Calliope woke up to the sound of thudding on her door. Still in pajamas, rubbing her eyes with her sleeve, she opened the door to see who it was at such an hour. The sun was just barely rising in the distance and there was still an early morning chill in the air. It came as little surprise to Calli that the one knocking on her door was Kuro, her friend of many years, with a big smile plastered on his face.
"Uggh... whatever it is, give me a minute." She would say before closing the door again. Knowing Kuro, time was probably of the essence and so she got dressed and put her hair up quickly. 'No time to make the bed' she thought to herself. Upon opening the door again she would see that Kuro had not moved. "Okay I'm ready. What are we getting up to this time?" She would ask groggily.
Kuro, already feeling energetic, hopped back to reveal two wooden boxes, hastily wrapped in tablecloths. "We.... are gonna bring these heavy crates down to one of the old temples! Exciting right?!" He would say without the slightest bit of sarcasm. Kuro grew up in one of Hoshi's orphanages, one that was run by a pair of kind religious folk. They never once treated the children poorly and they acted as if each kid was one of their own. The children who were never adopted, Kuro included, often considered the couple to be their parents. Kuro still visited them from time to time and Calliope had even caught him slipping them some of his missions rewards every so often. Ever since he was young he would always jump at an opportunity to help out the church. His way of paying back his happy childhood.
Calli sighed and without a word shut the door behind her and picked up one of the crates. It was heavier than it first looked. She struggled a little to fully lift it. "You weren't kidding about the heavy part." She would whine.
"Oh come on, they aren't that bad. Think of it as muscle training!" Kuro would say, hoisting up his box clumsily. He was a whizz with ninjutsu, but physical strength was not his strong suit. Calliope couldn't help but laugh at her friend's wobbling knees. He didn't look disheartened however. His smile was still stuck on his face. "Remember, don't mention that we're shinobi. Bit of a sore spot for these people." He'd say as they began walking, his breathing already getting heavy.
The temple wasn't very far from Calli's apartment, but the weight of the boxes slowed the pair down quite a bit. The sun was shining brightly by the time they made it to the front of the temple building. When they entered the faces in the room lit up. An old man with a thin mustache came hobbling up to them and hugged Kuro tightly. "Good to see you my boy!" the old man said. Calli hadn't realized how popular Kuro was in the community. His energy was contagious and he made everyone he knew smile.
They cracked open the boxes for the priest and helped him move the supplies into a storage area. Blankets, bed rolls, jarred food, bottles of spices, etc. It was a big haul of goods and the people of the church seemed to be so happy about it. "Thank you two. With all this we should be able to help so many more people in need. Kuro you truly are an angel." The old man said before once again wrapping Kuro in a hug.
They were there for a couple hours moving the goods and helping the temple workers get things put away. It was about lunch time when they finally said their goodbyes. As they were walking to a local deli to get a well deserved lunch Calli would think about all the good they did, and how their small deed would trickle down into a whole bunch more little good deeds.
"Hey Kuro, thanks for bringing me along today." She would say, smiling.
