Frantic footsteps could be heard running around the small two bedroom area as the snowy haired woman made sure nothing was out of place. The dishes were done, groceries were put away, the bed was made, the floor was mopped, and the bathroom was spotless. Yet she still felt like she was forgetting something. She couldn’t place her finger on what, but the feeling wouldn’t leave her alone as the clock continued to tick on by. Seconds then minutes passed as she quickly paced from one room to the next, triple checking that it looked presentable for her guests.

The entrance to the room had an area for guests to remove their shoes and replace them with soft black slippers. Moving from the entry way there was a short hallway, to the right of the hallway was the quaint kitchenette that had all the necessities one would need for living alone as well as looking rather modern in terms of appliances and colorscheme, and to the left of the hallway was another small hallway that had two doors, both of which were closed. If one were to venture down that hallway the left door would lead to the bathroom and the right door would lead to the bedroom. If the guests chose to continue straight from the first hallway they would be greeted with a small living room area that had a cream colored couch, a cream colored loveseat, a black recliner, a medium sized tv across from the couch, and a glass coffee table. The floor was hardwood in the entire room, with the bedroom being carpet. There were a few paintings of flowers and beaches hanging up in the hallways and living room area.

Kuro, who had been sitting on the couch watching her as she worried over nothing, got up from his perch and stood in her way, the Hyuuga accidentally bumping into him as her mind was preoccupied. He nuzzled her shoulder gently to try and calm her down, a usual tactic of his that had almost a hundred percent success rate. Today was one of those days, as his nuzzling brought a smile to the formally stressed kunoichi.

“You always know how to help me, thank you Kuro.” Her voice was soft as she gave him some pets on his head, eliciting a very happy tail wag from the canine. “I don’t know why I was so stressed, I guess it’s because they are my first visitors here. I’ll go make some tea since they will be here soon, I could definitely use some.”

With a now more relaxed look upon her face, Hikari entered her small kitchenette area and started her kettle. While it was heating up the water she pulled out three dark blue tea cups with pink and red flowers etched into the sides of the cups and three matching tea plates for the cups to sit on. Then she pulled out some green tea leaves, a teapot, and a tea infuser. All that was left for her to do was wait, a race between the kettle and her friends to arrive. Who would be victorious?

Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO) Empty Re: Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO)

Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:00 am
Walking through the streets Asahi gently waved at the passerby.  His time in the village had been productive, both for himself and he liked to think, for the village as well.  He had managed to rack up an impressive resume of missions in a short time, his work at both the festival and tea house had been met with appreciation, and he had finally felt at home.  The village was nothing like the land of iron, and while he had memories he missed, the future looked just as pleasant.  Today, he had a meeting with two of his friends.  Yamato, who he had become quite close too, as well as a newer addition to the village, Hikari.  Having met her at the bar, as well as their impromptu meetup on tour, he’d taken a liking to her.

He’d simply been told that Yamato had an experiment he’d been working on and would appreciate Asahi’s help, which he’d volunteered during the day of the tour.  His research had led to several developments, soon he had great hope to be given clearance to search Okada castle in earnest.  Something that he would need Yamato’s help with.  This seemed like the least he could do to repay the future favor.

Asahi was dressed in one of his favorite kimonos.  Yellow, with floral designs matched with black hakama pants.  Wooden clogs beat against the road, his blonde hair left loose about his face.  A gentler more feminine look than he had adopted previously for the festival.  His ninjato hung loose on his hip, unlikely to be needed, but habit dictated he carried it.  His Tanbogakure headband was tied into the yellow belt about his waist.  He checked the scrap of paper in his hands that held an address written carefully upon it in his own hand.  He knew of the area and made his way there.  His left hand swayed with his walks while his right held his kiseru to his lips.  The smell of lavender permeating the air around him.

He’d shortly arrive and knock.  “It’s pleasant to see you again.”  He’d say taking Hikari’s hand assuming she opened the door and allowed him in.  He’d briefly shake it, and make his way inside at the sound of a whistle king tea kettle.  That would make him smile, though not as much as the sign of the wolf.  “Well now, who is your friend?”  He would say looking over the creature.  “Has Yamato arrived yet?”  He’d make himself comfortable wherever Hikari directed him.  Having carefully removed his clogs and swapped them for the black slippers provided.  If offered he would happily accept a cup of tea in his left hand.

Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO) Empty Re: Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO)

Yamato

Yamato knocked on the door, more nervous than he had been in some time. He was rarely unsure about the outcome of his projects. It frightened him. On top of it all, the person who had volunteered to be the first test was his dear friend Asahi. Really the only source of any mental comfort was Hikari. Yamato knew her for just a short amount of time, but she had already shown herself to be a strong person in the one mission they went on together, in the faraway land where Yoi had summoned them.

When the door was opened, Yamato nodded gently to his two peers, and walked in. "How are you two doing today?". He was carrying a briefcase that was overflowing with papers. "Make yourself comfortable Asahi, me and Hikari should go over the plans first.". Yamato had already given Hikari a copy of his research, so she could help out with the insight of someone who knew anatomy better than him.

Yamato laid all of the papers out on the table. "So..." he started, calming himself down with every word. "The basic theory of the procedure is to connect the major points in your chakra system to a complex seal that will open your body up to pull life from thin air. I… Am simplifying for you, Asahi. No offense. There’s just too much to explain if we get into it, but Hikari’s medical experience has been a breakthrough.". The more he went over his research (most of which was edited with Hikari’s notes) the more he was assured everything was going to work. They had done everything properly. "I will be marking the seal, and Hikari’s going to help me with the medical side of the procedure, as well as guide me through your chakra system with her Byakugan. Ease yourself, there is only the slightest chance of failure, and we will keep your health in check if anything goes even a little wrong.".

Yamato invited Hikari to go over the plans one final time. If she had any comments, he would have listened to and discussed them first before moving on. Once everything seemed to be in order, Yamato moved to the part of the room that Hikari would lead them to, where the procedure would happen. "If both of you are ready, I think it is time. Get ready, Asahi, it might hurt. So, where do you want the seal?". Yamato waited for Asahi and Hikari to ready themselves physically and mentally. Once everyone seemed to be ready, Yamato infused the tip of his index finger with chakra, placed it on wherever Asahi wanted the seal. He waited for Hikari to join in for her part of the process, then started applying the mark.

Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO) Empty Re: Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO)

Sat Jan 22, 2022 6:30 pm
Sitting comfortably, sipping on the tea provided Asahi would hear the gentle knock.  Smiling he would stand and walk with Hikari to let the new person in.  He’d wave and then give his good friend a hug.  There was no doubt that whatever Yamato had planned it would go splendidly.  Never one to worry much about the things outside his control, he also trusted Yamato.  Once he’d let go he would notice the brief case, and move with the group.  At the instruction to get comfortable he’d sit back down on the couch and watch the two knowledgeable people do the hard work.  He’d go back to his tea.  At Yamato’s words Asahi would wave his hand in the air, “I’m barely listening.  This sounds way over my head anyway.  Great tea Hikari.”  He’d add, giving info that he did know.

They would spend some greater time going over before it would seem it was his turn.  At the bequest to get more comfortable he’d remove his shirt.  “So should I sit or stand?”  He’d be given his choice, and opting to cross his legs he’d take a meditative position on the couch.  He’d take his right hand and pat overtop his heart.  “If it pulls life force, or whatever, let’s go over where all energy moves through the body.  Plus, I don’t need any blemishes on this skin.  I’ve worked hard on it.”  He’d smile with his joke, still at his ease.  Nothing could go wrong…..

He’d close his eyes, and take several deep breathes.  His mind becoming clear, despite what was about to happen.  He’d long been able to meditate with some ease.  Despite his proclivities into the more….interesting aspects of life, clearing his mind had never been a challenge.  His grandmother had long taught him to commune with spirits and summon them up.  With it they brought all their trauma and emotions of death, adding one’s own to the mix was a dangerous combination.  He’d opened his blue eyes and gave Yamato a final nod.  The world washed away.

