Kozata Shinkou was finished with the Land of Fire. It didn't really bore him.... he had had lots of adventures there, and would remember them forever. However, he had no clue how he had gotten there in the first place. Thus saying, it was imperative that he get back home as soon as possible. With Zebra's fresh corpse in hand, he began walking. Now, he knew from memory (or at least, what little he had) that the Village hidden in mist lay across some measure of water. So, he headed north, then east. Hey, this was starting to look familiar.
The landscape around him was slowly changing as he went... it was as if the place was now more scrubbed than before. Now, unknown to Kozata, this concept was known as ecological succession. In this case, it was not known to the people in the area whether the changes in the landscape as one progressed down to the sea were a result of primary succession or secondary succesion. The difference was simple. Primary succession was a complete destruction of the area, down to the very soil, such as the passing of a glacier, or an enormous catastrophic nuclear blast, or some sort.
Secondary succession, however, merely resulted in the destruction of most plant life. An example of this was a massive wildfire. Of course, Kozata had none of these things in his mind as he passed by what looked like some purple flowered shrubs. These were a sign that primary succession had occured here a while ago, and also a sign that Kozata was off course. He didnt' notice, though, his thoughts were only on home and what lay ahead. The mist village! It would be wonderful to return home and get some peace and quiet for once in his life.
So, when he got to the beach and a dock, he hopped on his ol' rowboat and sailed off.... in the completely wrong direction. His navigational skills needed work, especially as he didn't have a map with him. In any case, he was headed not toward the new kirigakure no sato, but the remains of the old kiri, where there were only a few islands left. The rowing was easy, as his sail caught a good wind. This made his job easier, and faster, as he beached on an island. Hey... this place didn't look familiar at all. How weird.
Sitting down, he looked around. The area was misty, and he could not see that much... his visibility was limited to only about 25 meters, even the sun's light was cooler here, diluted by the tyndall effect of diffraction. This caused the scattering of light, and of course, the absorption of much of the heat energy by the water. Heeeeyyyy.... this place was familiar after all, but not in the way that Kozata knew it to be. This place was much more.... sinister. As if something very, very bad had happened here. Little did Kozata know what had occurred.
