A Job for a Guy with a Strong Nose (IO)
Sun Jul 23, 2017 1:05 am
As the sun began to rise of Hoshigakure’s horizon, Yurei stirred in his sleep. The blazing orange fireball projected its light onto the tan-colored city, forming massive shadows and darkening the sides of buildings that faced away from its blinding light. Slowly, the orange glow peered into Yurei’s cold room, thawing out his floorboards and beckoning his eyes to open. The genin’s eyes fluttered open, meeting with the sun’s bright glow. The Uchiha stretched his arms, and yawned. Today, he was to prepare a grand breakfast for his mother. The Uchiha closed his eyes and raised his eyebrows, giving them a good stretch. He then leaned upward and stared out of his window in order to get a glimpse of the beautiful sunrise.
The pale genin quickly shifted his body out of his bed and launched onto the wooden floor below. His mother wouldn’t be asleep for long if she wasn’t already up, so he had to hurry. The Uchiha quickly wrapped his kimono over his body, placing his arms in the silk sleeves. He reached for his headband, freshly washed and rid of that horrible sweat smell, and tied it firmly around his forehead. The boy slid open his slider door and tiptoed through the hall, finding his mother’s door open. He quickly snuck around it, headed for the kitchen. The boy swiftly retrieved the required pans, only to discover that his mom had entered the kitchen prematurely.
“What are you up to?” she asked playfully, though something seemed wrong.
Yurei rubbed the back of his head. “Well, uh, I was going to make you breakfast,” Yurei replied with a bright smile.
Takia smiled thinly, not putting forth much effort. Her skin was whiter than usual. “That’s very kind of you, Yurei. But I’m not feeling too well, right now, so I’m not hungry. I’m so sorry.”
Yurei’s smile faded into a slight frown. “Are you ok?” he asked.
“Just a bit of nausea, nothing too bad. I don’t want you getting to close, though. Especially with your exams coming up.” Takia said in return, covering her mouth.
Yurei was unnoticeably upset, instead smiling, but he understood the circumstances and was, to a degree, saddened. The boy nodded, and Takia slowly went back to bed.
The pale Uchiha sighed, putting away his pots and pans. “If anything else,” he said, putting the items away, “I can learn that new genjutsu.” The boy closed the cabinents and returned to his room where he gathered his weapon pouches. The boy scoured his abode in search of that scroll, the Flash Pillar one. Yurei pulled open every drawer and looked in every nook and cranny in search of the scroll. He maneuvered to his nightstand and got on the floor, reaching beneath it and feeling around the dusty space until he came to the feeling of old, dried parchment. There!
The Uchiha quickly yanked the scroll from the dark shade and blew on it, removing the heap of dust. Yurei quickly unraveled the scroll and read it, if only to identify the jutsu. The Flash Pillar Jutsu. The Uchiha smiled at his success and quickly ran outside, leaving his mother to heal.
Outside of his house, Yurei went on reading the scroll and walking. The Jutsu itself was interesting. Kind of like a two-in-one. It both blinded a target and trapped them in a genjutsu. This was an easy way to overload their senses, and it housed a particularly strong ability against shinobi, and boar, snake, horse, and, lastly, tiger, were the only handseals required of it. Yurei recognized its potential, immediately reciting the handseals allowed and trying to memorize them as he moved along the housing district.
When Yurei finally came to the city square, it lacked the busy nature that it usually possessed. Instead, there was a group of people with little activity other than staring at something a murmuring. Yurei squinted his eyes, placing his scroll within his belt. The Uchiha ran over to the ground, worming his way through the group, until he came upon a corpse. Initially shaken, Yurei cautiously walked further. A few medical shinobi were present, but it appeared recent as they had not gotten situated just yet.