He’d feel the touch of the chakra laced finger tips touch above his heart, and then a warmth flowing through him.  His breathing began to pick up, it was as though fire was racing through his veins, though it did not hurt.  It felt……powerful.  Trying to reign in his breathing it continued to get faster despite his best efforts.  “I’m fine……this is fine.”  He’d say with a weak smile.  He could sense the nervousness in his friend and he didn’t want him to end his excitement.  The seal would begin spreading out, covering the section of his chest over his heart.  Thin blue lines of energy seemed to move outward as well, illuminating the chakra pathways of his body with the energy of the seal.  Nothing could go wrong…..

It happened all at once, the heat that had been moving through him, raising sweat to his brow went out.  A sudden chill ran through his body, as though all the heat had been sucked out in an instance.  A sudden sharp intake, and his blue eyes met Yamato’s.  “Ummm….”  Was the only words he could get out before his eyes rolled into the back of his head.  Due to the position of the Yamanaka’s fingers he’d feel the precise moment his heart stopped beating.  Head lulling forward, the Yagami Samurai would fall forward into his friend.

Above the chaos that was about to begin, a spectral Asahi looked down, feeling a deep pull somewhere in the region of his naval.  As though a hook had been placed, pulling him away from the scene.  “This…….is unfortunate.”  He would say before everything went black, then his eyes opened to something else entirely…..

Knock knock.

The winner of the race had just announced themselves, Hikari’s pupil-less orbs looked up from the teacups towards the inn’s room door where the noise had originated. In less than a minute she pulled the door open, instantly greeted with a ray of sun in human form as Asahi, with his blonde hair flowing loosely around his face and warm yellow kimono, stood before her and took her hand in his. She was a little taken aback at the sudden handshake, having expected a bow or wave for a friendly greeting rather than what was happening now. Despite having been surprised she would return his firm grip with one of her own as their hands wiggled in the air, although her grip was not nearly as strong as his. “Hello Asahi! It is a pleasure to see you again as well. Please come inside.”

Slipping her hand from his as she spoke she would then move out of the way to allow him inside her comfortable home as the sound of the kettle filled the empty space. With the door closed behind them her new friend had stumbled upon an usual sight: a wolf, standing near the hallway with his crimson eyes looking up at Asahi curiously. The man in question beamed at Kuro, quite excited to be in the company of a very good boy. “His name is Kuro.” Hikari said with a grin on her face before making her way towards the kitchen to save everyone’s ears from the roaring kettle. After his rather short introduction he would bow his head as a polite gesture of greeting towards Asahi, since he was unable to speak this was the best he could do to acknowledge others. Kuro followed his new friend as he got comfortable in their house, choosing to sit beside him on the floor.

“No, Yamato hasn’t arrived yet. While we wait for you please feel free to make yourself feel at home in the living room area, and I’ll bring the tea over in a moment.” Her voice called out followed by the sounds of tea being prepared; the soft pouring of liquid, small clank as the tea infuser was closed, a blip as the tea hit the steaming water in the teapot. A few more seconds passed before Hikari emerged from the kitchen carrying a silver platter by the handles, the three teacups, the teapot, and two smaller containers sitting neatly atop. She placed the platter down gently and poured a generous amount of tea into two cups before removing the lids of the two smaller containers to reveal milk and sugar. “In case you prefer to add anything extra to the tea I brought out milk and sugar.” She would then take a seat on the opposing loveseat, waiting for her tea to cool down a little before taking a sip. Hot tea was best served scalding hot, but patience was a must- she enjoyed not having her taste buds burnt off.

Knock knock knock.

Having just taken a sip of tea when the sound upon the wooden door reached her ears she quickly put her cup down on the table, walking alongside Asahi to greet the mystery awaiting them behind the door. Kuro wandered over with them despite already knowing exactly who the mysterious man was. Having been around Yamato quite a few times now he could easily recognize his familiar scent. The men’s greeting was full of life and spirit as the two blondes embraced each other in a hug, and for a moment it seemed as if this was their fated reunion after a lifetime apart.

Once the brethren parted a briefcase was now in full view, large and hefty as it was stuffed full of papers. Hikari could tell even without the use of her Byakugan the contents of the leather item; research findings, observation notes, all scientific papers to aid them in the experiment. His voice sounded strong and unyielding as he asked them how they were, as if he felt no fear or sense of impending doom at something going horribly wrong. Was he that confident in his abilities or did he deserve an award for best actor?

