Jounin Exam 3 Empty Jounin Exam 3

Mission Details:

Mission Link

Senshi moved through the village at a sedate pace watching the people around him as he did so. His recent promotion to Jounin, compounded with the recent announcement of the war had kept him insanely busy. He had been forced to tell the Genin that he had been with for his first two Jounin Exams that they needed to reschedule several times. That had been rather understanding or at least had come across as rather understanding which had been nice. He had not explained to them, that he was now a Jounin and did not need to conduct the exams anymore, but he felt that since he had not completed him that he should do so.

Being a Jounin was a rare thing in any village, being sure to show that you had earned it was incredibly important to the recently promoted young man. As he kept moving he turned left walking into a bar-b-que restaurant that was rather high class compared to where he normally ate at. He felt that he owed the Genin a bit extra since he had been forced to put them off and had work them rather hard during his first two missions. As he walked in he looked around the dimly lit area before seeing the three Genin sitting together towards the back of the restaurant. None of them were facing him, all had their backs towards the entrance and it caused Senshi to shake his head slightly.

He didn’t know what they were thinking by being so relax, and throwing their guards down. He watched his footsteps as he approached them, and as he finally came into their perifials, Aiko gave a light squeak in fear and surprise as he sat down. Raising an eyebrow he looked to both Josei and Shujin, but before any words could be spoken the waitress stepped up. “What would you like to drink sir?” Senshi looked at her for several moments out of the corner of his eye before responding, “Hot green tea and a glass of water, please.” She nodded before turning and heading to get his drink choice. Senshi looked to the Genin before assessing them quietly.

Not a lot of time had passed between their last mission and this one, though the last time a minimal amount of time had passed these three had managed to improve greatly. From what he could see, none of them looked as though they had improved much. Looks didn’t always tell him everything though, and he could tell based on their chakra levels that they had improved some. Not nearly as much as last time, but then he expected that they had probably taken a break due to the dangerous and tedious nature of the last mission. Leaning back in chair, Senshi accepted the drink as the waitress placed it down in front of him.

“What would you three like to eat?” Senshi was pleased, not only by the service quality of the resturaunt, but also by the waitresses pleasing voice. “I’ll have grilled fish and asparagus please.” She nodded towards him before writing down his order, Shujin then spoke up, “I’ll have bulgolgi please.” She gave another pleasant nod before turning her attention to the two females of the team. “Can I have chicken katsu please?” Josei said, her little girl voice piping oddly in the rather upscale restaurant. The waitress took note of her order before turning her calm gaze onto Aiko. “Uhm, can I have chicken ramen please.” With a polite nod she indicated the orders on her note pad before offering them a polite bow and walking away.

The three Genin continued to stare back at Senshi awkwardly, and completely quiet. It seemed the three had agreed to let him start things off and didn’t want to intrude on that. Which was rather to surprising to the bearded young man, since it seemed likely Shujin would not have gone along with such a plan. Shrugging it off Senshi gave the three the best smile that he could, given that he wasn’t really one for that sort of thing. “Thank you all for coming, before I get down to the specifics I’d like to thank you again for the hard work you did on the mission.” The three nodded seeming to enjoy the praise from the man who they had easily learned, did not give it out so easily.

“Now for a bit of back story, my Jounin exams will be permanently placed on hold after this due to the fact that I have been promoted already and that we have the upcoming war.” He paused letting the words sink into the group before them. They had easily noticed the Jounin vest he was wearing now, so that news would not come as a surprise. “I will still be completing the Jounin Exams as I can, due to the fact that I think the experience would be invaluable for me to gain. So be prepared, if we all survive the War we will pick them back up post haste.” He could see a grin on both Josei and Shujin’s faces at the thought of getting to continue training not only with the Jounin exams but also for the war.

It was clear that Aiko was much more reserved in both, but Senshi had gathered that from her general personality after the first Jounin exam. After all, it wasn’t too surprising, most medics weren’t about fighting anyways. Though they could become forces to be reckoned with on the field due to their medical knowledge. “After our meal, we will head to the training grounds. I want to do a final training session with you all before we are placed on hold. The proctor that has been following us will join to watch, in order to assess how I handle training shinobi.” Not that Senshi really needed to be graded on such a thing.

