Mask on the Outside
Wed Mar 25, 2015 5:30 pm
Salzem had just returned from a walk and he couldn't say he was looking forward to the return. He gazed around the busy people through his mask. He caught the eye of a couple of adults, each which redirected their gaze when they noticed him staring back. His breath echoed through his mask, giving him something else to focus on other than people staring at his mask. He seemed to lug himself around town, trying to remember which way it was to get home from here. More people looking at him, apparently unnerved by his breathing mask. He held his head low, trying to keep the looks of curiosity and suspicion out of his gaze while he walked. He sat down on a near by bench, setting his herb bag beside him. He sat, listening to his breathing, aided by the mask. He felt restricted and misjudged. He hated that he had to wear this mask. He hated that everyone feared him because of what could hide underneath. Salzem tugged at his mask, pulling it off in frustration. He could breath without it for a little while, but without it, his lungs cannot process oxygen properly. He looked at his reflection in an eye of the mask. Although dark, he could make out a dark haired boy with blood red eyes. He flinched when he saw his eyes. They scared him. They seemed to look back a him with a dark, almost murderous gaze. Salzem looked around at the people going about their business in front of him. They weren't staring anymore, but he did catch some troubled glances. Salzem felt his lungs burning and his head becoming fuzzy. He pulled his mask back on and sat on the bench, looking at the shadow underneath his feet. Why do they look at me so? Salzem thinks to himself. I'm not scary. I'm not bad. Why? Salzem looks up, hearing footsteps moving in his general direction. He looked up and noticed a band of three kids moving toward him. His first thought was one of hope. Perhaps they have come to talk. His hope dissipates as he sees the expression on their faces. One of malicious glee. Salzem started to get up but they got to him first and pushed him back into bench. Two at arms, one more up front. He struggled against their grip but Salzem didn't have the strength to tear himself free. One of the kids tore his mask off of his face and dropped it to the ground, forcing him to breath toxic air. He looked around for help amongst the crowd, but none of them seemed to be even looking in their direction. He stared at the crowd in disbelief. They were going to let this happen. They were going to let him die! His blood red eyes shoot to the kids in front of him, rage filling them. He has had enough!

The rage in his eyes causes the the kid in front of him, the apparent leader, to recoil in surprise. Salzem used the distraction and tore his arms free of the other two. He felt his chest burning and his head light. He needed his mask. He jumped for it, arms out in front of him. He landed atop it, quickly pulling it to his face for breath. He breathed deep, pulling and tightening the mask around his face. His rage erupted as he noticed the crowd watching him. HIM out of the four of them. The one being attacked! The one being wronged and all they do is watch. Then suddenly, his rage dissipated just as quickly as it had formed. He felt nothing now but a heavy weight in his stomach. His rage had seemed to have transcended emotional form and felt like it had become physical in the pit of his gut.The three other kids regrouped and noticing that they weren't being stopped for their transgressions, advanced on Salzem. Salzem held up his hands in defense. His body seemed to move on it's own as if Salzem was watching from the outside. The kids attacked, throwing punches and taunting him. Salzem backed out of the way of each punch, using his hands to redirect each potential blow. Emotionless and efficient. Salzem watched helplessly. He knew what would happen next. When the leader threw he next punch, Salzem stepped inside his attack, Shoving his masked face into the kid's exposed one. He tried to push Salzem away but Salzem grabbed his arm with both of his and tossed it out to the side, leaving the kid's belly open. He brought a fist slamming into the kid's gut. The kid gasped in pain but didn't fall as the punch didn't have much impact. The other two kids rushed Salzem from behind, attempting to tear him off. Before they could reach him, Salzem slammed another punch quickly into the leader's gut before leaping clear of the other two's charge path and landing in a crouch. Salzem tried to gain control of his body but it was like reaching for something just out of reach. He stood, emotionless and efficient, hands raised in self defense. The two kids barreled into the leader and the three of them sprawled into the street, separating the tide of spectators. As the tide parted, Salzem felt the control over his body return. The terrifying calm disappeared and was replaced with fear. He had just beaten up those kids! He didn't even bother looking at the crowd anymore. He knew what they felt. It was no different than it had been before. He turned and ran. He didn't care where he ended up. He just ran. Salzem's fear turned to guilt as he ran, causing tears and ragged breathing to hider his speed. Finally, he stopped running. He found himself at the edge of a pond, under the shadow of an old willow tree. He heard the sound of small frogs and insects go about their business by the water, peaceful and alone. He flopped down on the grass by the bank, all the strength leaving his legs. He pulled his knees to his chest and stared at the water through his mask. He was a monster. He fought and beat up a kid with no consideration of care! He sat by the bank, letting his sorrow fill the space between him and the water, hoping it would all go away.

The dark emotions crept away eventually, Leaving Salzem alone with no one but himself as company. His sadness dissolved into perspective. Perspective of himself, of other people, of the creatures that buzzed about before him, doing nothing but the cycle of life. He sat alone, thinking about what he is. He was human. This was obvious. But he was also... something more. Salzem thought about how he easily dispatched his three attackers. What if he could do that again, and this time, make sure it never happens again? He chastised himself for thinking such thoughts. The very principle of becoming stronger to just fight and kill sickened him to the core but, in its own dark depressing way, made him smile a little. He thought about the options he would have, the things he could do, the people who would no longer torment him! At the climax of these thoughts, Salzem tore them from his mind. He would not let these murderous thoughts be the end of him. He would endure any pain, take any punishment, suffer loss after loss if he could remain as good and right as he has always been. Salzem looked around to make sure no one was watching him. There was not. Salzem sighed in relief and took of his mask again. He felt it was time for some breathing exercises. He breathed in and out, focusing on one point, a small cat-tail plant on the other side of the pond. After ten minutes of this, he felt light headed and his lungs burned, no longer able to preform it's function without support. Salzem kept breathing though, forcing air into his lungs. Gradually, his breathing turned to coughing and with that brought wheezing. Salzem was at his limits and he knew it. He snatched up his mask quickly and sucked air in deep. His breathing returned to normal after a few deep breaths. He sighed, tightening the mask around his face. He laid his head back on the grass, putting his his hands behind his head. He tried to feel at peace watching the clouds go by but he couldn't calm down. He sat up again looking at his surroundings. Salzem felt restless, like he was sitting around all day. He decided it was time to get home he got up from the bank of the pond, turned and walked back into town, the feeling of restlessness following him the whole way.
