More Than A Merchant?
Sat May 10, 2014 2:05 am
Mission
- Spoiler:
Mission Name: A Missing Merchant
Rank: A
Type: Investigate
Character Requirements: Genin/Chuunin or higher.
Mission Location: Borders, Konoha
Word Count Requirements: 3200
Repeatable? Yes
Reward: 3000 Ryo
Task: A wealthy merchant has gone missing and it is your job to find out where he is. When we went to his house we found it in shambles, meaning that either somebody was looking for something there or he was kidnapped. Use clues in the house to find out what happened to man.
Koaru dashed silently, back-first into the trunk of a large tree in a blur of speed, allowing its shadow to conceal him. He was approaching the end of a bountiful forest, which was beginning to thin out into an open plain. On that open plain was the starting point for Koaru’s latest mission. The young ninja peered just over his shoulders with his Moringan eyes and scanned the area. The only notable thing in sight was a large mansion complex that was now shattered remains. The boy coolly collected what he could from the scene and tried to piece a story together. The jade colored orbs zig zagged from window to window from the shadows. From what he could see, there was no signs of life. A closer look would reveal to Koaru that there are signs of a fire throughout the entire building. Koaru could detect traces of chakra coming from the building, especially in the areas of the house that seemed to be burnt. A result of ninjutsu, Koaru presumed. The question was, why would someone do this to another person's home? The structure of the house hinted that the owner was most likely wealthy. Koaru, however, knew that there was more to this than just a common robbery. Ninja were here.
“A crib like this won't attract the babes. What the hell happened here?”
Koaru asked after he returned his lurking head to its original position behind. He awaited his captain’s arrival. From there, hopefully, Koaru would be debriefed on the mission at hand was well as what his assignment will be. When he was called to duty, Koaru was told who exactly he would be going on this mission with. Koaru felt a chill down his spine. It would be his first time ever going on an important mission with that guy…

Brittle bristles of grass crunched and cracked beneath Koaru's feet. That was the only sound that one would hear, that is, until a young, familiar voice whispered into Koaru's ear.
"That's what we're here to find out. I'll scout ahead to make sure everything's clear for you near the front door. Get to the canopy, make sure no one lingers on these grounds."
There was a voice, but, if one were to look around Koaru in any direction, they would see no one. Naturally, when green grass is neglected its daily drink of water, it becomes more inclined to leave the imprints of a traveler, and his companion. Perhaps an observer could notice the green grass that folded to form footsteps behind Koaru. Perhaps they would notice the second set of footprints leading to Koaru's right. But there was no one there to form these footprints so... how?
There would be no more footprints. A moment of silence passed after a gust of hot air passed the very tree the Koaru's back rested against. Then, after a minute or two, the two large doors of the building slowly swung open, prompting dust and ash to kick into the air, and fall from ceiling. Koaru was welcome to enter.
As though an invisible curtain had been pulled down that hid his frame, Kenzo's sturdy, muscular physique was revealed to the naked eye. Those long, silky, raven black threads that hung from his head ominously shifted and rippled as the heat that pervaded through Kenzo's body permeated from his body throughout the home he stood in the doorway of. He was garbed head to toe in black: black combat boots, black pants, a black long sleeve shirt hidden beneath a even darker flak jacket, black gloves, and, in his hand, a black baseball bat that rested upon his shoulder. Dark, onyx eyes looked towards at the ground nearest to the house, where the grass had turned dry and brown. His head turned towards the plains. With two sweeps of those dark eyes to the left then right, he scanned the surrounding forest for any hints at exactly what the hell had happened to this old house, but he found nothing. As far as he could tell, there was no one here anymore, and the moment that Koaru neared his person, Kenzo would inform Koaru.
"Looks like we're all clear. Anything outside?"

