Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:45 pm
Navi had recently invited a Genin he had met earlier to the training grounds to come and meet him. He had met other friends through sparring, and it was good combat practice as a break from training. He stood leaning against an old tree as the wind blew through the field.

Navi wore a leaf headband tied tightly around his forehead. He had a ninjato sword (in its sheath) strapped to his back and a couple kunai in the pouch he had attatched to his thigh.

Navi eagerly awaited the arrival of his new opponent and comrade of the leaf village.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Umtari stalked into the area looking distinctly uneasy and unusual. He was dressed in his full camouflage gear and was decked out in webbing with various pouches for holding items and equipment, though many of these pouches seemed oddly empty. Most distinctly he was holding his pride and joy, his crossbow. He had debated bringing it to this meeting, it had taken him years to build but without it he was utterly helpless, he had not yet had the time or money to develop many alternative strategies. He was also uneasy because today promised to be a stand up fight, Umtari avoided those like the plague. He was much more the sort of man to shoot you in the back from several hundred feet away and then run off. What he was now entering was truly alien territory, but at least he had an ally to do that with. After all, if he could not rely on a fellow leaf ninja to act with restraint then who could he trust?

Taking a few moments to observe his surroundings, in particular checking the area for traps, Umtari moved over towards Navi with a smile and stretched out a hand.

“Good to see you again.” His hard face, locked in a semi-permanent frown seemed to soften slightly like he was trying to make a good impression but did not quite know how. “Our previous meeting seemed so brief. So, what do you have planned for us?” He asked, just for the information though he had a sneaky suspicion that he knew what the answer was.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Navi didn't get a good look at the Genin as he approached him until he got much closer. He carried a handcrafted and powerful looking crossbow and as he came face to face he stuck out his hand. “Good to see you again.”

"You too, Umtari was it?" Navi shook his hand and relaxed his body.

“Our previous meeting seemed so brief. So, what do you have planned for us?” Navi smiled as Umtari asked the question. "An open spar, I found the best way to learn about someone is too fight them." Navi took a deep breath and his voice took a serious but friendly tone. "As long as no killing or permanent damage is done anything goes." The breeze continued to get stronger as Navi stepped into the center of the field.

Navi struck a combat stance, his palm outstretched and fist held close to his body. He began to analyze his opponent. Umtari seemed like he would be vastly outmatched in this spar. He held a powerful crossbow and wore camouflage which struck Navi as the long range assassin type. In an open battle would he have any tricks up his sleeve? If I can keep this fight short ranged I will immediately take the advantage.

Navi formed a handsign* and rushed forward with blinding speed, aiming a powerful fist for Umtari's chest and two kicks for his neck.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Mon Jul 30, 2012 7:30 am
“Yes, yes. Umtari. You’re Navi Uchiha as I recall.” His opponent’s name alone was enough to cause caution. After having his hand shaken and the day’s events explained to him Umtari began to walk backwards away from Navi, he was doing so quite casually, heading towards what seemed like a fair opening distance between the two. As he did so Umtari took the opportunity to add a little something to the rules lain down by Navi.

“This crossbow is a tough old thing, she can stand up to some punishment. But it took me years to design and construct. If you want to render it useless as part of the fight do something like cut the steel draw string or something that I can readily repair after the fight. If you destroy this thing I might have to kill you for real.” He laughed slightly, to hint he might be exaggerating about that last point, but it was clear he was quite serious about the overarching message.

He also took the opportunity to look over his opponent, his gear seemed quite standard and unremarkable aside from the sword. It seemed this man was the exact opposite of Umtari, he liked to get up close, if Umtari was to stand any chance today he needed to keep some distance between him and his opponent. Glancing about him he instantly got a few ideas about how to do it. It was less than ideal but it would have to do.

Readying himself the fight began. Navi came on fast, Umtari might have been able to hit him but he did not want to take the risk, if he missed then Umtari was done for and this would be a humiliatingly short spar. Instead Umtari had to run. Had Umtari had more time to work on his speed he might have been able to side step what was coming at him but for now that was not an option. Letting his crossbow hang off of him Umtari preformed a number of hand seals and was gone, only to be replaced by a log at the moment Navi’s blows landed.

