Advancement of Seals Empty Advancement of Seals

Sun Jun 06, 2021 1:33 pm
There is a saying that once you taste power, that’s all you crave. Sayings as such all came from somewhere and while there is merit and reason into why such sayings have come into existence, sometimes it was okay to lean into them. Yomiko always thought that this saying in particular was silly. As a shinobi, power is necessary to stay alive. Knowledge is power. Skill is power. A strong will is power. Power isn’t just strength or the ability to crush an opponent. That’s something that she wanted to continue to showcase in how she wanted to exemplify her own skill set and art form as a shinobi of the leaf. How? With more seals of course.

When her mother had shown her those quick succession of small scale seals, she was able to perform them pretty easily. Though, as her mother had said, they were rudimentary and easily learned. The part that stuck with Yomiko the more and more she thought about it though was how two of the seals she learned; the Fuinjutsu Lock and the Fuinjutsu Breaking techniques were both something that could scale in power by the amount of intent and chakra infused into the technique. The implications of what strength these two techniques could reach of course flooded her imagination with scenarios that easily could have come straight out of one of the many books she had read.

A seal that locks away treasure or an entire ruin of wealth. A skill that breaks any seal on something; unleashing a great evil or saving a great light hidden away. Sure, the thoughts were on the verge of a fairytale, but so much of what the shinobi could do were just that, right? These were the thoughts that racked her mind as she fiddled with the empty scroll container she nabbed from her father’s study while pacing in the backyard of her home. She had to get stronger. She had to make a name for herself. She had to create an example for others to follow suit no matter the cost.

Flipping the top of the scroll container on and off, she finally stopped her pacing. Blue eyes scanned the tree top of the wisteria in their backyard, glancing over each individual bloom for a few moments before letting a long, slow exhale escape her lips. It was time to try. Walking underneath the wisteria, Yomiko propped the empty scroll container against the tree’s trunk to keep it standing upright as she took a step back to perform the necessary hand signs for the locking seal she had learned just the other day. This time it came with the idea of it being stronger, the intent to truly keep those away from the imaginary contents of the container.

With that, her index finger began to glow a soft blue as she traced it along the top of the container. Yomiko watched as the familiar looking seal spread out along the top to encompass it and show that it was now locked. The lines were different. It was ever so subtle, but they looked just a little bit thicker, a little bit longer, and just a little more cohesive than they had before. She was the creator of this seal, so she could feel its presence and it felt stronger than the seal she had performed the other day. It felt sturdy, much like a real padlock would. For good measure, Yomiko even tried prying it open. The container lid felt much sturdier than it had before when she locked it; almost like it had become a seamless part of the container itself.

Success!

Yomiko beamed, smiling from ear to ear. Yes, the technique wasn’t anything flashy, powerful, or even something offensive. But if it meant honing her skills, getting better at chakra control and precision, as well as making her seals stronger, then that’s what mattered in the long run. Knowing that, this was where a bit of a challenge would arise. She knew how to lock and break seals but this lock was stronger than something she had broken before. If she used too little chakra, then the seal wouldn’t break. If she tried to use too much chakra then the technique itself would likely become unstable and just not be executed. Both of which would be deemed a failure on her part.

Focusing, Yomiko’s index and middle fingers began to glow blue. Touching the seal she had applied to the container lid, she traced it and watched as the seal sturdily stayed put. That was fine. Taking a second to breathe twice slowly through her nose and then out of her mouth, Yomiko traced the seal once more. Nothing. Her brows furrowed at this as she repeated this a handful of times to no avail. Each time she became increasingly more and more frustrated, barely allowing any time to pass in between attempts. Her chakra wasn’t being well molded nor was it being applied correctly at all in order to break the seal. And she knew that.

Alright Yomiko, you just told yourself this and played this scenario out in your head. Okay. I’m trying to not overload chakra into the technique so it doesn’t make it unstable. In doing so, I’m not applying enough chakra to begin with. If I keep approaching it that way, then I’ll never break my own locking seal.

Diving into the action once more, Yomiko pooled chakra into her fingers with the intent to break the seal that she had placed on the container. Just as she had thought to herself earlier by playing the scenario out, she applied too much chakra in a hurry so when she tried to trace along the seal, the seal basically counteracted her attempt the blue glow faded away. Nodding to herself, Yomiko tried this a handful more times all with the same results. Too much, too much, too little, too much, and too little. While she wasn’t successful, each attempt had used varying degrees to match the chakra in the locking seal and the window had been narrowed down enough to where she was confident she was close to matching her locking seal's new power.

Yet again, she concentrated chakra into her index and middle fingers, the soft blue glow returning once more as she traced along the locking seal she had placed. The seal seemed to want to break, but it didn’t. She had used too little of application in order to break the seal. But she was almost there! The corner of her lips twitched up into a bit of a sly grin as she repeated the technique one more time, circling the seal with her fingers as the seal broke; the black lines quickly dissipated to allow her access to the imaginary contents of the scroll container once more. The sly little grin turned into another beaming smile once more as she snatched the container and threw it up into the air.

I did it! I did it! Okay! I can’t let this get to my head, not yet at least. I’m not learning anything profound. Stay humble but sharp. I have to get better but I need to remember that improving comes with patience and in small increments. There is no way to achieve instantaneous power.

With that, Yomiko grabbed the container up once more and made her way back into the house. The beaming smile had retreated but a small one was still plastered across her face. Little victories eventually added up into one big one, right?