Hikari pushed aside her unnecessary thoughts and collected herself, trying to emulate how firm his voice had been as she gave her reply, “Hello Yamato! I am doing well, how are you? Oh and please, come on in.” The trio continued their small talk as they ventured further into her home once more, Kuro walked back into the living room and chose to sit furthest away from them in order to not be in their way. Hikari sat across from Yamato as he started to lay out papers on the other side of the table, away from the abundance of tea. She listened intently as he tried to explain in layman's terms what would happen during the procedure, although their patient wanted nothing to do with the medical talk as he contently went back to sipping the tea. “Thank you, I am glad you like it. It is a favorite of mine.”

She continued to listen as Yamato returned to revising their notes after the brief comment from Asahi, trying to calm her own nerves as they talked about their plan for the umpteenth time. Hikari knew the plan inside and out, which should’ve been enough to ease her worries, yet alas she found herself performing a mental pep talk. In her mental dialogue she was reminding herself it was just like any other medical procedure she had done, albeit with a few new variables. But what was medicine if not full of unknowns and curve balls?

“As Yamato said, you have nothing to worry about, Asahi. We have gone over this plan until it was perfect, and we are both experts in our fields.” Her eyes, now full of confidence and determination, made contact with Asahi as she spoke to help give him reassurance if needed. Even if she was still nervous, her experience in the medical field had taught her to control her emotions in front of the patient so as to not cause unnecessary panic and chaos.

With no final questions from either party the trio got to work on setting up; Asahi, after having removed his shirt, made himself comfortable on the couch by crossing his legs over one another, Yamato positioned himself in front of Asahi on the right, and Hikari walked around the table until she was sitting on Asahi’s left side. As Asahi’s hand went over his heart and he explained why he wanted the seal there, and she couldn’t help but smile at his joke, the simple humor helped her forget any remaining nerves she might’ve felt.

Hikari activated her Byakugan as Asahi took several deep breaths, the veins around her eyes bulging as her chakra flowed through them. Blue and lilac tinted eyes both met Yamato’s as they each gave a nod to signal they were ready to begin. Her eyes watched as her partner in this experiment enveloped his finger in chakra and moved it over Asahi’s heart, her hand guiding his to be directly on a tenketsu point as was discussed in their plans.

Chakra began to spread out from his finger into the body of Asahi, flowing over his chakra network. Her right hand pressed against Asahi’s exposed back as she examined his increased breathing and heart rate, feeling warmth wash over her cold fingers the moment they touched his skin. Yamato’s chakra continued to intertwine with Asahi’s, pulsating inside his body and causing his heart rate to increase even further. “It’s okay, your body is getting acclimated to this new surge of power. You are doing great, Asahi.” Her voice was soft as she spoke, the hand on his back slowly making circles to try and soothe his worries.

As Yamato focused on controlling his chakra within, the seal started to become visible upon Asahi’s chest at the same time as his chakra network surging underneath the surface, becoming visible even to the naked eyes. Hikari couldn’t help but feel a cold sweat wash over her, her eyes darting over to look at Yamato to see what expression he wore. Was his chakra network supposed to be as vivid as it was?

The world answered her unspoken question with a shiver and a bone-chilling gasp as Asahi muttered a single ‘ummm’ before falling forward. As he fell she wrapped her arms around his torso from his side, almost as if she was just giving him a side-hug and not holding a limp body. As he lurched forward but was stopped by the conjoined efforts of Yamato and herself, her eyes regrettably looked upward and were greeted with the sight of veiny eyeballs without his blue pupils.

Then in the blink of an eye, she was no longer holding the corpse of her friend, Asahi, but staring down at another lifeless figure. Beautiful crimson orbs stared back at her, their disappointed gaze unrelenting. Rain poured down all around them, both bodies drenched and as cold as ice. Tears met with raindrops as they turned her face into a dance floor, tangoing down before parting ways as they fell off her chin only to be reunited on the cheeks of the form in her arms.

Salzem.