An inuzuka’s ears and nose were the most reliable form of ears and nose a human could possibly possess. In his day to day life, akio would be reminded of that over and over again, things like games of hide and seek had always come easy to him, he could sniff his opponents out if he found himself anywhere near them. But sometime’s the nose was just good for catching the scent of a friend and letting you know that they’re around.
That was the case of today as the young inuzuka boy made his way down dirt roads on the way back to his house, he carried two sticks of dumplings in his hand, one for himself and another for the black german shepherd beside him, as he picked the scent of Yurei out of the crowd however his desired destination would change from his house to the pale skinned uchiha.
Together the dog and him would do a 180 and begin to head down an alleyway, in an attempt to get closer to the scent, as they ran Akio would lower the dumplings in his right hand level to Esu’s snout so that the dog could eat on the way.
When the two arrived at the cluster of civilians around what appeared to be a crime scene no dumblings would remain in the man’s hand, as he and the dog had quickly finished them off. Pushing through the crowd the scent would grow stronger and stronger, and Akio began to grow worried that he’d find yurei’s corpse in the center.
“Should I have made sure he was stable after that funeral?” He’d ask himself in his own head before the worry subsided, this was due to the fact that he had found his friend standing mere feet from the corpse.
“What’s going on, what happened here?” He’d ask his friend as he watched the medical shinobi setting up their supplies. As he asked the question he’d pull his headband out of his pocket, opting not have worn it while shopping for food, but deciding now was an appropriate time to put it on.

Yurei quickly turned to Akio with a thin smile. His father’s funeral had been quite some time from now, allowing Yurei the time he needed to move on, at least in a way that didn’t include overbearing sadness. Instead, his father’s death served as a reminder of his mistakes, but also of his ambitions and goals. His father died a rightfully angry protector of his family, but the pale Uchiha was fixated on proving his father wrong and earning back what he had lost.
Yurei’s eye were cut in a serious shape, but he was not upset. Typically, the boy would be bright and happy, but few people could look at a corpse and retain that feeling. “Good to see you, Akio,” Yurei said. He rose from his crouched position. “Well, there’s been a murder,” he replied, shaking his head. “The Medical Corp hasn’t given me any details, but I’m supposed to investigate it since no other shinobi are available.” The albino eyed Akio’s nose, thinking. “Hey, with that nose of yours, maybe you could help out? See if you can get a scent on the guy. Some of his clothing was torn off.”
A medical shinobi walked over to the two boys, dressed in all white. His face was fair, and his blonde hair was shaggy, draping over his headband wildly. “You two,” he said, his voice firm and alter. “We’ve determined the cause of death. His heart has exploded. We’re dealing with a rogue taijutsu specialist.”
Yurei cocked an eyebrow. “Taijutsu? So he must be lacking in chakra. This should be easy. Akio, I need you to come with me. See if you can pick up a scent on the guy. Once we find him I can trap him inside my new genjutsu. You and Esu should be able to take him down from there.”
The Uchiha was more of an idealist than a tactical person, but he was not lacking in the field. Yurei had formulated many plans early in his shinobi career to avoid being caught by his parents or any of the radicals. That had changed now, he had become too reckless and an ideologue, resulting in the assault on his home that awarded him his second tomoe and later his third. Now was the time to flex that muscle and work it to keep it strong and sharp.

The inuzuka would give a nod without words in response to Yurei’s greeting, after fastening his headband firmly around his forehead before turning his attention towards the fresh corpse in the streets. “There’s been a murder” Yurei would inform him. “Yah no shit” Akio would think to himself as he placed a stereotypical thumb and pointing finger on his chin, murder in hoshigakure… Rare but not unheard of, especially with the amount of extremist growing in the city.
It seemed Yurei and himself were the only shinobi around, aside from the medics. Which made them responsible for figuring this out. The dark haired gennin would give a nod to yurei’s suggestion that he should use his nose, impressed by the growing shinobi’s seemingly impressive observation. Akio had never told him what his clan could do, so the boy was obviously observant. “Yah I’ll check it, do some crowd control or something while I do my thing” He’d say as he nudged Esu into the crime scene.
Ignoring the staring crowd akio would find himself next to the corpse of the man that had been slain, red cloth ripped from his attacker as he had tried to fight for his life it seemed, still laid in the man’s cold hands. “That should do it right Esu?” He’d say as he let his shephard catch the scent, after all he didn’t wanna start sniffing a corpse in front of all these people if he didn’t have too.
A resounding bark would come from his canine companion, that gave Akio a general answer. “Yurei I think Esu’s got the scent!” He’d motion for his friend to come over as his other hand pointed towards Esu, who was already taking off through an alleyway. “Better follow fast!” The Inuzuka would say as he began to sprint after the shepherd.

