Mission:

There comes a point in the life of everyone where they must step up and assume responsibility. Today was that day. Albeit not quite the exact responsibility that our young protagonist was searching for and not near as meaningful as he wanted, however.

Damon was headed out to the town. In fact, he was headed towards the mission center. A local priest had been kind enough to offer him a place to stay, and the strapping young lad wished to return the favor to all of the citizens of the City Blessed by the Stars. He was in a rather generous mood today and wished to help out in a way that he deemed fit. Descending from the second floor of the cathedral, where his quarters were located, Damon headed down the staircase, which was off to the side. Before he even reached the bottom, he could tell that Saishi the priest was awake. Dreadful, off key sounds echoed throughout the open space as he attempted to master the difficult instrument of the organ, emphasis on the attempted part. He decided best to leave him be. Heading towards the door, the Uchiha exited the grey, gothic cathedral and headed out to roam the streets.

Chirp chirp chirp. Birds sang their song in the trees overhead that lined the walkways to the sides of the roads. Damon did not particularly mind the sound as he enjoyed the sound of chirping. Especially a thousand chirps at once. He looked down towards his hands, which were slightly marred with abrasions from hitting a tree, as well as his experience hitting trees with chidori. Wow, one must think that he had an unrelenting hatred for nature itself. He recalled how fast he seemed to move when using chidori. A lot faster than he was able to at that time. Maybe there was a way to increase his speed using lightning chakra that would not cause him to tear up the streets and create a danger to the nice citizens of Hoshigakure. After all, he was going to help them today, not try to kill them. He had touched upon the technique during his training with Akemi the other day. Damon then decided to crouch down in the stance that a runner is often seen doing before he takes off. Leaning over and pressing his fingertips to the ground, Damon brought his left leg forward and bent his knee heavily. His nicely defined bottom was sticking up in the air, as the stance called for. Damon imagined the lightning nature inside of him coursing through his veins. His body seemed to reach a new high as his strength and speed sharply increased. Lightning seemed to began to flicker around him as a light blue aura surrounded his body. He used his fingertips to seemingly pull forward on the ground beneath him, kicking off of the stone to start into a sprint.

Darting through the village streets, Damon seemed to pick up on the technique fairly easily, as the new piercing that he had bought with mission funds had also helped to even further his speed as he ran towards the mission board to see what he would be able to do for the day. His fortuitous training session with Akemi had first started the path to unlocking this technique. When he had been teaching the scarfed social recluse how to hone his chakra in order to manifest it into lightning natured chakra, Damon had noticed that his own lightning nature seemed to be manifesting itself externally. As a result, his speed was greatly increased, albeit only for the duration of the technique. Continuing his run through the streets of the City Blessed by the Stars, Damon felt as though he was not running. No, rather he was thrown almost as if he was a javelin made of lightning or something. With his improved speed, it did not take him long to reach the mission center. Upon reaching the doors, his blue aura would fade, reducing him back to his regular speed as he slowed to a walking pace.

Knowing that the higher ranked missions were usually reserved for more important tasks and often involving foreigners, Damon instead decided to check the D rank mission pile. These were usually reserved for the villagers and tasks concerning the village itself, from groundskeeping to guarding to… teaching? Sure enough at the top of the pile was a hastily filed report asking for a substitute teacher. This would not be the most rewarding experience. However, it seemed to be very urgent, and there was no telling when another shinobi would enter the mission center. This was not the components of legends. And then it clicked. While this may not further his own standings among the legendary shinobi of the world, it would be a cool story if one of these students grew up and was able to say that Damon the Insert Some Fancy Title Here was his teacher once upon a time. Clutching the mission paper in his hand, he darted outside of the mission center towards the classrooms, surrounded by a blue aura. The receptionist looked up from her desk and simply made a note. “Kids these days.”

The school house was composed of simple white colored walls complete with a wooden accessory. Nothing fancy, in fact, it was rather plain in comparison to the plethora of intricately designed temples and churches. Damon stepped into the building, not entirely sure as to where to go. Thank God or gods or whatever supernatural force that the Hoshi citizens worshipped that there was a receptionist. He hurriedly approached her desk. “Hi, how are you today. I’m here for the substitution spot.” She looked him over before noticing the headband strapped to his bicep. Guess that was the only qualification they needed to see on such short notice. It was not like he was trying to apply for a full time job. “Head down the hallway to your left. It will be classroom 34B.” She gave him a generic smile before he thanked her and headed down the hallway. Upon opening the sliding door, he was met with stares from the class as well as the thankful expression of the man at the front.