He was probably one of the best trainers of shinobi in Kumo due to the amount of times that he had done it with everyone around him. Senshi was finally done with his speaking and he sat back, wondering if he should bother getting to know the three better. It wasn’t something that he particularly cared about, but it would help them bond more as a team. That in itself was worth listening to their goals and desires and the like. He forced the urge to sigh irratatedly away before he spoke again. “In order to better understand each other I want each of you to introduce yourself. Tell all of us a bit about yourselves, family, goals, hobbies, likes and dislikes. Anything you think would benefit the team to know and understand you better.”

Aiko seemed to perk up at the idea of talking about something as mundane as each other, but again that wasn’t quite so surprising. Before any of them could begin the waitress returned placing down all their plates of foods for them. Senshi lifted his cup of hot green tea and took a sip before he nodded to Aiko, indicating she should go first. She was at least the most interested in it, so it made sense to allow her to set the precedence for the rest of the group. “I am Kimyona Aiko, my mother is a doctor and my father is a nurse.” She paused as she leaned forwards to take a bite of her food, the others had already begun digging in.

“I have an older brother whose following my mom’s foot path and a younger sister who wants to follow our father and be a nurse. I choose the shinobi life because I wanted to be a medic on the front lines and really be able to help.” She paused again, blushing as she spoke. She was going into a rather large amount of detail that he wasn’t used to. “I enjoy gathering flowers and making arrangements and gardening. I dislike fighting or even killing.” She stopped speaking and fiddled with her chop sticks for several moments before squeeking out her final words. “That’s it.” If Senshi were anyone else he would be hard pressed not to smile at her odd behavior.

But he wasn’t and he didn’t find it amusing instead he moved his eyes to the next student in line, which happened to be Josei. He inclined his head to her, waiting for her to speak. Meanwhile he continued to consume his good, they were all eating at a rather quick pace. It seemed the Genin wanted to get to the true fun part of this, the training. “I’m Yakkaina Josei, my mom isn’t alive anymore, she was a Jounin before Lord Raikage took over. My dad’s a Chuunin, and a taijutsu specialist, it’s why I want to be a taijutsu specialist too. I don’t have any other family.” She finally paused, to take in a breath of air from speaking so quickly.

She offered a beaming smile before continuing, “I really like training, especially taijutsu techniques. Though I’m also kinda interested in weapons too.” She gave a nod towards Senshi when she said his and he merely nodded back waiting for her to go on. “I wanna be a Jounin one day, just like my mom! You’re turn Shujin.” Senshi turned his eyes to the final Genin of the bunch, having just finally managed to finish his meal. He returned to sitting back against his chair in order to watch those before him better. Assessing the Genin and the way they spoke was really the best way to observe them. Though he hadn’t really learned much about them, he was learning how to better motivate them.

Making Aiko feel as though she could help a person would motivate her to train harder, while using Josei’s mother would motivate her to try harder. Plus Senshi could always approach the girl’s father and speak with him in order to better train the girl. He wasn’t sure if he had ran into the Yakkaina patriarch but he would make a point to hunt the man down before he continued with the Jounin exams. If only so that he could better understand the girl before him. Senshi finally nodded towards Shujin to let him know to go.

“Furigan Shujin. My parents are dead, I live with my aunt and uncle and seven cousins. We’re all in the shinobi program. My Aunt runs a ramen shop, and my Uncle’s a Chuunin. Most of my cousins are either Genin or Academy students getting ready to be Genin. I like music, playing instrument and trying new foods. My goal is to be an awesome ANBU Captain one day, and I really dislike hypocrites and people who are favored just cause their special.” He ended his words with a glare at Senshi as though to indicate he fell into one of these categories. Senshi wondered if he should bother to introduce himself as well, but then he had asked the Genin to do so, so he should at least follow the orders he had given them as well.

“Kobayashi Senshi, my father is a black smith and I have three siblings. Two brothers and a sister, my brothers are following in my father’s footsteps, while my sister is training to be a lady in waiting.” He paused watching as the three finished their food and lifted his hand to indicate to the waitress to bring the check. “My Uncle was a Jounin, other than that I had no other relatives in the shinobi force. My goal is to simply serve Kumogakure as best as I can.” He took a breath, taking a sip from his green tea and finishing it off before he continued. “I dislike sweet things and people who are lazy. I like training, weapons, and polite people. My hobbies are reading, cooking, and training as much as I can.”

As he finished speaking the waitress placed the check on the table and Senshi lifted it up forming hand seals and pulling his wallet from the storage dimension he had. Placing the ryo on the table with a tip he put the wallet with ryo back into his storage dimension before finally speaking. “Let’s head to the training grounds, training starts now. While you head there I want you to keep an eye out for anyone stalking you. You will note the number of people and their location if you can, you have fifteen minutes to get there.” They immediately moved, heading towards the entrance. Senshi waited quietly for a full minute before he took stood up and walked out of the restaurant.

