Next time, you do it. Kozachi was heading home, grumbling a little. She didn't know why she was so cranky lately... well, it WAS that time of the month, but crude jokes aside, she basically didn't have much to do. In other words, listlessness was her problem. Well, nothing solved that like a good old fashioned training session.
...
What? It's not like she was the only one who trained to relieve stress. So, after coming home from a day of patrolling, she headed straight to the training grounds. It was a bright day, and things were warming back up again after a week of cool. Not a bad environment to train in, all in all. She stretched and yawned as several blackbirds flew overhead, becoming mere specks of dark against the bright sun. Like little raisins. Of course, she wasn't stupid enough to look directly at the sun. She was certainly smarter than that. Still, practicing underneath the sun like this might help her learn something new. She began her preparatory chakra control methods, breathing in and circulating the energy around her body. The method she was using now was still elementary in nature, but that didn't mean that it was bad for her.
In fact, this was the optimal training method. Any higher and she wouldn't be able to handle it. Any lower and she wouldn't gain decent benefits. There was also the fact that any jutsu she set her mind to learning, she'd get it down... given enough time. With this meditation technique, her base would be perfectly set up to comprehend anything the universe might throw at her. Well, whatever. She performed a handseal, and focused. Right, she knew what she was going to work on today! A simple fire jutsu, on the level of the fireball technique.
There was a simple formula available to her for this specific purpose, of course. The Hosenka no jutsu wasn't too strong by itself, but when combo'd with simple tools was something that even the higher level fire users would start off with frequently. So, she resolved to get it down now before she was forced into some kind of hectic combat situation. Hopefully, that wouldn't happen for a while, but now that she was a genin, danger could lurk behind any arbitrary corner. Internally, she knew that at the moment, she was pretty weak, but with any luck, that would all change very soon.
She arrived at the training ground to find it conveniently empty. Well, that was good. With nobody around, she would have a chance to experiment and show off without having to worry about hurting any bystanders. Besides, who'd want to watch HER, anyway? Creeps. Sometimes, she couldn't stand boys, with their leering stares and eyes that didn't quite rise above her neckline. Anyways, she was glad that she was alone for this practice session. Solitude wasn't an inherently evil thing, although humans were indeed social creatures. Without company, most would go insane. She, for example, didn't know what she'd do without her older brother.
It was interesting, however, to note that she had heard of people whose brains were more rational than others'. This, of course, would only happen after the brain was damaged or changed in some drastic physical way. The woman whose surgery had gone wrong would save two total strangers from a fire rather than her own single baby. Things like that didn't really interest her, but they certainly had their own little charm and appeal, she thought, that anyone could appreciate. The human brain was so... weird. She knew hers wasn't really typical either, but there wasn't much she could do about that. She just had to use the brain she had been born with.
Well, that was the funny thing, wasn't it? Did she REALLY still have her original mind? Every action that a person takes rewires their brain in some small, minuscule way. Memories, always being formed, made the neurons in a person's brain create connections that hadn't been there before. Little shortcuts for action potentials zipping along organic cellular lines. Blegh, this was for medical ninja, not for her. She had no interest whatsoever in becoming a healer at all, and was pretty sure she lacked the talent for it either way.
Speaking of talent, was that all that mattered in the ninja world? Well, hard work certainly had a place there too, which is why she was out here practicing at all. Nevertheless, there was certainly no denying that there was special treatment for those with some kind of inherent ability, which didn't really bother her. Fine, they deserved it. But in the end, she'd at least be able to outshine them and make her parents proud. Maybe. Impressing them was nice and all, but the person she really wanted to prove herself to was Ken. Had her best friend (and crush) still been alive, she'd have wanted to prove it to her as well, but....THEY'D taken her. Still a mystery to be solved.
Still, that wasn't any of her concern at the moment. She wanted to get this jutsu down, though it wasn't really all that great. It did LOOK cool, though. She'd seen it performed before, and she'd like it from the start. There was a certain flashy spread to it that she liked. It was funny, that, how glittery things attracted the human mind. Why was that, anyway?
Didn't have anything to do with the anterior singulate gyrus, that's for sure. Pattern matching didn't have much to do with human attraction to shinies. Beauty, even. Why did people like, well... art? Music? Sculpture? There was so much she didn't know about the human mind, and more still that she didn't really care to learn about. Like she was ever going to do brain surgery, right? The thought of it tickled her a little bit. She didn't really know what to do if she ever had to open somebody's head up. Better to leave that to the medics.