“Roger.”
Koaru responded just before the two ninja made their way toward the mansion. Koaru, without the need for any hand seals, flickered from sight, then reappeared hanging upside down from the canopy ledge. Koaru’s shoulder length dread locks dangled making it look like they were spiked upward on Koaru’s head. Koaru wore his Garinado hoodie fully zipped up, showing his clan crest proudly across his back. The ninja peered through the window of the mansion that he was in front of, though it was more gaping hole then window thanks to the destruction the house underwent. Whoever did this to the house was clearly on a rampage, as no stone had been left unturned. The floor separating the first floor of the mansion from the second had been nearly completely blown away, allowing Koaru to see his captain as he surveyed the first floor. Koaru notes blood stains scattered throughout the room Koaru was directly in front of, which seemed to be a den of sorts. There was a chair in the center of the room, and at the base of the chair, were bundles of rope which seemed to have been recently cut.
Koaru turned around to survey the outside area. He was looking for more clues that would help piece this story together. He saw smoke coming from a town not too far from here. ‘That’s Tanzaku Town…’ Koaru jumped over the canopy, using the ledge to alley oop his way through the front door of the mansion. Koaru came to Kenzo’s side to report his findings. The analytical prowess Koaru showed as a shinobi was the reason the Hokage chose Koaru to accompany Kenzo on this mission, and this was the perfect opportunity to show it.
“There’s signs of a struggle in the den on the second floor. Someone was being held captive, and torture isn’t out of the question. I’d say whoever did this to our merchant friend was after something. The window in the den was broken, and the glass shards are outside the house, meaning someone was in a rush to leave the house. And I think I have an idea of where they went…”
Koaru pointed out the window and in the direction of Tanzaku town. Burning cinders and smoke could be seen rising over the cityline.

He's a decent partner. Made sure to check what I didn't.
With a nod, Kenzo stepped out of the building, holding the doorknob and slowly closing the door behind himself as he did. Those dark eyes peeked towards the sky as Kenzo finally noticed it. He pointed towards the farthest of three vertically aligned windows.
"This building has three floors. I only checked the first floor, did you ever get a chance to check the attic?"
He narrowed his dark eyes suspiciously, perking up his ears as a breeze made a pass, prompting the brittle brown and green grass to crackle as though someone else had been transversing the forests, but there had been no one, Kenzo thought. Just in-case, Kenzo kept all of his senses about him. To die on a simple reconnaissance mission such as this one would have been quite dishonoring, but more and more this mission was starting to seem a bit more dangerous. Why was there blood? Where were the bodies? Where was the old man?

