Rolling for Drinks [Festival]

The day had begun like most for the young Senju genin. Bright and early with no time to really think about what sort of mischief he could get into. That life was one that he was not entitled to have. His days consisted of training and hard work. Constantly, he was training. Either with Hikari or with his father in the private training area within the Senju compound, Mikaela was nothing but training. Standing in the kitchen, he’d pour herself some hot tea after he was dressed. Looking to the steaming cup silently, he’d watch the steamroll up in light wisps of vapor and curl about while he thought about his life. There had been much that had changed. Once the happy child that would find any time to get out of the compound and read in the forest or even play with his friends, now she had barely spent time outside of training. He didn’t believe himself to be a hermit because he was hardly in the house. However, the social interaction of people was something that had almost become foreign to him with the constant work.

Slowly, he took one final sip from his cup before he turned and rinsed out the cup, placing it in the strainer for it to dry. The midday sun had decided to hide behind midday clouds. Overcast skies bathed the world in a soft grey. Mikaela quite enjoyed times like these. He enjoyed the rain more. Without an umbrella, however, he was content with only the muting of Tanbogakure's usually vibrant colors. Everything wasn't as bright today. He wondered why bright was such a positive thing. If something is too bright you can't even look at it. He wondered if the sun was lonely for that reason. The irony of seeing everything only for no one to be able to see you back.

As he arrived at the bar, though, everything appeared to be smooth sailing. Setsuna, his cousin, gave him a cheerful wave from the back as she polished glasses. I suppose she got tired of asking for money and finally got a job, the young Senju thought. It was still early in the afternoon and not many patrons had been to the bar yet, so the going was slow for management. A perfect time to rest or get some random extra work done. Mikaela gave a quick wave back and sat down at a round table where dice were sat at. Maybe a few would like to play a game, roll the dice for drinks.

It had been a an eventful festival so far. Everybody had come dressed for the part, everyone was taking it as seriously as Yamato had been told they would. He had feared, just a little bit, that the masks and the clothing might not actually have been an important part of the tradition, but Yamato might have been getting pranked instead. It had happened to him before. More times than he would have cared to admit to himself. It was nice to finally be part of something that matched his expectations for appearances.

Needless to say all of the activities on top of just the looks were a nice addition as well. It’s not what Yamato had joined the festival for, but what he had learned to love very fast. There was the time he spent playing the various games, some hosted by himself and some others: go, shogi, chess. All of his favorites. He had drank tea everywhere he had played these games, and they had mixed in with the sake that was being given away at select corners of the small village.

It was nice. Mostly. This was definitely not the most alcohol Yamato had drunk in a day. Not even close. But the excitement of the event must have had a secondary effect of accelerating his circulation, making the alcohol mix faster with his blood. He took another one of the gifted sake, bowing gently. He took the shot rather swiftly and that proved to be a mistake very fast. He lost his balance for a second, choosing to lean against the wall until he recovered.

There was only one way, he thought, to get out of this weird phase he was in: to go to the bar to conquer his level of drunkenness, decide himself what phase he wanted to remain in. He made his way to his regular place. It was empty, as before. Most of Tanbo was in the streets at that moment. He fixed his oni mask before walking inside.

He noted a figure he hadn’t met before. From his point, he couldn’t yet see if they had a mask on or not. Regardless, Yamato walked up and sat at the bar. He ordered one of his favorite drinks (but not his all-time favorite so he could have the deniability of keeping his anonymity). As he drank, and his slightly-tilted mask covered his vision, he addressed the person sitting nearby, “Enjoying the events so far? I have been mostly playing games and drinking, if I can be honest. How about you?”.

The day was young. It was pleasant and festive around tanbogakure as it always was around this time of year. The saturnalia was 100 years old now. Hayato wondered how had the first Saturnalia been? Did the progenitors look down from the heavens and smile at what they had created? Surely as far as sake festivals went this was at least in the top 3 in the world. For that reason he found it to be a shame he didn't partake of the local drink very often. Alcohol just wasn't for him. Or so he thought, so why was he in front of the local bar in the middle of the day? He thought now was as good a time as any to give it another try. The festival only came once a year and this was a special one. He just became a shinobi, it was a centennial, it just felt like the time.

He carefully opened the door and peeked inside peering at the place through the raging red oni mask. "..." He only saw few other masked individuals probably taking a break from enjoying the festivities as well. He slinked in closing the door behind him, and tried to pretend he knew what he was doing. He walked over to the bar and sat none set away from the blue oni masked individual.

