"Shard of sehai" was an enhancer that Kozai had created based on accounts that he had found in the Iwagakure mountains. As such, it was (at the time), merely a premature research project that never really went anywhere. However, he now wished to determine what else was out there. Mountains were a primordial aspect of the planet, being formed by tectonic actions and such, and Kozai knew that meant collections of energy that he could exploit and explore. All things natural could become tainted and artificial by the hands of men, he knew. He would soon have experience with this, he thought. As a scientist, he was ever delving deeper and deeper into more and increasingly more unethical subjects. However, with his rational and slightly cruel personality, ethics were of little to no concern to him. If he kept a subject alive, it was for an academic purpose, not out of mercy. He had been dissuaded from that path long ago, even before he had begun down the path to knowledge, a path that he was now irreversibly committed to. Kozai pondered these things as he gazed at the mountains as the sun peeked out from their tops, casting a warm glow on the village.
Now, it was time for him to make a little expedition into the mountains, to find something interesting. There was sure to be something in those stones to alleviate his boredom. After all, he had found the information necessary to re-create the shard of sehai, after all. Perhaps he needed to go inwards... and downwards. He almost chuckled, those were the exact opposite directions to those prescribed by most religions. Brushing such philosophic thoughts from his mind, he got up and zipped toward the mountains. He jogged at first, but then raised his speed to almost a sprint, which was far faster than most minds could even wrap their heads around. To most, it appeared that when he moved at this speed, he moved instantaneously from one place to another. Only to certain ninja were his movements actually apparent, and to most of his level, he was still ingloriously fast. He entered the mountains, and almost immediately felt the cooler air rushing past him. Yes, that made sense. Wind and weather patterns created a rain shadow over the mountains, but the wind itself stopped here as a cool rush of air. That meant there was probably a desert to the west, but Kozai had certainly never ever been there.
As he passed some of the lower mountains, however, the air started to grow even colder, as if there was some force that was trying to prevent him from reaching whatever he was heading towards. Ha! Who did nature think he was? He WAS the cold, being a Yuki clan member (not that he truly realized what that meant yet). He was, for all purposes of chakra, the cold itself. He pushed on, his speed and strength being enough for him to almost literally bounce from mountainside to mountainside. As such, he was tacking somewhat between the winds, enabling highly efficient travel.
Suddenly, he passed through what seemed to be a wind wall (at his level of power, it was quite easy). Well, this was new. He appeared to be deep within the mountain range, in an area where the plant life was... choked? The trees, forbs, and grasses looked to be slimy and half dead, as they slumped over and rotted, still living, down the slopes toward a cavern opening at the foot of the mountain in front of him.
As he gazed around, he noted that there was something else here... that is, other than the odor of the rotting plants.
Firstly, he noted the lack of animal life. That was no surprise; what kind of animal would want to eat rotten plants? Then he looked at the cavern itself. The muck from the plants oozed into it, but... for what purpose? Was it just a natural coincidence? Perhaps... until Kozai honed his senses. Ah, there it was. Chakra. The energy seeped forth from the cavern opening, tempting him with its very presence. Hmm... well, caution to the wind, just like Echo would probably have done. Kozai jumped from his position to the entrance of the cavern, and took the first step inside.
Immediately, as if it sensed an intruder, whatever was inside the cavern flared its chakra. Hmph, such a thing didn't intimidated Kozai, as its power was beneath his. He flared back in response, the white aura of his chakra overwhelming the roar of the enemy's. Almost instantly, the other chakra quieted down, and Kozai grinned slightly. Whatever it was in there, he had concluded... was possibly not human. What he had felt didn't seem like any kind of human chakra he had ever felt before. In addition, he thought, it was probably the cause of the rotting plants around the cave itself.
Surprisingly, the tunnel grew wider, not more narrow as he proceeded. Beneath him, the slop of decayed plant material flowed as a trickle, even though the slope was increasing. Thus, he thought, whatever was feeding on it was generating enough force to keep it flowing upwards against gravity. Hungry beast, probably, but then again, what kind of chakra could create such a force? Especially considering that it was plant matter that was being manipulated here. His curiosity was increasing by the second, and Kozai pressed ahead, as the cave grew deeper and darker. It seemed that he was heading upwards into the core of the mountain now, and the pulse of chakra he felt before was growing ever so slightly stronger than it had before.
Yes.... come to us...
