The Dual Rank System
Table of Contents
The dual ranking system in NRPG introduces a dynamic and flexible approach to character development within this AU Naruto universe. It allows players to shape their characters uniquely by distinguishing between the In-Character Rank (IC Rank) and the Power Rank. Players can tailor their roleplaying journey to suit their preferences. Some may focus on advancing their character through the Naruto world's official ranks and political structures, while others prioritize refining their character's skills and powers. This system accommodates diverse approaches to character growth and encourages dynamic interactions and a broad range of storytelling possibilities in NRPG.
In-Character Rank(IC Rank)
The In Character (IC) Rank system mirrors a character's status within their village or organization in the Naruto world, earned through in-character actions like mission success, tournament victories, and political maneuvering. Progression brings privileges, responsibilities, and recognition, starting as Genin and advancing to prestigious positions such as Anbu or Kage through role-playing achievements.
Kages wield authority over ranks, shaping their village's advancement path. The standards they set become law, determining the unique tests and challenges individuals face on their journey through the shinobi hierarchy. While each village may assign distinct responsibilities and unlisted ranks, there's a general outline of expectations and universal perks for each rank.
Academy Student [Possible Starting Rank]
The Academy Student marks the initial stage of a character's ninja journey, symbolizing the commencement of their aspirations. At this stage, individuals focus on learning the fundamentals of the shinobi arts, including jutsu, weapons mastery, and basic strategies. While their influence on the military structure is minimal, Academy Students are dedicated learners, attending classes, analyzing lessons, and ensuring sufficient rest.
These characters display enthusiasm and potential daily but are viewed as citizens rather than active ninja force members. The role of an Academy Student provides the foundation for growth, offering opportunities to progress through the ranks and develop formidable skills. By dedicating themselves to hard work and perseverance, they can become skilled ninjas, capable of defending their village and confronting greater challenges.
Stipend: 250 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay].
Mission Permissions: Academy students can only do E-rank Missions and the Genin Exam [D-rank] when they are ready to rank up.
Rank-Up Rewards: No rank-up reward at this is the lowest possible rank.
Genin
After successfully passing the Genin Exam, individuals ascend to the rank of Genin in their hidden village. As the lowest military rank, Genin undertake low-level missions and engage in skill improvement and acclimation to the shinobi lifestyle. Daily life involves completing tasks, training, and interacting primarily with other Genin.
To qualify for the Genin Exam, candidates need 100 stats and proficiency in Transformation and Clone Jutsu. This milestone marks their official entry into the world of ninjas, opening doors for future growth and advancement. As Genin gain experience, they have the potential to ascend through the ranks and become influential members of their village's shinobi forces.
Note A proctor is any rank higher than genin. Usually done by village shinobi, but if they have express permissions for the Kage, a village shinobi from another village may perform these exams.
Stipend: 500 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay].
Rank Up Rewards: A Shinobi Headband is received upon first reaching this rank.
Chunin
Upon successfully passing advanced exams or achieving extraordinary feats, a Genin ascends to the esteemed rank of Chunin. As the backbone of a hidden village's military force, Chunin take on critical and sensitive missions, including guarding assets, escorting VIPs, and managing immigration processes. They also lead teams of Genin, guiding the next generation of shinobi.
Chunin hold a higher level of influence, commanding respect and obedience from those below them. Their counsel and expertise become valuable in the hierarchical chain, especially with exceptional skills and experience. Rising in rank and fame, Chunin become well-known within their village and the surrounding lands, attracting attention and challenges from crime lords and adversaries. Hidden villages place bounties on Chunin heads to protect their assets, with a standing bounty of 30,000 Ryo reflecting the increased risks and responsibilities.
Stipend: 1000 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Chunin, due to their higher rank, receive an extra 2000 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 10,000 Ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank. Flak Jacket is received the first time a character reaches this rank.