As Senshi moved he brought his hands up forming three rather simple hand seals as he did so. Ram, Horse, and ending on the Ox hand sign. He had been intending on furthering his capabilities as a shinobi and one of the things that all shinobi needed was complete stealth. To this degree he had found a technique in the Kumogakure library that would assist him in doing so. It was a wind based technique that would assist in eliminating all sound from his foot steps. Something that he considered vitally important considering that while he was rather quiet, no one could ensure that they were completely silent all the time. His training in stealth would only enhance the utility of this technique.

This was the best time for him to practice it, since he was going to be stalking the three Genin and seeing if they noticed that he was following them. To that degree it would afford him the chance to practice the technique. Considering that it was a simple E rank technique he did not think that he would need very long in order to ensure that he could use it in combat. With that in mind, as he finished the hand signs for the technique he manipulated his chakra changing it into the wind form and then circling it around his feet as he moved. He focused on dispersing the small noise his feet made as they impacted the ground and was pleased to find that with every step he was decreasing the amount of noise he made.

He walked sedately for the first few meters of practicing the technique before finally picking up his speed and moving through the village in chase of his would be students. It didn’t take long before he had caught up to them, deciding to stay several meters back to keep an eye on their progress he continued to use the Wind Style Quiet Footsteps technique in order to ensure his students couldn’t send him. Just shy of the fifteen minute mark his students entered the training ground he had designated for their training, all of them gasping for breath. He paused on top of a tree branch overlooking them, waiting for any of them to notice him.

Senshi was both pleased and disappointed in his students, they had field experience that most Genin lacked already but they were still rather inexperienced. It took them just under five minutes to catch their breath and become aware of their surroundings again, and consequently notice that he was watching them from his perch. He saw the three straighten in surprise, all turning to face him. With a slight push of his legs he landed in a crouch in front of the three looking them over quietly for several moments before he spoke again. “How many shinobi did you spot enroute to here?” The three looked between each other, before leaning in closer and whispering amongst themselves.

Senshi stood quietly in front of them awaiting for their answer, when finally Aiko stepped forwards hesitantly and answered. “Seven, we saw seven.” Senshi mentally went over the route playing it back through his memory and counting the amount of shinobi. They were correct, but then they were also wrong. There had been seven shinobi, but they had forgotten to count their temporary instructor in that number. Frowning slightly, Senshi shook his head in the negative. “Incorrect, there were eight. You forgot to count me.” He could see a look of resignation pass through their faces, and anger on the lone male students face. Ignoring that Senshi decided to dole out their punishment before they could think too long on it.

“A hundred push-ups, sit ups, squats, lunges, and pull ups to help you remember to be more vigilant next time.” With that Senshi let his body drop to the ground catching himself on his hands and began to knock out the push-ups. The Genin took a few seconds before they too joined him on the ground, it would do them well. Not only would it reinforce the lesson he was teaching them but at the same time they would be able to warm their bodies up for the training session that Senshi had in mind. One had to make sure that they were properly warmed up after all, or else they could injure themselves. As Senshi worked through the exercises, his mind went over a seal he was intending on using against the Genin.

The Barrier Confining method seal. It would prevent them from escaping an area, and Senshi intended to use it to further pound in the idea of vigilance. His plan was to lure them through a set of traps, and then trap them within in the seal and set off more traps. The seal would prevent them from being able to dodge as effectively by confining them to a limited area. The problem was in laying the trap before they noticed it. He wanted them to notice the trap and avoid it, since that would mean they had learned the lesson he was attempting to impart onto to them. But at the same time his pride wanted him to successfully employ the trap against the Genin, in order to show them the dangers that a fuuinjutsu specialist had and impart his lesson of vigilance onto them.

Constant Vigilance and all that. Senshi’s brain replayed the information the book on seals he had been reading on the technique had imparted to him. The seal was a rather simple one to draw out, the problem was is that is required laying out four seal trap tags around an area. Once he had done so he could connect himself through the seals via his chakra, and activate them when he chose to do so. A major drawback of the technique was its generally weak power, his own chakra could boost the power of it, but not by much. Shinobi who had more chakra than him would be able to break free from the barrier relatively easily. Not to mention, another fuuinjutsu specialist could simply unseal the barrier if they knew an unsealing method.

