Day 1
Ren sat by the window of his office, brushing a strand of his silver white hair out of the way as he looked out at the white cloudy, misted, morning sky. A half forgotten cup of tea by his side and a simple black book in his hands, a pen clutched absentmindedly in his fingers. Ren had resolved himself that he would avenge his fallen student, and to do that he needed to get more power in the village. The jounin exams were the key to that Ren was sure of it; the next exams were scheduled to occur in a week’s time from today, that would no doubt be plenty of time to prepare, but Ren needed more than that. Ren didn’t just need to prepare, he needed assurance that this would go his way. With a loud click Ren pressed his pen to paper and began to write ‘I need to know exactly what the exam is going to be; All I know so far is that it involves that accursed arena, probably something to do with the underground maze since they use the above ground area for the chunin exams. At any rate the first step is to find out what the exams specifically entails.’ Ren thought, his pen writing out his thoughts in a simple list form so that he could keep track of what he would be doing this week.
Step 1: Figure out what the Jounin exams entail.
‘Okay, now after I figure out what we’re doing, what would be next… ‘I guess if they really are holding them under the arena then I’m going to have to know how to navigate that maze, it wont end well if I end up having to fight someone with my back against the wall, and I’m better at setting traps than fighting someone outright. Okay, If I can get my hands on the blueprints for that arena then I can probably memorise at the very least the important parts of it…’ Ren scribbled down another note, in his list of things to do before the Jounin exams
Step 1: Figure out what the Jounin exams entail.
Step 2: Find blueprints for the Kirigakure no sato arena labyrinth
Ren nodded his head at that, bringing the pen up to his mouth as he began to tap his lower lip in thought, ‘right… right… so If I know what I’m going to be doing ahead of time, and I know the layout of the exams, that’s already a significant advantage, but what else can I do to make sure I pass this... ‘ Ren sat there thinking for a while, the pen gently tapping against his lip as his mind ran through various scenarios, many ended with his death, others with him lying injured or dying, unable to do anything about it. Ren ignored those scenario's, only focusing on them long enough to take note of anything that he might have changed in that scenario. Okay, there's too many variables here, I no doubt I’m going to be fighting somebody, Knowing Xyxer he wouldnt be happy if there wasn't at least some bloodshed during these things… So! Knowing who, he’s going to pick for us to fight would make it far easier to prepare for this exam far easier!’ Ren thought, the pieces beginning to click into place as he made another note.
Step 1: Figure out what the Jounin exams entail.
Step 2: Find blueprints for the Kirigakure no sato arena labyrinth
Step 3: Find out the identity of the potential proctors for the Jounin Exams
‘Hmm, so if i know who I’m likely to be fighting, how can I use that to my advantage?’ Ren thought to himself as he sat there thinking. His hand absentmindedly reached out and placed the pen on the table as he switched to the tea cup, *Pshhpht “gah, this tastes disgusting!” Ren said aloud, as he spat out the cold bitter tea. “Well that put a sour taste to things.” Ren said, sighing as he picked up the pen again, alright if I’m finding out the identity of the proctors anyway I may as well see if I can gather some records on them and their skills. Who knows perhaps one of them will be weak to my fuinjutsu, and if their weak to my fuinjutsu they’d be the one I’d want to be set up against’ Ren though, scribbling down the note on his list
Step 1: Figure out what the Jounin exams entail.
Step 2: Find blueprints for the Kirigakure no sato arena labyrinth
Step 3: Find out the identity of the potential proctors for the Jounin Exams
Step 4: Identify which of the proctors would be the easiest to defeat
Step 5: Arrange for the other proctors to be unavailable
Glancing down Ren looked at his list and smiled, ‘huh this is actually shaping up nicely, I have a steady and stable plan in place and a list of achievable goals to set that plan in motion.’ still smiling Ren snapped his little black book shut with a loud clap and stood up, placing his pen in a pocket and taking his coat from the back of his chair. Tossing the clothing over his shoulders Ren strode out of the door to his office and down the halls of the academy; the place would have to do without him for the rest of the week.
‘Now if I’m going to find out what the exams entail the best way to do that would be to ask one of the proctors, but to do that I’ll need to find one. So I guess I’m skipping step one for now, next up on the list is the blueprints, that should be an easy one. I’ll no doubt find records in the offices of the architects that designed the place, and the man who handles most of kirigakure no sato’s architecture is of course Sir Theodesius Reginald Arnold Herman Decius, a strange man who fancies himself a nobleman with a penchant for theatrics to match; indeed he was also, widely regarded as the most arrogant, pompous, person; other than the great Mizukage Xyxer Gyojin himself who, though no one would say it to his face, easily took the cake when it came to arrogance; to ever grace the village. Sir Theodesius Reginald Arnold Herman Decius the Twenty Second was so arrogant in fact that he simply refused to respond to anything less than his full name, title and all, thus any attempt to converse with him in any sort of social setting usualy consisted of a clamor of voices saying Sir Theodesius Reginald Arnold Herman Decius the Twenty Second, over the top of each other, with the occasional actual word mingled into the cacophony of voices.
‘I really don’t fancy dealing with that man’ Ren thought with a shudder ‘although perhaps I can sweet talk my way into his offices when he’s not there though…’
Ren nodded to himself at that plan, it seemed like a good idea, and so he headed off in the direction of Sir Theodesius Reginald Arnold Herman Decius’s buisiness quarters. A surprisingly extravagant building for one in the lower comercial district; a large concrete slab stood as the foundation of the building, making the building, which was already comicaly oversized in comparison to its surrounding neighbors, appear to tower above its kin. A long row of steps with no less than twenty two tori gates marked the path up to the building, Striding up those very same steps and into the building Ren found himself in a simple receptionist area, the wooden floor boards and simple reception desk making for a stark contrast with the extremities of the building. A stern looking woman with her hair in a bun, wearing a… ‘wait is… is that a kimono??? You know what I dont want to know’ The woman looked up at him, her nose twitching as she said in a voice that just seemed wrong when contrasted with her stern face and station. “Oh my, good afternoon kind master, I’m afraid Sir Theodesius Reginald Arnold Herman Decius the Twenty Second is away at the moment, but if there is *anything* I can do to help you, I’m happy to help” The woman said, putting far more emphasis on the word anything than was necessary.