Umtari meanwhile was now squatting in a tree quite some distance away, hidden amongst the foliage. He had not been so silly as to pick a lone tree, no he was in a decent sized gaggle of the things, there were a few such arrangements hanging about. So long as Umtari had been successful in this escape attempt he would seem to vanish, not just from sight but also his chakra would just seem gone, as if he were a million miles away. The whole point of this exercise was to disguise his current location. Concealing his chakra was the work of a moment and left him free to launch his counter attack. Bracing his weapon Umtari took aim at Navi who was currently roughly 150 feet away. Umtari could have put a shot on him pretty much anywhere but the torso and head were right out. Umtari’s bolts hit hard and could penetrate most conventional armour as such bones, internal organs, spinal columns, they would pose little resistance. Umtari did not want to kill this man so he aimed at an area unlikely to cause lasting damage, his upper left leg. If the bolt hit it would likely immobilise the man and generally cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Worst case scenario it shattered the bone and cut an artery but Umtari was confident he could stem the bleeding long enough to get him to hospital, where the medical nin could restore him to full working order. Either way Navi would live and so Umtari pulled the trigger and the bolt whisked swiftly out of the trees. Of course Umtari would have adjusted his aim depending on where Navi was but if, at the time of firing, Navi was still standing where Umtari had been the man would find the bolt approaching him from his 7 o’clock.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

"Uchiha through name, not by blood. I was taken in and raised by them, but I am not a true member of their clan." Navi agreed that no real damage would befall the crossbow and the fight began.

Substitution he thought to himself as his powerful blows struck the log that replaced him. A counterattack would come next, Umtari had put distance between them and would be hiding in a tree or in a bush somewhere. Next would come the bolt from some direction and he needed to be ready. He performed the handsigns an instant before the bolt struck his left leg and instantly appeared in a nearby tree. A log clunked to the ground in his place with a powerful bolt sticking out of its side. Based on the trajectory and where the bolt is sticking out, I would guess he is between 100 and 200 feet in that direction. Navi roughly pinpointed
Umtari's position and ran forward, utilizing his incredible speed.

Navi attempted to conceal himself, but Umtari would see him when he got close enough. To prevent getting picked off, Navi created two clones that ran forward and acted as meat shields.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Tue Jul 31, 2012 4:34 pm
“Humm, two people really can play at that game.” Umtari thought silently in his head as he saw Navi vanish into a log just as Umtari had done a few moments ago. Unlike Umtari though the man did not seem to be hiding upon his reappearance. Navi had been clever and able to trace the shot back to Umtari’s rough location and he was closing in as best he could. Umtari was a good shot and he was confident that so long as Navi did not do anything particularly tricky to evade his follow up shot then he would be able to hit the man, despites his immense speed. The problem was though Navi would almost certainly be guileful.

This was confirmed by the fact that not just one Navi but seemingly three were pushing in Umatri’s general direction. This was of course impossible and at least two were clones or illusions of some kind. Umtari knew how to do this himself and such he knew the weaknesses. He knew that simple clones cast no shadows and would not flatten grass or disturb the earth as they ran. From his concealed vantage point, and considering the distance between the two combatants, Umtari had plenty of time to identify the real Navi and take aim. But he did not fire, not yet anyway. Navi had proven capable of dodging shots fired at his back, he would almost certainly be able to evade shots fired at his front and it would give him an even better idea of where Umtari was hiding.

Instead Umtari concentrated for a moment and used the Temporary Paralysis Technique, if successful this would pin Navi to the spot, rendering him incapable of moving his arms, legs, hands or even his head. The effect would only last a short while but Umtari needed only a second. After preforming the technique he would fire his bolt at the now hopefully immobile Navi, aiming this time for his upper right leg. If this did not work however, he would need to beat a retreat and fast.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Navi immediately stopped his charge and dashed behind a tree panting heavily. He recognized that technique in the academy as a paralysis jutsu. He dispelled his clones and began thinking quickly. There was still a distance between him and Umtari. Navi wouldn't be able to charge head on, not with his ability to paralyze him. Even if he got caught by that jutsu for a second, it would give Umtari the means to end the fight with his powerful crossbow.

Navi knew his opponents exact location, the tree he was in provided an excellent vantage point. If he poked out of cover for more then a few seconds he would be struck by a paralysis jutsu, or even a bolt from that crossbow.

Navi drew a kunai from his pouch and wrapped his ninja wire around it, attaching the wire from the loop at the end of the kunai, to his finger. This would allow him to control the path of the kunai mid-flight. In an instant Navi threw the kunai from behind cover and it embedded itself deep into the trunk of the tree Umtari was standing in. There was now a thin (and almost impossible to break) wire leading from his position to Umtari's vantage point.

