The mark of a demon[Hikari, Yamato]
Thu Feb 03, 2022 6:11 pm
Hayato wandered into the village from the outskirts. It was windy and grey in the Rice land's sky this morning. The cool air blew Hayato's black Haori and grey hakama causing them the bellow, but even then he marched onward. He held his straw hat atop his head for fear it would blow away. The boy had an appointment to make, and he would not be late. He wandered through the gates lifting his head to show his headband to the guard posted near by. With a nod he was let in. Hayato walked through the empty streets into the residential district. He reached into his sleeve to pull out a small note.
...come to this address, but be warned it is a risky procedure. He had received an invitation from Yamato Tanaka the now C-rank officer of Tanbo with which he was familiar. The man had been somewhat of a teacher to him. With his connections he learned a few jutsu including body flicker and the Shadow clone jutsu just to name a few. He would've taken much longer to progress his ninjutsu if it wasn't for his assistance. When he was informed of a way to become even more powerful. He couldn't refuse. He trusted Yamato. At least as he trusted any of his other shinobi acquaintances. He knew that he wasn't interested in seeing him lose his life. He would do his utmost to keep him alive.
The promise of power was enticing to Hayato as well. He had longed to be a worthy protector of Tanbo. A great man like the Komekage he'd heard about starting this village from noting, and keeping them out of conflict. He was also aware of the villages bustling economy and strong growth. He seen Konoha fall from much loftier heights. He didn't want that to happen to Tanbo. He needed power. Strength to surpass even the greatest shinobi. The strength to protect his friends.
He looked up at the door to the humble abode mentioned in the letter. It was certainly small, but he was confident he was in the right place. Knock, Knock, Knock His fist wrapped on the wood alerting those inside to his presence. I am here Yamato... He would whisper into the door. As he looked around to see if anyone was watching. He wasn't sure why he felt the need to be stealthy, but something about the air today didn't feel right. It felt heavy like he was being crushed by an unknown weight. Hayato saw no one, but the feeling didn't leave him.

Not too long after their successful attempt with kato was another appointment made, this time with someone she was more familiar with. They had shared an evening of drinking during the sake Festival with her student, Mikaela, and the other person joining them today, Yamato. This familiar, albeit still new, friend was named Hayato. He was to arrive any minute now, and as she had done so with all of their previous rendezvous, Hikari was boiling water in her kettle while waiting for her guests to knock upon her door in the inn. It was a sizable two bedroom place that the inn was allowing her to rent for the time being until she found a more permanent residence.
The whistling of the kettle drew her from her perch on the cream couch to the small kitchenette where the kettle was on the stove and her usual set up for tea was already laid out. Today the tea cups were white with light pink cherry blossoms decorating every side of the cup as well as the little teacup plates underneath them. After she poured the steaming water into the teapot she also poured some milk, honey, and sugar into smaller containers on the tray that the teacups were on in case her guests wanted to liven up their tea or, like Yamato did last time he was at her home, if they wanted to drink some milk with honey they had the option to do so. Hikari wasn’t a big fan of having milk by itself and preferred to mix it in with her tea, but she was not one to judge the tastes of others.
Kuro’s ears perked up at the sound of footsteps outside their door, the wolf making his way over to the front entrance when the snowy haired woman heard three knocks upon the wooden surface. She made her way down the short hallway to the door of the room and greeted Hayato with a warm smile on her face.
“Why hello! Come on in, you made it at the perfect time. The water just finished boiling for the tea.” She refrained from saying his name as he seemed to want to be more on the hush hush side of things with his whispering at the door. As she was speaking she moved aside so he could quickly come in if he was worried about anyone seeing him, and would be able to change his outdoor shoes into black slippers in the entryway. She didn’t mind if he didn’t change into them, it was just a nice courtesy she wanted to give her friends since she herself was walking around in her cozy slippers. If Hayato looked a little bit down the hallway he would see a black wolf with crimson eyes staring up at him curiously, although the wolf would be familiar to Hayato if he had any recollection of the drinking game they all played during the festival as Kuro had been present at the bar during it.
