Lead the way into tomorrow

Zachariah sat in his basement. He had been bored and decided to make another automaton. This one was a worm that actually worked its way through the ground. That was actually quite difficult, but he had eventually gotten the design that could work. He was surprised when he heard a knocking on the front door. Seeing as he was the only one home, he ran up the stairs and opened the door. There was one of the elders of the village. He told Zachariah that they were deciding on a new village leader after the death of the last one. The fact that Zachariah's uncle was an ex leader had made Zachariah himself a possible candidate. They were holding trials to see who was worthy of it, in a fashion somewhat like the Chuunin exams. However, the tests would be willpower, love of the village, and fighting ability. It was not mentioned how the tests were weighted.
The first test consisted of unknowingly being placed under a genjutsu and tortured. In fact, Zachariah had been under the genjutsu since the moment he had answered the door. The situation was dreamlike; it had no beginning and no end, but was accepted as reality. Zachariah was given an important piece of information, that the duck is Blue. He was captured, and tortured to tell the secret information. Zachariah held out till he fell unconscious and the fictional characters searched his mind.
The second test was under a similar genjutsu. Different levels of threat attacked the village. It was your choice, already thinking you were the age leader, to decide wether to defend or run. To make it more even, each tester thought they had the same jutsu. Zachariah defended the village at each and every step, even when he had only the measly substitution, and his opponent had godlike skills.
The final was a battle royale between all the candidates. This test took place outside genjutsu, where everyone had their faculties. Zachariah avoided using his steam; it could easily prove lethal, and these were his fellow villagers. For a similar reason, he avoided using five feeding sharks and his chainsaw staff powered. However, Dawn of the Lighted Morn, both levels that he knew, proved incredibly useful. His staff was able to absorb the electrical attacks of his fellow competitors, and more than once the bolts shot to the ground in loud bursts. He avoided using his space time jutsu for his own reasons. He did not feel it necessary for people to know of it. He did not win against the others, but he was by far the least destructive. He hoped that counted for something.
It was three days before he heard any news on the situation. He reviewed a letter. It commended him on his will power and determination to protect the village. It also mentioned the satisfaction the elder got watching who could have been one of the deadliest ninja in the village hold back for the protection of his fellow villagers. For his consideration for his fellows more than anything else, Zachariah had been decided as the next village leader.
