Genin Exam Final Stage: Sparring!
Tue Sep 06, 2016 7:18 am
Having demonstrated her ability to perform the techniques requisite for graduation from the academy the day previous, Tsubaki was informed a new requirement was put in place by the Mizukage of Kirigakure no Saito: a sparring contest between academy students. Up until this point, Tsubaki’s training had been almost wholly in the classroom setting besides for a field training in medical jutsu. This would be a trial by fire, though one she was entering more well armed than most. While many had only academy jutsu at their disposal, Tsubaki had been undergoing private tutoring. Even with that slug, Hyuuga Hinoki, slowing her sessions down; she was sure to be ahead of her fellow students.
Perhaps that was why she was the only one in her small group who was able to keep their calm. Then again, perhaps it was the years of etiquette training that allowed her to keep her emotions hidden. All she could say for sure was that her group looked like a sorry bunch. There were four of them, one taken from each instructor's course, who would be split off to fight each other one on one. She wasn’t sure if it was to be an elimination match, but she did know that losing now was not an option. While none of her family was on hand to watch, she was sure that her performance would be reported on. It was time to determine who would fight whom.
An instructor she didn’t know by name came by with bowl with lots in it and asked each one of them to reach in and draw one. Down the line he went, the students pulling out a small slip of paper each. “Now, open your paper and read aloud the number you were assigned one at a time.”, the instructor said as he returned to the front of the four of them. Each in turn opened their paper. First was a skinny boy with spiky black hair and beady black eyes.
“Ichi.”, he announced, holding up his slip of paper with the number one. The next to go was a chunky boy who had yet to lose his baby fat. He gulped nervously before opening the envelope. “Nii.”, he announced, looking entirely relieved not to be fighting the first boy. The third was a girl of smaller stature with long brown hair tied up with a red ribbon. “Nii”, she announced, leaving just Tsubaki who no longer needed to open her paper.
“Ichi.”, Tsubaki responded with a nod. She felt confident in her ability to take any of them, but the first would be the best among them for her. If she were to fight the other girl it would have been thought of as a handicap for her gender. The fat one would be seen as soft and undisciplined. No, the first one with the beady eyes was the best for her. No one could say she didn’t win this fair and square.
“Ones will be first. Step into the ring and when I call it, you may begin.”, the instructor in his flak vest called out so they would all hear. The twos retreated to the nearby bleachers to wait their turn and watch the fight as Tsubaki and her opponent made their way to their respective start lines. “This contest will go on until a knock out, a ring out, or I call for the match to end. You may now begin.”
The instructor wasn’t one for embellishment. He would have made an awful fight announcer. Tsubaki began simply by fishing a kunai out of her left hip holster by looping her index finger through the ring. She held it point down and out in front of herself in a defensive posture as she activated her byakugan, turning her crystal blue eyes into orbs of pure white. The veins alongside her temples bulged as the chakra flowed through them to her eyes. The world slowed down just a bit more as her vision pierced through the depiction of her guileless opponent. He had drawn a kunai behind his back while holding his other hand out in a manner as to say, ‘come get some.’ She could see through his feignt though, that wasn’t a martial stance as much as it was a decoy. He’d try to draw her in and then stab while she wasn’t paying attention.
She advanced forward, shuffling her feet in a way such that they never crossed. They cocky little shit than grinned at her, feeling confident due to her cautious approach. “What’s the matter? Afraid to fight me?’, he taunted. He was already in her trap.
They closed the last bit of distance to each other mutually and quicker than before. She supposed his quick movements were supposed to draw her eyes away from his kunai knife. Not a chance. He swung in with an exaggerated movement with left, striking errantly and high. He just wasn’t as quick as he thought he was though, for she lowered her stance while stepping in. She pivoted her hips to get full extension out of her strike, pushing her palm out sideways as she sent the chakra down into it to form the ‘needle’. At the shoulder, where the arm met the torso, there was a tenketsu. She drove her palm for it, striking at his left side where his kunai was already moving forward in a counter attack. But no more.
Her strike wasn’t hard as far as strikes go, but its real effect was felt by the other student as his arm dropped limp. Where he had intended to run in close and stab her in the belly, he instead was stopped by an opponent who was braced against his charge. His arm fell to his side, useless, a kunai clattering to the floor of the circle.
An expression of pained surprise overcame the beady eyed, would be trickster. He was clearly trying to figure out what was happening as he fell backward in a defensive posture. With his good hand he reached for another kunai knife, but not fast enough. Seeing him retreat, Tsubaki lowered her right hand to the pouch at the back of her right hip and came up with a shuriken grasped between her fingers. As quickly as she pulled it, she flung it after the retreating student. Her aim was the forearm of his good arm, exposed as he reached for the weapon.
The shuriken impacted and drove its sharp point deep into the students forearm to the sound of him screaming. Apparently he had never felt the pain of being stabbed before. As deep as the point could go would still be a shallow wound, nothing that couldn’t be healed. His beady little black eyes flashed full of fear, and Tsubaki saw her chance. It was time to put an end to this.
The boy began to retreat further as Tsubaki dropped into her stance. She had only begun to study the sixty four palms, but she was certain that she need not be able to complete it to finish him. The instructor could see the way the wind was blowing however, the break in morale of the one student and the stance from the other. Tsubaki had just taken her first lunging step, fingertips pointed with the chakra forming upon each as the instructor came between them in a flash. She was sure the boy couldn’t have made it out, but her eyes did. The momentum of her movement was such that she had trouble pulling up short and bumped into the instructor instead.
“This match is over. I declare the winner, Hyuuga Tsubaki. Congratulations upon your commencement to Genin. Please see the quartermaster one your way out about your forehead protector.”, the dour instructor went on in his monotone with a hand on her shoulder before taking a step back so that the two were not in full contact.
The girl, now shinobi, known as Lady Crane; blinked and returned her eyes to their normal state. That was it? That was the dreaded final exam? She walked away half stunned, to whispers from the other two students who had watched the bout. Was she that far ahead of her peers? Perhaps Hinoki wasn’t as stupid as he seemed. Even he could put up a better fight than that, she was certain. She made her way to the quartermaster's office and approached the window.
“Hyuuga Tsubaki, reporting as a genin to receive my forehead protector.”, she said to the man stationed behind the glass, a student no more.

Ren stealthily walked up behind the girl as she was talking to the proctor, A headband in hand. "Good job out there Tsubaki, I wasn't sure you'd make it through on your first try, but you really are a prodigy" Ren would say to the girl. Assuming she turned around he would toss the headband to the girl before continuing "As Head of the academy I hereby declare you a full fledged Genin, may you bring prosperity to the village." after giving the girl a brief smile Ren would turn and wander over to console the looser of the fight.

Alright so 800 subtracted from 1400 is 600, meaning 3 stats + 15 stats from ranking up to genin + 1 free (dont have to train) specialty for Tsubaki.
Lots of love for Ren.
Approving 18 stats, 600 words towards one of the two jutsu trained above (or 500 + 100) and a free spec.
If you have questions, feel free to post them here or PM me. <3