Yurei nodded as Akio had left. The boy made an excellent tracker, but that hadn’t been hard to deduce, especially with the comments about smelling the Uchiha rather than, well, what normal people do. The Uchiha channeled his chakra into his eyes. If the murderer is a taijutsu specialist, they shouldn’t have a large chakra mass, but it should be bigger than most of these people. Yurei’s white Sharingan gazed over the medical shinobi. Their chakras were very large, like blue fires burning within them. The crowd, save Akio, was less impressive, with little to no chakra within them.
The Uchiha got up and began walking through the crowd. There was a chance that he or she was still here, and just blending within the crowd, but with the sparse shinobi, identification would be nearly impossible for him alone. But that’s what Akio was for. If his sense of smell was a strong as he theorized, finding a scent that matched the victim’s, even in the sweaty mass of the Hoshigakurean markets, would be easy.
And then it was set. Akio called out to Yurei. Esu had apparently found something. The pale Uchiha dashed forward, his speed accelerated with his Sharingan active as he dashed to catch up to Esu and Akio, bent on finding the murderer and trapping him within his new genjutsu. Yurei called the handseals from memory, as well as the specifications of the jutsu. Blinding the man should be easy enough, and then Akio and Esu would be able to get in close without having to worry about the counterstrike. The plan was fullproof, and, with a smaller chakra pool, trapping the murder in a genjutsu would be even easier.
All that was missing so far was causation. Why would someone do this? And in the middle of the day? And who was the victim? Or was this just some random murder, or perhaps a hate inclined one. The dead man didn’t seem like a shinobi. Maybe he had wronged the murderer in some way. These thoughts ran through Yurei’s head, but he was not prepared to make any conclusions, or to sympathize with the man. Although he had come close, Yurei had always done what needed in order to protect himself and those around him. Rarely did anger get the best of him, and, although inexcusable, no one was perfect. Least of all this culprit. But what had driven them to do such an act?
As Yurei followed the two, he thought about that. What would drive someone to kill. Yurei had never done it. Well, not intentionally. The child wouldn’t hurt a fly unless said fly threatened to blow up his house. The pale Uchiha fanned away the thoughts, instead focusing on following Akio and Esu.

Making their way through an alleyway filled with puddles from an earlier rainfall three sets of splashes could be heard echoing outward, first esu’s then akios then yurei in the lead. The group was moving fast because Esu didn’t wanna lose the scent, and had no sign of slowing down. Every now and then Akio would look behind him making sure that yurei was keeping up, which he seemed to have no trouble at all doing, in fact it seemed like he was willingly staying behind.
Shrugging it off he’d watch as Esu finally made it out of the cramped alleyway and onto the street, following about 10 seconds behind Akio would immediately slow his momentum as a horse drawn wagon pulled in front of the alleyway, instead of coming to a halt however he’d slide under it in one fluid motion, couldn’t afford to slow down after all they didn’t have the time. The culprit could be trying to leave the city, and if he was faster than akio or esu and already had a head start, they were definitely working against the clock.
The only advantage they could really hope for was that the man might think he had evaded arrest, after all what random murderer would expect someone with an inuzuka’s tracking abilities to catch the case. Yeah they could work with that, the inuzuka would think to himself as he got back to his feet, fully recovering from his slide. He wouldn’t bother looking over his shoulder as he was sure Yurei was a more adept ninja than himself, and the wagon wouldn’t slow him down one bit.
Esu seemed to be running down the middle of a crowded food market, and Akio would have to push his way through a crowd in the middle of the hoshigakure streets stirring up quite the commotion and attracting the rather rude anti shinobi comments with them. Akio would simply tune them out, after all you couldn’t please everyone, and they obviously didn’t know he was in pursuit of a murderer.
Finally he’d make it to the end of the crowd and find himself catching up to his canine companion who had taken a firm stop in front of what seemed to be an apartment building, his keen eyes would note smudged blood on the silver doorknob that lead into the apartment complex before he turned around to check if yurei was near, if he was he’d wait for the boy to catch up before saying “After you”
If he wasn’t Akio would go in alone, allowing Esu to take the lead, as he still had the scent and would clearly be the one to lead him to the room were the culprit awaited.