"I'll have a sake please...the house favorite" He muttered in the direction of the bartender. She respond with a nod and a little giggle as she brought him a tray with a cup and vessel. He peered down into the milky liquid. It certainly contained more than the 'one sake' he was thinking, but he knew giving it back now would be strange. "Oh well, how many drinks could it really be?" He poured himself a cup and tipped it up eyeing the two others to make sure he was doing it right.

The festival was in full swing with many villagers and tourists alike milling about the stalls and crowding the streets even midday. The throng of people was smaller than the previous day, probably due to many sleeping away the effects of the alcohol from the previous night. Hikari had been in that position not too long ago, having tried every sake there was to offer after making a vow to live life to the fullest for those who had departed prematurely. She had accomplished her mission of drinking until her mind went blank, and had already dealt with the throbbing headache the day after. She had realized her drunken self had forgotten to drink enough water, a rookie mistake for a rookie drinker. Alcohol had never been her thing, always too much of a light weight to be able to keep up with the other shinobi, but the social aspect of drinking made it worthwhile to her. It was enjoyable to have a drink or two amongst a conversation with friends or a glass of wine over a meal.

The former scenario seemed to be the event for the day, as the white haired shinobi walked through the threshold of the bar and saw a few attendees wearing masks for the festival while drinking away. One of them seemed familiar to her even with their mask on, their hair color and stature matching that of someone she had seen the most often so far while in Tanbo. With how often she saw them it would be hard for her to not recognize them immediately; however, to keep their anonymity she wouldn’t say their name upon greeting them unless they said hers. The table they were seated at was accompanied by her student, and the only other person she had seen just as often in Tanbo: Mikaela. Getting to celebrate the festival with those two would surely be a delight, just the thought of it caused a grin to sweep across her face. Hopefully they could share some drinks and play games the whole afternoon!

Hikari ordered the bartender's recommended sake, as they were far better judge of what was good than she, and a bowl of water before heading to the table with Mikaela and Yamato, noticing the dice laid out and wondering what game the two had been playing. “Mind if we join you fellas?” Her soft voice asked as her lilac tinted eyes peered out through her kitsune mask. Kuro, his face covered with a white and red yokai mask, looked up at the two and wagged his tail excitedly, obviously being able to tell who they were based on their scents.

If they allowed her to join them she would take a seat and place the bowl of water on the ground for Kuro before pouring some of the sake into the cup the bartender had provided her. “Cheers!” She would raise her cup to her friends before nodding to the man with the red oni mask who had just been eyeing the other two. “Care to join us at the table, friend? There’s plenty of room!”

As Mikaela took a sip of his alcoholic shot a blonde-haired man sat near his table, ordering a drink from the bar then asking if he's enjoying his evening. Mikaela waved his hand effortlessly towards the chair, inviting him to sit. The emerald-eyed genin sat his cup on the table as he began to study the man, he wear a reaper mask but a beautiful white kimono. Flashy outfit and blonde hair reminded him of officer Yamato. Mikaela then decided to start speaking as he realized he was just in his head too long, "ah yes, I'm really loving to lighting show that was presented outside. I haven't played any games yet, but I"m trying to start a drinking one. Care to join?" He asked the blonde man with a warm, inviting tone.

Next, we have a boy with black hair walk in that seemed familiar to him but the next person that followed, he knew well. Not that her physical appearance gave off who she was, her white hair, but the large wolf that accompanied her. "Hikari, Kuro!" Mikaela exclaimed as they entered. It was always a wonderful feeling to see people he knew rather than just meeting new people all the time. That's when Hikari asked to join "Sure, why not. However, I think I prefer something a little something stronger if you don't mind," the Senju said as the waitress brought the sake to the table. He would then request that she bring him a bottle of shōchū out. The stronger of the duo is what his father and brother usually would drink. Hikari then offered the other male to join them for the game. Rather if he would join or not, he would explain the simple rules of the dice game.

"So, rules are simple. We're going to roll the dice, and whatever number we get. That's how many shots we have to do." Mikaela said laughing as he knew that he was going to get drunk fast after this game. He rolled one of the dice first and it landed on a one right now, he sighed in relief. After receiving his bottle, he would then pour it in the glass until it was a fourth of the way full. Smiling and then giving a wink at everyone he would say, "time to turn this into a party," he slammed his liquid to the back of his throat and slowly sat his glass down on the table. The feeling burned at his throat but he didn't want to show any signs of regret after he took his shot.
