Awakening (IO)
Sat Jul 22, 2017 2:47 am
The morning sun had just risen over the sandy horizon of Hoshigakure. The tall, tan-colored buildings towered over it, appearing a silhouettes and obstructing pieces of the fiery orange glow that the sun gave off. Yurei Uchiha fluttered his eyes open as the sun peered through his window, beckoning his consciousness. The pale Uchiha covered his eyes and rubbed them, forcing them to adjust to the bright light after hours of being hidden away in darkness. Yurei yawned, massaging his eyes to ease the pain that soared through the back of his pale eyes. He slowly rose out of bed, leveling his back and legs into a ninety degree angle. He twisted his torso, popping his back with a loud sound similar to that of an old tree snapping under the force of a tornado.
The Uchiha rubbed his back muscles as he tried to get out of the small bed, relieving the pent-up tension within them. I really need a new bed… He took a deep breath, stretching out his lungs, and then he stood. The pale genin touched his toes, igniting the burning fire in his calves. Albeit groggy, Yurei was eager to set out. The past few days had been eventful, and the lanky boy was eager to see what the day would present to him. His feet paired with the chilling floor as he made his way to his clothing rack, grasping his kimono. The Uchiha pushed his arms through the slick silk sleeves and folded his kimono around his body, tying it with his cyan belt.
Yurei yawned as he walked outside his room, sliding open the wooden door. He covered his mouth as he descended through the hall, finally coming to a stop in the kitchen. His mother seemed to still be asleep. Good. She’s had been working too hard as of late. The Uchiha reached within his cabinets and withdrew a glass. He drew water from the sink and quickly filled it, drinking from the cup to quench his thirsty and rejuvenating him. The Uchiha found it easier to start the morning after drinking a class of water.
The pale boy quickly set the glass of water aside and reached for the spare change his mother had left on the counter for him. The Uchiha quickly placed the coins inside his robe and walked to the sliding door where he kept his bag. He opened it, revealing his headband and weapon pouches, and he swiftly put them on his person. Yurei reached for his door before turning to face his mother’s. He hadn’t been spending much time with her. Maybe I should stay. I’ll go get some breakfast stuff for tomorrow and surprise her.
Yurei, proud of the idea, went on about his day, eager to make the next a success without wasting today’s potential. So, on he went. The genin marched through the sidewalks, passing each of the small homes in the housing districts swiftly in order to avoid the growing, unforgivable heat of Hoshigakure’s day.

Stargazing is incredible. Especially so, what with the concept of constellations, individual bright lights in the sky and how they all come together to make beautiful patterns in the heavens for the observer to witness. There is a certain sense of satisfaction to being so complete. But that is not how Damon felt. He had a basic idea of what he wanted to do, but no real route to achieve his goal. All that was driving him was mere ambition. A desire to become a legend. But what was there to do? There were many shinobi that had come before him and performed amazing feats, known far and wide for their accomplishments, most often gained in battle. What if there was a way to surpass them? To become greater than every warrior? The elimination of war itself. Not only would this bring about an era of peace, it would let the world know that he, Damon Uchiha, would be the man who revolutionized the world. If only he was strong enough. That was how he had spent his night, swinging back and forth in a makeshift hammock on the rooftop of a nonspecific building. He had barely slept throughout the night as he pondered his own shortcomings. He had been practically useless as of late, doing nothing for the sake of himself or the village in which he resided. Is this how he would become something greater than himself? Sitting back while others became more powerful than him? He needed something to spur him. To push him to greatness. Something to evoke his motivation from wherever it had disappeared.
The sunlight pierced his closed eyelids, causing him to see orange instead of the comforting blackness that allowed him to sleep. While it took up a considerable amount of time that could be spent doing other things, it was more than welcome when one was exceedingly tired. He blinked several times before opening his eyes, trying to adjust to the harsh light of day. He sat up and swung his legs over the side before allowing his body to drop to the ground below. His worn out self fell on his side with a thud, causing him to let out a groan. He was out of shape. Practice. Motivation. Everything really. Letting out a further groan, he slowly managed to push himself off of the ground. Damon stood to his feet with yet another groan. He had to do something today. Making his way down to the ground, probably in some extra way like climbing down buildings, Damon would then move onwards into the city, until he recognized the familiar chakra signature of Yurei, his brother in bloodline, apparently. The last time the two had seen each other, a piece of history for Damon had newly fallen into place. He discovered a part of himself that he did not even know existed beforehand. Maybe today he could learn some more about his supposed clan and heritage. “Hey, Yurei!” Maybe the fellow Uchiha could help the newly appointed chuunin find some sense of purpose. The chakra signature of the albino seemed stronger than it was before, causing a quizzical gaze to cross Damon’s face for just a moment before he went back to his resting expression. He slid down the side of a building because he was extra as heck before he would land in front of the boy. “I thought I sensed your chakra signature. What are you up to, today?” Damon hoped to tag along on literally whatever it was.