Koaru exited the building along with Kenzo. The ominous wind blew over the ninja, and scattered Koaru’s dreads so that they whipped furiously in place. Koaru listened to Kenzo’s point about there being a third floor of the building. There could be more clues or secrets hidden in this house. Koaru formed a hand seal and created a shadow clone at his side from a puff of white smoke. After exchanging a brief glance and nod of the head, the clone climbed to the third floor from the outside. The clone burst through what was left of the glas window and went inside the mansion attic.
Koaru turned to face Kenzo once again. Koaru tried to read Kenzo’s expression and determine what his current feelings about the mission were. Koaru just barely caught a glimpse of concern for the merchant. Reading one’s emotion was difficult, despite Kenzo and Koaru being good friends, when shinobi are raised to abandon all of the like when on a mission. Koaru spoke to Kenzo on the mission’s development in hopes to gain a better perspective from him. Koaru wanted to know how a jounin thinks, and how a jounin handles the immense responsibility on a mission of A rank.
“Captain Kenzo, there seems to be some kind of dangerous activity in the next town. Don’t you think these two occurrences are linked? Perhaps the bandits came after the merchant in pursuit of valueables and discovered that it was in Tanzaku? I wonder what it is that they’re after. There could be a lot of women in danger…can’t we do something?”
Meanwhile, the shadow clone crept through the dark and murky air of the mansion attic, searching for clues. The clone was on guard, holding it’s ninjato closely in hand. After moments of searching through scattered piles of books and traveling through cobwebs and dust, the clone found a chest sealed with fuuinjutsu. Hesitant at first because of assuming they were explosive tags, the clone later realized that it was a seal easily destroyed if enough power is used. The clone gripped its right forearm with its left hand. The clone pressed its first three fingers together and formed a blade of wind style chakra. The chakra manifested as a mas of chakra invisible to the naked eye, to which it would just appear as a minor distortion of space. With the blade of wind, the clone slashed hard, just clipping the chest and slicing the seal in half. The seal glowed for a brief moment before fizzling away into ashes. It was at the same moment that something lurked from the shadowy corner of the room. The shadowy figure descended on the clone with killing intent. The clone barely had time to turn around before the shadow’s sharp blade was deep in the clone’s stomach. The clone dispersed with a defeated look on its face.
Koaru’s eye widened suddenly at the realization of the situation. He would immediately attempt to grab Kenzo by the collar of his flak jacket and bring him against the house wall where they would be out of sight. The air around them grew thick and palpable with tension. It looks like someone was in the mansion, after all. Koaru thought deeply with the information he obtained through the clone’s experience. ‘A chest sealed with fuuinjutsu? Not a common practice for merchants. Was the merchant the one who bounded to that chair?... If the merchant is hiding something here, then what are his assailants looking for in Tanzaku town?’ Koaru’s head began to spin. He rapidly organized his thoughts and addressed his captain.
“There’s a hostile within the mansion. My clone caught a glimpse of the assailant’s face before dispersing. It’s the merchant. He seems to be guarding a chest sealed with ninja fuuinjutsu. What should we do?”
The two of them would have to act fast depending on what Kenzo said in response to the situation. Now that the situation has developed, the ninja would have to prevent the merchant from escaping for interrogation purposes. Moreover, they needed to secure whatever was in that chest. It may be the key to the motives of the attack and they key perspective needed to complete their reconassaince mission.

All possible areas within the home had to be searched, even if it didn't SEEM like there was anyone left with the building. Kenzo had only questioned Koaru about the third floor, and, almost immediately, Koaru had created a shadow clone to ensure that the third floor was clear. As the clone climbed the building, again, Kenzo found himself satisfied with Koaru's immediate response. Although Kenzo had never before taken a partner or a team on a mission with him, he ask for no more from a teammate?
No motions were made towards the third floor by Kenzo. He trusted fully that Koaru could have handled the task. His ears perked up at the sound of Koaru's voice, and he turned his head towards the original to reply.
"We're doing all that we can. Tanzaku Town is always teeming with trouble. There's a chance whatever's going on there is related to this, but we must be certain this area has no more clues to offer before we move on. Don't worry about the women Loverboy. Our mission is to find the old-"
And, before Kenzo could finish, Koaru's eyes were wide open, and he had gripped Kenzo by his collar. Perhaps the most unsafe thing to do on a mission with Kenzo was to suddenly reach in his direction. To Kenzo it was almost as though Koaru's was attacking Kenzo the way he forced Kenzo against the wall, but Kenzo suppressed the natural urge to resist force with force. He said nothing more, he simply waited for an explanation, and he got one. Almost immediately, Kenzo began to climb the wall with all the speed and power of a bear.
"Stick to the shadows, sneak up on him, and subdue him on my signal. Do not kill him. There are too many unanswered questions."
In seconds, Kenzo would climb through the very same window that the clone had entered before rising to a stand from all-fours, his appearance nothing more than a black silhouette hidden by white light. He would peer through the darkness, activating his sharingan to lock onto the figure of the man, ensuring that there were no traps. Rays of light entered the building from almost every direction through many obstructions and holes of varying sizes in the roof. Though Kenzo's eyes would've been locked onto the man before him, he was well aware of his own peripheral vision, trying to spot Koaru's frame.
Kenzo asked the man before him one, simple question.
"Who are you?"