On top of all that, should he be working with someone in a team they would be trapped inside the barrier as well. The barrier would only allow the person whose chakra was tied into it to freely move through its walls. With that in mind he would need to ensure that if he ever did use the technique against another shinobi and he was working in conjunction with someone that they either made it outside of the barriers range first, or that they had some way to save themselves from whatever trap he laid within it. None of the draw backs made Senshi want to give up on learning the technique and learning to effectively employ it however.

All techniques had their draw backs, this one was just par for the course. While shinobi with high chakra might be immune to its confining ways, there were plenty of shinobi who did not have the chakra levels or the fuuinjutsu knowledge needed to escape it. Case in point, his wayward little students. They definitely did not have the chakra or the knowledge to escape it and as such he would be able to lay his little trap. Their only hope in escaping it, was going to be if they’d learned from this short lesson so far. Chances were, they had learned, chances were also high that it wasn’t going to matter anyways. If there was one thing Senshi truly excelled at, it was setting traps and drawing people into them. As his capture the flag game with Reizo, Komon, Komori, and Max had shown.

Senshi has moved through all the exercises as he thought on the Barrier Confining method, jumping up to grab a tree branch and do his pull ups. As he finished the final one he released himself from the branch landing lightly on the ground. Discreetly performing the tiger hand seal, his chakra spiked for a moment pushed off all the dirt that had accumulated on his body. He crossed his arms as he watched the three Genin complete their own exercises, all three now sporting a fine layer of dirt where they had laid in the grass. He could see the slight incredulous look in their eyes as they spotted his completely clean clothes.

A rather useless technique, the Chakra Cleanse was, but while it was useless in battle it did had one major positive to its name. He could use it to always appear presentable for anyone around, no matter what he had been doing beforehand. This would be useful on certain missions and in showing that shinobi of Kumo were not affected by things as much as others. If he could have a serious battle and come out of it looking completely fresh then people would think Kumo shinobi were stronger than they actually were, thus resulting in more missions and more money for the village. “Our training is going to be a mock mission. I will be an enemy shinobi, and your mission is to locate me, capture me, and return me to this clearing. You will be given fifteen minutes to plan, I will be given a one minute head start on you. Your time starts now.”

Senshi turned and started walking away from them, not intending to give them a chance to ask any questions. If they were going to continue assisting him in the Jounin Exams then he needed them to be good enough to operate on their own with little information. They would need to extrapolate the information they needed from the little they were given and find a way to work around a scenario. He did not expect them to stand up to Chuunin or Jounin alone, but as a team they should be capable of taking down a Chuunin level shinobi on their own, or stalling a Jounin level shinobi long enough for him to assist. His goal was really to shore up their team work so that the three of them could operate effectively and cover each others weaknesses.

Plus giving them added experience in working through problems together and in fighting would only benefit them in the long run. As they were now, none of the three were Chuunin level, he wanted to bring each of them up to that level before he finished with his Jounin exams. Training three Chuunin for the village would only make it stronger in the long run, and with the war on he figured it was the best thing that he could do. The time passed quickly for Senshi, and once fourteen minutes had passed he jumped into the trees and took off. He trusted the three Genin to actually wait out the final minute, but even if they didn’t he was confident in the fact that he was going to defeat them.

Rushing through the woods, he quickly reached his top speed, aiming himself towards his favorite training ground. The one that he had used in the capture the flag match with his fellows. He made sure to purposefully break branches and leave foot print indentations as he was moving so that the Genin would be able to track them. He didn’t want the entire exercise to be wasted on them simply looking for him after all. It would make things rather boring if that were the case. Once he was half way towards the training grounds, where he planned to lure them into a trap with the Barrier Confining method, he paused forming the hand seals and creating two water clones.

His original self and the water clones worked quickly setting up a make shift log trap in order to surprise the Genin. Once that had been completed he turned and the three of himselves resumed their trek towards the location of his planned ambush site. He stopped several times along the way to set up more traps, and once he had set four traps he heard the far off sounds of crashing logs and a minor explosion. It seemed the Genin were moving faster than he had planned, since the sounds indicated that it was coming from the area of his first trap. This pleased Senshi since it meant that the Genin were more effective than he had originally thought. He had figured he would have more time since none of the three specialized in tracking, but since that wasn’t the case he would need to start moving faster.

