The Assassin's First Suna Contract
Sat Jul 03, 2021 10:26 am
Cog in the Wheel (forumotion.com)
From the moment The Assassin had arrived in Sunagakure he knew that he had found something special, a village that defied the norm and embraced the darker side of shinobi life… and yet, one that still managed to keep that criminal element in check through a mixture of respect and fear. That in and of itself was rare, to the point that the majority of the true Black Market hubs in the nations hadn’t truly mastered it… but to see it done so well on a scale this large? It spoke tales of the people that ran this masterful area. Shin had found himself right at home in this village, but alas, he had no plans to settle… At the end of the day this was still a shinobi village, and his freedom was something he would give up for nobody. That Kazekage, Mizuki Ohta… a name he had learned through some very light digging, now she was another thing about Sunagakure that had truly managed to pique his interest. Confident, assured and oh so dangerous, calm and composed violet eyes that looked right through him… everything about her screamed danger to him, and truthfully, that was what attracted him the most.
Danger was something he needed, something that he craved with every fibre of his being… he never felt so alive as when he was fighting for his life, although that didn’t mean that he was some kind of suicidal moron, no… he enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, the fight itself… but he simply wasn’t the type of fight fairly. He had no interest in losing, because at the end of the day losing meant death, and anything was better than that. Heh, he knew full well that he was playing with fire, but he could hardly help himself… god, Hoori would mock him for being so smitten with the fucking Kazekage of all people, but he knew his long time partner would also end up loving the woman. But alas, he couldn’t spend all day swooning over the woman, as impressive as she was. Since his arrival he had put his feelers into the ground, studied the area and the people within, and he had found himself a rather nice contract. Not an official mission for Sunagakure, although he would be surprised if this contract hadn’t been taken out by someone with the interests of the village in mind. Heh, what a strange thought… a village that took out a Missing-Nin contract to preserve its own interests, and avoid potentially endangering their own shinobi.
The contract was simple, track down a new bandit group in the area and figure out what their deal was. From what he could gather these were not your typical thugs, they were both well trained and organised, and they had chosen to set up shop in Wind Country of all places… it was strange to say the least. Groups like that, the smarter ones, tended to avoid major countries where they could, and that went double when that country housed a dangerous Shinobi Village, which told him that they were after something… something that they couldn’t get anywhere else, but now the question was what. He could ponder hypotheticals all day really, but in the end it would get him nowhere… it was such an open-ended question, and it was one that may end up being wrong as well. His best bet was to start working on tracking them down, and he knew exactly where to start that mission. Those within Sunagakure’s walls knew of this group, he had been hired in here after-all… and he would eat one of his sandals if that group didn’t have a couple of people in here as well, watching to see if any force was mobilised against them. A foolish idea really, since a single well-trained shinobi could decimate even the most well trained force of bandits, but it was still something he knew was more than likely.
He started in the bars, his sharp eyes allowing him to keep an eye on the entire room without anyone being the wiser, all the while he slowly nursed a bottle of ‘whiskey’ that he purchased loudly and angrily at the counter. In reality, whilst making his way towards the corner of the bar he had stored the real bottle of whiskey within his Storage Displacement and retrieved an identical bottle filled with apple and peach juice, a combination that had a near perfect match to the colour of the whiskey. As he ‘drank himself silly’ he watched the bar, his Byakugan active with nobody the wiser. He repeated this process across 4 bars with 3 different faces, a process that took him hours, but in the end it was well worth it… he had learned quite a bit. In the fourth bar he had recognised somebody… that damned idiot smuggler that he ran across on the road to Sunagakure, the portly and squat man drinking with a much more notable figure. Someone that just looked experienced, everyone knew the type, older man with greying hair and scarred face, no nonsense look about him… and someone that you could just tell was dangerous.
He watched the duo exchange hushed words, with the terrible smuggler looking quite uneasy when some threats were made… but he saw what he needed to, and when the grizzled man left Shin began to look for his opportunity. He wasn’t about to tangle with him… no, it would be much simpler to get the information he needed from the drunk and cowardly smuggler.
He would get up and stumble for good measure, taking a few moments to blink blearily, before pushing his way through the crowd and to the table that the smuggler sat at, clearly drunk as well and having no intention of stopping until he was truly blacked out.
“It’s you… you’re that smuggler I saw on the road here! How are you man? Did you deliver your package without any trouble?” The deep voice of the assassin would ask, causing the bleary eyes of the man to focus on him for a few moments before his eyes widened, realising that it was he that was being spoken to, and no doubt recognising Shin.