Re: A Job for a Guy with a Strong Nose (IO)

Yurei trailed closely behind Esu and Akio, deep in thought, yet physically aware. His Sharingan had afforded him with greater speed and reflexes, so being entirely in the moment was unnecessary. Instead, Yurei thought of the assailant, be they man or woman, and what they did and why they did it. Although Yurei had come uncomfortably close to killing, turning someone’s heart to mush was on another level. Yurei tried desperately to keep anyone he was fighting intact in order to not ensure more violence from the anti-shinobi group, even if fear was on his side from their initial, main assault.
The pale Uchiha raced just behind Akio, leaping over the carriage as he went over it. His mind could not help but to tail off as his body moved without his full consciousness. He went over scenarios in his head with his new genjutsu. Over and over again he recited the handsigns as he wormed carefully, yet effectively through the busy streets in pursuit of the assailant. Yurei knew nothing about them other than that they were a shinobi, and that they knew taijutsu. But what about the victim? In hindsight, the boy should have stayed behind to determine his identity. Was he a shinobi well? Was this some sort of rivalry? Or had the man been an anti-shinobi radical? Or was the man innocent? This information would have helped with deducing any sort of motivation, but that would come soon enough, especially with these three on their tail.
Esu and Aki finally came to a grinding halt, stopping suddenly in their tracks. Ahead was an old, run-down apartment. Had this been where the assailant went? Or had Esu tracked down the victim’s apartment? Perhaps they were both. Yurei couldn’t be for sure.
Akio offered the Uchiha to go inside first. Smart. Even with their better tracking abilities, Yurei was no doubt stronger and something of a first line of defense in the nicest way possible. Yurei nodded softly and crept around on the inside. The walls were ripped and peeling. This was not the best place to stay. At all. And there was no evidence of life. Thankfully, this place was out of commission.
Yurei inches forward, scanning the area with his eyes. “I’ll stay in front of you,” Yurei whispered, looking about the area. “You and Esu just tell me where to go, and I’ll catch them with my genjutsu. Watch out behind you, though. I can’t guard us from all sides.”
The genin’s voice was calm and methodical. He rarely got to play the part of tactician, but it seemed to work out thus far. The only problem was his lack of experience, but he made up for it in intuition, even if he didn’t like to put that much faith into it. Yurei stepped forward, eying the staircase and the main floor of the building. It smelled of dust, mold, and rotting materials. This building didn’t have many years left in it. Not in this state. Perhaps even less time.
The Uchiha stared about with his keen eyes. “I don’t see any chakra signatures, but my vision is limited." He listened closely, hearing the sounds of scattering feet. Probably rats. The pale boy gave a small look of disgust. “I can’t blame him for hiding here,” he whispered. “No one would want to set foot in here and look.”

Shortly after Yurei’s arrival the pale uchiha would take the lead, he was the stronger of the two and it made more sense to have him at the front of the pack. As if to reinforce that idea yurei would whisper “I’ll stay in front of you” Akio would simply say nothing and continue to walk in the poorly lit hallway in silence with his friends. Esu’s ears would be perked up, his sense of hearing greater than perhaps anyone’s in the groups and would be listening for any sounds coming from behind them.
Akio had complete confidence in his dog's abilities, so his attention to his back was completely focused ahead, down the long dark hallway before them, Yurei’s eyes were in that weird red state he had seen at the funeral a while ago. “See Chakra?” He’d ask in an almost confused state. What the hell were these eyes. “You and Damon, I never got an answer as to what was going on with your eye’s at the funeral. Are you two from the same clan or something?” He’d ask.
He’d hope that the pale boy would be able to give him an answer, but he’d also offer a suggestion as to where the man might be, “Try looking up, the scents coming from a higher floor… If I had to guess I’d say its probably around the third” As he said this his finger would point towards a door with a stairway icon on the plaque to the side of it.