The Genin couldn’t be allowed to catch up to him just yet. Expediting the set up of the trap he and his clones continued moving, nixing any plans he had of setting up more traps along the way in order to get to the small clearing. It was the same clearing where he had faced down Komon, Komori, Max, and Reizo when they had played their capture the Senshi game. The small lake sat off to the side, and Senshi intended to use it to boost his water techniques in order to send more attacks at the Genin. The water techniques would be low powered and a good test of the Genin’s dodging abilities, and their endurance. He sent his two water clones to start setting up a trap inside the barrier.

The traps were simple, just blunted kunai and shuriken meant to take the Genin down with bruises. Senshi went back to concealing his presence and hiding behind some brush while he waited for the Genin. He occasionally sent chakra pulses out tracking their chakra signatures once they got within 100m. He smiled slightly as he heard the yelps of the Genin as the finally entered the clearing. His water clones had hidden in the small lake, pond thing and with all three of him waiting with anticipation he watched as the Genin looked around. They seemed to have been following the small signs he had left behind to track him.

Finally, one of his clones jumped out of the water drawing the three’s attention. Senshi noted with a mild amount of pleasure that Aiko was still keeping her attention on the area around them just in case the clone was a trap. Which it obviously was, but they didn’t know that for sure. The clone stare at his Genin impassively before any of them could say anything thought the clone dashed forwards drawing the Heaven’s Sorrow Ninjato on its side. The Genin scattered backwards, breaking apart so that each of them would be facing the clone from a different cardinal direction. Senshi rather approved of their choosing to do so, as it would force to clone to split its attention between all three while also only putting one of them in danger of injury.

Unfortunately for them, that second clone then shot out of the water forming hand seals as it did so. Senshi watched as the water needles lashed out at the Genin, only able to target two of them while the original water clone went after the third. The Genin moved backwards coming closer to where he had set the sealing trap and he smiled preparing his chakra to activate them once all three were inside. Unfortunately he noticed, that he may not be able to get all three inside the barrier. Aiko had managed to maneuver away from his clones and was no where near the other three.

Senshi watched as one of the clones burst while the other managed to push his ninjutsu and his taijutsu based Genin backwards into the sealing array, getting trapped within it himself. Senshi closed his eyes and pushed his chakra out finding the sealing tags quickly. He felt his chakra expelling out into the sealing array forming the correct shapes in order to activate it. Once it had done so it jumped out to the next tag forming through the array faster than the last time before jumping again to the next tag. The process repeated itself until it was inside all of the tags and suddenly a dark gray barrier appeared around the Genin. Senshi moved out from the tree line quietly watching as his male Genin began forming handseals and his youngest, smallest Genin launched a few punches and kicks at the wall of the barrier.

It didn’t seem to be affected at all but Senshi was surprised when a huge water dragon rose shakily from the lake and then shot towards the barrier. He wasn’t sure that the barrier would be able to take the hit from the water dragon and his hands formed the ram seal and he shot forwards far faster than he normally moved. He pulled his huge sword Gureto from his back as he did so initiating the Great Cleave attack just as he lept into the air. He watched as the water dragons head met the edge of his blade resisted for a moment and then the next he was slicing the water monster in half landing in a light crouch as the water dropped around them.

As he turned he noted that his clone had been destroyed and he eyed the two Genin in the barrier before turning his cold eyes onto Aiko who was staring in stunned horror at both what he had done and the barrier. He could see a slight shake in her legs, as he spoke he directed most of his attention to her. “Surrender. All three of you, or I’ll set the explosive tags inside the barrier off.” Senshi could see the two inside the barrier arguing furiously before finally both shouted out their answers. Senshi nodded at their acceptance to their loss while he eyed the frightened Genin who had managed to not get trapped. She looked down at her feet shaking slightly before whispering her surrender as well.

Senshi sent out his chakra ending the barrier, as he did so he spoke “Front and center, now.” The three appeared before him and Senshi glared for several seconds before finally relenting. “Take a seat, lets go over the exercise together.” They nodded, immediately sitting before him criss cross applesauce style, to which Senshi assumed the same sitting postured as them, laying Gureto beside him as he did so. “Shujin, tell me where you think you three went wrong.” The boy looked conflicted for several seconds as he thought before he finally spoke, his voice vaguely hesitant. “We just rushed in to the clearing. I guess, we could have left one of us or even two in the woods spread out around the clearing. That way we could have set a trap for you.” Senshi nodded to the boy in affirmation which earned him a rather rare smile from him before he turned his attention to his youngest Genin.

