Kei stood in the crowd, watching the woman browsing an artist’s stand. Lately, a lot of paintings had been getting stolen, and his job was to find the culprit. So that was the reason he was standing here, watching a middle aged woman that he was pretty sure he knew from his old days in the village, wearing a name tag that read: “Annabel Lee” browsing an art gallery. The piece she was looking at was of a kingdom by the sea, with a tombstone on top of a hill, overlooking the sea, while angels in heaven fought above. Somehow, he knew that was familiar somehow, that he’d heard something like that in a story before. Maybe he’d been told a story like that as a child it when he was a child, but nevermore would he have the chance to hear that story from his parents. He shrugged, continuing his stakeout, looking back just in time to see a man grab the painting as the woman set it down. Kei sprung into action, following after him inconspicuously. The man walked through the alley, off the beaten path, until he was in a hidden spot. He slid the painting under a pile of crates, before turning to walk back the way he came, only to bump into Kei.
“Watchya doin’?” He asked the man, taking a step closer. The man pulled out a knife.
“Listen kid, stay away, or I’ll kill you.” He said coldly. He pointed away from the alley. “Walk away, now.” He said. Kei shook his head.
“What harm am I doing? I’m only here to admire your painting. It looks great, and it shouldn’t be hidden under those boxes…: He said. Without warning, the man swung the knife at him. Kei dodged backwards, pushing his armed hand against the wall, with one hand, and punching him in the face with the other. He pulled the knife free of his hand, hurling it at one of the boxes, and restraining the man.
“You have the right to shut up and walk.” He said, pushing the man to his feet, and dragging him to jail for petty theft. He then returned to the scene of the crime, scooping up the painting, and bringing it back to the woman. It was a very beautiful painting, of that Kingdom by the sea, so far from the desert they lived in here. He brought the painting back to the woman he knew by the name of Annabel Lee. It took a few shouts from him to get her attention, as she seemed to be occupied with talking to her husband. When she finally took notice, she apologised, and said her world revolved around her husband. Kei shrugged, walking away. He was a child still, technically, so he had no place to judge, but that old woman was a child at heart as well. He headed back to the HQ and collected his Ryo, before heading home to work on his new puppet, Neko, who was finally going to become real.
