cleaning the orphanage Empty cleaning the orphanage

mission specs:

Kotonaru was still in the bathroom, he was practicing a water jutsu walled “water needles” appropriately enough. This jutsu was easy, he had already managed to get the water needles formed themselves within a short period of time. This was only from tap water, even. It was a little absurd really, how he ended up learning some of these jutsu on his own. Not in a bad way, he was just… different sometimes, forgoing the usual training grounds. Kotonaru practiced moving the water needles around some and when he felt confident, he decided to do an experiment. He happened to have 2 sheets of paper with him, having accidentally grabbed 2 instead of 1 when he was in the main library. This would prove helpful it seemed.

He held one of the pieces of paper in the air. Forming a water needle, he moved the water needle, using it to slice the paper sheet to shreds, occasionally nearly hitting his fingers. No injuries resulted from this fortunately. This was not too bad it seemed, he was already able to mostly do the jutsu. Now for the other thing he wanted to try. He folded the other piece of paper into a small square and tossed it into the air. Forming a water needle he quickly moved the newly formed needle and attempted to spear the piece of paper in the middle. He was not quick enough and the paper fell to the floor untouched. He tried again, this time moving the water as fast as he could. He managed to clip the edge of the paper. Unfortunately, missing his mark still would not help him later on so he tried it again. Perhaps three times would be the trick. He tossed the paper and speared it with his water needle. He smiled. Perhaps the road to becoming a chuunin would be easier than he had thought.

Speaking of which, it was time for him to do another mission. It would be hard for him to get a rank up if he had not done very many missions. He walked off to the mission office again as he had a little earlier. The job he ended up getting was obviously a cheap ploy to make someone do some literally dirty work. The orphanage was apparently in need of cleaning. This should be fun, and that was intended to be sarcastic.

Kotonaru read the details for the mission, not that there were many for this type of mission, not at all. He walked through the village, coming to a stop outside the gates of the orphanage. The orphanage looked clean from the outside, though it seemed the garden was a bit of a mess.

Fortunately all of the kids had been taken outside to play or something like that, the older kids were helpful enough to either help corral the kids, or were convinced to help Kotonaru do some of the simpler tasks, he found that while many of the kids were toddlers or similar, the older ones were at most around his age, and none of them wanted him around. Perhaps they found ninjas to be frightening presences. Kotonaru had generally found other kids his age to be far less mature than he was, though he had to admit that no everyone had seen their family slaughtered before their own eyes and had to take care of themselves entirely for several years growing up. Nope, most people did not have to go through what Kotonaru did unless they were involved in the ninja world. Then again, most kids did not want to involve themselves in that kind of thing. The ninja world was a step or three above the average playground brawl, though Kotonaru had seen some of those become rather vicious as well.

Kotonaru worked away in the afternoon heat. Sweat rolled down his face, soaking the upper half of his clothing, making him look almost exactly like the kids from the orphanage, the difference being the Konoha headband. The height was irrelevant, the older kids in the orphanage, the twelve year olds, they were generally Kotonaru’s height, to his slight annoyance. These kids said nothing about his height as he cleaned up the orphanage garden but from their speech it was obvious that they thought he was their age…. Frankly this was something he honestly hoped would be fixed later on as he got older. His parents had been average height after all, and it seems he had gotten the short genes that had skipped his abnormally tall grandparents. Well, that was not his fault and the most he could do at this point was to go and eat his vegetables every day. That and doing chin-ups since those might make him taller, as the gravity hopefully stretched his body a little. He had not seen improvement yet but there was always hope.
Kotonaru finished cleaning up the garden, and turned his attention to the outside of the orphanage. This would be simple but annoying and long. The orphanage exterior seemed to have been grafitti’d, and removing it was extremely hard. Kotonaru was able to find some paint. He whitewashed the outside of the orphanage to the original colour, having to give it multiple coats in many places so that the black paint did not show through. This took the better part of two hours, and his ninja training came quite in handy. He was able to walk on the undersides of the roof and such, able to clear out old wasp nests and the like that mere mortals would not be able to reach.

The outside was the simple part though. After making sure all the other kids were outside playing or whatever they were doing. He walked inside and gasped in horror. The entire orphanage looked like a landfill. He truly did not want to think about what some of this… stuff was. If some of this stuff was what he thought it was then it was a miracle none of the kids had died from infection, gotten seriously sick, or frankly, caused a pandemic across the ninja world, or at least Konoha. Yes, it was seriously that bad. This took him 5 hours to clean out, easily more than he normally would take for a mission of this ranking.

After finishing with the help of his water clones, Kotonaru stumbled back to the office and reported that he had completed the mission, the orphanage was clean. Then he ran to the bathroom….