“Welcome to my home, Hayato. Please feel free to make yourself comfortable while I bring out the tea. Yamato will be here any minute now.” She would lead him down the short hallway into the living room where there was a cream couch, cream loveseat, a black recliner, a glass table, and a medium sized tv. Kuro walked over to the loveseat and sat down in front of it, getting used to their routine by now and knowing they usually didn’t use that section of the living room for the procedure.
Hikari disappeared briefly into the kitchen and returned shortly thereafter with the tray carrying the teapot, teacups, and assorted containers. She placed it gently on the table in front of the couch, although it was moved further away from the furniture to give them enough room for the marking. “I have milk, honey, and sugar in these little jars in case you want to add them to the green tea.” Her voice was soft as she looked over at Hayato, waiting for the tea to cool down before she took a sip from her cup.

Yamato’s strut was confident today. The last operation had gone swimmingly, and there was no reason to think the one today could have gone wrong. He was not even carrying all of his research with him like he had done the first two times. He had only brought the summarized notes. He walked up to the door he was starting to get familiar to, and knocked. Hikari presumably opened to door for him as well. If she didn’t, well, that might have slowed things down a little bit. Once the door was open, Yamato basically barged in. He was on cloud nine. "Hey Hikari!" he exclaimed loudly in a cheerful tone. Once he was inside the room and saw that the ‘volunteer’ had arrived. "Hayato! Hope you’ve made yourself comfortable.".
He walked up to the kitchen again. He looked around. Even though it was his third time for him, the place was a stranger to his mind still. He turned around and faced Hikari, connecting his hands in front of his chest. "Honey milk, please! I think it’s the secret ingredient.". It was clear as daylight how different a mood he was in, in contrast to the start of the last operation. "Feeling good today, Hikari..." he said, moving around the apartment to get his summarized research set up, "How about you?". He then raised his head to see how Hayato seemed, "And you, Hayato? You’re not nervous, I hope?".
If everything seemed to be in order, Yamato was ready to jump into the work. He waited for Hayato to find a comfortable spot for himself, then he sat near his volunteer. "This is the right time to decide if you’ve changed your mind. Otherwise, where do you want the mark?". If there were still no opposition, Yamato would finally start drawing the seal on Hayato’s body.

Hayato saw a familiar face once the door slid open. He nodded as Hikari, the girl he’d met before on a not so flattering night, let him in. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him before he changed from his wooden clogs to the black slippers offered. Hi Hikari…I didn’t know you’d be here… He took off his hat and laid it next to his shoes taking a look around. He saw the ever adorable Kuro waiting down the hallway and waved at him. Hayato hoped he would get to pet him. That was his first thought, but soon after he was curious as to her residential status.
This is a nice room, Hikari… He would say as she went off to collect the tea. He looked forward to it. Although he had a small cup of green tea with his breakfast, he would never turn down more tea. He sat on the cream loveseat, as Kuro came over and sat in front of him. Hayato's eyes widened as he reached down and ran his fingers through the dog's soft fur spending extra time behind his ears. Hikari would return with a cute tray with all the assorted tea fixings.
Hikari had quite the spread. Thank you for the hospitality… I thought this would be much more clinical… He simply added a little milk and sugar to the green tea offered to him.
Have you been staying in the village long? He would ask her before taking a sip of the tea. This is good… He would say it as a compliment to her tea making ability, before he listened to her answer. Not too long after, l there was another knock on the door. He would motion towards the door implying it was fine to let her next guest inside while he sipped on the tea.
Once she opened it, he would hear the booming voice of an upbeat Yamato greeting Hikari before he was greeted in kind. Hello officer Yamato, Hikari has been a most gracious host… He watched as the man moved around the apartment setting up what seemed like paper work. It was covered in drawings he couldn’t hope to understand, but he recognized them as medical and seal related. He sipped his tea and moved over to the couch, letting the man get to work until addressed. He didn’t want to disturb the cute little wolf.
I am a little nervous, but more power will help all of us protect Tanbo… He would say clenching his fist. Thank you for agreeing to do this. I will not be changing my mind. He responded before undoing his obi and sliding his kimono down about half way down his back exposing his pale chest, but being careful to not reveal too much. There was a lady in the room. He turned away from Yamato showing his flawless and slender back. He made sure all his hair was tied up allowing Yamato clear vision of the base of his neck. From this angle, some might assume he was female. At the base of my neck, between the shoulder blades please… He was a bit embarrassed to be half naked in front of people he barely knew and especially a girl, but he knew he didn’t want the mark to appear easily in battle. It would be easier to hide it if it was on his back. Or that was his logic anyway.