Ren shuddered, but forced himself to reply “Yes, I’m here to view the construction plans for the Arena Labyrinth.” Ren said, giving the woman a serious look that conveyed how little interest he had in dealing with whatever weird shit had her acting this way. The woman coughed awkwardly as she paused, as she was struggling to choose her words carefully. “Now master, I’m terribly sorry but I can’t just go giving out those plans to anyone, after all the blueprints for buildings in the village are to be kept under strict lock and key.” She said, shifting uncomfortably as she spoke. Ren put on a fake smile as he leaned over the girl’s desk and looked her in the eye. “We’ll be that as you may, in case you haven't noticed, I’m more than qualified to access the building records.” Ren said, pulling out a piece of paper from his pocket and sliding it across the table, you’ll find all my identification papers and qualifications there. As head of the academy you can obviously understand I need access to the blueprints in order to deem whether the building is suitable for use in training exercises.” Ren said, his smile turning into something of a smug grin as she read over the papers.
The woman scowled, clearly displeased at being outmaneuvered Ren, “Very well master, your paperwork all seems to be in order, of course I shall accompany you to the archive room. She said, standing and leading him into the back of the building and down a series of long winding corridors; for a building designed to be an architect's office the construction seemed to have no rhyme or rhythm to it, eventually of course they reached a large intricate double door with intricate carved images winding down the wood. Opening the door the woman lead Ren into a massive two story library, lines upon lines of scrolls sat in their canisters, stacked atop each other in various cases. Ren was stunned at the sheer magnitude of the place, and he had to admit a little impressed.
The woman came back with a pile of scrolls in her arms. “These are the ones you are looking for master, now If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to work.” Ren tuned to the girl as she left, “oh yes, thank you, before I forget…” The girl turned to him as he walked towards her. “Yes master?” She said, clearly struggling to hide her lack of patience. Ren, having moved to stand next to the woman. In a flash of rapid movement Ren had lashed out his hand and placed it upon her head, Reading her mind and overlaying it with a copy of her personality that was loyal to him first and no one else, the invisible seal that he placed searing itself into her tenketsu point before he released her. The woman was suddenly far more amicable when he spoke next. “That will be all, don't tell anyone I was here, that goes without saying.” Ren said, taking the blueprints in hand and walking to a nearby window, where he body flickered out and across the gap to one of the smaller surrounding buildings. In a few minutes he was back in his office, blueprints in hand. Ren spent the rest of the day, studying the blueprints and plotting out routes through the maze. By the end of the day Ren had memorised all the important twists and turns of the labyrinth.
Allowing himself a small smile Ren pulled out his little black book and crossed out one of the goals he had set on his list
Step 1: Figure out what the Jounin exams entail. - To be done later
Step 3: Find out the identity of the potential proctors for the Jounin Exams
Step 4: Identify which of the proctors would be the easiest to defeat
Step 5: Arrange for the other proctors to be unavailable
That done, Ren stood up and made his way home for the night, tomorrow would be another day, and no doubt another goal down.
Day 2
Ren rose bright and early that morning, awoken by the chirping of a lone bird that had decided to make its home outside his window in a small birch tree, how either of those two things survived in the harsh kirigakure environment, Ren had no idea, but it was heartening to see all the same. Rising early Ren made himself a quick breakfast before throwing on his usual outfit of a pair of jeans, a loose dress shirt and a long overcoat before pulling out his book and sitting down with a cup of tea. ‘Now then, what am I going to do today?’ Ren thought as he took a sip of his tea and opened his book.
Ren tapped his fingers on the table as he thought, ‘I still have to complete that first step, but perhaps I can find that information out from one of the proctors’ Ren thought, a plan forming in his head as he sat there drinking his tea… A few minutes later Ren left his apartment, with a simple pan in mind. The clerks that worked at the mission assignment office would of course have to know who was assigned for the exams at the end of the week, otherwise there’d be a risk of one of the examiners being assigned to a mission. Striding down the streets of the village towards the mission assignment office Ren plotted out his plan’s, if he could get one of the clerks alone then he could read the clerks mind and find out what she knew, but there was more than that to Ren’s plan. He could not only find out who would be proctoring the exams, he could also get access to the records on their skills and weaknesses. Not just that, he might even be able to get the clerk to fudge the records and send the less advantageous proctors off on missions so they wouldn’t be a threat.
Striding into the building he caught the eye of one of the clerks, one he’d had dealings with in the past. “SARAH!” He called out across the room, catching the girl’s attention and holding his arms out as he moved towards the girl for a hug. It wasn’t entirely normal for him to do something like that, but the two of them hadn't really seen each other since he took over the academy so it was within the realms of reason. “Oh Ren! Funny seeing you here, I thought you were too busy running the academy to spend your time here with us lowly admin staff.” She said, teasing him as she returned the hug.
Letting go and stifling a cough Ren put on a smile, “Actually that's why I’m here” Ren said with a chuckle, he already had his story planned out in his mind at this point. “I’m hoping to get the records on some of the missions that need to be done and staff records on potential chunin that would be equipped to lead teams of new graduates.” Ren said, still smiling at the girl. “Perhaps I could have a look at them?” He asked the girl, knowing full well that he had the right to access that information. “Yes, yes of course, come I’ll take you out the back” She said, turning to lead the way. ‘Perfect’ Ren thought as he followed her out the back.