“Okay, class,” the regular teacher said as he addressed the entirety of the classroom. “I need to leave immediately.” He sounded as though she was in a hurry. That was why he was called in, after all, Mr. … It occurred to him that he did not actually know his name. Whoops. Anyways, he had an emergency situation that needed taking care of, and Damon just happened to be one of the nearest shinobi that was able to substitute. Blah blah blah, the teacher gave a perfectly valid reason to leave that Damon did not catch, seeing as that he was too busy looking over the class in order to get a feel for them. For example, this one kid with spiky black hair and his buddy with white hair seemed a bit off; they were probably the trouble makers in the class. A red haired girl was swooning over a blonde haired boy who was completely clueless concerning the entire affair. The rest of the class seemed rather average, what with various hairstyles, eye and skin colors, etc. Just nothing that particularly stood out. With that the teacher hurried out the door in pursuit of whatever.

“Erhm, okay class,” Damon addressed the silent room. “What are you guys currently learning?” And nobody responded. “Okay then.” He opened the teacher’s copy of whatever book they had. These kids ARE the next generation of ninja here in Hoshigakure. Maybe they should get a head start… “Class, you’re going to be practicing the clone technique. The handseals are Ram → Snake → Tiger.” While he said this, Damon then signed it as well, producing a false clone that had no depth. “Some of you guys won’t be able to do this naturally and that’s okay. Just practice while,” the sound of a stomach rumbling, “I go to the bathroom really quickly.” He had not thought to go before, as he did not really expect to be left in charge of some 20 academy students. Damon headed out the door, a blue aura flickering around him as his boosted speed allowed him to use the lavatories in a speedy manner. Wow this was weird to think about.

Five minutes later. “Guys, you need to settle down.” Oh dear God what had happened. Damon attempted to calm the rowdy class full of young boys and girls, only to have his voice drowned out by rather high pitched screams and screeching of children who believed that they were unattended. He was literally only gone for a moment. There had only been 20 kids before, but now there were around 37. This class must have been full of prodigies who had already learned how to channel their chakra for the basic technique. It also seemed as though they took his limited age advantage over them as an indicator that he had no authority. They appeared to be too young to truly comprehend, or at least ignoring the idea that those placed under authority of a shinobi of a higher rank need to respect the wishes of that particular shinobi. Damon noticed the spiky black hair and white haired boys trying and failing to stealthily head towards the door in order to presumably sneak out. He rushed over, trying to channel his lightning chakra nature to give him a boost. A very faint blue glow surrounded him as his speed was increased and he headed towards the door, pulling it shut once they arrived. No harm is to come to the children while they are in your care. The words of the mission assignment echoed in his head, reminding him to stay collected and keep a calm demeanor. “Go sit down.” He was forced to make his voice more commanding than he preferred, but it seemed to be the only way to compel children to listen and behave. And the only way to get them to pay attention seemed to be to do something flashy. Damon held his hands up to his chest and signed the chain of handseals for his flashiest technique. Still imbued with his own lightning chakra manifesting itself into a blue aura that made his handseals even faster than usual. He completed the handseal chain that consisted of Ox → Rabbit → Monkey or Monkey → Dragon → Rat → Bird → Ox → Snake → Dog → Tiger → Monkey in what must have been in the blink of an eye to the children. They would not have been half as fast as him and probably could not even keep up with him.

“CHIDORI!”

What was quickly becoming his all time favorite technique was also a loud way to gather their short attention spans. Damon would wait until all eyes were on him before deactivating the technique. “Okay.” He looked around the room. “Now please turn your textbooks to whatever page you were on before your normal instructor left. What are we going to cover today?” The room was silent, probably awe struck by such a flashy technique. “If nobody says anything, I’m going to assign you all homework.” That got their attention. Suddenly, most hands in the room were raised. Finally. The shinobi had finally learned how to gain control over a class, even if it was rather unorthodox. Luckily, this was a shinobi academy, otherwise he might as well have signed off his own death certificate for daring to practice ninjutsu in front of common folk. He was still unsure as to why the citizens hated shinobi, but was still dealing with it nonetheless. “Let’s try the clone technique again. You all are going to be the next generation of ninja here! One day, one of you might be in my position right now.” The day would continue rather smoothly as Damon  managed to successfully teach the class one of the most basic techniques, thus allowing future ninja to arise at a slightly faster rate. Maybe he should look into teaching one day.