At first, he didn’t feel much. It was like Yamato was drawing on his back. Hayato relaxed a little. It seemed that the pain he expected wouldn’t come.
And then it did.
The seal was only a few lines at least that what he felt, but suddenly a throbbing pain coursed through Hayato’s body. It was unlike anything he had ever felt before. He could feel a malevolent chakra merging with his attacking chakra network. His very cells cried out in rebellion to the choice he had made. The normally quiet and reserved Hayato couldn’t fight back a primal scream of pain and rage as a black chained snowflake pattern covered a portion of his body. The pain traveled with it coursing through him. His body was oozing sweat more than he had ever sweated before. He felt his body temperature spike to the highest he had ever felt. His ability to sense others' heat faltered. Hayato clamped his eyes shut, but his throat remained open screaming and screaming until he collapsed seemingly at peace.
Hayato’s eyes blinked open and he saw a forge with a great flame. The figure of his father hammering metal into a blade at the blacksmith shop in Konoha.
F-Father!!! Hayato screamed. The boy had grown in size since his father had disappeared, but his heart had not let go of him. He attempted to move closer to him. To reach for him. To hug his father just one more time.
No matter how much he walked he didn’t get closer. The image receded further and further away. Hayato called out to him again and again. His father paid him no mind. He focused on his work as Hayato's screams got more muffled and washed out. His father’s image receded and the world grew white.
Hayato’s eyes once again blinked open, this time he was back in the room where he had been. He lifted himself upright, and glanced between the two. I-is it done? He managed to groan out, before he felt his body wracked with weakness. He was able to stay stable, but he hurt all over. He rubbed his face and felt tears streaming down his face. Suddenly Hayato was embarrassed, but what could he do? What was done was done, and he was tired. He listened to anything they had to say before making a request.
I’m afraid the walk all the way home may be… too much for me. He retrieved his coin purse shaped like a cartoonish chicken and withdrew more than enough ryo to cover a room. There aren’t any people in the room two doors down. Please pay the innkeeper for the room for one night and keep any extra…[b] If they accepted he would weakly hand them the cash, regardless he would make his way towards his accommodations after a few more words.
[b]Though I may not look like it… I am grateful for your gift Yamato. Thank you. Hikari, thank you for opening your home. He would stand and bow swiftly. Upon raising his head he would feel a bit of a daze from moving so fast and stumble.
I believe I need so-some rest… He would avoid the subject of his dream if at all possible. How he made it to bed was a blur. He wouldn’t dream at all that night. A blissful darkness would carry him into the next early morning.
Hayato would collect his belongings at the crack of dawn in silence. He would head out back towards his home. His mother must have been worried. He would come up with some excuse on his way there.

Yamato had his work cut out for him. He had performed the surgery completely successfully once now. Kato was a strong man. He had persevered through this painful process. He had allowed Yamato to practice and perfect his formula. All he had to do now was follow his previous operation perfectly.
It probably sounded easier than it was going to be.
Luckily, it turned out Hayato had a strong spirit as well.
A few minutes passed. It felt like seconds and hours at the same time. The operation required a lot of focus. But Yamato was more driven than he had ever been. He now had a clear path to victory. He just had to repeat his steps from the Kato Operation.
A few more minutes.
It seemed…
Was it?
Over?
Another success?
Yamato sat on his seat for a few seconds, checking the seal again and again and making sure it had actually been applied perfectly. He was in disbelief that his operation had worked once again. Yamato smiled at Hikari with confidence. “Almost perfect.”. He shook his head. “Sorry… Maybe it’s too early to brag about this… I’m just… Amazed it’s working. Once again, thank you for your help, and for letting us use your place for it on top of that…”. Yamato bowed gently, and after taking all of his equipment back, he left. Hayato, like others were either left to Hikari’s care or left in a room rented by Yamato. The Yamanaka walked out. There was still work to do.