The two of them made there way back through the simple and well organised building, a pleasant change from the winding hallways and madness of yesterday before they entered a simple room with a table and a number of filing cabinets. Turning her back to him the woman began searching through the files “Now let me see, I believe the files you’re looking for will b-” The woman was cut off as Ren knocked her out with a careful blow to the back of her head. There wouldn't be any long term damage of course, but all the same Ren’s stomach churned a little at betraying the woman’s trust in him. Infiltrating and sabotaging an enemy village was far different from infiltrating your own. With a marked sigh Ren placed his hand on the woman’s head, quickly reading her memories, extracting the knowledge he was after and then placing another invisible seal on the woman to replace her memories with the two of them having a pleasant conversation before he left and she decided to have a short nap before going back to work. That unpleasantness over and done with Ren picked up the woman and sat her in a chair before walking out of the room and then the building. Waving goodbye to a few of the clerks in the reception on his way. It wouldn’t do after all to be seen storming off ignoring everyone, or acting suspicious. Once out on the street Ren had time to think, to clear his mind and plan out his next step. He’d certainly already dealt with another step of his plan, he now knew that there were three proctors assigned to the exams; one a taijutsu and weaponry specialist by the name of joan de blanc, an stern imperious woman, and the one that was neither a significant threat to Ren if he played his cards right, nor someone he could just ignore. The second Proctor, an elderly man by the name of Jonathan Romanov, was a Genjutsu specialist, the man was perhapse the best matched to fight Ren, assuming he could get around the man’s genjutsu that is, he was weak in combat and relatively slow compared to most men in the profession. The third and final proctor was a space time and ninjutsu expert, in fact if the records were to be believed the only reason the man wasn't far higher ranked was because of his crippling alcohol addiction Ren didn’t like the sound of fighting the man head on, he was no doubt the worst matchup for Ren who’s skills lay in traping and confusing the enemy when he was forced into direct combat. Still Ren could see a way to use the man’s fondness for alcohol against him. Pulling out his black book and turning down an alleyway Ren crossed out another two goals in his book before noting down a new goal, a star next to it to denote its importance.
Step 1: Figure out what the Jounin exams entail. - To be done later
Step 3: Find out the identity of the potential proctors for the Jounin Exams - Completed
Step 4: Identify which of the proctors would be the easiest to defeat
Step 5: Arrange for the other proctors to be unavailable
Step 6: Find a way to counter Romanov’s Genjutsu.*
Then snapping closed his book Ren strode off to a local bar, the last few pieces of this puzzle falling into place.
A few hours later Ren sat at the bar; a glass of undrunk scotch in his hand; as much as Ren himself had taken to the golden liqueur of late to cope with some of his recent troubles, but even so he had not sunk so low as to dull his senses when he was attempting to infiltrate and mislead. This may not be an official mission, but it should be treated as one all the same, if he was caught before this all played out Ren would no doubt find himself in at least some trouble. ‘There he is’ Ren though as he saw a drunken man move back to sitting in the corner after having gone to the toilet. Ren had been watching the man drink himself silly for the past few hours, and it was now that he saw his chance. The ban was swaying back and forth unsteadily even as he sat at the table. Standing up and moving to take a seat next to the man Ren spoke as he pulled out a chair. “Now friend you look a little unsteady there, how about I take you home?” Ren asked the man politely. A scowl on his face the man’s reply was swift and harsh, as Ren expected. “How About you shove off! You damned newgen ninja think you're hot shit don't ya! Well let me tell you something you little piece of shit! I’ve been fighting for this village since before it was Kirigakure; SINCE BEFORE IT WAS Shimigakure!!! I’ve seen things you could never imagine and I. WILL. NOT. BE! TOLD! WHAT TO DO BY SOME TRUMPED UP LITTLE!” THe man rose from his chari and in a flash of speed surprising for someone as drunk as he was, threw his glass at Ren who scarcely managed to evade the object. The glass shattering against the wall behind him and drawing the attention of the bouncer who started heading their way. Taking a deep breath Ren held up his hands in a non-threatening gesture so that the bouncer knew it wasn't him who was trying to cause a ruckus… or at least that’s what they would think. With a deceptively pleasant smile Ren’s next move was to speak again, “I think you’ve definitely had enough old man.” Ren said, keeping his voice low and back to the bouncers so they couldn't see or hear his lips moving. In a flash of movement the man lunged out at Ren; the speed and brutality of the man was terrifying, If he hadn’t been inebriated Ren would have been hit by his blow. Even discounting that Ren only just managed to evade the blow, placing a hand on the man’s wrist as it passed him and paralysing the man with a seal. ‘There was no way that would have worked if he wasn’t drunk’ Ren thought, a little shaken. Turning to the bouncer Ren put on his strongest smile. “Well that was close… I’m going to take him home and get him patched up” Ren said, pointing to the headband on his belt to show his authority. With a gentle nod Ren picked the man up and slung him over his shoulder before, with a sight stumble as he adjusted to the weight, and walked out the bar, placing his hand on the man’s head as he walked and extracted all the information he could from him, at first it was just basic combat information, mostly all muddled by the alcohol, however Ren found the location of the man’s home and started heading in that direction as he continued scanning his memories. ‘Huh, now this is interesting’ Ren thought as he examined the man’s thoughts, his brain flooded with complex mental formulas to do with space time teleportation and manipulation, whilst the knowledge was no doubt far less significant than Altar’s, Ren still found the influx of knowledge enlightening, and after he’d absorbed all of that Ren was happy to find in the man’s mind a complete break down of the Jounin exams.
Eventually reaching the man’s apartment Ren slipped a hand into the man’s pocket and pulled out the key, slipping it into the lock and letting the two into the dingy room. Placing the man on the ground Ren placed his hand back on his head and for the third time today overwrote a person’s mind to suit his wishes. Ren had a strange taste in his mouth from the act, but he shook it off, determined to walk this path and fix what was wrong with this village. Ren wiped today’s events from the man’s mind and replaced his personality ever so slightly with a few subtle tweaks. Ren hid a command to follow his orders of course, but then he included a desire to arrange for him and joan to both be unavailable for the exams. With that done Ren removed the paralysis seal and left the unconscious man to wake up in his own time.
