the blood. They were trying to intimidate him to caugh up the funds, when they entered, ravaging the bandits. The rest is history, as they say. Immediately aware of it all, Izu went into her satchel and retrieved a bit of rope, and threw it a the feet of the man.
''Tie yourself up with it. I know what you have done. You have until sunset to surrender yourself to the authorities at the Mizukage office itself and confess your sabotage and hirring of marauders to do it. As soon as day end if you arent at pelican island I will personnaly track you down and hunt you like a rabid dog.'' Said Izu, looking the man dead in the eyes.
As the rest of the group finished up, they all left toward their next mission, escorting a couple of nobles to their shopping. Izu didnt like the upper class, the gentry or the bourgeoisie of Kirigakure. Herself comming from the slums, to protect some rich people while the poor too needed protection made her sick to her stomach. But nonetheless, the mission required so, therefore izu did it without letting it transpire that she despised them. To help with the task, as the group formed a special formation to protect them, Izu took to the roof tops, following the group from affar, scaning the surrounding area with her hyuuga eyes, as well as watching the roofs for potential ambushes. Nothing out of the ordinary was to signal as they entered the first store, Izu watching from the other side of the street from the roof of a restaurant, her feet dangling over the edge, her stance relaxed, yet attentive to every minute details. After another store, and another after that, Nemui seemed to take more and more his time with the noble couple, and it seemed there was something off. Immediately getting out of the store, the couple looked out of it, as if they werent trully conscious, their movement sometimes robotic or strange in nature. Nemui signaled the rest of the group, and to izu on the roof too, to follow them, as they were going off track of the planned itinerary of shopping toward the closest guard house. As the small team leader surrendered the nobles to the authorities to have them be safe, Izu was confused to say the least, unsure what was happening as she saw from afar only. Nonetheless, the group made their way to the rest of the missions, their day too packed to stop for a simple anomaly.
Izu herself not carring more about nobles of the hidden mist didnt question it, not unhappy to leave them to their fate. The last mission of the day was to observe a business for illicit and illegal activities, as it was suspected to be under criminal ownership, or at least tied to the criminal underbelly of the village and the surrounding islands. Izu had heard of multiples defectors and missing ninjas who were in the area, but didnt yet encountered one. Eager for this mission, the hype of the blonde hyuuga dropped when she saw that the store was a bakery. What kind of criminal would be intimidating when making whole grain wheat breads and baked goods? This was ridiculous. Either way, Izu was going to mix the practical with the pleasurable, and she weaved a couple of handseals, changing her whole appearance to a civilian, seemless into the crowd, and headed toward the bakery. As she entered, the smell of buttery and flaky crusts assaulted her senses, as well as suggary pies, sweets and pastries. Not really restraining herself, while the others looked and watched the store from affar, the disguised hyuuga was inspecting it from the inside, both with her eyes and with her taste buds, taking a large chocolate pastry to devour right at the doorstep of the place. After a while, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and the group figured this was a loss of time. Each and every member of the team left as the sun started to fade, with the fog finnaly fading too. Still with her uncaring demeanor, Izu got out her hands out of her pockets to wave goodbye to her team mates.
''Good shit today on the missions. Heifu, you aint as bad as I remembered, ahah. Take care now.'' Said the hyuga girl, before going away, walking slowly toward her house in the middle class district, living with her brother and sensei. The walk at this hour of the day was calm, as most people went to bed by this hour. Izu was also exhausted of her day, and her idea was to do the same too. Arriving at home, she dished out her gear as soon as she entered her room and closed the door, with her clothes flying off as soon as she hit the bed too, crashing on her matress and keeping only her bra and pants as a lazy substitution for pajamas. It didnt take long for the blonde young woman to fall asleep, and she enjoyed it while it lasted. After a few hours, in the dead of the night, Izu sense flared as she woke up startled by a sound. There was, at this late hour, someone knocking on the door of the house. Putting on a oversized sweater in case it was someone other than who she tought, Izu also grabbed a couple of senbons, just in case. At the door was the most strange character of all: A man, dressed as a monk or wiseman, seemingly carrying a small wooden box. Weirdly enough, with her byakugan, she saw nothing out of the ordinary. The man was alone, and the box seemingly empty? This was strange. She would have to resort to her instinct. As she oppened the door, the man greeted her, and gave her the box, saying these were instructions for the following missions tied to the missions they just performed. Strange to say the least. Usually, the shinobi who delivered letters like that were not seen, nor did they communicate orders vocaly. Too sleepy to notice the multiples off points of this facade, izu took the box and closed the door. The man started to walk away, as a real courrier would do, but as soon as Izu oppened the box, the front part of the entrance of the house immediately was leveled, destroyed in a large ball of flame and explosive burst. The monk in the street turned around in suprise, not anticipating Izu to open the box this close to him, as usually people waited a bit before oppening it. Izu's body was resting on the ground, severely burned and twisted, her bones broken, and part of her flesh cooked and singed trough totally, showing great and fatal injuries. With a smile on his face as he succeeded, the monk slowly approached, now unnable to see as the thick dark smoke rised from the place burning up.
Without him noticing, Izu wasnt defeated. She had activated her ultimate medical jutsu, capable of healing herself of any injuries, regenerating a rates so fast it made her almost immortal temporarily. As marks developped over her burnt skin, the hyuuga girl got up, and summoned her needle sword out of her dimmension, her clothes burned and charred, her face scratched and her skin covered in dark marks of soot and ashes. As the terrorist tought he succeeded, his face and expression dropped to the floor, as he could see the unharmed and uninjured silouette of Izu now armed running toward him at incredible speed, dashing out of the smoke in suprise as if she simply absorbed the explosion. In a swift move, with the man being suprised, there wasnt even a fight at all, Izu channeling her chakra into her muscles to move so fast that the man didnt even see her arrive before she could impale him with her 5ft long sword, traversing his chest completely, leaving him gasping for air and bleeding on the floor. Immediately, Izu understood the situation: the missions and the weird events of the day were all tied. It was missing ninjas, and because they succeeded, the criminal themselves decided to take out the group by their own hands. Well this hadnt followed its course. Izu managed quite easily to escape and defeat her opponent, now dying on the floor from his impalement. To make sure he wouldnt be a menace anymore, Izu approached him and finished him quickly, throwing her needle at his skull, ending his misery. But the girl was now stressed. Her duty as a chuunin was to take care of the village, and if she was attacked by an improvised explosive devices, it would mean her other team members of the day would be attacked too! Immediately having this train of tought, Izu heard another explosion, and then another, and then another. The first one seemed to be the closest, and without even doubting a single second, the hyuuga started to dash toward its origin point, sword in hand.
As she arrived, she saw a crowd where Nemui lived, his house in shambles, with Heifu too in panic as if Nemui was her real grandson. As she tried to figure out what happened, Izu didnt even talk to Heifu, instead clicking one plus one, and dashing with body flicker toward the hospital, ready to help with her medical expertise, hopping to arrive fast enough to heal and save Nemui and Heibon'na should they be injured.