“Huh? My eyes?” Yurei blinked twice before registering what the Inuzuka had said. “Oh, you mean my Sharingan,” he whispered. His white eyes cut to Akio gingerly. “It’s my clan’s kekkei genkai. Damon and I are family, apparently.”
The Uchiha briefly looked at Akio, examining his chakra mass. He wasn’t very strong at all. He’d have to keep an eye out for the boy more so than he had anticipated in order to keep him safe. “Have I not told you about it?” Yurei asked, his eyes cutting throughout the room. “They allow me to do all sorts of things. See chakra like I’m doing now, cast genjutsu, and improve my speed and reflexes. Well, that’s what I’ve noticed I can do.” Yurei kept his voice calm and reserved as to not make much noise. Had he really not divulged this information to Akio? Had it been that long since they spoke?
Yurei nodded after receiving Akio’s hint. The pale boy slowly crept up the spiral staircase. With every step, the wooden planks creaked and splintered. They must be rotting. The air inside the hotel was surprisingly humid. There must have been a leak somewhere, and, with the heat of the day, the dilapidated building was slowly falling apart in a sauna.
The white-haired genin wiped his brow as he ascended to the next floor, cutting the air with his Sharingan. With every step, Yurei felt he was going to crash through the building’s spiral staircase and land onto the ground floor. “Akio,” he whispered, coming to the second floor. “Where to now?” he asked, looking around.
Upstairs was a dim hallway, lit only by the windows in open rooms. Spiders lined the ceiling and corners with massive webs, but the floor itself lacked them. Someone definitely came through here. Yurei’s pale eyes peered through the dim light in search of a chakra signature. “I don’t see anyone, yet,” he whispered, tilting his head over his shoulder. “So why do you think he or she did it? Killed that guy, I mean. You think it was self-defense?” Yurei asked in a hushed tone. His mind raced with the possibilities. “Either way,” he would say whether or not Akio offered his thoughts, “we should be able to get a response out of this person.”

As Yurei began to explain the magical eyes of the uchiha clan it would only confuse akio more. Apparently Yurei and Damon were loosely related, probably from the same clan. And by the sound of what their eyes could do… The sharingan, it was a very powerful clan. By the overall feel of it he’d say that their clan would put his to shame in combat. The ability to see combat, cast genjutsu.. Even their reflexes were enhanced.
Akio was almost jealous for a moment before he looked to his canine friend esu. The dog would share a similar glance in his jealousy would be wiped away in a moment. He wouldn’t trade esu for a single damn set of eyes, he was proud to be an inuzuka. Yurei would continue to talk in a low voice as he and akio walked past the door he had pointed towards and came into contact with the giant stairway.
Looking up the wooden stairs would swirl all the way towards the top of the building, which akio guessed to be five stories tall. But they only needed to ascend three if his guess was correct, and his nose rarely failed him. Slowly the two would make their way up the staircase that had withered with time, structural damage clearly present and visible, hell even audible.
It would be a miracle if the three of them made it to the top without alerting the man. As they reached the top akio halt shortly behind yurei, peering into the poorly lit hallway “Where to now?”
His friend would ask before stating that he couldn’t see anything yet. Akio couldn’t either… But he could smell something, the scent of the man was at its strongest, and the unique smell of blood lingered in the air, looking at the door frame to the exit of the stairwell the bloody imprint of a man's hands could be seen marked on the peeling paint.
Taking a sniff in the air Akio would concentrate before whispering, “Third room on the right” Now all that was left to answer was yurei’s question. “All we know is the dead guy tore a piece of his cloth off of him, and that he killed the man. It does us no good to build stories in our head… We can ask him after we detain him” Was the whispered response that the boy would find.