As the name silently parted her lips she could hear shouting in the distance, the words too hazy for her to make out as she stroked the tender face of her little brother. Before she was sucked further into the abyss of her memories, her body jolted at the sharp pain coming from her left arm.

With a small gasp she frantically looked around, slowly registering the concerned looks of Yamato and Kuro as well as the locks of blonde hair clinging to her wet face. Kuro rested his head near her legs, having successfully done his part to bring her back to their reality. Shit…shit shit shit shit shit. Breathe. Okay, we can fix this. Just calm down. In. Out. In. Out. Several breaths later and she calmed her mind enough to think clearly now, ignoring the stinging pain in her left arm from Kuro using his canine’s to bite her. Having tried to lick her arm to no avail, his only choice had to be to shock her mind through sudden pain. Thus he wrapped his jaw around her bicep with enough force to break skin but not enough to cause injury to any muscles or bones. Even he knew that if she was going to save her friend she needed to be able to use her arms.

“Yamato, please hold Asahi up for me. I am going to bring him back.” She would wait for him to take hold of their friend before releasing her arms from his torso. Once he did as she asked she would perform several hand signs in rapid succession; Rat, Dog, Bird, Rat, Tiger, Rat, Dog, Bird, Rat, Tiger. Once her hands formed the last seal they would be enveloped in a blue aura and she would move around until she was able to put them over Asahi’s chest with her right hand above his heart and the newly formed seal. She stared at his heart with her Byakugan as she pumped virgous amounts of her medical chakra into his body, watching as it flowed through his veins and chaka network just like Yamato’s had. The only difference was that her chakra was forcing compressions upon his heart in order to bring him back from the dead, and infused his body with enough chakra in order to refill the chakra that had left his body when he died. In doing so she sacrificed part of her chakra, but none of that mattered as long as he was able to breathe again.

Seconds passed before she could feel a pulse start to pick up underneath her fingertips, her eyes moving from his heart to the empty orbs in his head. She was determined to not stop her jutsu until he opened those beautiful blue eyes and gave them an earful in his usual witty manner. Come on, dammit. WAKE UP! Fresh tears were beginning to stream down her face as she silently pleaded for the Gods to not let her repeat the history they flashed before her moments before. They couldn’t be so cruel as to make her live through another death she had the power to prevent.

Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO) Empty Re: Can You RICE From the Dead? (IO)

Hikari was a great host. It made the air in the room just a bit less tense. The irritating, invasive voice inside Yamato’s head was irrational. He pushed it down with mental repetitions of the entire plan. Hikari seemed much more comfortable on the outside. Whether that was true or not for her inside, Yamato wanted to believe it was.

Having spoken about the process to Asahi, Yamato was, for the first time in a while, at a loss for words. He couldn’t think of anything that was going to make the following minutes easier for anyone in the room. So for once, he chose to remain silent. The conversation and tea could both wait until the procedure was done and the stress that weighed on Yamato’s shoulders was gone.

‘We have gone over this plan until it was perfect.’

Above his heart. A risky place. When Yamato’s finger first made contact with Asahi’s chest, he knew this was more than a random choice. It was a promise. It was Asahi making himself vulnerable, putting his trust in Yamato. His hand trembled for a second. He took a deep breath. They had calculated everything perfectly. Nothing was going to go wrong. He moved his finger over Asahi’s skin, drawing lines that always ended back above his heart. Lines that Asahi couldn’t see but ones he clearly felt.

‘Um.’

In a glimpse, Yamato’s eyes met Asahi’s. It was the first time Yamato was getting such close look at them. He saw the blue take over even stronger than before, as his pupils shrunk to dots. His expression dropped. At that moment, Asahi’s emotions resonated and took over Yamato. Their eye contact wasn’t broken until his friend’s head tilted downwards. He looked… Powerless… Asahi’s body crushed into Yamato’s with the weight of a falling building.

‘I’m going to bring him back.’

Back? Back from what? Yamato was frozen in his place. Regardless of Hikari’s words (that barely registered), all he could do was hold his unmoving friend in his arms, his grip barely tightening around Asahi, trembling the entire time.

All he could do now was watch.