Tokubetsu Jounin
Tokubetsu Jounin, a rank between Chunin and Jounin, signifies accomplished and specialized individuals within the ninja hierarchy. These shinobi have demonstrated expertise in specific fields, whether it be a particular jutsu, combat strategy, or tactical skill. While Tokubetsu Jounin may not hold the same authority as Jounin, their contributions and specialized skills make them indispensable assets to their village.
Becoming a Tokubetsu Jounin involves showcasing exceptional proficiency and obtaining specialized knowledge. This rank offers a middle ground between the responsibilities of a Chunin and the leadership roles held by Jounin. Tokubetsu Jounin may lead specialized teams, contribute valuable insights, or take charge of missions aligning with their expertise. 50,000 Ryo is the bounty on this rank.
Stipend: 1,500 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Tokubetsu Jounin, due to their rank, receives an extra 3,000 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 20,000 Ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank.
Jounin
A Jounin, a position achieved by only the most accomplished Chunin or Toku Jounin, holds a prestigious and influential role within the hidden village hierarchy. As a respected leader and expert, Jounin excels in combat, intelligence, and political acumen. Their responsibilities include high-level strategy development, mission planning, leading teams on critical missions, and training and developing lower-level shinobi.
In times of crisis, Jounin step up to lead the rank-and-file shinobi into battle, and their influence extends to all ranks below them. Highly valued by their peers and the Kage, Jounin plays a crucial role in shaping village policies and military strategies. Their elevated status brings recognition and fame within the village and surrounding lands, making them targets. Crime lords and enemies place bounties on Jounin heads, with a standing bounty of 75,000 Ryo reflecting their threat level.
Stipend: 2000 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Jounin, due to their rank, receives an extra 4000 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 30,000 Ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank.
ANBU
ANBU, the elite force of a hidden village, represents the pinnacle of shinobi excellence. Selected by the Kage, these operatives undergo rigorous training for the prestigious rank. ANBU specializes in espionage, assassinations, and Kage security, operating under code names or masks to conceal their identities and maintain secrecy. Loyalty to the Kage is paramount, and they wield significant influence within the village hierarchy, reporting directly to the Kage.
Despite the cloak of anonymity, ANBU members retain the rank and influence of a Jounin or as assigned by the Kage outside their special operations. Their reputation extends beyond village borders, earning them recognition throughout the lands. However, this notoriety comes at a cost, as crime lords and enemies target them. ANBU operatives face standing bounties of 150,000 Ryo, reflecting their high threat level.
Stipend: 3500 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Due to their rank, Anbu receives an extra 7,500 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 40,000 ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank.
Master | Village Leader | Warden
The Master rank represents the pinnacle of achievement in the ninja world. Masters, highly skilled shinobi/kunoichi, hold prestigious positions like Anbu Commanders, Honored Advisors, or Lords, depending on their village's designations. Renowned for exceptional abilities and leadership, Masters contribute significantly to their village and demonstrate mastery in combat, strategy, or specialized knowledge. Their wisdom guides the next generation of shinobi, and despite standing bounties of 300,000 Ryo, they remain committed to duty, honor, and loyalty.
In contrast, Settlements and Minor Villages have "Village Leaders" who focus on developing and expanding their villages. Only one Village Leader exists at a time. The Warden Rank, equivalent to Master, is unique and associated with assimilated villages. Holders oversee towns incorporated after losing a village warfare topic, showcasing the fluid dynamics of the ninja world.
Stipend: 5000 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Masters, due to their rank, receive an extra 10,000 for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: As part of achieving the rank of Master, the character is granted access to 60,000 Ryo and the village's resources should they be a Village Leader.
Kage
The Kage, the pinnacle of leadership in a hidden village, holds unparalleled authority over governance, security, and military operations. Whether achieved through conquest, election, or other means, a Kage embodies the village's strength and willpower, influencing its destiny. Responsible for policies, strategic decisions, and diplomatic representation, a Kage can declare war, form alliances, and shape the ninja world's balance of power.