Either way, by this point, the training grounds were starting to become like a good friend to her. She visited them all the time, to try and brush up on her skills while making improvements where she could. She wasn't a genius by any stretch of the imagination, but she definitely tried her best. Still, by keeping her head low, she could make a good bit of progress without anyone noticing. This had its advantages, of course. There was no way she was going to leak the secrets of her training to anyone else, though her training wasn't really all that secretive or special to begin with.
She began to knead fire element chakra, swirling it around like her brother did with the soft drinks from the store, or like her father did with his wine (which she wasn't allowed to touch). Wine experienced something called marbling, which had something to do with its quality and age... she just didn't know what. Chakra didn't do any such thing. It was more slippery than any liquid had a right to be, and kinda just flowed around the through things. Insidious, this energy of life. Still, it was her job as a ninja to master it and get it under control.
Now, the beginning of this jutsu was similar to that of the fireball jutsu. Basically, just expel fire chakra from your mouth, then get results. But this time around, the results would be different from the fireball jutsu. Indeed, instead of expelling the mass of fire chakra as one large object, she'd have to split it into multiple smaller objects, which she'd need a bit of extra control for. Each projectile of flame had to have its own focused form. Well, they were all shaped the same, so she could simply derive a formula that would apply to each.
She focused, and the training grounds became more like a perfect island of isolation around her. The noises of the afternoon city faded away into the void as she began doing the effort filled task of learning a new jutsu from observation and scratch. She'd seen the jutsu before, but the rest she had to do all by herself. While it wasn't the easiest way, in the end, it'd still provide her with the satisfaction she needed to get the damn job done. It was interesting, of course, that she was doing it this way instead of just asking someone to teach her.
Then again, would that be exposing her training routine to other people? She'd given it a good long think a few hours ago and decided to just keep it to herself. It was just a low level jutsu, after all, just a C-rank technique. People wouldn't really think that she was anything special if they saw her trying to comprehend it in the training grounds, like any other fire element user. Then again, fire element came naturally to her. It was almost like she was on her way to mastering it...
She tried again, and succeeded in producing three separate projectiles, each with their own identical and neat form. Alright, nice. Now, imagine something. Imagine, if you will, a block of chakra. Cut it in half. Then cut it again. Repeat this process billions and billions of times until you get down to the smallest unit. Well, she wasn't endeavoring to do anything close to that, but the mental image certainly helped when she cast the jutsu next. She actually managed to get five projectiles out of this one. Not bad, considering that she'd only been practicing for a few minutes.
Kozachi knew that you could add shuriken into the little flames to increase their offensive power and damage capability, but wasn't nearly good enough for that yet. When she had the time, she'd get around to it. Right now, though, what she needed to do was create more projectiles from a single use of the technique. She knew full well that the methods she'd tried so far only had limited success. There was also no one way forward, no straight path that was the same for each person. No, indeed, she'd have to do it on her own again.
Comprehension became a little harder now. Her chakra was a bit exhausted, so she took a little break, drinking from a cup of ice cold water, with ice, of course. An ice cube somehow managed to slip out and fall to the floor, shattering into many pieces. Whoa, wait a second. Gaining comprehension of fire via ice? Maybe she could just shatter the fire chakra precisely as she needed to rather than trying to force it apart like dough. Right, this was worth another shot. She put down her drink and walked back to the grounds, hopes high.
She tried it again, forming the sequence of handseals required for the jutsu. This time around, as the chakra emerged from her body, she caused it to fragment rather than pulling it apart like taffy, which, now that she thought about it, was awfully inefficient. This was a much more direct method, and she was surprised that she hadn't thought about it first. Then again, the human brain tended to work in weird ways, as she'd thought about earlier. Like a spray of brilliance, the fire tongues shot out into the afternoon air over the training grounds, dissipating as they reached the limit of their range. Wow, she was growing more proficient with the fire release every day. Certainly, her brother couldn't boast the same power as she did, though his approach to things was much more... sublte. Still, she didn't need to be subtle if being loud got the job done.
Leave stealth to the stealthy, right? That's not to say that she was bad at it, but she just... wasn't as good as Ken, again. Soon, though, she'd be a more valuable member of the Konoha colony than he. She loved him dearly, but knew better than to let him get ahead.