“Josei, what about you?” The girl looked at the other two briefly, before looking down at her hands and taking the time to think through her answer. Finally she looked up and spoke, her voice more confident than Shujin’s. “We were just reacting to you the entire time, we should have forced you onto the defensive and not let you continue to pick the territory to fight in. We left all the momentum of the fight up to you instead of dictating it on our own terms.” Senshi actually gave the girl a slight smile and nod at her assessment. It only showed him that he had been correct in choosing her to act as a team leader in his absence. Her assessment showed that she had not only been studying on her own, but also that she had more combat experience than the others.

She was definitely far closer to making Chuunin than the other two were, he hoped that he analysis showed them that they themselves should start working more towards that rank as well. Kumo needed all the Chuunin they could get in their time of war. “Good, you’re starting to show the qualities of a Chuunin. Keep that up. Aiko, why were you so frightened at the end? Could you think of no way to save your teammates?” The older girl, and medic of the team, flushed in embaressment at his words before looking down at her feet and nodding hesitantly. As she spoke, he could almost hear the tears she was fighting back. “I was…. I was afraid they were really going to die… because…. Because I was too weak to help them. I’m… I am not strong like they are.”

Senshi resisted the urge to sigh, and wished he had someone like Max or Akihana-sama on hand to help with this issue. He was really no good at handling these emotional type things, but he knew that as a Jounin it was something he was going to need to learn to do. He closed his eyes briefly as he thought what Akihana-sama or Max would do in this situation. What would be the best way to help her consider her failures without knocking her down too much and perhaps making her quit the shinobi program. He couldn’t afford to have any shinobi dropping out right now, not with the war and how short handed they already were. Finally, he opened his eyes and as he spoke he focused on making his voice as nice and un-gruff sounding as possible.

“Aiko, you may not have Josei’s physical strength or Shujin’s ability with Ninjutsu but you too have your own skill that they do not possess. While, yes you three failed in your mission, you have all learned more about how to operate in a field environment. You have gained valuable experience and no one was hurt from it, you should consider this overall a success.” She looked up from her hands, the surprise and shock on her face at his tone and words clear as day. If Senshi were any other shinobi he might have stared back at her with annoyance. He could be… sentimental too. HE understood emotions, at least intellectually. Feeling them not so much, though he could feel them, they were just muted severely.

Especially since Akihana-sama had left, and he had not had anyone really to keep him in check with them. He found himself regularly pushing them off, letting them get farther and farther from him. The closest he had been to emotions, other than irritation and anger, was when he had been around Max. After several quiet minutes in which Senshi was sure the three Genin were reflecting on the mission, Shujin finally looked him in the eyes, curiosity written all over his face. “Hey… uh Sensei what was that barrier you used anyways?” Senshi blinked surprised for a moment at the title he had been given, he certainly had never expected them to call him that but especially not from his prickly male Genin.

“It is a fuuinjutsu know as the Barrier Confining technique, it is primarily meant, as you saw, to trap a someone in a certain area. If you apply traps and such as I did into the barriers area you can hopefully take an opponent out before they can find a way to break out of the seal. In the least you can use it to distract and enemy while you set up something else or wait for back up.” The three Genin nodded at his explanation. Senshi hoped that at least one of them would become interested in Fuuinjutsu after seeing the way he use it. The village could certainly use more fuuinjutsu users. Especially since techniques like the one he had just used were incredibly useful for all sorts of missions. Senshi knew from his studies that barrier techniques like he had used were relatively rare, even for fuuinjutsu users.

It partly had to do with the fact that they were rather difficult and a specialty among the fuuinjutsu branch. The seals required of the barrier technique he had used were not used in any other technique that he had encountered thus far. They required time to be draw out and prepared, time to implement, and the ability to lure an enemy into the area first. Not to mention they were rather prickly seals within themselves, and did not like to work well with other fuuinjutsu. It made it difficult to find seals that would allow other fuuinjutsu to work around them. All of the books had touted how the technique wasn’t that useful, and Senshi realized against stronger shinobi it wasn’t.

At best it would work as a delaying tactic, that wouldn’t last for more than a minute or so. Though a minute in combat could be the difference between life or death, Senshi knew that the cost of the technique, the time to implement it, and the amount of studying it had taken to learn it wasn’t really useful for most shinobi. HE had other intentioned behind learning it though, at least he hoped they would work out. The barrier fuuinjutsu was just a step in that direction. Though he wasn’t too surprised that it had worked well against Genin level shinobi. Any decent Chuunin should be able to shatter the barriers walls like paper. Still it could be used to protect himself or a structure by absorbing at least some of the damage of a jutsu or an attack.