Hayato’s surprised face made her chuckle, his words humorous considering it was her home they were meeting at. It would’ve been more strange for her to not be present at all, just letting her friends come and go as they pleased. “Aww thank you so much, Hayato! I’m really glad to hear you like my humble abode.” Her chirpy voice rang from the kitchen, gathering the tea and assortments for him. While she was busy in the kitchen, Kuro helped himself to scratches behind the ear from his new friend, his tail rapidly shifting from side to side and his tongue lolling out of his mouth when his mouth curled up into a grin, or as much of one as a canine could muster.
“Haha I am not surprised you thought that given how we described the process. I think having tea beforehand helps calm any nerves you might have, plus it can't hurt to keep yourself hydrated for the process too!” Hikari added a little milk to her own cup of tea before bringing the edge of the glass to her lips, blowing gently to cool off the top layer of liquid before she took a sip. “Aww thank you so much!! I’ve been here in Tanbo for about two or so months now. However, I hope to stay for a very long time here. It’s peaceful and the people here are very kind. Have you lived here your whole life?”
knock knock knock.
Light tapping on the door cut off Hayato’s response, and the snowy haired woman rose from her seat, her cup no longer grasped between her fingertips, “Ah excuse me real quick, that must be Yamato.” Hikari weaved her way around the furniture and opened the door, a familiar blonde popping through the entrance with a joyous smile across his visage.
“Hiya Hayato!” She matched his energy in her greeting, a big smile covering her face. “Aww, well Hayato has been the most humble of guests.” The trio walked back into the living room area, with Yamato continuing inward until he made his way to the kitchen and exclaimed he wanted honey milk. His childish antics caused laughter to erupt from her chest, and her smile widened. “How could I forget your favorite! Coming up in a second!”
Within seconds she retrieved the honey and milk and poured them into a new cup for her friend, who graciously accepted it. “I couldn’t agree more! I feel great and I know it is going to be a wonderful day, Yamato and Hayato!”
A slightly hesitant yet determined voice spoke up after her, wanting to become stronger to protect those he cares about. It was an honorable reason to want to undergo such a new and unheard of procedure, causing the kunoichi to see the younger shinobi in a new light. She wasn’t sure she would’ve had the same initiative when she was his age.
Her pupilless eyes averted their gaze as he began undoing his obi, instead boring holes into the wall to her left to give him his privacy while he adjusted himself for the seal. It was a common courtesy one should give to their patients, and even though this wasn’t a conventional setting for medical procedures, he was still a ward under her care until he was able to hold himself up on his own two legs. The last thing they needed was another Asahi incident, but of course they were far more prepared for such a case if it were to happen to Hayato.
Hearing his soft voice speak up again was her indicator that he was ready to continue with the procedure, her eyes turning back to confirm with Yamato. Once he started walking towards the younger person she would follow suit, until the duo were within arms reach of the dark haired boy. Together with Yamato they intertwined their chakra, similar to when they performed this seal on Asahi, and her eyes lit up with intrigue as the dark seal began to form on the nape of his neck.
Ahhhhh!
His sudden outburst caused her to flinch slightly, still not fully accustomed to the effects the initial sealing has on the patients. However, she did not lose her concentration of the chakra she was pouring into the seal. “Shhhh, it’s okay. It’ll be over soon.” Hikari’s voice softly tried to soothe him as he writhed in pain, the two chakra’s fighting within him.
Once the seal was placed, the two eagerly waited for him to wake up from the unconscious state brought about by the seal. While they waited Yamato chirped up, thanking her for all of her help and cheering at another successful experiment. “We’ve done it yet again! It’s all thanks to your amazing research and dedication to this seal. You don’t need to thank me, I’m more than happy to help a friend in need, and if I can help the patients as well then it’s even better! A win-win situation all around.” Her snowy hair danced in the air as she returned his polite bow with one of her own.
Minutes after Yamato walked out, Hayato’s brightly colored eyes blinked wearily at her, his exhaustion written all over his face. “No need to worry about that dear, Yamato already paid for the room down the hall for you. He had to go handle another matter, but Kuro and I can carry you to your room.” She helped him sit up before moving him onto Kuro’s back, the large wolf easily being able to carry his weight. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders to keep him steady and made sure to collect all of his belongings before they walked out the door. Hikari would make sure he made it onto the bed and had water on the bedside table, placed his belongings in a chair in the room, and then made her way back to her own room at the inn, her own mind drained from the hectic day.