Ren sat by the window of his office, brushing a strand of his silver white hair out of the way as he looked out at the white cloudy, misted, morning sky. A half forgotten cup of tea by his side and a simple black book in his hands. Today was the day… and Ren didn’t really know how to feel about it. He certainly had reason to be afraid, terrified even, the blood games were no laughing matter and although he and Yuri had survived their games without any casualties, but the recent blood games for which Ren had proctored had been… bloody to say the least. Ren had lost someone very special to him, and he was still coming to terms with the boy’s death. All the same, one way or another Ren was now committed to getting the boy vengeance for his death, and more importantly, making sure no one else suffered the same fate. But to do that Ren needed power, he needed to be stronger, he needed a higher rank in the village, and he needed the mizukage’s trust. For all these reasons and more Ren had decided that he needed to take the risk and involve himself in the jounin exams, or at least in what amounted to the kirigakure version of those exams. But Ren wasn't an idiot either, and he had no doubt these exams would… or at the very least could be far more bloodier than any of the games he had been involved in already. So ren had a plan that he’d been putting in place for a while now. Ren stood up and walked over to his bookcase, A large archaic wooden thing that ran from roof to floor and wall to wall, each wooden floor held up by hand carved pillars that ran through the supports and acted as opulent book ends, and began trailing his hand along the shelf until he came to a particular text… ‘let’s see, today’s key should be… this one’ Ren thought, pulling out a fine book leather bound book labeled “The art of Infused fuinjutsu” in a fine golden text. A satisfying click made itself known as the book, lifted up off of the bookcase, and the door swung open, this time revealing not a simple sitting room that he had so often been using for his private meetings, but rather a large research table fitted with a topographical map of the village of kirigakure no sato. On the walls were various blueprints of buildings and constructions hanging, pinned in place by invisible fuinjutsu seals; many of these were not of particular note for the time being, however one that Ren had acquired was of the old construction works for the arena when it had been built. Putting The art of infused fuinjutsu back in place, Ren stepped inside the room and shut the secret door behind him, Ren took out a piece of chalk from his pocket and re-drew his suppression seal, the same one that he’d covered all of his secret rooms in since their construction. He’d already memorised the maps he needed, and now all he needed to do was figure out to deal with his opponent's genjutsu. It wouldn't be an easy task normally, but Ren had an idea in mind; he’d spent the past few days drawing up the plans for a sigil that would mimic his own minds eye abilities, and amplify them, it wasn’t tested, but placing his hand over his arm Ren let the chakra flow into his arm and form a seal, this was followed by another and another, until all over his body were seals ready to activate at his command; and the final piece de resistance was his new test seal, designed to make him almost immune to genjutsu.
His preparations done Ren left his room, his office, and his academy and strode towards the Arena grounds, a confident spring in his stride, he knew what he was doing here, and he’d resolved himself to the conflict.
A few hours after Ren found himself in possession of a scroll and entering into the maze, his plan had gone off without a hitch, and all he had to do now was get to the other side of the maze he’d memorised. He had half a minute to get ahead of his proctor of course, but that was all he needed. As soon as the timer started Ren headed off in a sprint, rounding a corner and heading in the right direction; he dropped a confining barrier on the ground before pushing foreward only to have his proctor round the corner, calling out to him in a sing song voice. Ren’s vision blurred for a second before he felt a slight tingle as his experimental seal activated; breaking the genjutsu upon him. Ren turned to look at the man, only to see him kneeling down and looking at the barrier that Ren had trapped him in, “A good try little mouse, but a man as old as I doesnt get that way without picking up a few tricks” The man said with a wink before forming hand seals. ‘He’s going to try and break it’ Ren thought, recognising the seals for fuinjutsu breaking. It was a good strategy, but Ren had a plan. He cut his palm on a kunai and allowed a splash of his blood to hit the man and the seal as he whipped his arm out, forming a rapid flurry of hand seals of his own Ren dropped to the ground and channeled his chakra into the barrier, reinforcing its strength against his opponent through the blood, The man scowled as his technique failed, before turning to look at Ren, no doubt he would try a visual genjutsu since sound had failed the last time, but Ren was having none of it, he sprinted off to navigate the maze, his minds eye active the whole time as he did so, there were traps here and there of course, but Ren had memorised them all and made it to the end in record time, his proctor still trapped in the maze. A few hours later with a smile Ren left the arena and headed to the docks… he’d passed the first trial and now only had one thing between him and his immediate goal.
Ren stood upon the docks the strong salty air blowing against his face and causing his long flowing hair to billow behind him in the wind, as his ruffled shirt and fluttered around him. Ren took a deep breath as the he tried to organise his thoughts. Kira hadn't spoken to him since the Chunin exams, It would seem that all the chakra he had been expending of late had taken more of a toll on her than either of them had expected. Moreover the cost of improving the academy, coupled with the bribes he had paid to get some inside knowledge on the first part of the jounin exams, had eaten into his own pay, On the bright side, Ren felt he was well on his way to understanding the inner workings of the some incredibly advanced seal’s, he’d mastered the telepathy seal, which was an incredibly advanced technique and he’d even gone so far as been able to form a barrier seal upon himself to boot.
Having finished collecting his thoughts Ren turned from his position looking out to sea and walked down to one of the small boats that had been moored there, he wasn’t looking forward to this job, even if he could avoid using his chakra from what he had been briefed on this mission would likely require him to slaughter, what were once villagers, though from the descriptions he’d been given that was no longer the way to describe them. Not something Ren was unable to do, but definitely something he prefered to avoid doing whenever possible. Ren hadn’t always been this way, as he jumped off the pier and into a small rowboat he would grasp the oars and began rowing as he thought about his life, well his life since he joined the mist. Before the fall of old kiri, he had been a brat, or at least that’s what Ren would have called himself back then. He’d thought of himself as a loner always attempting to emulate the adults and their harsh brutal ways, he’d almost killed his classmates on numerous occasions and if it hadn’t been for namiko interfering then he would have definitely killed at least a few of them. It wasn't until the village was destroyed, and Namiko had died defending him and a few other genin that Ren had begun to realise what it meant to be a shinobi, or rather what it should mean.
Now the village was divided, the ideologies of the Mizukage was at odds with that of Ren and his compatriots. The ninja from the old village were still stuck in the thought patterns of old believing that they can survive and succeed by killing and destroying everything in their path, whether it be friend or foe, meanwhile Ren and his allies, knew that if this kept up there wouldn’t be a village hidden in the mist. Ren stopped for a moment to take a breather, he looked up only to realise that he had been rowing for well over an hour, his back muscles ached and the village could only be seen as a shadow on the horizon. In front of Ren stood an island dominated by a towering ominous mountain. ‘This is the place alright, whoever thought it was a good idea to settle on this island was insane’ Ren thought to himself as he sat in the boat looking out at the Island.
A stark rock rising out of the ocean, a dense mist or perhaps a fog surrounding the entire island and obstructing Rens view of the land.