At least that was what he hoped for. Senshi focused back in on his students as he could see that Josei was trying to get his attention. She had pulled a scroll from one of her pockets and was holding it up, looking rather shy which was surprising for the girl. “Uhm… Senshi-Sensei, I was learning to play an instrument and thought maybe we could all work on it. You know to help us bond more as a team?” He blinked at her, wondering what the point in learning to play an instrument had but then he recalled that some Genjutsu and wind techniques could be activated by sound. While she didn’t seem the type for either considering her skills with taijutsu, it was something probably nice to have in her arsenal.

He gave a tentative nod, wondering how this was going to turn out. She smiled brilliantly at him before opening the scroll and unsealing four guitars from it. She handed one to each of them before picking her own up. Senshi stared at the instrument in his hands awkwardly for several moments before looking at the girl. She had pulled out several papers and placed them on the ground. While part of his mind was listening to her instructions on what the weird drawings, music notes, were he was also thinking on his fuuinjutsu. Maybe he could work with the barrier technique he had just used, mix it with music and make it some sort of disorienting thing.

He knew the seals woudn’t allow him to set a trap that would also go off with fuinjutsu but if he tweaker a few things he may be able to make it so poison could be released inside the barrier. Or he could make it so sound was enhanced and make it disorienting for the opponents, work it in with something like the Genjutsu willow technique and force them to see double. It was certainly something to consider in the least. Finally he tuned back into Josei as she was showing them the different cords. His hands followed along strumming the guitar slightly awkwardly as all four of them practiced the different notes and cords required to play the guitar.

He wasn’t really interested in learning this but he could see how the other Genin were relaxing and seemed to be enjoying the impromptu music lesson. Maybe there was something to be said for these sorts of hobbies. He wondered briefly what Max would think of this, and decided the boy would probably enjoy something like this. Maybe he should pay a bit more attention so he could play something for Max. The boy had done a lot of thing for him and Senshi had failed him when he needed him most. The least he could do was bring something akin to joy to the boy by playing. He focused more in as Josei explained how to bring the cords together.

She then handed them each their own paper telling them that they would each play their part, and they had to sing the words. As they started, many mistakes were made, especially when it got to Senshi. He didn’t exactly understand what singing was and instead of singing he simply spoke the words like normal. Josei immediately interrupted him as the other two began laughing. “No, no, no Senshi-senshi. You gotta sing, like this.” She started playing her part and then began to sing along, her high voice not really matching it well. “Would you go with me, if we rolled down streets of fiiiire. Would you hold on to me tighter, as the summer sun got lighter.” She stopped looking up at him again with a smile. “See like that Senshi-sensei.”

He sighed before nodding and mimicking her playing the same cords and this time singing the part, like she had. Only his voice being deeper and far more gruff seemed to suit the song much better. They all continued to practice until finally, Josei smiled. “All right now let’s each play our parts okay?” They all nodded, and Senshi looked at the Genin surprised that they seemed to be having fun like he had seen kids on the play ground having fun all the time. He had never considered something like this fun, he still didn’t but he was willing to learn in order to make the Genin feel more comfortable with him and each other. It was important that these types of bonds occur so that they could fight for each other better when the time came.

He was willing to sacrifice some of his time one something as pointless as this in order to make it so that the Genin worked better together. It was the entire point of this mission, anyways. He would have rather done another exercise or mock mission, but he could see that something like this was probably just as important. Maybe this was what Akihana-sama had meant when she had been trying to talk to him about these things. He still didn’t really understand, but he accepted it for what it was at the time. She was obviously more experienced than him so she had to know what she was talking about right. Finally they all started each playing their parts and singing when it came time to do so.

“Would you go with me if we rolled down streets of fire
Would you hold on to me tighter as the summer sun got higher
If we roll from town to town and never shut it down

Would you go with me if we were lost in fields of clover
Would we walk even closer until the trip was over
And would it be okay if I didn't know the way
If I gave you my hand would you take it
And make me the happiest man in the world
If I told you my heart couldn't beat one more minute without you, girl
Would you accompany me to the edge of the sea
Let me know if you're really a dream
I love you so, so would you go with me
Would you go with me if we rode the clouds together
Could you not look down forever
If you were lighter than a feather
Oh, and if I set you free, would you go with me”

Senshi sighed slightly awkwardly just before his part came and then he sang it, trying not to sound irritated. Considering he was singing the last portion when he finished the three Genin all clapped laughing and talking to each other. He blinked in confusion as he felt a warm feeling spread from his chest and he too felt the urge to smile. He stared down at the three Genin, before looking at the Guitar the feeling of confusion he felt spreading. He hadn’t ever really felt this way before, but he believed that he had been extraordinarily pleased that his Genin were happy about what they were doing. He didn’t really know how to explain it. “Senshi-sensei can we do another song please?” He blinked before nodding awkwardly, for some reason he felt rather shy.

