Umtari was not traditionally a man to be concerned with the welfare of animals, to him they were food or beasts of burden, no more than slaves really in fact they were less. He could see how a man may get emotionally attached to a creature to be sure and when that creature was harmed action could be brought under property laws, but for things such as animal fighting, where the owners wilfully threw their animals in harm’s way, he saw no reason to outlaw such activity.
Still though, the law disagreed with Umtari and Umtari would follow the law, more importantly there was a mission to investigate a suspected animal fighting ring and a reward for doing so, Umtari would not turn this down. Animals were never that hard to find, not for Umtari anyway. He could smell them, follow tracks, recognise their faeces, the works. True a village complicated matters, confused trails but what could really throw Umtari for a loop was the market, where animals were bought and sold and other were used to lug the loads around. If an animal trail passed through there Umtari could kiss it good bye. Unfortunatly for him it did, so he had to resort to another method.
Umtari reasoned the fights would likely happen at night, fights in the day would be too easily detectable. So squatting on a roof top in the middle of the night he watched and listened for suspicious activity. People were moving around as normal but Umtari was on the lookout for men with noisy or smelly boxes, all drifting towards one place. It took a while, because the owners were using round about routs, but Umtari eventually caught the pattern and followed the men to the building in question.
The building seemed to be no more than an ordinary, run of the mill, house there was no realistic way in which the fights could be happening in there if all was as it seemed on the outside. Deciding not to trust outward appearances Umtari continued his investigation. Waiting until there was a lull in people entering the building Umtari used his chakra suppression technique and then advanced to the building, staying away from the door and instead going around the sides, looking for a window. When eventually he found one Umtari slid the window open and dropped in, like a cat. He had arrived in some sort of pantry or supply room, stacked high with food. Finding nothing of interest Umtari kept on moving until he was looking in to some sort of a corridor. From here he could see where the people were going. Under a rug in the hall lay a concealed hatchway, which presumably led into a basement where the fights were occurring. There were however, far too many people for Umtari to do anything now and go undetected so he slinked away to return later.
The next day Umtari returned around lunchtime, when the fighters would all be away and the house would ideally be abandoned or at least have very few people inside of it. Gaining entrance by the same method as he had last time Umtari made his way to the hatch and proceeded into the basement without incident. There was no doubt about it, the fights were clearly being held here. It was a long way down, to muffle the noise, but eventually the stairs opened up into a large room, larger than the house on the surface. In the middle was a pit surrounded by chicken wire and around it were benches stacked up like tiers of seats. In the bottom of the pit stains of blood and tattered scraps of fur and feathers littered the ground. Umtari could have reported this immediately but he decided to go the extra mile and try to identify as many attendees as possible, particularly the men running the event and collecting money.
In order to achieve this Umtari hid up in a darkened corner of the rafters, where he got extremely familiar with the local spiders. Here he lay motionless for hours until the crowd started to appear, some bearing animals. Thankfully a near universal rule of human behaviour is people do not look up, certainly not when they are relaxed. As such he was able to stay hidden in the dark corner for some time, committing to memory as many faces as he could but paying particular attention to fix in his mind the appearance of the three men who seemed to be running the show and profiting from the gambling of others. Umtari would continue to wait until the area had been abandoned once more before slipping away and reporting the results of his investigation to the kage’s office.