“Oh, it’s you… yea, no issues. Thanks for not rattin me out there, boss woulda had my hide if I failed again.” The rotund man would say, obviously a little more willing to speak due to the alcohol in his system, something that Shin was playing on. The following conversation would take place over the course of two hours, with Shin getting the man steadily more plastered with free drinks between them.
“Glad to hear it, didn’t figure I’d be seeing you here in Suna after that one”
“HA! If I had a choice I wouldn’t be here that’s for sure… this place is dangerous.”
“Then why stay?”
“Heh… boss needs someone that can stay unnoticed to keep an eye on the shinobi here… and I’m good at keeping unnoticed, people usually don’t pay much attention to me… too unassuming.”
“Interesting… why do you need to keep an eye on the shinobi? Your boss doing something that would piss em off?”
“Nah, he’s not an idiot, he’s got a band set up out in the Demon Desert, tracking some idiot that’s hiding out there.”
“Mercenaries? Now that is interesting, why not simply tell the shinobi and avoid the trouble?”
“THAT’S WHAT I SAID!?? But noooo, I’m jus’ an idiot… he wants ta get in and out as quick as he can, and doesn’ wan’ risk the shinobi takin’ the job from him and catchin’ the idiot first… very nice price on his head.”
And with that, Shin had what he needed, so he would leave his new friend a gift in the form of the whiskey he purchased earlier. The squat man thanked him profusely and introduced himself for the first time, Peter something… was kinda had to tell what the last name was since the man was slurring so heavily. He would bid the man farewell and leave, smirking to himself at how well he had done… he gathered all the information he needed, and in the process removed the one person that may be able to identify him. Peter hadn’t been a bad person, just caught in a bad situation with his boss… but really, Shin hadn’t cared, he couldn’t risk the man identifying him to his boss in the future, as unlikely as that was… so he had spiked the whiskey he gave the man. It would be next to impossible to tell the man died of anything other than Alcohol poisoning, but really, he didn’t care if anyone figured out something was amiss… there was, quite literally, no way this could be traced back to him, and he knew it. Besides, this job was helping Suna maintain control of the area, and he was sure if he explained the situation to Mizuki she would understand… or at least, he hoped she would. Last thing he needed was those claws in his throat.
Later in the night Shin would depart from Suna, following his map and heading off in the direction of The Demon Desert, possibly the most dangerous part of Wind Country, but with his Byakugan he knew he’d be fine. His goal? To kill the leader of this Mercenary band, and his mark. In his conversation with Peter he had learned that his leader, supposedly some werewolf that went only by Greyback, was the only thing keeping the group from splintering. Greyback was the same man that he had seen Peter talking to earlier in the night, so he had a face to hunt for… and considering the man was a werewolf, Shin was taking care to be extra cautious. He had heard tell of the great beasts before, and he didn’t want to take the risk of being infected by the virus… whether those tales were folklore or not he didn’t care, he wouldn’t take the risk of becoming some out of control mutt.
His Byakugan and the still sand made tracking the rogue beast easy, and his Scent Masking Technique was enough to hide him from the untransformed beast… with the combination of the dark night, his Byakugan, and his stealth, getting the drop on the man was easy. The man was far more powerful than him, that was clear, but really… he was at quite the disadvantage after driving a poisoned kunai directly into the side of his neck. The man was bleeding profusely, AND was fighting the poison… he simply had to rely on his speed and stealth to outlast the man, and outlast him he did. Heh, and that was the perfect example of why he never fought fair… he would have lost that fight quite handily were it not for his preparations. From there he simply needed to track down the prey that the group was after, something made far easier by his Byakugan, and within an hour or so he had the man unconscious and on his shoulder as he made his way back towards Sunagakure. He had no clue who the man was, but according to Peter there was a nice price on his head, and he figure that a little ‘gift’ like this would help ingratiate himself to Mizuki and the higher ups of Suna, something that would likely help him out quite a bit during his time here.
It was quite the amusing tale to tell the gate guard, but he was thanked for his service and assured that Mizuki would hear of it… something he didn’t really believe, and would be taking care of himself when he met with her in The Spire. But for now, he needed to go and meet up with his contact, and get himself paid for this job. The man was quite disbelieving at how quickly Shin had taken care of the issue, but after an hour or so of waiting while he verified he was thanked profusely and paid very generously. Shin could barely keep the feral grin from his face as he counted the money… it was just as much as his last four jobs combined, and was far more fun to actually complete. It was the most fun he’d had on a job in quite awhile, and he got the feeling that this was only the beginning of the fun he would be having within the walls of Sunagakure.
