Substitute Teacher Ryu

Ryuken was tasked with an odd mission for the next few days. One of the teachers at the shinobi academy was seriously ill and they needed someone to fill in. The job landed on Ryu, but he didn't mind. In fact he was actually a little excited. He had been an instructor at the academy for a few years and enjoyed his time there. He only left his position out of necessity. The village needed capable shinobi to send into the field, and so he couldn't hide behind his cushy desk job any longer. Coming back to it, even if only for a few days, would be a refreshing change of pace.
The class he was tasked with was a group of soon to be graduates. They only had a couple more months left before they would be full fledged genin. This would be a great opportunity to see what the next generation was like and hopefully leave them with some added knowledge. Ryuken was a different man now compared to when he was a teacher. When he started out at the academy he was a chuunin who had seen very little actual action. His field work experience was slim, but his textbook knowledge was above average so he was able to perform as a teacher. However, now he had been out in the field for years. He had taken on missions unlike any he had seen before the civil war. With added experience he had a better understanding of what it truly meant to be a Hoshi ninja, and what it took to survive.
He arrived at the academy early and made his way into what would be his classroom for the next three days. Slightly refurbished from when he taught at the institution, the building was damaged by the civil war, it still felt the same. He took a seat at the desk in the front of the room and layed his Iron maiden puppet up against the wall behind him. He used to use the same puppet as a sort of teacher's assistant back in the day. It used to win over plenty of the children and give them more drive to try harder. Ryu felt that the students should be exposed to the great things chakra can achieve. For him, he remembered watching his clan members perform beautiful shows with their puppetry skills. It wasn't always about combat and war, there was an appreciation for the artistic use of ninjutsu. Seeing the warriors make their puppets perform for joy and not bloodshed made young Ryuken even more inspired to hone his craft. That feeling he had as a child was what he hoped to leave these kids with by the time he left.
Students began to shuffle in to the room and take their seats. Most of them looked at Ryu a little strange as they entered. He always figured it was the pink hair, he was used to the odd looks. A couple of students burst into the room just as the bell rang. He counted 20 students, it looked like everyone in the class was present.

Ryu stood up and cleared his throat, "Hello class, your usual instructor Mr. Yagami is out sick. I am Ryuken Kugutsui and I will be filling in for a few days." He would say it all as natural as the day he left. Teaching came natural to him and it was a big part of his growing up.
Just to get a feel for what the class already knew and what they did not, he made a small quiz for the whole class. He smiled as he connected chakra threads to the Maiden and the puppet rose to its feet. He kept the movements looking as humanlike as he could and handed the quiz over to the puppet. Ryu could see the surprise on the student's faces. He began to have the maiden pass out the papers to each student.
"Don't worry, that is my technique. I'm a puppet specialist and I like to use it in my everyday life. For example as a teacher's assistant." He would say to answer the obvious question on the kid's minds. "You see the skills you learn here don't have to only be used for fighting. In fact I use my puppetry more for mundane things like chores around the house or passing out papers, than I do for combat."
He wanted to get across to the children that what they were learning were useful skills. Not only on the battlefield but for general purpose. Learning to focus chakra on one's feet for example was an invaluable skill that allowed for things like walking on water or straight up a tree. Ryu spent the day having his iron maiden handle most of the grunt work for the class. He was pleasantly surprised by the quiz results and noted to himself to commend the student's normal teacher on doing a fine job. He spent the whole first day getting to know the students and their techniques. Some were from interesting clans with unique abilities while others shined in areas like taijutsu and bukijutsu. It was good to see a strong mix of talented individuals.
The days seemed to fly by and his last lesson was coming to a close. "I just want to finish by thanking you all for having me in your class and I'm glad to say that Hoshi's future is in good hands. I'm a little sad to have to go back to my regular duties, teaching has always been fun for me, but I hope to someday see you all again out in the field, as full fledged shinobi." He would say, only slightly fighting back a tear. He had really enjoyed his time teaching again. Maybe some day when the village was more stable he could come back and stay permanently. That future would be a long ways away though. The peace in the village was certain not to last and Ryu needed to be ready for when it all goes away. Right now, Hoshi needed him not as a teacher but as someone who could handle himself in the field.
He lugged his puppet back home over his shoulder and turned in early for the night. He had a long day of training ahead of him after doing nothing but teach for three days.
