Tough Pills to Swallow [IO]
Fri Nov 20, 2020 8:35 am
- Mission:
- Mission Name: Trust me, I'm a chemist
Rank:C-Rank
Type:Augmentation Farming
Character Requirements:None
Mission Location: Island Country
Word Count Requirements:2000
Challenges:N/A
Repeatable?Yes, over and over, by the same people
NPC?No
Reward:2,000 Ryo, 5AP, 1x Mercury
Task: The elusive quicksilver, or mercury, is not an easy material to obtain. Verily, it's an entire process to it, which you can now find out due to some mysterious breakout which lead some of our workers terribly ill. You needn't concern yourself with it. Get us some Cinnabar ore, refine it into mercury, and if you do a good enough job of it, you'll get your own vial. Bring your own protective masks.
The alchemist's workshop is uncomfortably cramped and hot. Murata gazes at the elaborate-looking equipment, furnaces blazing, vapor bubbling. She has made attempts to dip her toes in to reading on chemistry, but the books at the Academy are so arcane that it all still seems like wizardry to her. Their client, the owner of the workshop, has hired the team after a rash of sicknesses has claimed his workers.
A fey noble who strikingly reminds Murata of a tiny, shivering purse dog, dabs sweat from his face in the nearby office. She catches him repeatedly glancing out at them through the little window on the door.
"Now, I know you all aren't necessarily familiar with the equipment," the alchemist says. He is an oddly dressed young man, wrapped in silks, a little silvery charm clasped right around his throat. "Don't worry, don't worry, it practically all runs itself. Just take a look at -" he hauls a book of instructions that look like they could kill a man if dropped on him from a short distance on to the table " - Whew. Just take a peek at the booklet if you're confused, ah? I'll be back to help, I, erm," he glances to the window, where the noble is looking increasingly tiny and shivering, "Have to go... take care of one of my customers."
The alchemist vanishes into the office, leaving the team alone. Murata lifts the cover of the huge tome, giving it a grimace.
"I believe, in the service of honesty, I should tell you all now that I never went to school."

It had been a standard morning for Kato. He'd made his way through the morning routine that he was now very accustomed too, stretches, calisthenics and a nutritious meal. He had been interrupted by one of the Mist villages carrier pigeons, another thing he was becoming increasingly accustomed too over the past couple of weeks.
The contents of the scroll that the carrier pigeon told Kato about his latest mission. This time he had been placed in a group with three other Genin, they had been hired by a local alchemist. Apparently a rash of sickness had taken over his workers and their help was required to help remedy the situation.
Kato found himself in a hot cramped room that was rather uncomfortable, staring at the assortment of technical equipment that cluttered the room with a sense of unease. He had never been the studious type, he generally didn't have the patience for it. Kato felt uneasy in the room, he was well out of his element amongst this scientific equipment and there was something about the client that seemed suspicious.
The others can easily see the look of grimace and discomfort as the large tome is placed before them and they are left to their own devices "Honouring that same service of honesty, I am well out of my element here. I've never had the temperament for academic pursuits like this.. you've seen that firsthand Murata" As Kato addresses Murata the memory of their meeting flashes in his mind, especially that unique ability she possesses.

A mission.
Fair. Kazushi had officially returned to active duty for a while now, yet had made no effort on his part to be an active ninja, and it seemed the Administration was tired of waiting for him to make the first move. They had respected him enough to not push him, but as with all things, good will runs out. A request to assist the local alchemist. Hm. Might be a decent way of starting off. He was skin and bones, these days, the clothes he wore before his trip to the hospital were now all baggy, even though he was supposedly going through puberty and should be on the verge of a growth spurge.
“Clinical depression… a spell of inactivity… both highly dangerous for a teenage boy. You need to get back out there. Become active. Find your own way. I understand you think things are bleak now… but they’ll be much worse in the future.”
Fine. I’ll do the mission.
Clad in ill fitting clothes, with a face bandaged that revealed the indent on his gaunt cheeks and wiry neck, blue coat billowing with the wind and long dark hair kept away from his piercing blue eyes, Kazushi found himself among the peers he was to take the mission with. The book thrown by the fidgety officer thumped against the hard wood of the table, before disappearing to tend to the shivering man in the other room. Kazushi caught a glimpse of the creature; meek, curled in blankets, afraid of the world. The ghost of the future.
Depressed, inactive, and not growing like a normal boy ought to. The blood of the Old Kiri, lava and steam, and a thousand generations of warriors, meant to die a meek, old man. Kazushi approached the table while two of the others talked. They shared a bond, apparently. Kazushi had known what familiarity was. His blood brother was somewhere out there. He may meet him again.
“I studied the letters and numbers, but I’m not very chemically inclined.” As he approached, he politely exhaled an “excuse me” before approaching the book, turning pages in hopes of finding something that would spark his attention.

