Kenchi assessed Ashborn with a discerning eye, recognizing him as a member of Tsukiakari's elite—a stark contrast to his background. Despite this, Kenchi brushed it off, confident in his worth. Though familiar with discrimination due to his status, Ashborn showed no signs of prejudice, which put Kenchi at ease. He remained focused on creating a legendary legacy and making a mark worthy of history. Subtle jabs and mockery were manageable; pity, however, was not.
He nodded at Ashborn’s observations, allowing a subtle smile to touch his lips. “You’ve got a keen eye,” Kenchi said with amusement. “The Southern Rocks have a way of marking their own.”
Extending his rough, callused hand, he firmly grasped Ashborn’s grip. “Well met, Ashborn. It’s good to find a fellow Genin here. We’ve both traveled quite a distance to be in this village. Let’s hope the journey proves worthwhile.”
As Kenchi spoke, his thoughts lingered on the exchange. Ashborn’s calm demeanor and confident presence suggested he was no ordinary Genin. The ease with which Yamaguchi carried himself, the peaceful confidence in his demeanor, the jutsu expertise, and his lack of visible reaction to the others earlier all hinted at something more. If Ashborn were indeed just a Genin, Kenchi was Stein of Konoha.
With a relaxed yet alert posture, Kenchi released the handshake and stepped back. “I’ve heard plenty about Hoshigakure’s shinobi. If both of you are any indication, I’d say I’m in good company. ”
Kenchi watched Tsunayoshi’s departure with a mix of awe and skepticism, raising an eyebrow at the dramatic display. The swirling vortex and golden light were impressive, but Kenchi couldn't help but smirk at the flair. The invitation to the Dojo Yard was noted as a promising opportunity rather than a mere gesture.
"Until then, I’ll likely take you up on the offer and make my way to the Dojo Yard soon." Turning to Ashborn, Kenchi nodded, “And I look forward to crossing paths with you again soon. Take care.”
As Kenchi prepared to leave, the rhythmic clanking of armor signaled the arrival of pikemen and men-at-arms to the gate. They resumed their posts with disciplined precision, restoring a sense of normalcy to the scene. Kenchi gave them a respectful nod as he passed, acknowledging their commitment. With a purposeful stride, he headed inside the city walls, feeling the weight of the moment and the excitement of new beginnings. Hoshigakure awaited a place where he hoped to hone his skills and forge a legacy.

Ashborn observed Kenchi with a thoughtful gaze, his appreciation evident. “You’ve got a strong sense of self and a drive to make your mark. Those qualities will surely serve you well in this village and beyond.”
He then nodded toward Tsunayoshi’s impressive departure and added, a grin playing at his lips, “And Tsunayoshi’s flair for the dramatic seems matched only by his skill. If we’re to meet such standards, we’re in for quite an exciting journey.” Turning his focus back to Kenchi, Ashborn concluded, “Safe travels and best of luck with your endeavors. I look forward to crossing paths again soon.” He omitted any mention of being sealed into one of his corpse storage scrolls, keeping the tone light.
As the pikemen and men-at-arms took their posts, their disciplined movements reminded Ashborn of the once prominent order of Queensmen that governed Hoshigakure. He flicked a cigarette from its pack and lit it with a practiced hand, the brief glow of the match illuminating his face. Inhaling deeply, he watched the clouds drift lazily across the sky, their slow movement mirroring the rare moments of introspection he allowed himself.
As the smoke swirled around him, Ashborn’s thoughts drifted to the duality of his role. His duties as a cleaner and corpse collector involved confronting the grim reality of death—harvesting bodies and repurposing them as weapons, a chilling legacy of his clan. Although this task was a necessary evil, it contrasted sharply with the quiet contemplation he now enjoyed. Each encounter, whether grim or tranquil, added depth to his understanding of duty and purpose. Despite the darkness of his role, he sought to reconcile his clan’s legacy with his evolving sense of self.
“Every breath of smoke and every trace of blood tells a story; it’s up to us to write the ending.”
Ashborn had first encountered this passage through Lady Ootsu, his grandmother, who had not only passed down her bloodline limit but also her wisdom and her smoking habits. Although he preferred cigarettes to her old-fashioned pipe, her teachings left a lasting impression on him. The passage was a reflection of her insight into the duality of life and duty, resonating deeply with Ashborn’s own experiences and moments of introspection.
