Vixen scrutinized the text with narrowed eyes, her fingers worrying the edges of the parchment. It was such a short message, so carefully scripted with rich black ink, so simple at first glance. However, within the strangely pleasant interactions was a sense of deep-set urgency and danger, something that made Vixen uneasy. Something that made her excited.
It had been far, far too long since the last time she’d dealt with such a mission.
However, Vixen wasn’t sure if she should take it.
Oh, don’t get her wrong. The reward itself was quite the hefty sum. Fifteen thousand ryo per nin signed, sixty thousand altogether… Her payment alone would be three times the amount of a generic S-Ranked mission. Add in the fact that, should a party member die during the mission, his share would be split between the living members… It was incredibly tempting.
Nevertheless, it was incredibly dangerous as well. Vixen would be required to spend several months undercover, gathering intel and investigating the situation, before ultimately plunging in and destroying a group of incredibly powerful individuals. Of course, these bandits used very few chakra-based attacks, but their strength was overwhelming even so. They were crafty, strong, and skilled in their fields of battle… and they were known to be especially cruel to enemies. Should she be caught without an escape plan, Vixen would be killed on the spot - or worse. It could be much, much worse than death with these men.
Vixen smirked as she scrawled her signature across the bottom of the request.
Wealth and danger? Of course she was going!
---
One week later found Vixen approaching the designated meeting point, about an hour and a half’s run away from her temporary residence. It was a rather unremarkable area, simply another coordinate on the grid in terms of location, but it was made special by a large oddly-shaped boulder by the side of the road. With the marker half-hidden by forestry, Vixen nearly missed it, but a cool voice addressed her from the side.
“Number four, then?”
Vixen turned, her gaze sharp as she scanned the man over. No village allegiances to be seen, but that was to be expected (the request called specifically for wanderers, and specifically for those who were invited directly). The shinobi before Vixen was at least six feet tall and obviously fit, his strength made clear with every little move he made. He had dark hair, not a buzz-cut but trimmed for convenience, and lively green eyes that spoke nothing of the deep scars across his left cheek. Though dressed for work and level in his address, the slight smile tugging at his lips gave his disposition away. Vixen decided he was alright, as far as teammates go.
Plus, it was always interesting to see a man with six katanas on his back.
“For Grass Country, yes. I assume it’s what you’re referring to?”
“It is, indeed,” the man said, tossing a smile far too kind for a shinobi to express. “I go by Chimura during office hours, and you’re Vixen, correct?”
At the kunochi’s alarm, Chimura’s smile only widened further. “I’ve heard of you - and your work. You aren’t the only one that’s traveled, you know.”
It was true. Now that she thought about it, the shinobi, while not as obvious as Vixen’s own uniqueness, had a bit of a foreign glow to his features. Perhaps a half-and-half mix of Japanese and otherwise, which could explain his knowledge of other territories. Vixen had to admit that she was slightly flattered that her name was so well-known on the other continent, but it was a bit startling as well. How had he even made the connection?
Luckily, Chimura found it fit to continue speaking on his own. “Honestly, I was a pretty big fan. Admired your means of… accomplishing your goals. Your cleanliness, brutality, efficiency… And from someone so young! Though, I don’t actually know your age. I actually chose my penname-”
“Penname is a new way of putting it.”
“-after yours. You know, going along with the whole mythical creature thing - Vixen, Kitsune, same difference. I always hoped I’d meet you, and now I’m your teammate!”
Vixen really wasn’t amused. Sure, it was nice to hear the compliments, but this whole interaction was bordering on unprofessional (and unsettling - was this how famous pop stars felt half the time?). “You’re awfully open towards strangers, Chimura.”
“We aren’t strangers!”
“Actually, you’re pretty strange.”
Chimura pouted, and Vixen ignored it. “So anyway, you called me number four. Where are the others?”
“They got here earlier and went exploring, apparently. Said they’d meet us in the first town.”
“...How unfortunate.”
---
About an hour had passed before Chimura finally stopped talking her ear off. Really, his original cool exterior was such bull, but despite her aggravation, Vixen did find herself genuinely amused from time to time.
It was reluctant amusement.
A few branches passed in silence, the two shinobi traveling at speeds dizzying to the average person. Vixen knew she shouldn’t be getting tired, and had her strength not been sealed months prior she wouldn’t be. However, as it stood, she was slowly beginning to lose her breath. Despite this, she had to discuss the mission itself with Chimura.
“So how strong are our opponents, anyway? Assuming you’ve learned anything else.”
“I wasn’t informed of more, no, but I’ve heard rumors of the bandits during my travels.”