A Kage's reputation extends globally, known for wisdom, strength, and leadership. Despite their fame, they become prime targets, evidenced by the substantial 500,000 Ryo bounty on their heads. The role is both an honor and immense responsibility, as Kage safeguards their village, inspire their shinobi, and shape the ninja way of life, leaving an indelible mark on history.
Stipend:Despite their immense responsibilities, Kage might not have much time for personal missions due to their village management duties. Their primary focus is ensuring the village's smooth running and safeguarding its interests. They receive a weekly stipend of 5,000 Ryo, allocated to the village's treasury. Additionally, if they decide to undertake missions personally, they receive a bonus wage of 15,000 Ryo for each mission.
Rank Up Rewards: Access to their village’s treasury.
In-Character Rank Outside the Village System
Here at NRPG, we have a few different 'In-Character Ranks' that fall outside of the Village system; these characters are no longer a part of the villages for one reason or another. You can take two routes, the first being Missing Ninja, as stated below, a criminal of sorts. The other option is a Vagabond, otherwise known as an unaffiliated shinobi. Vagabonds can be from basically former shinobi to bounty hunters. The possibilities are endless.
Missing Ninja
Missing Ninja, or Missing-Nin, represent shinobi who've forsaken their villages, breaking free from the conventional village system. They discard the in-character ranking system of their former village, opting instead for the Power Ranking System, which gauges their strength based on combat skills, abilities, and achievements.
Departing from the norms of regular shinobi, Missing-Nin embrace independence and often engage in criminal activities. They willingly garner notoriety to ascend in rank, following a unique tree that permits unconventional methods to advance. Their path is fraught with risks as traitors to their former village, hunted down as criminals. Severing ties with comrades and losing village support leaves them vulnerable to attacks from shinobi and bounty hunters seeking rewards for their capture. Operating on society's fringes, Missing-Nin strive to survive despite outlaw status. Forming temporary alliances with fellow outlaws or criminal groups, they become targets for justice-seeking shinobi or bounty hunters due to their illegal nature and notoriety.
Though they've left the village system, Missing-Nin remains a formidable fighter and skilled shinobi, possessing powerful jutsu, unique techniques, and extensive combat experience. Some carve paths in the ninja world, while others become mercenaries assassins, or pursue personal vendettas against their former village. The Power Ranking System enables Missing-Nin to advance by showcasing strength in battle, but this criminal path exposes them to being hunted and pursued as fugitives. Despite the risks, they remain determined to shape their destinies and pursue goals free from village constraints.
Special Notes on Missing Ninja
- 1. Due to always being hunted, Missing-Nin cannot make private topics or include thread tags in their topic titles. The only exceptions to this rule are if the Missing-Nin is in a Base of Operations that they own or have been given permission to act within or are in the Social Zone of the Black Market sub-forum.
- 2. Before entering a village, a Missing-Nin must make a topic at the village gates and wait for 48 hours or until someone replies before you are allowed entry. Should 48 hours pass, you can claim entry into the village. However, if you choose to do so, it could get you into trouble with the village.
- 3. Missing-Nin can ignore thread tags and invade topics if they so desire.
- 4. A Base of Operations for missing ninjas is a territory where they are not hunted and may use thread tags (Learn more here). A Base of Operations can also include a village if the Kage of the said village has formally allowed a Missing-Nin to stay there. If formally allowed to stay in a village, a Missing-Nin loses the ability to ignore thread tags.
- 5. E-rank MN can only participate in E-rank missions except when they are to take the next step in their career. Learning The Ropes [D-rank] is the equivalent of a Genin Exam and can only be taken at a Border. This mission can never be invaded.
- 6., Unlike village ninjas, Missing ninjas do not have a single administrative entity to pay them wages. Nevertheless, they also receive a bonus commission for missions completed based on their power rank and infamy. This is their version of the wage that village ninjas receive based on their ranks.
