Home Bound

They had chosen a pretty horrible time to begin their departure through the desert in all honesty, the sun was hanging high and its heat was pressing against the faces of the young shinobi, with no wind to comfort them with a cool breeze they were left sweating almost instantly. “This is going to be a long walk” Komon would think to himself as he began to reach for the canteen to the side of his pack. Unbuckling it from its fixed position he’d weigh whether or not he should take his first drink so early. He’d give the container a quick swish to get a measure of how much the canteen held.
“We should conserve our water, don’t know when we’re gonna find another clean source of it you know” He’d say aloud back to sakana and the squad of genin that were trailing with him. Hesitantly he’d place the canteen back onto his backpack, holding it in his hand would only tempt him. And he knew he’d give into it in time. The group of ninja spent around 5 hours hiking through desert sand before they finally began to see the outline of vegetation, at this point Komons canteen contained 1/4th of the water he had left with, and he knew the genin may be running low on water.
“It looks like there’s a wooded area up ahead, we will try and find a creek when we reach it I remember them being all over the place on the way here” It took them about 20 minutes to actually reach the vegetation, it was a good distance away but when they did you could clearly hear the bubbling of a creek, Komon would send Sakana and one of the genin to fill up the bottles while he himself would pull out a map and figure out where to head from here.
Eventually his byakugan would settle around the familiar path, that followed a nearby creek. It was the one he had taken on the way here when guiding Sakana, Max, Komori, and all those other genin to hoshigakure. He’d wait for sakana and the other genin to come back with the cantines before reattaching it to his backpack and beginning to move once more, his head was filled with thoughts of home and in all honesty he simply couldn’t wait to get back. Kumogakure had its flaws, but it was home. And he wouldn’t have become a shinobi if he hadn’t believed that his home was of good people.
The movement seemed to going much quicker now that the group had cleared the desert and was no longer trudging through sand with every step, feet moved at a quicker pace on solid ground. A smile would appear on Komons face as he realized they were making good time, before he’d take out his canteen and take a sip, the water was refreshing and cold. “You picked a good stream Sakana” He’d say to the chuunin behind him all the while putting his canteen back into its holder on his backpack.
“Let’s go everyone” He’d shout as he picked up the pace, moving into a steady jog, it was probably for the best that the genin got some conditioning in, he’d think to himself as he remembered how much of a struggle it had been for him to keep up with the higher ups in the village. Ninja were supposed to be quick, hopefully the genin would rise to the occasion, and as the group ran in unison he began to realize the implications of his rank. He was a jounin now, and that left him responsible for training genin. Sure he’d tested the waters with hitori and sakana, but he’d hardly call himself their teacher.
Was he really up to the task to be a jounin, and ready for the responsibilities that came with it? The promotion had happened so fast he’d hardly had time to think the question over, and he’d spent all his time on training his taijutsu post party. Honestly he wasn’t sure of the answer at the moment, but he supposed in time he’d find out. Continuing to think it over his attention would soon be turned elsewhere when the smell of the rot forest caught his attention. It was a disgusting smell, but a familiar one.
“Home”
He’d say quietly turning around to check on the condition of the group. They all seemed to be in good shape, to which Komon would let out a smile. “Home awaits us at the end of the rot forest, you’ve been away for a while but you’ll get used to that god awful smell again in no time at all” a joke to lighten the mood before their eyes were exposed to kumogakure’s defenses again. The zombies were no pretty sight, and he remembered how much he had hated them as a kid.
“Let’s go, I’d like to get home before my favorite restaurant closes.” He’d say waving them on, a clear signal for them to follow him. He knew his home well, and instead of taking the main road he’d follow a small path in the woods, a shortcut he had found a long time ago. It would cut the remainder of the trip from half an hour to under twenty minutes, saving them a little over ten minutes in time.
At the end of the twenty minutes the group would see kumogakures walls, and the hordes of Youka’s undead servants appear over the horizon. The village was as gloomy and dark as always, the soil as muddy and difficult to navigate as always, in fact it seemed not much had changed in the weeks he had been gone. “Would you look at that beauty” He’d say as he nudged his chuunin friend with his elbow in a joking manner.