Now lets get you out of hiding. Navi focused his chakra and performed a series of hand seals. "KATON: RYUKA NO JUTSU!". He held his lips to the wire and spit flame down the path he created. The wire acted as a conductor for his fire jutsu. The flame raced down the wire and exploded in a brilliant plume of fire. Umtari's tree would be engulfed in flames, and the trees around it would quickly catch on fire. Navi yanked his kunai back to his hand and rushed forward. Because his fire jutsu was burning trees, there was a massive cloud of smoke forming around Umtari's position. Navi used the cover of smoke to rush forward without fear of being hit with any jutsu or crossbow bolts.

This is my chance to make this a close range fight.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Tue Jul 31, 2012 5:44 pm
How had he done it, how had Navi escaped that jutsu, Umtari was hidden how did he know it was coming? Never mind, that was a question for after the battle, for now Umtari cursed his luck and his lack of options but was determined to go on. After all, whilst retreat was in his nature outright surrender was not. For a short while Umtari believed he still had the upper hand, his opponent was pinned behind a tree and unable to escape, all he had to do was sit here and wait for his opponent’s patience to break first. This however, turned out not to be the case. When the kunai flew from behind the tree and arced in mid-air Umtari smiled to himself. “Clever boy.” He thought, Umtari could always respect smarts even when it came from an opponent. It was a method similar to one Umtari himself had been hoping to learn for his bolts, but alas he had not had the time. Not having the time was proving to be a repeating theme in this fight.

The kunai seemed to be of little danger in itself, it landed away from Umtari and did not have an explosive tag or anything of that nature attached to it, the wire though made Umtari nervous, what was it for? Umtari decided he did not like it and wanted to get rid of it before it’s sinister purpose was revealed. He recognised the wire, that stuff was tough and Umtari had no time to undo the knot. Taking a gamble that the wire itself was not electrified, presently it did not hum or seem to ooze chakra, he grabbed the kunai itself and ripped it out of the tree before Navi started sending flame jetting down it. Umtari did not even attempt to break the wire. He did not casually toss it away though, Umtari could throw a kunai as well as the next man and so threw it at the tree Navi was behind, hoping any trap would backfire if indeed there was a trap.

So long as Navi did not twig what was going on the kunai would imbed itself in his tree at roughly the moment he began to ignite the wire. If this happened Umtari could safely continue squatting in his own tree, waiting for Navi to be flushed out by his own technique, otherwise he would just have to react to whatever Navi did in reaction to Umtari displacing and throwing the kunai back.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Navi had charged forward unnecessarily, while his technique had set many of the trees on fire, Umtari must have thrown his kunai somewhere else, possibly even close to him, because his target wasn't engulfed in flames. Navi hid deep in the trees and switched his position altogether.
Umtari had somehow sabotaged his technique, although it would still suit its purpose. The trees were catching on fire, and as the fire spread it would eventually root Umtari out. Navi hid deep in the trees, away from Umtari and away from the spreading flame.

Navi watched the clearing and waited, Umtari would eventually be forced out by the flames as they spread from tree to tree. This phase of the fight was going to come down to patience. He concealed himself and waited for the moment to strike.

Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill) Empty Re: Two Genin Sparring in the Leaves.(Private/No Kill)

Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:07 pm
Smoke and flames threatened Umtari now, but due to his actions Umtari had a lot more leeway, previously he would have been forced out of the tree near immediately but as things stood he could squat here for a little longer. For now the smoke was not a vast problem, it would take a fair few seconds before it reduced visibility to unworkable levels and a little while longer until it affected breathing, especially since this area was open to the air. Taking advantage of this moment of relative clarity Umtari swiftly noted various important pieces of cover that he may be able to move to, just in case he was no longer able to lay eyes on them when he was forced to move.

The smoke made details a little difficult to work out, but people could still be spotted readily enough. Umtari decided to take advantage of this and try to flush Navi out. Umtari knew Navi had come no closer and the man had presumably moved away from the fire, this left a limited number of places he could be. Umtari, after preforming a few hand seals, created a single clone of himself. It was a standard clone, nothing special about it. Umtari then created a rustle in the bushes like a man leaving. At this moment his clone would leap to the ground and make a bid for freedom, moving from cover to cover like a real man would but he would take a path that meant Navi would have to pop out from cover to take a shot, advance or lay eyes on the target. The beauty of the plan was that the smoke would make little details like shadow and the fact the grass was not being flattened hard to spot. This increased the likelihood, in Umtari’s mind, of Navi buying the deception. Umtari himself meanwhile had stayed in visual cover and moved to a slightly different branch of the same tree, still waiting for his opponent to move.