The income is as follows- D-rank: No increase
- C-Rank: +2000 ryo for all missions
- B-Rank: +4000 ryo for all missions
- A-Rank: +7500 ryo for all missions
- S-Rank: +15000 ryo for all missions.
- 7. Missing-Nin, unlike Village-Nin, are not paid for their work with a stipend, but they will gain money weekly through less-than-savory means, depending on their level of notoriety.
Dirty Money- E-Rank 250 Ryo
- D-Rank 500 Ryo
- C-Rank 1000 Ryo
- B-Rank 2000 Ryo
- A-Rank 3500 Ryo
- S-Rank 5000 Ryo
- 8. Missing-Nin are criminals; as such, they have had bounties placed on their heads by various people. The rate for their heads will depend on the rank of the Missing-Nin.
- D-rank: 7,500
- C-rank: 20,000
- B-rank: 50,000
- A-rank: 125,000
- S-rank: 300,000
9. Once a criminal is branded, there is no turning back. They are free to join villages, but their crimes will not be expunged, nor will their bounties be rescinded.
Unaffiliated Shinobi [Vagabonds]
Vagabonds, or Unaffiliated Shinobi, epitomize wandering mercenaries and independent warriors free from the constraints of hidden villages. Unlike traditional shinobi following village ranks, Vagabonds adopt the Power Ranking System, focusing on personal strength rather than village affiliation. Preferring a nomadic lifestyle, Vagabonds reject the structured hierarchy of villages, pursuing freedom and self-determination. They operate autonomously, taking on missions without village restrictions, shaping their destinies independently.
In contrast to Missing-Nin, who is motivated by vengeance or rebellion, Vagabonds embrace adventure and independence. Evaluated by the Power Ranking System, their strength stems from combat prowess, skills, and accomplishments, allowing them to forge a unique path. While facing risks without village protection, Vagabonds relish the challenges, valuing their independence and the ability to shape their destinies. They may form temporary alliances for specific goals but remain free agents, exploring new lands, undertaking missions, and seeking personal growth on their distinctive journeys.
Special Notes on Vagabonds:
- 1. Limited Privileges: Similar to Missing-Nin, Vagabonds cannot make private topics or include thread tags in their topic titles due to the hazardous nature of their existence. The only exception to this rule is if the Vagabond is within a Base of Operations that they own or have permission to act within. This territory provides them with a safe place to operate more freely.
- 2. Entering Villages: Before entering a village, a Vagabond must make a topic at the village gates and wait for 48 hours or until someone replies before they are allowed entry. This waiting period allows the village to respond and potentially deny entry. If 48 hours pass without a response, the Vagabond can claim entry into the village. However, doing so without permission could lead to trouble with the village authorities.
- 3. Base of Operations: Vagabonds can establish a Base of Operations, a territory where they can feel safe and use thread tags. This provides them a secure area to operate from and plan their activities. A Base of Operations may include a hidden location, a secret hideout, or even a village if the Kage of that village has formally allowed the Vagabonds to stay there.
- 4. Similar to Missing-Nin, Vagabonds do not have a centralized system for payment like village ninjas. However, they receive a bonus commission for missions completed based on their power rank and fame. This bonus commission reflects their reputation and accomplishments as skilled wanderers. The amount of bonus commission increases with higher ranks, as follows:
The income is as follows- D-rank: No increase
- C-Rank: +2000 ryo for all missions
- B-Rank: +4000 ryo for all missions
- A-Rank: +7500 ryo for all missions
- S-Rank: +15000 ryo for all missions.
- 5. Gift of Charity: Vagabonds, unlike Village-Nin and Missing-Nin, are not paid for their work with a stipend, nor do they gain their money by less than savory means. Instead, they rely on the goodwill of others who mistake their vagabond status for homelessness. Wealthier individuals give them money from charity, which Vagabonds can claim as the "Gift of Charity." The amount they receive depends on their rank, and they can claim it every Friday on their stat pages.
