The Demand Against Sand

Mission: I Hate Sand

They live in the desert. They are surrounded by it. Why are people so surprised when the village has sand spread out across every street and in front of every building? Isuru wondered this as he walked out of the mission center. Several ninja squads had been tasked with managing protections against the worst of the desert surrounding the village. Living in the Land of Wind, it only made sense that sand would be carried in through many different means.

Either way, he had accepted a mission to handle a small pocket of sand that had begun to spread along the village's south side. Some kids had found a way to slip in some sand so they could build sandcastles as if they were at the beach. Isuru had never been to a beach before, so all he could imagine was if he reversed an oasis and it seemed like it would be awkward to be trapped on a small island of sand. It seemed even more odd that someone would stop and build castles out of sand while they were still trapped.

Isuru made his way to the area he was assigned and stopped short. The report said the kids had let in enough sand to cover a section of the road that traveled past the wall. What he was looking at was far more than a couple of kids could achieve. To him, it seemed like someone had taken a truck and dumped several tons of sand along the side of the wall. In the middle of it, a large castle made out of what appeared to be sandstone stood casting a shadow over the building nearby.

He took a few steps closer before a voice called out, "Ahoy! Don't be taking another step closer, unless you want a fight!" Isuru looked up to see a young boy waving a wooden sword around on top of one of the sandy battlements. Another smaller girl stood nearby looking unsure as she watched to boy call out. It was obvious to Isuru that the girl was uncomfortable. He wasn't sure exactly how they had constructed this building, but he knew that it, along with the rest of the sand, had to go.

"Alright, you've had your fun. It's time to pack it up and call it a day. This sand is becoming a real problem for people who live nearby, and we need to put it back out in the desert," he said. The two listened and the boy clicked his tongue and said, "you aren't the boss of us! And there's no way you can get rid of all this sand! It took us hours to move it all in here!" The girl tugged on the boy's sleeve and said, "c'mon! We agreed to leave when it was done. And you said we wouldn't get in trouble!" The boy shook his head and just said, "yeah, well there is nothing he can do to stop us anyways. We are in charge here!"

Isuru sized up the castle and the kids on it, measuring the distances and the size of the wall it was beside. He calculated the angles before he began to swing his kusarigama rapidly around him. The wind began to kick up, causing small torrents to form as it created a barrier of moving wind all around him. As the sound of wind gusts increased, the two kids stopped fighting and looked down at Isuru. The girl made a soft whine while the boy tried to yell down for him to stop. The wind cut the sounds of his yelling and silenced it just as Isuru swung his blade towards the base of the castle.

A dragon made of pure wind formed and struck the base of the castle, curving upwards within it and launching the sand high over the wall and out into the desert beyond. Another swing led to more sand being tossed over the wall. With each movement, he threw more and more of the quartz powder. In the middle of it, he directed a few gusts to follow under the kids' feet, catching them as the castle melted around them. As they came to the ground behind him, he threw one last dragon, spinning it to create a vacuum effect to gather the remaining sand. The dragon roared up the side of the wall and threw the remaining sand out into the sky to float off into the distance.

The wind around him calmed and the two kids pouted at the loss of their castle. Isuru gave them a soft shrug and said, "if it is truly valuable to you, then it is not gone. You still have the memory of it with you. Along with one another." The kids still pouted as Isuru made his way back to the center for his reward.