“You seem to hear a lot of rumors.”
“Yeah, well…” Chimura shrugged as he looked at her… and nearly missed the branch in front of him as he did. Vixen couldn’t help but to snort a small chuckle, especially as her comrade began to blush.
“Shut up…” Chimura muttered. “Anyway, I heard that, except for a few precautionary measures and low-ranked jutsus, they’re about equal to untrained civilians in terms of chakra power. However, they’re strong and very, very fast. Traps, poisons, spies… And they know how to handle their weapons.”
“So do I, Chimura.”
“Touche.”
Another few branches passed in silence, mostly due to Chimura’s concentration on not missing another branch. He’d done it a few times already. Eventually, Vixen spoke again.
“How long are we expected to stay in Grass Country?”
“As long as it takes.”
---
By the time the sun began to dim, the shinobi had fallen into a comfortable silence. A meal and a few minutes of rest had rejuvenated Vixen, leaving her decidedly less fatigued than before. However, she soon grew tired of her own thoughts, and Semira was being oddly silent.
Speaking of…
’Alright. It’s been hours and you haven’t made a single joke about Chimura.’
’I was waiting for the right time.’
’You suck, Semira.’
’I’m literally not even going to say it.’’
’...Anyway. I’m sure you know that I lost my progress with Meigan when my power was sealed.’
’You realize I’m literally your Meigan, right?’
’I’m going to ignore you. Anyway, we need to work on that.’
’Youneed to work on that. I mean, I’m pretty in touch with, you know, myself. Again, I’m literally your bloodline.’
’If you’re so fantastic, why don’t you just fix the link then?’
’...I don’t feel like it.’
’You’re so annoying.’
Semira didn’t bother to continue the conversation, probably coloring a messy picture in… whatever universe she inhabited. Does a mind really exist as its own dimension? Semira was probably located in Vixen’s.
Ignoring the fact that Semira was most likely doing something aggravating, Vixen began searching for the tendrils of Yuumei chakra floating through her system. It wasn’t too hard, especially since she had already done this once before. The fact that she was previously conversing with the chakra’s consciousness also helped solidify the link. As bored as she was, the kunochi figured it was a perfect time to begin restoring her bloodline bit by bit. Plus, she didn’t remember it being too difficult as a child. Pain was a given, but wasn’t too severe - right?
Vixen felt herself falling into a semi-aware autopilot, a state of mind that moved her efficiently but allowed her to focus within, concentrated on her thoughts unless Chimura spoke again. In this state, Vixen was acutely aware of her own being. She could feel her chakra moving within her, mixing with the Yuumei, grasping the foreign energy and wrestling it for dominance. The kunochi had learned this sense of self-awareness early in her life and was quite thankful for it in the end, despite the practice it required to perfect. It helped immensely with learning techniques.
As Vixen reached further into herself, searching for the alien energy, it began to grow more restless. She could feel - physically feel - the swirling torrents of angry darkness within her. It seemed to focus in her stomach, twisting and vaguely ripping more like the ghosts of rapid dogs than playful butterflies, but Vixen persevered. She clung to the bulking tendrils like a rider to a spanish bull, bracing against the pain and refusing to falter as she continued alongside Chimura.
One would expect the embodiment of dark energy to be a cold thing, freezing and icy to the touch. After all, that’s what dark was - the absence of light, of energy, of heat. Darkness was the chill in the air and the frigid, gripping feeling of a midnight battle royal. Of course it would be cold.
However, Yuumei was fire. Vixen never could figure out if it was so cold it was scorching, or if it was simply smoldering, something like the black flames of Amaterasu. Whatever it was, it felt as if her core was a volcano, expelling the white hot - black hot? - magma of Yuumei into her veins. Though faint at first, the lava grew in intensity. It filled her and poured through her body as it tried to wrench itself from her own chakra’s grasp.
Hot, hot, hot, and yet the chill of darkness remained as well. Perhaps those theories on Yuumei’s temperature were true after all, because while the heat washed over her, the frost began to seep from below the wave. Vixen had forgotten the sheer cold of the Yuumei, having only remembered the heat. The combination was nearly enough to make her stop, but with years of pain tolerance practice behind her, she persevered. Vixen continued alongside Chimura dutifully, her teeth gritted and her steps faltering minimally.
She used her chakra like claws, sinking them deeply into the dark Yuumei inside her. The kunochi pulled, yanked, dragged the chakra into her own system as it tried to pull itself from her grasp. With a tug too hard for her weakened state to handle, it ripped itself from her grasp - but not for long. Soon, Vixen had reclaimed her grasp on he Yuumei. She fought harder and harder to keep it, more so than last time.