Hmm? What was that? It looked like whatever was in there was calling to him. Kozai wasn't that insane, not at this point in time. As such, he knew that it was something in there, something alive, or at the very least, sentient. As he pushed through a couple of rotten cobwebs (how did those spiders get down here, anyway), he came across something that impressed even him (which at that point was pretty hard to do).
The enormous cavern was the largest enclosed space he had seen in a very long time (the last one being the cathedral that Near had built. All that black marble had now gone to better use). The walls were made of a obsidian like substance, that appeared to be coated with liquid. The trail of plant matter that he had been following thus far was now somehow floating into a sizeable sphere of dark, crackling energy that floated in the center of the chamber. It was about three-fourths the size of the cavern itself, and it appeared to contain the chakra that Kozai sought at this point.
In fact, it was this energy sphere, or whatever it actually was, that provided the strange purple illumination to the cavern itself. As it was, the sphere somehow worked that way. Not being an expert on quantum physics, Kozai shrugged and ignored the potential implications of this, and walked around the sphere, being careful not to touch it. Hmm... this piqued his interest. the sphere did. How would it interact with human tissue? He wasn't willing to try with any of the samples he had now, but if he somehow managed to get some in here...
Come closer.
Ooh, that was interesting. To step into the sphere itself... was a wildly bad move, rationally. Kozai had no measure of the sphere's properties, or what kind of effects it would have on him. All in all, he was probably making a mistake by doing this. In the end, though, he was sure he could deal with whatever came to him. After all, the worst thing that could possibly happen here was to be eternally trapped in the sphere, with no one to help him or drag him out. Well, his chakra did seem to be larger than the one in the sphere, so unless it was a cleverly made trap, Kozai probably didn't have to worry about anything much.
He put his hand into the sphere, which felt no different on the other side. The sphere's border didn't burn, didn't harm. Kozai supposed that it would do so if he made any contrary or hostile action, so he did not. Better safe than sorry, the ancients had warned him, so he followed such advice. He took a first step into the sphere, not knowing what to expect. It didn't seem to be particularly dangerous, but you never knew...
Suddenly, an inexorable force pulled him in. Like a tidal wave, it seemed to push him from behind rather than pull him from the front. He entered through the border of the sphere, and found himself in a fast, purple and black expanse, the two colors swirling about him. Ah, so this was the answer. As it was, the sphere seemed to be some kind of portal to a dimension, similar to the one the Arcanis had created. Well, Kozai appeared to now be trapped within this world, just floating there. Now, where was that voice.... the one that had invited him here?
A shadow appeared from the darkness, if that was even possible. It was.... a dragon? It was followed by several more of its kind. Oh, no. Dragons were the worst.
"What are you doing here in our home, clean human?"
Oh, so it could speak, at the very least. Well, communication was now possible. But dragons were the pits.
"Hmph. How dare you call me clean, lizard!?" Kozai would speak, flaring his chakra and pushing (somehow) the dragons back slightly. "You are beings of fire, and as such, I do not appreciate such insults. I have dirtied my hands more than you can imagine."
The dragon recoiled, then a gear-shaped shadow appeared beneath them. "You seem like a most interesting human. Judging by your attire, you have discarded humanity for the pursuit of knowledge. We'll humor you for as long as you humor us..." With that, a much smaller dragon would arise from the "gear" between them, bearing a scroll. "Sign this with your blood, and you will be able to use kuchiyose no jutsu to bring one of our kind to your side. Each one of us, however, has a set of conditions, specific conditions, that you must follow when summoning him. Some require sacrifices, others prefer specific kinds of opponents. Upon signing this contract, it is your duty and responsibility to figure out exactly which ones need what." At this point, it seemed that the dragon was reading off a rote script, but since the scroll wasn't open yet, it was obvious that he probably wasn't. Still, this was probably a ritual that they had to go through regardless of the situation.
"Very well." He pricked his finger on a proferred dragon claw, and signed his name on it. He didn't feel any different, but the shadows of the area shifted faster and faster.... until suddenly, he found himself outside of the mountain, at the entrance of the cavern.
Well then... that was eventful. Now, all he had to do was make it back to the village. After resting up for a few minutes, he would zip through the mountains at top speed, returning to his original position on the rooftop. By the time he returned, the sun was already high in the sky, casting a warm heat down on Iwa. Now that he had some allies, he felt a little more secure if he was to be caught in uncomfortable situations such as the one he had been in only the day before in the leader's office with Agito.
Turning toward the west, Kozai looked toward his destination. Soon, he felt, everything would change for the worse, and he would have to steel himself for that change. He stood from his perch and jumped down into the empty street, descending into his lab.
