Umtari did not hang about to moralise or think over his reasons for accepting this task, the money was allays nice as was the rank of the mission but for now a man’s life was on the line and it could go at any minute. Proceeding with all speed to the cliff in question Umtari then slowed and stopped so he was standing off to the side of the suicidal man, far enough away not to cause him alarm. The suicidal man saw Umtari and immediately said.
“Don’t come any closer, come any closer and I’ll jump!”
Deciding to take the suicidal man at his word Umtari just stood off for a while and instead tried to engage the man in conversation.
“My name is Umtari, I’m just here to talk. What’s your name?”
The man seemed hesitant to reply but eventually answered. “Yoshiro.” Before hastily adding. “It will do you no good you know. There isn’t anything you can say which will dissuade me from this!”
Despite the man’s protests Umtari now knew he had an in, he did not need to stop the man jumping, he just needed to break his concentration for a while and hopefully get him to take just a step back.
“Why is that Yoshiro? What has happened?” Asked Umtari, an enquiry followed by a deathly silence. When the man’s reply eventually came it was quite small and weak.
“First I lost my job. Owner of the shop retired, new owners were awful, ran it into the ground, it happens. But then I couldn’t find a new one. There was always someone more qualified or the men running the business would refuse to hire anyone even vaguely associated with the disaster at the shop. I crawled down and down the ladder of work but still nothing. My family were getting hungry. My wife starved herself to feed the baby but that was not enough and the baby just would not stop crying, crying for more food. Until it was too weak even for that. Eventually my wife left with the child, I could not blame her for that, the baby was always the most important thing. She went to her mother’s who would only help on the condition she left me behind. My mother in law always hated me, said I wasn’t good enough. Heh, time has proven the old crone right. But she has gone a step beyond. Already the twisted hag is trying to pair my wife off with some other man and this new lad will get the two things I worked the hardest for. My wife and my child. So go on then Umtari, tell me. Tell me why I should not dive off this cliff right now!”
The situation was tense, made worse by the fact that this man seemed to be sober, he was speaking clearly and he seemed of sound mind. This meant he would be harder to trick but it did mean he was less likely to stumble off the cliff. Embarking on something of a daring gambit Umtari said.
“Look here Yoshiro! Look at me. Your wife and child are still alive. You still have an opportunity to make things right. Look at me and tell me you are willing to give up on them when there is still the slightest chance of success.”
This line angered Yoshiro somewhat, both he and Umtari knew that this slight chance to which Umtari was referring was truly gone. But it got Yoshiro angry with Umtari, not the world and all those orders to look at him had implanted an idea in Yoshiro’s head. Turning angrily towards Umtari the suicidal man barked.
“That’s a lie and you know it, how about you look me in the eye and say you believe all that nonsense you just spewed.”
This was all the opening Umtari needed, using his temporary paralysis jutsu the suicidal man was frozen still, allowing Umtari to advance, pick him up bodily and carry him a safe distance away, into the waiting crowd who would take things from there. Umtari could have done this earlier but with the man so close to the cliff face he was worried that a stiff wind whilst the man was paralysed could have sent him falling into oblivion, but by getting him to turn angrily on Umtari the ninja was satisfied with the size of his margin of error.
With the man delivered into the crowd Umtari made sure there was at least one friend of the man or a doctor who could make sure Yoshiro would be all right and guard against any repeat attempts. That done Umtari stalked away, heading towards the Kage’s office in order to collect his reward but his mind lingered on Yoshiro, he wondered if his efforts had been in anyway worthwhile. After all, if he really did want to die the man would find a way.