When you breath your last breath, when you see your friends for the last time, when you have that last sip of tea.......do you think it will have been enough?  Hundreds of thousands of interactions make up our lives, some with great meaning and others forgotten nearly as quickly as they are made.  We don't often thing deeply on these concepts.  Instead, the reality of life keeps our feet grounded, looking forward to only what life has to offer.  Only the bravest contemplating what is to come next.  To dwell on the land of the dead while the breath of life fills our lungs is a dangerous thing.  However, that time does come to an end, and then standing on the precipace of eternity.......that is when we think, maybe I should have thought about it a little bit more...prepared myself a little more......done a little more.......made a few more interactions......told the ones we love how we lived them, told our friends how we felt.....the luckiest of us will know we have done all of those things.  However, for the rest of us we will forget to savor that last meal......not knowing it really was our last.

What came next for Asahi occurred in fragmentations.  When he reflected on it later in life, there was no certainty that any of it had happened.  There could be no proof, and there was no going back without staying behind.  The image of floating above his body, above his friends well ingrained in his mind, the next thing he knew a hook had grabbed him and pulled him away.  The lands flashed beneath his feet, colors unimaginable filled his eyes, and the sounds......they still could be heard on sleepless nights for years to come.  When the motion stopped, he found himself sitting at a long wooden table.  The table was decorated with silver plates, on each of which a dish of the finest foods one could imagine.  At least, that was the initial impression.  Upon closer inspection, he quickly discovered he was not alone.  Many individuals sat at the table, but before each of them the scenery changed.

For some they had decadent plates of sweets, steaming sake bowls, the wood of the table polished to a shine.  For others, their plates ran over with maggot infested fruits, moldy breads, the dishes worn and calcified as though soaked in filthy water for time untold.  Even the wood of the table lacked varnish, rough and beaten, their bodies forced to sit on broken chairs.  He attempted to speak, to call out though there were no words.  Others would attempt and fail, some looked scared and some calm.  Looking about the room he could see little more than darkness.  The table seemed to be placed in the only open field of a thick forest.  The trees groaning against an imaginary wind.  Dark shapes moved between the branches, some man shaped, and some something fouler.  Above all it was the silence that was the most oppressive.  The only sound the groaning of those trees.....Haunting and deep.   Asahi tried to stand but found he could not.  He was not sure how long he waited but wait he did.  Before him was a simple dish.  A bowl seemingly half finished.  He wasn't sure how he knew, but he knew his meal was not complete, as though the chef had simply run out of time and threw what he had down.

Taking deep breaths, he let his blue eyes take in the rest of the individuals at the table once more.  Looking about, it quickly became apparent that the faces had changed.  Even as he watched individuals would change.  Those who took a bite from their meal quickly stood, a shadow leading them into the trees.  Some would abstain, before being pulled up and into the sky by seemingly nothing.  Others did not eat, but they did not move.  Their faces deteriorating as though ages were passing before his eyes.  Seconds moved like decades, with most only lasting a few before they'd finally relent and eat what was before them.  Those that made it past would have creatures of shadow surround them, the faintest of whispers reached his ears.  While his skin crawled with the sound, he could not pick up on what they meant.  De deeply wanted to know what those shadows held, yet a part of his mind told him it was best to leave them be.

It was getting harder to remember why he was there, the food beginning to smell all the more enticing.  Still, there felt like there was much undone.  Grabbing the chopsticks, he began to pick at the food, but before the first bite could reach his lips a sound hit his ear.  "Don't....."  Just one word, but memories flooded back of his grandmother long dead.  He could not see her, but he could feel her, the scent of Lavendar that had always filled her home seemed to just be out of reach.  A word crossed his mist filled mind..... Yomi no Kuni.........it was then that the shadows seemed to notice him for the first time.  Their approach brought with them a coldness never before felt.  Not simply of a lack of warmth, but a lack of being.   Eyes gone wide he could finally see through those shadows........

It was then when horrid things were whispered of what would happen should he not taste the feast provided that he knew he had died.  The faces of the Oni disgusting and cruel, mockeries of what humanity had carved on wood, closed in.  Their cruel lips slathered in saliva, crooked and piercing teeth brushing his flesh.  When all hope was lost, when the food was centimeters from his lips........he felt for the second time a hook behind his naval.  Before he was pulled upwards, away from the table, away from the Oni, away from the world of darkness he had been sent.....