Gonk woke up and with a yawn, pulled himself out of bed.. Rubbing his eyes, he walked over to the windowsill where he knew there would be a mission waiting for him, there always was.
“Another C rank,” Gonk thought as he broke the seal and read the contents of the scroll. “Mercury… illness... vial. This all seems a bit complicated and it’s a bit suspicious so many of them got sick.” But Gonk had been assigned the mission so he couldn’t just refuse to go. With a sigh he pulled on his shirt and pants and walked into the kitchen. He poured himself a bowl of cereal and quickly started eating so as not to be late.
“I wonder if shinobi get health benefits,” Gonk pondered as he thought of the possible dangers of this mission. He had never been scared going into a mission before, but this one frightened him. It was the fact that he could get sick or die, but he couldn’t avoid it with skill and hard work. It all came down to luck. Gonk walked over to the alchemist workshop and entered, to find three other genin already there.
“Sorry am I late?” Gonk asked, a bit worried. He, like everyone else in the dim room, was wearing a mask, so it was hard to see who his squadmates were, but Gonk recognized Kato and Murata.
“Hey Kato, hey Murata,” Gonk said, smiling under his mask. He then turned to the third member of the squad. “What’s your name?”
Gonk took a look at all of the equipment around the room and asked “how does all of this stuff work. They don’t teach this in the academy. Or at least not that I learned. I skipped my last year so I don’t know if it was taught then,” Gonk looked around and realized nobody understood how it worked. The shinobi who Gonk didn’t recognize was reading a manual, possibly on how to operate the equipment, but didn’t seem to have any luck yet. Gonk sighed, it was going to be another tedious mission.

Murata nods sagely as everybody voices that they have no idea what they are doing. It would appear that they are hosed.
"Well,"
BOOM
The door to the workshop soars across the room, slamming into Murata and wiping her clear off of her feet. A bear of a man, pale-skinned and covered in scars, lowers his foot from where he has kicked the door clean off of its hinges. He dips his head to walk into the room, looking about suspiciously as two more goons lurk behind, only marginally less intimidating than the first, all of them armed with nasty-looking swords (both in the sense that they are large and that they appear poorly taken care of).
The gigantic man looks slowly at the gathered shinobi, one face to the other (excluding Murata, who is currently face-down on the floor and groaning), before settling on Kato as the presumed adult in the room.
"You lot don't look like chemists," he hums, furrowing his brow. With surprising delicacy, he reaches into the pocket of his coat, drawing out a little folded flyer in his huge hands, unfolding it with two fingers and presenting it to the group.
The flyer is emblazoned with a phoenix, flames wrapping around a glass jar of little blue pills. The name and address of the business advertised is somewhat familiar, as it is the workshop they are currently all standing in.
"Hey, you said there wouldn't be ninja. What gives," one of the men in the back squawks, squeaky-voiced for his size.
"Ah, these're just small fry, relax. Gentlemen," he says amicably, pointing to the jar on the little flyer with a huge finger, "Would you please direct us to the owner of this establishment? We are here for the miracle pills."

Kato sits trying to make sense of the equipment around him, feelings of unease sitting in his stomach. The fact that the rest of his team also seemed to be clueless about their task wasn't helping either and there was something he couldn't quite let go about their client, he gave Kato a weird vibe.
With a sudden loud thud the door that he had entered through came flying off its hinges, clearing out Murata in the process. In through the now empty door frame stooped three mean looking goons that Kato didn't recognise carrying nasty looking swords at their hips.
Almost as soon as the first goon had stepped through the doorway Kato had spud and stood right in front of the man, his sense of unease making him alert to the sudden intrusion. Kato stared at the large goon with the intimidating frame with a sense of mild fury, it wouldn't be completely perceptible to the giant as Kato was wearing a black protective mask that was covering the majority of his face but he'd feel some of its effect regardless. Angry that this large oaf had knocked his comrade to the ground with his rude entrance Kato began to berate him "Who do you think you are entering a room like that!" Kato knew Murata would be alright, based on their meetings so far it seems that she's made of tough stuff but he was enraged all the same.
The sound of glass equipment clinking within the room caused by that sudden entrance soon settled as the apparent leader of this unfamiliar trio pulled the flyer from his pocket and showed it to the team. Secret of eternal life? miracle pills? this didn't smell right to Kato, he suspected this may relate to the sense of unease he has been feeling while in this room. "This is the first I'm hearing about miracle pills and the supposed secret of eternal life" Kato stood blocking the lead mans way into the room "I'm sure we can find the owner of this establishment and send him your way but you'll have to wait outside. Your presence is not wanted in this room." As Kato finished speaking he gave the large man a menacing stare and prepared himself for any negative retaliation from the trio of nasty swordsmen. He felt confident that his speed and gentle fist technique can easily deal with them, especially in this more enclosed space.

