The foul curse was wriggling through Kozogami, and he could feel it. He knew that, somehow, it was meant to be there. It wasn't as if it had been made just for him (though thinking on it now, it probably had been), but more like he had been made for it. What kind of cruel fate would make him compatible with something that felt as disgusting as this? He gritted his teeth as the marks slowly stopped spreading out from their seal. It seemed that with enough focus and expenditure of chakra, he was able to make it stay still for a good while. As long as he didn't stress himself out too much, it wouldn't take him. Not while he was there, anyway.
He looked out the window and sighed as his eyes wandered across the landscape around his room. How was he going to solve this? Hikari must have tricked him. Peddling curses as "holy" marks? She must be deceiving the entirety of the village, and he was far too weak to stop her. Furthermore, he'd fallen head over shoulders for her clever ploy. No, he'd be too weak and possibly under her control. This meant he just had to keep his head low and figure out exactly how this curse worked.
It was then that he saw it. Or rather him, sitting atop his nightstand. Ethereal, and certainly not real, but yet there he was. He looked familiar, too. A man with midnight-black hair and slightly glowing red eyes, clad in a white coat and what appeared to be... combat boots? What a bizarre fellow. Kozogami scampered back further into the corner of his bed, eyeing the hallucinatory stranger with suspicion. Was this a part of the curse? Was this something that Hikari had sent to haunt his dreams?
"No, not really. Your body is responding to the curse. I was aware of seals like this, and so I prepared something special for Hoshigakure. You're going to do wonderful things." The man grinned, but there was no happiness behind it. Just a cold, icy void, like something you'd find in a distant planet devoid of atmosphere. It was a smile for Kozogami, not for the man himself. So freaky, the boy thought. If his mind died in his body, would his body die too? No, don't think that! The man could seemingly read his thoughts...
"Anyways," the man continued, seemingly not wanting to waste time, "what you do it up to you. You've already come to the obvious conclusion that you've got talent, and you already have the aptitude to work hard and strive your best to get what you want. There are only two things remaining." The man walked over to a picture of the library and squinted at it for a few seconds before turning back to the boy. "The first is a disregard for ethics, though this will only come with time." For the first time during this whole episode, Kozogami spoke.
"Ethics? Aren't those... I dunno, good things?" His voice was wavering, but still a sentence of challenge to this child of the mind. It worked, seemingly. The man scowled slightly, his face twisting into a visage of disdain and slight fury.
"You'll find out soon enough. It's a decision you're going to make for yourself, of course, whether these guidelines are good for you or not. But in the end, they'll betray you, and you will desert them. Either way the second thing you need is a bit of good fortune. Here, let me bestow some upon you." He stretched forth his hand, and Kozogami fell back onto the cushions as his mind was flooded with information, or at least bits and pieces of it.
"Unlike that woman who placed the curse on you, I claim no ownership over you." The man continued to speak as some kind of jutsu formula carved itself into Kozogami's memory. It was something... amazing. Something that he had tried to comprehend for so long but lacked the strength to understand. How was this happening?
"Your actions are your own, but you're going to carry something very special for me. Or rather, 'the one who came before'. After all, the real me is gone now. I'm just a piece of you projected to carry his message." What? That didn't make sense to Kozogami. He refocused, and decided to just view this guy as a different person in his own brain, rather than just a piece of himself. "Fine. In that case, I guess I'll refer to him in the first person. I collected all kinds of information in my life, but this jutsu I found right in my home village. Convenient, right? You'll make good use of it, I just know it. It has all sorts of practical uses, as does its upgrade and counterpart. Using the information I gave you, you should be able to learn those as well. Good luck, kiddo.
I'm counting on you."
The man vanished, and Kozogami was left contemplating what he'd just learned. He stretched out his hand and tapped a stuffed beetle on top of his blanket. Immediately, the beetle seemed to sink further down in the bed as its weight was increased. Holy fuck! This was... actually a really useful technique. He failed yet to see how this was an earth release thing, but he knew that he'd just stumbled across something absolutely phenomenal.
With the large expenditure of chakra, the curse mark began to creep its way across his flesh again. Should he just let it go? Hikari's temptation was there, teasing him, begging him to let down his guard. At the same time, 'the one who came before' had told him that his actions were his own, whether he knew it or not. He stood up and released the jutsu, focusing his chakra on the curse mark. Easy, right? It seemed like the new comprehension had freed up more of his power as well. Now, wasn't this just grand?