Back arching, his chest pushed against Yamato forcing himself out of his friends grasp.  Hands rushed forward grabbing onto Hikari's shoulders their grip hard like iron.  Eyes flashed open, the blue returning.  His breath came out strangled at first, and then rapid.  Cold covered him, and then heat, and then cold again.  Jolts of electricity ran through his body.  The curse mark that Yamato had placed flared to life, covering his flesh causing an unwanted scream before it retreated.  Now just the three symbols surrounding his heart.  All through this his fingers did not release Hikari's shoulders.  Her hand still upon him, for one instant their chakra aligned and seemingly of one being.

For what felt like an eternity but was actually probably less than ten seconds Asahi let go of her, falling back to the floor.  The cool ground felt good, as a fever had gripped him.  Drenched in sweat, he breathed rapidly eyes beginning to dart around the room.  They held great fear at first as the faces of the Oni were transposed upon Hikari and Yamato, but then they would slow as familiarity returned.  Licking his lips, he attempted to slow his breathing, though that was a failure, he did manage a single sentence before his eyes closed again and unconscious sleep gripped him.  "You owe me.......some sake."

Asahi would lay unconscious and vulnerable.  Though very much alive.  If they moved him, he would not wake.  It would be many hours before Asahi would wake, and seemingly return to his old self.  Though, to those closest to him they would notice only the slightest of changes.  What had once been bright blue eyes reflecting the sky at the height of noon, now had the feintest shadow within.  Though the world of darkness had not claimed him, its shadows had followed him back......waiting to retake a soul that was taken back.

Was that just…resistance?

A sudden pushback against her fingertips alerted them that he was no longer in a critical condition. Hands flying forward, roughly gripping her shoulders. Under normal circumstances she would’ve yelped in pain as her skin was sure to have hand shaped bruises on it. None of that mattered as her lilac eyes made contact with sapphire gems.

Asahi had awoken from his eternal slumber!

He was reeling from shock, his body having been put through tremendous stress as his vital organs shut down and his brain lost functionality only for life to be breathed into him again. Those minutes without oxygen were fortunately not deadly, the only consequence he had to suffer through was resting and recuperating. It would take many long hours of sleep for him to feel replenished and rejuvenated again. A small price to pay for being brought back from the dead.

Her hands moved to lightly grip his shoulders as the curse mark began to spread over his body in a similar manner to how it enveloped him before his death, only this time he was able to withstand it and force the chakra back into the seal. When he screamed in pain before the seal was under control, she couldn’t help but wince at the loudness interrupting the otherwise eerily silent room.

As quickly as it had started it stopped, his fingers releasing their death grip upon her flesh before he collapsed to the floor. Hikari knelt down beside him, giving him space to process the traumatic event. Being on death’s door, seeing what it is truly like in the after life, would take a heavy toll on anyone’s psyche, especially if it was entirely different from what they had pictured.

“It’s okay Asahi…just take some deep breaths.” Her voice was soft, a look of sympathy across her face as his eyes darted worriedly around the room. She felt the hair on the back of her neck prickle, a sense of foreboding washing over her from how panicked and scared he was. Just what did he see while he was dead that made him this fearful?

Kuro laid down beside Hikari, hoping his presence might be of some reassurance to the man who had been quite intrigued about him not long ago. His breaths were ragged, as if he was fighting against his own lungs, and the terrified look on his face dissipated as he weakly told them their repayment for his suffering was sake. She gave a short chuckle at his comment, then her arms lunged forward to catch his fallen form once more; she easily caught him by the shoulders so he didn’t slam his head into the ground and concuss himself.

Light sounds of his breathing could be heard as well as chest rising and flailing naturally, bringing a sigh of relief to escape her lips. “He is just asleep. Everything that happened today must have exhausted his body and soul. Would you be able to please help me lift him up onto the couch, Yamato? That way he can have a comfier place to sleep than the floor.” She looked over at him expectantly, hoping he wasn’t in too much shock of his own to help her with caring for their friend. Hikari was not strong enough to lift a full grown adult up on her own.