He didn’t show it instead burying it down and focused as Josei brought out another set of pages and handed them out. Explaining a new set of chords and things like rifts to them as they began to practice. This time the song was a bit more difficult, as they had to move their hands a lot faster as they played and even smack the side of guitar. Senshi was rather focused on making sure he was gentle enough to break the side of the guitar or snap the strings. He even felt himself beginning to smile slightly as he too relaxed into the joy of practicing with the guitar with his Genin. This time they all learned their parts much quicker and with Josei directing they began their littler performance. Singing along with each other as they did it, instead of focusing on their own parts.

“Hey girl, you make me wanna write a song
Sit you down, I'll sing it to you all night long
I've had a melody in my head since she walked in here and knocked me dead
Yeah girl, you make me wanna write a song

And it goes like ooh, what I wouldn't do
To write my name on your heart, get you wrapped in my arms baby all around you
And it goes like hey, girl I'm blown away
Yeah it starts with a smile and it ends with an all night long slow kiss
Yeah it goes like this
Hey girl, you make me wanna drive you home
Get you outta here and get you all alone
I don't know what it is about you, baby
But I'm all messed up and it might sound crazy
But you make me wanna write a song
And it goes like ooh, what I wouldn't do
To write my name on your heart, get you wrapped in my arms baby all around you
And it goes like hey, girl I'm blown away
Yeah it starts with a smile and it ends with an all night long slow kiss
Yeah it goes like this
Lookin' at you lookin' at me that wait
Makes me wanna grab my old guitar and play
Something like ooh, what I wouldn't do
To write my name on my heart, get you wrapped in my arms baby all around you
And it goes like hey, girl I'm blown away
Yeah it starts with a smile and it ends with an all night long slow kiss
Yeah it goes like this
And it goes like ooh, and it goes like hey
And it ends with a kiss
Yeah it goes like this”

Senshi smiled as they finished the song, and the group continued to play more versions of the notes and chords they had been learning. It was over two hours later when he finally noticed that too much time had passed and with a slightly saddened sigh he interrupted their playing. “I apologize, I’ll have to cut this short. There’s paper I need to fill out, and I need to do the mission report for this. However, I believe before our next mission we should get together again. This… teamwork bonding will be good for us to operate together.”

He could see an odd glint in the Genin’s eyes as though they knew he was lying about the reasons why it was good to get together. He chose to ignore it instead pushing himself up, surprised when Josei told him to that they could all keep the guitars. He would certainly be practicing more, now that he had found he enjoyed this almost as much as he enjoyed cooking. Giving her a nod of thanks he turned picking up Gureto and sheathing her on his back before he headed towards the village. As he ran, he continued to practice what he had learned making a note to go to the library in order to pick up some more books so he could learn.

Much too soon he arrived at the mission office, and he ignored the incredulous looks he was getting because of the guitar instead heading to his office. Once inside he set the Guitar down and immediately set to his paper work. The faster he finished all of this the faster he could get back to practicing so that he could surprise Max and his Genin at another time. He decided his first order of business would be looking up the genre of music they had been playing. He had rather liked it a lot after all.  It wouldn’t be until late that night that he would finally finish his paper work required of him, and filed his mission report. IT was good that the library was open to shinobi at all hours or he would be annoyed.

Once Senshi got to the library he quickly went to the section required finding several books on how to better play the guitar, that also had other simple songs for him to practice. Once he had that in hand he headed on out back to his home. He did his best not to think on the guitar instead choosing to focus on the Chakra barrier seals. He needed to find a way to better use them, or at least make it faster so that they were more combat capable. If he really wanted his fuuinjutsu abilities to be combat capable, and with the barrier specialty at that, then he needed them to be fast enough to be viable in combat. He had long ago learned that things that took too long did not often work well in combat. These would be the thoughts in his mind as he arrived him, ending his terribly long mission.