Even as it ate her from the inside out, burned her alive, she refused to let go. The Yuumei might have been its own consciousness, but they were a team, a team decided at birth and destined to be one in the end. However, Yuumei was a feisty chakra, especially when by Semira’s brand. It fought back with a vengeance despite its inevitable fate, biting against the bit to remain free of all control. The dark chakra was as wily and raucous as a mustang and Vixen was all too aware of the hooves raining down within her.
Just as last time, Vixen began to hear wailing within her mind. It was Semira’s voice, her unique little whine as irritating as ever, but the voice was also undertoned with something deep, gravely and terrible. Though perhaps Vixen and Semira were allies, the natural instinct of the Yuumei was enough to overpower the conscious personality it developed over time. Relationships between the Yuumei and holder were worth nothing when bonding was first initiated. The instinct told the Yuumei to fight for freedom, and by Kami if it refused.
Vixen fought to block out the screaming with her own blocks, but Semira wouldn’t quiet. It began to feel as though nails were being driven into her skull from the force of the voice, and with the liquid fire still wrapping around her limbs, it was only a matter of time before Vixen would stumble. Finally, with a particularly shrill crack in the Yuumei’s voice, Vixen gasped aloud. She clutched her skull, eyes shut against the pain, and missed the branch she had been aiming for.
“We’re almost the- Vixen?!”
The sensation of falling was unlike anything else, Vixen noted idly. Of course, it was not an unfamiliar feeling, but it was an unsettling one all the same. Distinct, inevitable. It was the same feeling that came with the sound of a gunshot, especially one directed at her own body. Familiar, yes, and she knew what to expect. Pain, injury, weakness… Trying to dodge the bullet or save herself from the drop would only add to the inevitable severity, as there was nothing to catch herself on. The kunochi was even without her cushioning jutsu. She had no way to stop.
Nevertheless, the moment her foot missed the branch, Vixen had fully caught the Yuumei. It wriggled in her chakra’s grasp, trying to free itself but far too trapped to break out once again. The kunochi hoarded it to her, bonded with it greedily even in the midsts of a freefall. As the feelings within intensified and quickened, the actions of the outer world felt as though they moved in slow motion. A beat, then two, then three in her chest, and half of the Yuumei was her’s. Four, five, six, and it was a part of her. Vixen and the Yuumei were one, once again, a body of two minds, a being of two souls. It had been far too long in Vixen’s opinion since she had felt whole. It had been far too long since she could see the image of Semira’s face.
In her mind’s eye, the cocky brunette smirked, her lanky arms moving to rest on her waist. ’Took ya long enough, babe~’ Semira said, and Vixen couldn’t even find it in herself to be angry. ’It’s nice to see the world through your eyes again.’
’It’s nice to see you in general.’
’Nice views all around. I’d like to be looking at prettyboy’s rear.’
’Why aren’t you?’
’...Because you’re falling out of a f^king tree, Vixy.’
’Oh yeah.’
Vixen braced herself for impact with the forest floor, being far too close to do anything even if she could. However, just before her back should have collided with the ground, it instead fell into warm outstretched arms. The strong limbs caught her effortlessly, instinctively bringing her close as their owner skidded to a stop.
Chimura panted, less from exertion and more from the surprise of it all. Vixen, too, found herself panting, but she wasn’t quite sure from what. It was only with his worried quirk of his brown that she was wide-eyed and tense as well. Carefully, she schooled her expression back into it’s chilly default.
Chimura smirked as he looked down at her, his cheeks red from exertion or embarrassment or something Vixen couldn’t really define. “Aren’t I supposed to be the one that falls for you?”
Vixen literally just snorted.
---
“So, uh, Vixen…”
“Yeah?”
“Your, um…”
“I’m waiting.”
“Your eyes are, uh, well…”
“....Spit it out…”
“You’re eyes are glowing!”
Vixen blinked once, twice, before deactivating her Meigan. She didn’t even realize it was on! However, she supposed she should have. With the power receding, the kunochi could sense the difference in power in her eyes. “I… suppose they are.”
Chimura shot Vixen a quick look of curiosity before turning his focus back to the trees. “So… Um. Why?”
“Bloodline.”
“YOU HAVE A GLOWING EYE BLOODLINE…!”
“Heck.”
---
“Are we there yet?”
“No.”
...

“We’re no closer than we were two minutes ago.”
“Yes we are.”
“Stop.”
...
“What about now?”