Koaru followed his orders and disappeared swiftly into the shadows within the house, leaving the door slightly ajar. He could sense the urgency in Kenzo’s voice. It was at that point in the mission where things have become do or die. Koaru would jump through the gaping hole between the first and second floors of the mansion, then climb across the ceiling on all fours using chakra to get into the attic. Arriving a few seconds before Kenzo entered through the same window Koaru’s clone once entered from, Koaru crept closer to the mysterious man from his blind spot, careful not to make a sound. After Kenzo questioned the man, Koaru placed a kunai just a centimeter away from the man’s back, making sure the metallic sound of the knife could be heard. Koaru would not say a word, but let his serious demeanor intimidate the man.
The merchant shivered with fear and dropped his knife to clatter on the hard wooden floor. From the blinding sunlight, the merchant could make out Kenzo’s gleaming leaf headband and blazing crimson Sharingan eyes. After a moment of cowering in fear, the merchant finally spoke. “Ohh, I thought you were that group of bandits. They’re after me lucky charms. Those charms have the power to disrupt any sensory system used to protect hidden shinobi villages. If they fall into the wrong hands, many villages may fall. For the right amount of money in exchange, to those bandits, these lucky charms will be magically delicious!” The merchant explained himself with haste, pointing to the chest which was just a few feet away from Koaru. Koaru withdrew his knife, having deemed the merchant as innocent, and kicked the chest open and revealed hundreds of talismans neatly stacked. Their aura of power seemed to glow. In the hands of those bandits, they could be sold to another ninja village and could lead to village invasions or even destructions. It could even mean trouble for Konoha if those talismans ended up in an enemy village.
“So when the bandits arrived at your door, tied you up and interrogated you, you lied and told them that the talismans were in Tanzaku town to get yourself out of harm’s way… Tch, who knows how many women are suffering because of your selfishness, you bastard..”
Koaru spoke with slowly tightening fists. Rage was building within Koaru for the merchant. When the merchant responded with, “Hey, no skin off my back. I’m a valued merchant, and business has to go on.” Koaru gritted his teeth, and clearly needed to be held back. A simple reminder that this was a mission that would require him to be devoid of emotion would be enough to quell him. Koaru would eventually make his way to the attic window to redirect his attention. Koaru would notice that birds were scattering in the forest between Tanzaku town and the mansion they were currently in. That could only mean that the bandits had pieced together that they had been deceived. The two ninja would need to come to a consensus, and fast. The mission, after all, did not call for any unnecessary combat. With the merchant found and the reason for his disappearance discovered, all that was left was preventing those bandits from getting their hands on those talismans.
“Captain, the bandits must have figured it out. They’re on their way back here. We gotta move…”
Koaru turned away from the window to face Kenzo and awaited his orders. He avoided eye contact with the merchant. He didn’t want to have to kill him.

Just as Kenzo thought. The man was being influenced by the one emotion fear. Fear, it makes people stupid. That explains that males actions. Who in the right mind would attack a shinobi, knowing that this world's shinobi are all extremely dangerous beyond belief? Only a madman. Only a shinobi. Regardless, the mission had been complete.
"The fool survived this far. Our mission was only to find him. Like he said, we're valued Shinobi, and there are more missions to be completed. Whether he live or dies today... No skin off my back."
With that said, Kenzo would turn around, and leap out of the window. He wondered how much the village actually cared about this man's life. He seemed like a little more than a merchant. Was he a productive human resource, or just some random old man living in the outskirts of Konoha? Kenzo's paused to think soon ended, and he began to slowly walk away from the house.
"Let's go Koaru!"
With that, Kenzo's figure would blur, and he would vanish into thin air, utilizing one of the most fundamental technique's known to almost every ninja in existence, the shunshin no jutsu. The moment his body vanished, all would be silent in the once sprawling forest that surrounded the man's home, for the vicious creatures that the man feared would return to destroy him would have never made it to their destination. They would never been seen again, but what happened on that day was a secret that could not be told just yet. Those events, those deaths, those screams, that tale, it was all a story for another day.