Gift of Charity- E-Rank 250 Ryo
- D-Rank 500 Ryo
- C-Rank 1000 Ryo
- B-Rank 2000 Ryo
- A-Rank 3500 Ryo
- S-Rank 5000 Ryo
- 6. Consequences of Criminal Acts: Vagabonds must be careful not to engage in certain criminal activities that could lead to severe consequences. If a Vagabond steals from a character that is not a Missing-Nin or attacks/kills a Village-Nin/Vagabond without being attacked first, they will be branded as a Missing-Nin. Once branded, there is no way for them to return to being a Vagabond.
- 7. Mission Participation: Similar to Missing-Nin, E-rank Vagabonds can only participate in E-rank missions except when they will take the next step in their career. " Learning The Ropes" (D-rank) is the equivalent of a Genin Exam for Village Ninja and can only be taken at a border. This mission cannot be invaded.
- 8. Bounty on Vagabonds: Vagabonds have made enemies due to their disruptive nature, and as a result, there are bounties placed on their heads. The rate for their heads varies based on their rank, with higher-ranked Vagabonds having higher bounties:
- D-rank: 7,500
- C-rank: 20,000
- B-rank: 50,000
- A-rank: 125,000
- S-rank: 300,000
Power Ranks
The Power Rank is a gauge for a character's strength, skills, and potential within NRPG, indicating the scope of their abilities. Unlike IC Rank, tied to Naruto's world, Power Rank is an abstract measure of a character's capabilities. Advancing in Power Rank unlocks specialties, elements, and techniques, enhancing versatility and combat prowess. IC Rank doesn't restrict this rank, allowing players to focus on improving abilities without actively pursuing higher village positions.
Once earned through specified requirements, a Power Rank is retained unless the character dies. Replacement characters begin one Power Rank below the character they replace [Refer to Character Death and Replacement Rules].
A few universal rewards are gained upon each rank-up. The first is +100 bonus AP for every power rank gained, and the second is +20 stats for each power rank gained (If you max stats, you may take +50 AP instead of the stats).
Six Important Notes
- 1. Power rank must be earned in the sequence that follows (E->D->C->B->A->S). One cannot normally skip ranks, with the only real exceptions to this being if the character in question manages to kill an enemy shinobi of a much higher rank, in which case they will gain the rank of the character they managed to kill.
- 2. Power rank is, generally speaking, not something that is discussed or known In-Character. For the most part, it serves as a system to balance the mechanical aspects of our site.
- 3. Missions used to fulfill one power rank’s requirements cannot fulfill another power rank requirement later on. The same concept holds for the missing-ninja-exclusive options; the ryo stolen to fulfill one power rank's requirement does not stack with another.
- 4. To prevent everyone from having everything and signify the power gap between power ranks, each rank has a jutsu cap. A jutsu cap is the maximum number of jutsu you may train of a certain rank/type. You may not train if a certain rank/type of jutsu is not listed. In this case, type refers to whether the jutsu is a ‘custom’ or ‘canon.’ Check out the Jutsu rules to learn about what canon and custom jutsu are.
- 5. When ranking up via mission, three potential paths may be undertaken (although certain paths will be locked once you have reached certain ranks), Low Stakes, Standard, and High Stakes.
The Low Stakes route is the safest but longest path, resulting in a character needing to take quite a few more missions before they can rank up while completely skipping the need for Hunter Missions. The Low Stakes route may only be used up to a maximum B-rank.
The Standard Path is the middle ground and the route the staff team recommends people take to gain some experience in combat on the board. This path consists of a mixture of standard missions and Hunter Missions.
The High Stakes path entirely skips the standard missions and allows you to undertake a single Hunter Mission to rank up. This Hunter Mission must be of a rank higher than the character's undertaking and must be done alone. If the character wins this Hunter Mission, they will gain the rank of the killed NPC.
Note: If Mission/Hunter Skip tickets from events are used, they will only be able to skip Standard Path missions
