Baenlin's Genin Exam

Baenlin began the morning of his genin exam as he would any other, with the sun in his eyes to wake him up. He rose without hesitation and began stretching out the muscles that he knew would cramp from experience with sleeping on the fringes of the training grounds with nothing but a second hand sleeping bag for comfort and warmth. As he warmed up his muscles he thought about what he would have to do today without the least bit of nervousness. This was simply another test, no matter that it could determine whether or not he had a future as a shinobi.
Soon Baenlin headed towards the academy, methodically rechecking everything he might have to do in his mind. At one point he toyed with the idea of making a clone of himself and then using the transformation technique to make him appear as another student there for the exam and walking in to the exam like that and only revealing himself once the instructor asked for the techniques. He dismissed the idea as overly cheeky and risky considering the person he would be fooling would be the one determining whether he passed or failed.
Baenlin's contemplations ended as he noticed he had mindlessly walked through the doorway to where the genin exams would be held. He focused his attentions back on the matters at hand and began to take in his surroundings.

Zokuza Hishitari, a chuunin of Kumogakure, made his way into the academy to host the Genin exams. He entered the class and with a list of names of the students who were partaking of the exams. He was a very strict teacher and wasn't in a good mood. He just hoped the students would impress him. He then called out the first name that appeared on the list, "Baenlin..." He looked at the class waiting for the owner of the name to stand up. "Please come forward and perform the 3 jutsu..." He folded his arms and awaited for Baenlin.

Baenlin’s closed his eyes and sighed at being called up first. "So it is up to me to set the bar, is it?" he said to himself as he slowly moved to take up the position in front of the instructor. He was glad of his choice to not try and fool this man. He seemed to be of a serious nature an such a tactic as he had planned would likely not have gone over well as he might have hoped. He felt the teacher’s impatience towards him start to grow in the moment Baenlin took to contemplate the man.
Baenlin tried to hide it as he started, but the knowledge that the other students behind him were watching as well as the instructor in front of him made Baenlin feel about as apprehensive as he ever had. He blocked out the feeling by quoting lines from various works the he had read as he started to form the hand signs perform the clone jutsu. Once the clone formed, Baenlin had to study it for a moment. It was the first time he had had the opportunity to see himself in several months. He looked more lean than he remembered, his hair longer, his skin darker and his face feral. He wasn’t sure if he approved of the image or not, but he had little time to consider it further now, as he knew he must continue the genin exam.
Baenlin forced himself to look away from his own unfamiliar image and took a moment to study the instructor’s. He didn’t particularly stick out in way, but Baenlin realized that could very likely be a strength for a shinobi, especially when one does infiltration missions. Baen could well think of another dozen shinobi in the village that could pass for this man on passing inspection. Still, the quality of this technique was determined in the details. The scars, the blemishes, the scuffs on the instructors clothing, any slight discoloration in every strand of hair on the mans head. Baenlin fixed it all firmly in his mind has he performed the hand seals to complete the jutsu. Baenlin always found this jutsu disconcerting because it always changed the way people looked at you, but still Baenlin kept the presence of mind to make his still active clone clap for him in support.
The instructor, however, did not seem impressed by this show. He had simply cocked an eyebrow in impatience at Baenlin. Baenlin matched the expression, and held it as he began pulled out a kunai. He flipped the weapon, once, catching it by the blade, and then again,this time higher to let it get in a further rotation to catch it by the handle. He flipped it a third and final time as high as the ceiling of the room would allow. Baenlin watched the ascent of the blade and waited until it was at it’s peak, where it went just high enough to graze the ceiling, before starting the hand signs for the third and final jutsu. As the kunai started to descend, it became clear to everyone in the room that it was aimed straight for Baenlin’s own head, as was evident by the quiet gasp that issued from several of the students behind him. Baenlin had his face turned up, watching the descent of the kunai while he formed the last hand signed. When the blade finished it’s descent, it drove into Baenlin’s face, right between his eyes. The impact drove his upturned down to the ground behind him. The gasp sounded again, only louder this time, just before the a poof of smoke and the sound of wood striking stone that told everyone even before the smoke cleared that it was a replacement jutsu working exactly as it should that they had witnessed.
While everyone in the room focused on the spectacle of Baenlin’s image being stabbed in the by his own mistake kunai, the real Baenlin had taken the chance to use the transformation technique again to hide amongst the other students still in waiting. He took the image of a genin kunoichi he had seen on the training fields the day before. The instructor might recognize the double, but there was very little chance that the other students would catch on. By the time the smoke had cleared and the log was revealed, Baenlin had already slipped into a desk on the far right side of the room, trying to put on he guise of surprise to math those of his fellow students around him. It was hard, considering Baenlin was having to fight has hard as he could to keep from smiling at his own success. Now all Baenlin had to do was waiting until the instructor either found him or grew tired of waiting for Baenlin to show himself.