The black haired teen read through the manual’s index, where it seemed the alchemist (if he had even been the one to write it) had gathered a plethora of information regarding the ore they sought after and the process of extracting the material from it, with close to half of the book being about the sole history and earliest applications of the elusive material. A blue skinned lad, seemingly about his own age, approached him and asked for his name. Kazushi’s blue eyes met the dark sclera and golden irises of the Hoshigaki. “Kazushi”, he said, “Terumi”, he added. It was not every day one got to meet the old blood of the Kirigakure, even though just as soon as they got the introduction out of the way the Hoshigaki lad moved away. It wasn’t too hard to tell what he was; not many blue skinned people walked around with gills on their cheeks. Kazushi may be ignorant on many things, but he took remarkable pride in his heritage and the heritage of his motherland. What good was to be the Blood of the Old Kirigakure if he couldn’t even tell when he met it?
Just as Kazushi came upon the instruction for extracting the mercury from the ore, the door banged open and flew through the room, taking Murata down with it. Kazushi had been startled, a minor and hopefully imperceptible jolt causing him to hop on his spot, as he turned around hard to see the three figures leaning their way into the room through the door hole. Kato, the massive redhead who had been assigned to the mission with the kids, took his stance between the rest of the group and the newcomers, and in spite the size difference, it would seem a much brighter fire roared within him in comparison with the thugs. Something about his amble told Kazushi he was not someone he wanted to come to blows with. Mayhaps if he had been stronger he might’ve held himself with the same confidence, yet, as a recovery shamble and shade of a real person, the umbral haired kid felt more of an inconvenience than an actual boon to his team.
If Gonk had told him his name, he would call out to him, if not, he would just call him by his clan name, before saying “please help the lass up. We got work to do. Mister Redhead, if you would escort our guests out of the door…”
He would continue shortly after, reading from the pages.
“We need to take the ore and heat it up.” He pointed to the crates with ore. “It needs to be heated up, and from that heat, the condensation will produce the mercury we seek.” He looked over to the heating apparatus; kilns of sorts where the heating would take place, and a cold glass above to allow the evaporated mercury to slowly drip onto containers.

The unfamiliar boy introduced himself as Kazushi Terumi.
“I’m Gonk Hoshigaki,” Gonk introduced himself. ``It's a pleasure to meet a fellow Blood of Old Kirigakure.” Gonk hadn’t had much in the ways of schooling, but he did learn about the clans of old Kirigakure and their importance.
“If only there were more of them remaining,” Gonk thought. Kazushi went back to the book he was studying and Gonk decided to examine the equipment. Just as he bent down to look at a vial of a strange liquid, the door to the room burst off its hinges and knocked Murata to the ground. Kazushi called out for Gonk to help Murata as Kato faced the thugs alone. Gonk quickly ran over to Murata and helped her to her feet. Gonk quickly turned to the thugs and listened to the conversation between them and Kato. For some reason, the leader of the three thought a miracle pill could be found here.
“Miracle pills? What the hell is the place,” Gonk thought, confused. The thugs were asked to leave by both Kato and Kazushi, an order to which they reluctantly complied. As soon as they were gone, Kazushi announced that he had found out how to obtain the mercury. After he explained, they all busied themselves with trying to set up the equipment correctly. Once they finally got it set up something occurred to Gonk.
“Do we even have the ore?” Everybody looked up from their work and looked around for the ore to no avail. “Well shit, where do you think we can find some?” Gonk looked around to see if anybody knew.

"Only one a day! Keep it to one a day, please!" The alchemist calls after the noble shakily stepping out through the workshop, a large glass bottle of blue pills clutched in his slender hands.
Murata draws her heavy club from her back, stepping after the noble with a broad grin on her face as she spots an opportunity for justified retribution.
"Erm, miss, please do not bother my clients," the alchemist says, rubbing his forehead nervously. "I am not sure his constitution could - oh dear." He has just noticed that his place of business no longer has a door.
"I will not be bothering anyone! Unless they bother him!" she calls back. "We will fix the door on our way out!"
The sequence of events outside is fairly predictable. The most shocking thing is that the thugs had, indeed, politely waited outside until the appearance of the quivering noble offered them a much simpler opportunity to get their hands on these so-called immortality pills. Well, simpler until Murata stepped out the door. Sounds of distant violence and shouting filter into the workshop as the alchemist claps his hands with a deep breath, looking over how the team is doing.
"...well, this is a start," he says, turning to a tarp in the corner of the room and pulling it down to reveal a large mound of reddish stone. There is a loud 'thunk!' from outside of steel against flesh. "Let's, erm, get to work."
It is a strange, fascinating process. The silvery, alien metal produced by roasting the cinnabar is quickly, carefully gathered by the alchemist and ferried to his office as soon as it is drawn from the ore. Murata returns after a few minutes with a fresh bruise on her head and a pleased grin, blinks at all of the strange scientific goings-on, and busies herself with repairing the door instead of getting involved in all of that chemistry. It seams the rest of the team has it handled.
When they are finished, the alchemist brings out a small number of vials, each containing a small sample of mercury. "Please do not drink this. Or touch it. Or look at it for too long," he warns. "It is only medicinal in very small doses. But!" He claps. "If anybody is ever interested, please do feel free to inquire about my pharmaceuticals!"
Murata tests the door, squinting at the hinges. The nails are already coming loose again. She pretends she does not see it.
"Now, thank you everyone, but I'm going to be closing up now, so please scurry. I have a court date to get to today."