Yurei looked up at the sound of the familiar voice. It was Damon Uchiha. Ecstatic, Yurei smiled vividly, providing a nice contrast to the somber day when the two had gone to collect flowers for his father’s grave. That was a dark time, but now, after lamenting, Yurei was on the path to healing and forgiving. Now his father served as a reminder of both his biggest mistake and his greatest goal and aspiration: achieving peace between the shinobi and the villagers. That was his mission, now, and he more devoted than ever to find success.
“Damon!” Yurei shouted, brightly smiling and lightly laughing. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you. I’m doing much better than before. A little time was all I needed, and, now, I’m focused on a new goal. How are you? Are you well? What have you been up to? Anything interesting?”
These questions filled Yurei’s head, but he could not help but ask them as soon as they popped into his brain. He hadn’t seen Damon in weeks, maybe a month. Time was flying by too quickly for Yurei to tell. Every day was filled with a new adventure, a new goal to set, and, thus far, Yurei had accomplished every one of them, growing in power and in influence.
The pale Uchiha could not help but smile. Akio was funny and kind, as was Komon, and Sakana meant well, but he and Damon shared a special bond. Be it from their Uchiha bloodline or the shared tragedies, Yurei always felt a deeper connection to the dark-haired boy, although why, he did not know.
The sun, now higher in the sky, showered them in a warm, welcoming light despite the heat.

Damon was slightly taken aback at the barrage of questions. He had never really been met with such enthusiasm before, especially when he was in what could really only be classified as a slump. He decided to answer each question in the order that they were asked of him, “I’m doing all right. I’m well in a manner of speaking, yes. Healthy at the very least. And I actually have just recently been promoted to the rank of chuunin.” Damon flashed a smile, the first he had really done in a while. “If you wanted to do a higher ranked mission later on, I’d be happy to escort you. We should also grab Akio, if he’s not doing anything, but for now, let’s just catch up a bit.” His smile turned into a rather confident smirk. “In fact, let’s see what you’ve learned. Care for a friendly spar?” Damon said this as he looked behind him momentarily, mentally mapping a route to take. “Follow me, I know a place.” The two could walk and talk on their way there, catching up and discussing whatever.

Yurei smiled brightly as Damon answered his barrage of excited questions, but one answer stood out to him? “Chuunin?” Yurei asked in amazement. “Congratulations! You must be so proud. I’m waiting to take my second exam, myself,” Yurei said with a smile. The two walked on, catching up, when Damon had asked if he wanted to do a higher rank mission. Yurei had done them before, but, now that Damon was a chuunin, it could be much more regular. “I’d love to go,” Yurei replied, thinking of Akio. “I’ll have to see when Akio and Esu are available. Should be fun!”
The pale Uchiha continued walking as Damon offered a spar. The two hadn’t exactly fought one another, save for the instance Yurei used a genjutsu on him, but that didn’t really count. The Uchiha was however, fully prepared to fight Damon. Yurei had learned a lot since last they met, and the Uchiha jumped at the opportunity. “Sure! I’d be happy to spar with you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen what you’re able to do exactly. Just watch out, I’ve been doing a lot since we last met.”
Yurei’s words did not emanate with arrogance or a rivalry, but rather a genuine remark. “I think I can learn a lot from fighting you, especially with the second exam coming up.”
The genin took a deep breath, following Damon as he lead him along. The boy then recalled a remark Damon had gave. Chakra signature? “Hey, Damon,” Yurei asked inquisitively, “what’s a chakra signature? I haven’t read anything about that.”

“I know a place. Just keep following me.” Damon would then answer the follow up question, “A chakra signature? So basically everyone with potent chakra has their own individual reading. Like your chakra signature is brighter than Akio’s for instance. His signature is pretty dim, because his chakra isn’t as potent as yours.” Damon took a moment to really evaluate the chakra signature of Yurei. He was already familiar with the glow that it emitted, but he had not taken the time to realize how strong it had become since the two had last met. How far will you go? He looked at Yurei analytically. What is the limit to your power. To your potential? He kept these things to himself as the two would continue down the walkway Damon was leading them down. “Try it now. With me. You need to imagine your own chakra mixing with my own. Learn how my chakra feels. What it looks like. What it is.” The chakra of the Uchiha would have a grey tint to the normal blue of chakra, looking like the blue glow from moonlight. “Focus on me and then we can see if there is anyone else around with a chakra signature as well.” Damon channeled lightning chakra throughout his body, enhancing his already impressive chakra levels. He could hear the familiar chirping of chidori in his own mind as his arm emitted a faint glow.

