Kozai was at last, Lord Tsuchikage. But to him, there wasn't much change other than the increase in authority and responsibility. The boy was, however, concerned with other things. From what information he had already gathered, he needed to figure out how to best utilize what he had gained from that boy at the gates. So... it was time to visit the hospital. Kozai walked outside, into the bright morning. What a beautiful day... perfect for spending all his time indoors. Thus was Kozai's mentality, rather odd for someone who was a shinobi, and a protector of the village itself.
He walked through the warm streets of the village, intent on his destination. He needed to get to the hospital, in order to access its facilities, the machines in his lab would not be enough. In the hospital lay the real gear that was required for micro DNA analysis... and he knew just how to use those machines. He gritted his teeth; he was pretty short on time. Sooner or later, someone would do something bad... and he needed to have to power to stop it. This would be a small step in the right direction. His left fist kept clenching and unclenching, as if it too, knew of the impending danger.
How did he know that such doom would come upon him? Well... he had listened to Echo, and had turned an inner ear to his instincts. After being deadened for so long, they told him nothing... until last night. He had dreamed of impending destruction and of various people, most of which were not pleasant. Monsters and men... what had he just seen? As he passed through the gateway that led to the hospital, he pondered the dream... and its meaning. If it was taken literally, then he was greatly justified in his cynicism, as he would most probably die shortly.
A dark tunnel.... and Kozai was being carried along it through the air by some unknown force. Could he fly in the future? Well, that was most certainly looking forward to. Ever since speaking to Echo in his earlier days, he had a slight interest in flight, especially fuuton based flight. Fuuton itself was not one of his specialties, but that didn't particularly matter. What did was the light that he was heading towards. It was colored.... orange? That was odd... light was normally colored that way, now was it? No... the spectrum of light usually combined together to make white... But wait-
The tunnel opened up onto a ghastly scene. It was a village, but there was no one in it. The village was just fine, as if it had been that way for all time, but it seemed that all the people had mysteriously been.... vanished. Kozai shook his head, it didn't make sense. People don't disappear... unless influenced by an external force. Instantly, he was on his guard. Something was off here... and Kozai needed to collect information... NO.
What was that?
NO.
It was Echo's voice.... telling him to trust his gut rather than his brain. Eh, well, it was a dream, so it didn't matter.
When he reached the hospital doorway, he wasted no time, but went in. The air was much cooler here, to Kozai's satisfaction. He gave a quick thumbs-up (though somewhat absentmindedly) to the clerk at the front desk. She smiled shyly, she seemed to be only a teenager. If Kozai had been younger, he would have felt the urge to attack her, but no longer. Those irrational things were mere figments of the past, and must be ignored. He walked through to the benchside, or lab, portion of the hospital. Being a ninja of the village, he would be admitted here, and stepped through to the pleasant lab inside.
This was, unlike his own lab, NOT a place where monstrosities were created and such. It was also a place where ethics were in full swing, so he had to be careful as to the purpose of his being there. If anyone knew the true reason as to his visit, he might get removed from the premises, so he had to excercize maximum caution. Sitting down at a lab table, he opened up his notes. Apparently, the wood release tissue he had found could be fused with Uchiha DNA and eyes for... some kind of destructive effect. That much he knew, and it was certainly worth looking into.
His instincts told him that this was not just a normal natural event, and that someone was responsible. Echo perhaps? He knew that Echo could be pretty wild, and if the man was drunk... well, Kozai had surely never experienced that before, but he could at least extrapolate what it could mean for a surrounding area. What a man... so irrational. Well, he was Kozai's superior, and probably knew more of the world and of shinobi ways than he himself did. Well, at any rate, from the surrounding area, Kozai could gather that this was certainly his home village, Iwagakure.
Well, first, he needed to get something out of the way. He used a scalpel, and lightly scraped away some of his own tissue. The man put it into some ringer's solution, and prepared it for microscopy. Gazing at it under the lens, he gazed at it... hmm.. it appeared that a locus was occupied. That is, a locus was a slot of DNA that coded for .... what exactly? It seemed different from other pieces of DNA, in terms of its composition. Interesting indeed. The locus seemed pretty small, in strict terms of centimorgans; those were the units of measurement for such DNA things.
The next time he looked into this, he reminded himself, he would have to see as to the molecular biology of these sections of DNA. But as it happened, he theorized, this particular section of DNA turned up in his mitochondrial DNA as well.
As it happened, it did. How interesting... something he had inherited from both his parents. Well, this could become something interesting. It appeared that this was the DNA that coded for his bloodline, the Ice Element. But only one gene could occupy a locus at a time... if he was going to attain wood release, this would become a problem.
Something told him, though, that the cause of this wasn't Echo. Call it an "initial gut feeling", if you will. He didn't think that Echo would use fire over wind, and it looked like the place had been completely charred by flame. That was his cerebral thoughts, that came right after his 6th sense kicked into play. Good, he was still keeping honest to himself. Even in a silly dream, it was pretty damn important. Well, as with most natural disasters, the most important thing was to find the epicenter, which looked like it was near the center of the village.
Kozai began to migrate there, taking a close look at what used to be his home... or was it? Truly, he did not know. Recently, he had started to doubt that he had even been born in Iwa, which to Near would probably have been a traitorous thought. But Kozai was sure he was much stronger than Near could ever hoped to have been. He had taken hits from the most powerful of ninja... and come out without a scratch.
As it was, he had to perform more molecular studies. He activated some of the equipment around the room, and began to measure some of the locus statistics. DNA wise, it seemed to be pretty normal DNA, but one never knew with DNA. It wasn't an assumption, at any rate, that Kozai was willing to make, as an academic of any kind. He then proceeded to measure the length of the gene locus... Huh, that was odd. Kozai widthdrew for a quick bathroom break. While he was on the loo, he would think about what he had just seen in his own DNA.
The gene... was unusually short. That meant that there was a pretty large control sequence around the gene. Hmm... if he could manipulate and examine this particular control sequence, he could potentially manipulate his entire genome. And that meant manipulating the genome of others as well. Yes... this was the beginning of something great and awesome. But first... to find the appropriate tools. He would need some splicers, and those were easy to get. He needed to go talk to the radiologists to find some. Pulling up his pants, he walked out, and headed for the radiology section.