Despite the obstruction Ren’s trained eyes began to meticulously scan the island; there was movement there, shadows moving in the fog, some seemed humanoid standing on two legs with horrifically elongated limbs whereas others looked almost animal like moving around on four legs with a horrific hunchback. Ren squinted trying to see through the fog as a bone chilling howl was heard echoing throughout the island and rolling out across the ocean to him ‘Damnit I Can’t see a thing here, If only I had eyes like the Second Mizukage’s legendary vision.’ It was just as the first howl began to fade that another sprung up, echoing across the ocean, followed by another, and then another. Rens blood ran cold at the next sound, a blood curdling scream flowing out across the sea. Ren was jumping off the boat and running across the ocean in an instant his feet pooling his chakra into them in order to help him run across the ocean towards the island; Ren in a hurry to find the source of the scream. It wasn’t until he reached the rocky outcrop that Ren saw the those same hunched figures their shadows now close enough to make out some distinguishing features, and those distinguishing features were terrifying; elongated arms that seemed to possess an extra joint trailed down tapering off into four monstrously long claws. Five of the horrifying figures were circling a hunched figure, a figure which appeared to be a woman lying on the ground, her leg clearly broken based upon the angle it was facing. The shadowy figure appeared to be attempting to fend off the advancing creatures with a stick, or perhaps a thin long blade.
Ren rushed forward, a split second decision that the life of this girl was worth the risk to his own life, Running towards the closest beast Ren would leap up at the last moment, delivering a debilitating kick into the weak point of the third limb there. Ren could feel just as much as he could hear a satisfying crack as the creature's leg caved in from the force; an even more satisfying yelp was heard from the creature that turned to snap at him, now that he was closer Ren could see the glistening white teeth, shaper that a wolf’s streaking towards him like the gates of hell looking to close upon his life. Ren kicked into the creature's leg harder, generating the force to push himself back from the creature and up over it, simultaneously evading the creature's jaws and giving him the momentum to move himself to land in front of the girl, protecting her from the creatures with his own body.
It was fortunate that he had done so in fact, that split second decision caused Ren to land in front of her just as one of the creatures leapt towards her, He heard a startled yelp of surprise from behind him as the girl was no doubt surprised to see a human figure appear in front of her just as she thought she was going to die. Ren held up his fist, pulling it back and stepping forward he assumed the arhat fist stance, throwing the full force of his momentum into the punch. As he stepped forward and to the side he slightly grazed past the jaws of the creature, another close shave with death before he let loose a punch straight into the neck of the creature, the force of the blow rippling through the creature's flesh and shattering the spinal vertebra causing the shards of bone to sever the creatures spinal cord, killing it in a matter of seconds. ‘Two down, three to go’ Ren thought to himself. Ren could feel two of the remaining three rushing towards him, his back was facing towards them and he couldn’t get into a position to strike them with his taijutsu in time. ‘Damnit all, this is exactly why I didn’t want to take this mission, I don't know how strong those jaws are but they look like they could sever me in two in one bite if they got a hold of me; I can’t risk relying on the barrier seal, it's not tested against these creatures, and it's more likely to fail on me than actually hold’ Ren thought as he surveyed his surroundings. Ren sighed internally ‘not even ten minutes into this mission and I’m already being forced to exert my chakra.’ Ren turned his hand to face behind him and released the Dark River breaking seal on his hand. A brilliant string of chakra enhanced bolts flew out from his hand, each one of them striking the two creatures in mid air as they flew towards him. Though Ren couldn't see it the sounds of his chakra bolts hitting the creatures told him exactly what was happening. First the sounds told of flesh being pierced, a squelching sound as the bolts penetrated the outer flesh of their epidermis and dug into their vital points. The next sound was the quiet crack of bones breaking, ‘Was that a rib?’ Ren thought for a moment before he heard the gurgling of blood pooling translated in his mind ‘I hit a lung’ meanwhile a loud thump that sounded like a limp body told him that he’d either hit the other creature with far more force than he thought, or he’d pierced its skull and destroyed its brain. Ren smiled, feeling the adrenaline really start to take hold as only one of his opponents, the creatures, things, whatever they were, was left.
The creature backed away to retreat and Ren bent down, ready to dash forward and crush the creature, but he heard howls in the distance, the sound of other potential threats brought him back to his senses, he wasn't afraid for himself, at this point he was confidant that he was more than capable of protecting himself, Ren was however afraid he would endanger the woman lying behind him, sword still pointed at him, though whether it was in shock or genuine fear Ren couldn’t tell. Ren didn’t move until the shadow of the creature had disappeared from view, much as he expected the creature doubled back and lurked in the fog for a short while, no doubt hoping that he would turn his back too it. Ren was staring down the shadow in the fog as he heard a voice behind him, quiet and panicked yet somehow speaking in childish melodies “W-Who… What are you” the beautiful voice whispered the shock evident in her voice. Ren smirked for a moment before putting on a fake bluster, portraying confidence he certainly didnt feel himself. “I’m a chunin of Kirigakure, and you are” The woman blinked, clearly still in a state of shock. “A-aisha” She said, still confused. “Well Aisha, this is clearly not a safe place, why don’t you go down that cliff and take my boat out far enough these creatures can’t get you, I’ll come find you when I’m done here and we’ll head back to the village together?” Ren said with a show of fake confidence. “I-” The woman paused, “Okay, but please sir, my brother is out there find him for me and aid him” The woman said, it was an odd way to phrase it but Ren nodded to her all the same, “Very well, I’ll find your brother and return to you” Ren said, before walking off in the direction the creatures left.
Ren headed through the forest, his mind mainly on finishing this trial, although he was also concerned about that young girl’s brother. Occasionally he saw the shadow of one of the creatures, but after their last battle they left him alone. He knew there was an old village around here somewhere, it hadn’t been heard from for a while of course but that was normal considering most things on this island died, just as he was about to give up Ren stumble upon an old dirt road, no doubt the path to the island’s village.
The once busy road that led to the village was barely more than a dirt path now and covered in shrubs and small bushes. Gardens once looked after and trimmed to perfection were now rough and overgrown, returning back to their naturally chaotic state. Some doors were shut tightly, others were broken down. Some, it seemed, forcefully, others had simply collapsed under their own weight as the elements continued to eat away at them. Dry rot, vines and other undesired vegetation had taken the place of paint on most buildings and created their own kind of decoration.