Yurei watched Damon as they walked, the dark-haired Uchiha explaining everything. With his Sharingan, Yurei could see chakra mass, but identifying people based on their chakras seemed more difficult. It required keen observation, no doubt, but that was something Yurei was good at. And, if his plethora of jutsu were any example, he possessed a sharp memory. “So, it’s kinda like a fingerprint, right?” Yurei would say.
The Uchiha tried to refrain from using his sharingan to observe Damon’s chakra, instead attempting to feel it on his own. Yurei stretched out, focusing on Damon in what was probably and uncomfortable, yet unintentional stare, as if he were perhaps constipated or losing oxygen.
The Uchiha focused on him deeply, until he felt something. Yurei could detect the Uchiha’s chakra signature, at least feel it. It wasn’t the same as his Sharingan visually, but he could see Damon’s greyish chakra signature. The pale boys rose his index finger and thumb to his mouth, eyeing Damon’s wild chakra. It emanated with chakra greater than anyone he had seen thus far, even with his Sharingan.
The Uchiha squinted his eyes. “I think I’ve got it,” he said. “I can kinda make it out. Your chakra feels calmer. At least to me. Hm.”
Yurei maintained this as the two walked, slowly becoming familiar with the boy’s chakra signature. “So this helps me to identify people? How far does it go exactly? What do you use it for?”
The albino Uchiha wasn’t particularly fond of asking all these questions, but furthering his knowledge was essential.

“It’s exactly like a fingerprint. No two are alike.” Of course, how two shinobi knew that in a world that was arguably incapable of reading fingerprints, it was hard to tell. Oh, well. Damon had never felt the desire to use his sharingan to see chakra, as he had had very little knowledge about its capabilities or what it even was until Yurei had told him. The two kept walking, albeit more slowly as Yurei seemed like he was having problems with his digestive system. “Prune juice should help you with that, buddy. Nature’s laxative.” Damon tried to not feel weirded out by the constant staring coming from the boy. “It doesn’t usually go that far,” he replied. Ballpark estimate would be 100 meters, but Damon did not have an exact measurement, so he refrained from giving a definitive answer. “I can tell when you’re around me, but not usually where you are in the city. Then again, I’ve become so accustomed to seeing stronger signatures that I accidentally tune some out. And for that final question, you can use it to sense other shinobi, people that can be threats to you. Think of it as a sixth sense, kind of. But you have to be careful, because some people can bypass it.” He gave the boy a devilish smirk as he utilized his chakra suppression skill, bringing his chakra level down to a solid zero. If Damon were to be looked at with either chakra sensory or the sharingan of the other Uchiha, he would not be able to have his chakra sensed. “Tada. Now we can play a good old fashioned game of hide and seek, ooooooooooooooor,” he said dragging out his conjunction, “we can see if we can spot shinobi throughout the city, on the way to where we’ll be sparring.” He clasped his hands together, making a rather faint clapping sound. “Either way is a form of recon work, which every shinobi should have.” Now that he was a chuunin, Damon’s ego miiiiiiiiight have inflated just a bit. He’d wait for Yurei’s response.

“I don’t need any prune juice,” Yurei said, smiling. “I’m trying to focus. Don’t make me laugh.” The boy nodded as Damon finished answering his questions. 100 meters seemed to be the extent of it. A reasonably large range, indeed, but Yurei could not help but wonder if it could be extended to any degree, or if possibilities existed outside of just identification.
Yurei’s visual of Damon’s chakra suddenly disappeared after the boy had brought up chakra suppression. That must be what shinobi use on recon missions. Sensory shinobi would be able to detect chakra signatures. This was their counter. But at what cost?
Yurei nodded, carefully processing the information Damon had presented him with. “I see,” he said. “Let’s go test out how well I do with this. You lead the way, ok? Then we can spar.”
Yurei wasn’t much for talking during this. At least not as much as Damon was. Chuunin had definitely gone to his head, but being flashy and, at least, somewhat arrogant was always a part of him.

“Perfect,” Damon remarked as he led him around a street corner. And the two then found themselves at a destination the Uchiha was planning to lead them through. The marketplace. One of the most crowded regions in the city. “Alright. Here we are. Let’s just do something simple and try to spot shinobi.” He did not feel the need to explain a part that both boys would know all too well. Many shinobi of the City Blessed by the Stars prefer to hide in plain sight; that is, that they choose to blend in and not make their presence known. “And by ‘we’, I mean you.” There was probably something more instructive that he could have said, but this was not breastfeeding. Yurei was going to be thrown into the deep end of the pool, while Damon watched from the sidelines and would be ready to hop in and save the boy if he was drowning. Maybe. Damon tried out his own chakra sensory, getting ‘pings’ as it were across the span of the marketplace. Some of these shinobi may be friends with civilians in secret, as some could be seen talking to groups with no signatures. Others were left by themselves, most likely afraid at the mere concept of being hated by the villagers. Not that Damon could blame them at all, as he had experienced firsthand of how awful that could be. “Alright, I’ve spotted a few. Let’s see if you can find them as well. Just remember: try using your own chakra to find theirs.”