This village had once been a growing community of hundreds of families was now but a hollow shell of its former self. The wind in the trees and the creaking of wood were the new dominant sounds in a once lively community rich in sounds of joy and simple pleasures.
Noble men and women were once called upon from the local barracks, ready to save whoever needed saving. Unfortunately this town couldn't be saved. Funnily enough it was now mostly birds that had made this place their home.
Despite the many animals that inhabit this town it was still a very unsettling sight to behold. Nature had taken its toll on the vast majority of town. But with nothing else to lose this town had a strange sense of comfort about it. Like a world of opportunity, except there was nobody there to take it.
As Ren walked down the decrepit street he observed the buildings around him, one in particular caught his eye; from the outside the house looked gorgeous, or at least it did in its time. It had been built with brown bricks and has granite decorations running all along the building. Tall, wide windows added to the overall look of the house and seem to have been added to the house in a fairly asymmetrical pattern.
Walking passed it Ren could see a massive half moon hole in the wall, scorch marks all around it as if a great heat had burned open the gash in the building. Through the hole Ren could see what remained of the building. The house was equipped with a large kitchen and three bathrooms, the piping of the two upstairs bathrooms hung down into what was once the kitchen, the walls and support beams lay scattered all throughout the remnants of the decrepit destroyed building.
Past the kitchen Ren could also see what was once a snug living room, the comfortable couches now clearly rotted away, one of them stained with the coppery colour that clearly indicated blood had been shed upon it; and from the size of the stain it was a lot of blood. ‘What happened here?’ Ren found himself thinking to himself. As he walked to the end of the street he found himself taking a turn off and walking around the building further, examining it closer. The building had been shaped in a short U shape, from the front Ren couldn't tell as easily but the building was much larger than it seemed; The two extensions extend into glass overhanging panels to each side whilst a smaller second floor, smaller than the first that is, allowed for a large balcony on the rear side of the house between the two prongs of the U shape. The building’s roof was high and triangular, but one side was longer than the other creating an odd slant from the grey roof tiles that covered the roof. Two small chimneys sat at either side of the house and several small windows let in just enough light to the rooms below the roof that you could see the shadows of broken furniture. The house itself was surrounded by what was once a gorgeous garden, and yet now it was overgrown by nature much as the rest of the town was. At the back of the building Ren saw an exterior basement entrance, the fine laqured wooden doors
Glancing at one of the rear windows of the building Ren blinked, checking his eyes; ‘That's strange, I swear I could see what looked like a young child there for a moment… but that's preposterous, there’s no way a child could survive out here… ‘What was that?’ A flash of black in his peripheral vision was the only warning Ren got to activate his Fuin barrier before the thing behind him hit him at full force, tossing Ren twenty meters away as he rolled only to come up standing and looking at misshapen figure wreathed in a black cloak, long scissor like blades dangling from underneath its cloak in one hand, and what looked like a sword in the other. Ren had a pair of kunai in his hands in an instant and threw one at the creature as he rushed forward, another one flying into his hand at lightning speed.
The creature, in a display of supernatural reflexes knocked the flying blade out of the air with a clang as it collided with his own claw like blades before the two of them came together., Clang, clang, clang! the blades clashed again and again; the two of them embroiled in deadly combat; who was this mysterious individual, how had they managed to find him out here in the wilderness; perhaps most importantly of all, how were they so skilled, so quick with their blades. These thoughts and many more all flashed through Ren’s mind as he lept backwards; narrowly dodging a blow from the figures blades… or so he thought, a gust of terribly powerful wind sliced open a gash in his face as he narrowly dodged a deadly slash. ‘What was that? A wind technique?’ Ren thought ‘No that can’t be it there was no wind around the cut… this is insane.’ Ren thought darting back as far as he could go “Who are you stranger; give me your name and perhaps we can work this out in a civilised manner.” Ren called out; attempting to keep a non-threatening posture as he spoke… Or at least he would have if the man didn’t immediately rush forward; raising their blades into an unusual stance as they did so. Ren lifted up his Kunai to a classical guard and forced himself to move forward to meet the man; if this kept up he would no doubt find himself cornered against some decrepit building. Retreating and negotiations would clearly do him no good; but he hadn’t been raised by foxes for nothing. Rushing forward to meet the man in combat once more Ren clashed with him blade for blade; his eyes watching for any indication on what the man would do next. A swing of his sword was countered by a block from Ren’s kunai, a counter blow from Ren’s fist was caught by the man; his reflexes clearly beyond that of even the superhuman reactions that ren was capable of performing. Click ‘what was that?’ Craakck, ‘Oh dear’ Throwing himself to the side and using the man’s hold on his fist Ren through himself to the side; swinging around the man and pulling him over a slight amount as ren dodged the man’s sword, the shards of his shattered kunai flying all around him; a single piece cutting the side of his face as he did so. ‘Not good’ Ren thought as he pulled out another one of his kunai and took a swing at the man’s hand, trying to get him to let go; instead the man twisted his body and released his hold on Ren; sending the boy flying into a nearby building. *Crash Crack Bang; The world spun as Ren found himself lying in a wall… the outside of a building…. The world was spinning, and his vision was blury what was he… ‘ugh get up, get up get up get up!’ Ren forced himself up as he tried to take note of his surroundings. That… that was a hole before him; he’d been thrown through the building and into the one behind it. *CRACK* oh, building wouldn’t be acurate anymore would it? Ren thought as the building collapsed in on itself. “Jesus Christ what is this man… no this demon made off; I dont even know how I survive… It hit him all at once; that brief moment of respite that he had used to survey the area was enough for the adrenaline to slow… a pain in his stomach; Looking down Ren saw a shard of timber peircing his abdoment; his medical knowledge kicked in, that was going to make eating a problem for a whi… oh… that hurts… that really…’ Ren’s vision began fading, ‘No! Dont faint, you faint and your dead… but that pain’ Ren thrust his hand into the wound; a brief flicker of fire on his hands before the pain began to ease. ‘Right; youve got this, no dying today now where’d he go?' Ren thought, looking up only to see the man walking through the destroyed building towards him. ‘Yeah thats right you smug bastard; just you wait I’m going to enjoy killing you’ ‘Ren thought, surprised at his own ferocity, ‘where did that come from?’ I’ve not experienced that sort of bloodlust since… since I was a kid.’ Ren’s mind began to wander back to that day when he’d lost his family for the second time only to… No not now, Ren needed to focus. It was the anesthetic of course, it let Ren keep fighting but it also made him sloppy, made it hard to focus. With a deep breath Ren darted forward towards the man; a faint but desperate times called for desperate measures, pulling out his third kunai, Ren had no idea where the second one had ended up, no doubt lost in that wreckage or destroyed by this man’s absurd power. “If I’m going I’m taking you with me you bastard! Ren called out, moving as if to try and cut the man with a fully frontal attack; at the last moment; just before Ren moved within the man’s reach he threw the blade, and immediately dropped to the ground; sliding forward through momentum alone as he forced his palm to flatten out. If the man looked at his hand he’d be caught in a genjutsu; even if he wasn’t caught in the genjutsu he’d still need to look at the kunai in order to block it, and even then Ren had the river breaking seal which had just begun to activate. A simple trick; a surprisingly easy one too. But the simplest tricks were sometimes the ones that worked best, and this was Ren’s coup de grace… or it would be. The man shifted his head; uncovering just a glimpse under his hood to reveal a skull masked face, like that of the creatures Ren had faught earlier, as he brought his blade crashing down, cutting the kunai in two; if it wasn’t for Ren releasing all five of his bolts in the direction of the blade at the last second Ren wouldn't have even survived. ‘What in the world? He looked at my hand, I know he did. He’s got the Reflexes of a god, the speed to match one and on top of all of that he’s immune to genjutsu?’ Insanity; that was the word for it, Ren Grinned maniacally as the insanity took hold. All thought of death were shoved aside by that black illogical force, ‘Kill or be killed that is the rule of this world, never forget that’ Ren thought to himself, ‘protecting the innocent, the young, the infirm, protecting those you love, those you admire, those that you teach, what good is that if you die yourself?’ Re...Ren thought those things? ‘That can't be right’ Ren thought to himself. Shhh, the sound of a blade whistling through the air broke Ren out of his doubt. Yes kill or be killed that was all he needed remember for now. Leaning back so far he felt like his spine would break Ren managed to dodge the blade by a hair's breadth, a desperate plan forming in his mind, Ren danced with death, retreating backwards as he evaded the thing’s blades, after all this couldn't really be called a man anymore, as he retreated into the remnants of the large manor he’d seen earlier. The man followed him, and that was all Ren needed to finish this, the two of them ended up in the kitchen, right below the last support beam, darting backwards Ren released another wave of force as he hit the beam with everything he had, at the same time flickering himself to collide with the buildings window, the shards of glass shattering outwards just as the building dropped on the thing; but Ren wasn’t done there, placing his hand on the wooden remains of the structure Ren channeled all he could remember of creating fire from chakra to the forefront of his mind; releasing sputtering burst after burst into the wood and kindling a reaction that set the buildings remains ablaze. “See you in hell!” Ren said, sitting down and pulling lose that splinter of wood from his body and forming the hand seals to heal his wounds, just as he was about to allow himself respite Ren heard a bloodcurdling scream as the burning wooden beams shifted and broke; a monstrous figure of flaming rotting flesh rearing up from the beams, ‘so that is a greater wendigo’ Ren though, realising now what he’d been fighting all this time, and there in its ribcage Ren could see the body of a young boy, no doubt that girl’s brother, his body already well into being integrated into that of the wendigo; his body being suspended by clumps of muscle fiber and his own body already withered and rotting. Just as he was about to try and escape, the rear of the building; its own supports now being weakened by fire and buckling under the strain, broke with a thundering crack! The entire second floor falling on the creature, this time its lower body being crushed and trapped, whilst the force of the wind from the occurrence blew out enough of the flames to make a path for Ren“Just what I needed” Ren sighed in relief as he stood up and limped over to the creature, it still hurt to move and no doubt he’d need some more medical attention when he got back to the village. Bending over Ren took his last kunai to the beast’s neck and sawed through the flesh of the creature, granting him the head of a greater wendigo to seal away and take back as proof of his achievement.
Ren made it back to the boat safe and sound; Aisha wasn’t happy to hear of her brother’s demise, but she was surprisingly grateful to Ren for putting him out of his misery. On the long boat ride back, as Ren grinned and bore the pain of his wounds, steering the boat and ensuring the two of them made it back safely, Aisha opened up a little, speaking again. “I think I knew deep down that it was already too late for him, I think really I was going there to try and do just what you did, put him out of his misery and that mockery of life that he had become, thank you for that.” She said, wiping away the tears in her eyes as she spoke. Ren stopped for a moment and gave her a calming smile, “I know it hurts to lose someone so close to you, I know its hard, but take it step by step okay, your friends will stand beside you, being there if you need them, and I’ll be there if you need me as well.” Ren said, pleased to see the woman’s face brighten a little at his words.
The two of them spent the rest of the trip back exchanging stories of their childhood, the good the bad and the ugly parts of them; She was one of the first people Ren had realy spoken to about the battle of old kiri, and certainly the first person he’d told about his time before being saved by Namiko. Surprisingly her and her now unfortunately deceased brother were both from the same region originally, as their conversation came to an end the two of them came into the docks of the village, Ren bid the young girl good bye and wished her well as he turned and strode towards the group of examiners that were waiting for him off to one side. “Well, did you kill one of the beasts?” one of the men of to the side asked. With a slight grimace Ren opened a scroll and released the trophy he had taken from the island. Ren was rather confused by the shocked faces of the men there. “Surely you’ve seen one before if your examiners?” Ren said aloud when they stood there for a good half a minute. “That… Ren, that’s not a greater wendigo.” Ren’s face dropped a little until he heard the man’s following words, “thats a wendigo Alpha, I’ve only seen 3 of them in my life, and i’ve never known anyone who’s slain one except perhaps the mizukage, You pass with no doubts my boy! Now go get some rest, you can have your induction ceremony tomorrow” The man said, as Ren finally collapsed under the strain of his wounds, blacking out.

(OOC: discussed with staff and doing a npc opponent for this)
Ren found himself in possession of a scroll and standing at the entrance into the maze, his plan had gone off without a hitch, and all he had to do now was get to the other side of the maze he’d memorised. Behind him stood his proctor, a grizzled old man who would be his opponent for this section of the exams; Ren had half a minute's head start to get ahead of his proctor of course, but that was all he needed. As soon as the timer started Ren headed off in a sprint, down the long corridor until he reached the cross roads at the end, one road went left and the other went right, counting internally, '15 seconds left' Ren through his hands together and caused a deep mist to obscure himself and the pathways, the billowing mass of clouds heading left and right down the hallways as well as heading back towards the entrance for ten meters. Following this Ren turned right, his memorization of the tunnels paying off already as the left hand turn leat to a hidden spike pit before looping around and coming to a dead end, three meters down the hall and with his time already up Ren threw another quick flurry of hand seals and placed a seal of pure chakra upon the ground, the barrier covering 5 meters down the hallway and the entirety of the passage from left to right, before turning and continuing back down the 20 meter hallway and taking the next left hand turn.

Stats of opponent
The proctor watched as the hallway filled with mist and a surge of chakra left the chuunin running through the maze. It was evident the ninja had used a technique, but which was unknown. As the timer reached zero, the B-rank would for seals for wind style: wind rejuvenation. His opponent was quick and seemed like a runner from what he could tell of the mist billowing through the area.
As the ninja moved speed 55, he would come across a space that was difficult to move through but he made it through (Chakra 110). The ninja would pull out a kunai holding it within his hand while slapping a paper bomb on the end of it. As he got to the other end of the barrier he would feel the same force trying to prevent him, but would get through anyway. I’m guessing that was the jutsu she/he used.
The jounin of Kiri would track his target through the maze using his increased speed. If it seemed Ren was still gaining distance, the Kiri ninja would have to flicker to him/her. So, far the chuunin was doing pretty well to prevent the proctor from following using mist to cover the corridors but as a jounin proctoring these exams he had learned the paths inside and out.

Ren sensed the proctor's chakra surge to far higher levels than it was at before; 'No doubt he's using a technique to push his body above normal levels, well either way my barrier should... damnit' Ren thought as he sensed the man moving through his barrier, and begin closing on him, although he was still in the mist at this point; with a subtle sigh Ren pulled out a pair of kunai, one with an explosive tag attached whilst the other was a regular blade, and rounded the corner, forming a handseal Ren body flickered to the end of the 50 meter corridor, over one of the traps that he'd had to plan around, and landed at the end of the corridor with two passage's to his left and right, it was at this point that Ren turned and watched the entrance to the corridor and waited for his opponent to enter.

The proctor moved down the hallway taking note as there was a large spike in his targets chakra, before it went away with incredible speed. It almost felt as if Ren’s chakra had disappeared, but it had only gone ahead quite a bit and seemed to completely stop. It seemed either the ninja was tired of running or was confused by the pattern of the maze, either way a small skirmish or the end of the exams was about to happen. Unless, this was a clone of some sort.
As the jounin passed the trap and avoided it, he would look forward down the hall waiting for the ambush coming from the chuunin in the maze. He would continue to move speed 110 until he caught sight of Ren or the other ninja did something to provoke a reaction from the proctor.

Watching the proctor round the corner, 'Damn he's fast' Ren thought, reaching up his hand and channeling chakra into it, a black seal appearing there as he fired a barrage of chakra bolts towards the proctor, the first one heading directly towards him whilst the next two were aimed slightly in front of where he would be when the first bolt would hit, hitting the two wall panel's each one of which was a trigger to activate that activated the trap for the hallway, opening up the flooring along the hallway right up to just before Ren was standing and revealing a crocodile filled pit. Assuming those bolts hit that is; of course if anything changed or the proctor evaded his attack then Ren would adjust his actions accordingly

As the chakra bolts went towards the trap the jounin jumped to the wall (speed 110) of the maze using the surface walking technique. The proctor watched as the floor gave out and revealed a pool full of hungry crocodiles. While the proctor had known what was underneath, it was amazing that this chuunin had not only avoided the trap but used it to his advantage. The jounin now on the wall would also, be able to avoid the bolt that had been targeting him from his previous position.
The proctor would light the fuse on the kunai with his chakra, he would then form a ram seal at 110 speed and body flicker 10M’s past Ren going to the side of him. He would then throw the kunai (Speed 150) down the path that would lead to the exit and as it became stuck in the wall he would cause it to explode far enough from himself and Ren that they would not be hurt. As the tag exploded it would cause rubble to fall and prevent an easy escape. There was still enough room to wiggle through, but it would leave anyone trying that vulnerable to attack. “Well time to see what you’ve got.”

Seeing the proctor jump to the side, evading his attack and the trap below Ren conceded that he'd done all he needed to here; after all, all he had to do here was delay his proctor and reach the end of the maze with his scroll intact; Forming a hand seal at the same time as his proctor Ren body flickered to his left, down the path that lead towards the end of the maze, another 60 meters down the corridor Ren found himself standing in the center of a circular room with five exits spaced evenly apart. Ren quickly formed a hand seal and allowed mist to form in the room, covering it and allowing Ren to rush down the nearest corridor undetected, and placed his hand on the ground, allowing a seal to appear there imbued with his power and suppressing his presence, whilst he monitored the chakra presence of his target, its effects extending to just a meter radius and never entering the room at any point.

As the proctor moved to the position Ren had been in he decided to throw the kunai with the lit paper bomb behind him instead. It seemed that Ren decided it was best to continue running. With the bomb going off in his hand no longer a worry the proctor would move ahead into the hallway. With the mist in the tunnels it was difficult to see, but it was obvious at this point that Ren had figured out the maze. The jounin moved through the mist carefully (speed 70) Arriving within the round room with five exits.
Got the layout from somewhere that’s a good idea. It was customary to cheat during such events even during written exams for chuunin, questions too difficult for genin to understand were given. A few chuunin would be placed into the exams posing as genin and write down the correct answers. The genin were then supposed to get the answers from the imposters without getting caught by the proctor. So, this was similar as long as you weren’t caught anything was okay. The mist seemed to originate from this room as it was the most densely concentrated.
The jounin would look around, if nothing was in sight the proctor would take the path leading to the exit. Ren was either already ahead or was in the wrong path. Either way the ninja was either already here or have to come here. The proctor suspected that the chuunin knew the correct path.