“Take her in boy’s, were finally home” He’d shout to the group of genin as he made his way to the front gate of his home village.

Why didn’t they just fly. They could’ve just flown. Their had those stupid ink hawks for a reason. But no, Komon wanted to give the genin a real travel like experience. Well that wasn’t fun. The blazing sun felt deathly on his skin. He was so done with his heat, he missed the cool breeze of his lake by the mountains back in kumo. He missed the trees and and Komori had broken from training. He missed Kaigo’s shop. He missed it all. There wasn’t one aspect of Hoshi that was better than Kumo, especially not the people. Yeah Kumo had zombies, but at least those people were respectful to the harmless. Though that wasn’t to say all of them were bad. The cook guy seemed pretty cool as well as the small Hoshi shinobi that he had spent one of his days with. People like them almost made him want to go back to visit sometime… almost.
Walking was overrated, literally he went to Hoshi for a vacation. It was not very fun. He ended up doing a lot of work he didn’t feel like doing. He wasn’t even heading back with all his friends, just Komon. There was no Reizo, Max, Senshi, Komori, Saya…. Saya. She had just left the night of the party and he hadn’t seen her since. He had hoped she was okay. All her gear was packed up and waiting for her upon her return. If she returned… the boy shivered at the thought. Anyway, back to walking. There was no way he was doing that. Sakana instead created an ink Hawk and decided to lie on it’s back. His backpack and other gear would be draped along the side with Komorgi sleeping on his chest.
This horrid journey would continue for hours. Granted, Sakana was asleep for most of it but still. He wasn’t very happy when Komon woke up him to go fill their water bottles with a genin. A grumbling noise would be heard from Komorgi as Sakana had to place the small puppy on the burning sand. He angrily gathered the canteens from Komon and the rest of the kids, whose names he had been too busy sleeping to learn.
Together they had walked up to the stream. It wasn’t much but it was going to get them home. Komorgi sure enjoyed it as he dove right and and started splashing about. It took just about five minutes for the two to get everything filled. It would’ve taken less time had the genin not dropped his canteen about times. Normally Sakana would have been more social and helping to the young genin but he really wasn’t in the mood. He shouldn’t be babysitting but he was a chuunin now. He wondered if this was what Komon had felt like when he was team leader of Sakana and the other genin. Oh well, he would just have to get used to it.
After Komorgi had finished playing Sakana would head back to where the rest of the group was. There would be a short exchange on where they were going, but the Meijin didn’t really care. He was just going to play follow the leader anyway. He debated jumping back on the haw but decided against it since he wanted to look like he was actually helping when they arrived back to the village. Though he wasn’t about to carry his gear, screw that.
They would continue on and on and on. It seemed to never end. He would lose track of time. He tried to keep himself engaged by listening to the genin talk amongst themselves but their conversations were horribly boring. Mostly talking about training they wanted to do and other basic ninja stuff. So many aspirations, Sakana knew he should work on his own training eventually but his was a much different circumstance.
The new chuunin was host to a powerful force. One that made him a major weapon for the village hidden in the clouds, and also a prime target in a war. His new life was going to be one of constantly being babysat, probably by Komon since they seemed to be assigned to a lot of the same units already. He kept being told to just connect with the three tailed monster but it was hard. They both liked to sleep a lot so most of the time everything was quiet. Sometimes Sakana would hear the occasional growl but nothing out of the ordinary.
He snapped out of his train of thought as he heard Komon try and get the attention of the genin. They were home. The jounin made an attempt at humor to try and lighten the mood after the long journey but Sakana really wasn’t interested. He was finally home. The only two things that mattered to him in that moment was the puppy in his arms and the thought of getting back to his lake. Nothing else mattered, not his training, not the three tails, nothing. He kept picturing a nice relaxing swim on the lake. The only thing that would have made the day better was if Saya had been there to go to the lake with him but oh well. He would just have to wait and hope for her return. Komon had made a comment about going to a restaurant. The Meijin wasn’t sure if that was a statement or an invitation so he decided to ignore it.
At long last the group would approach the front gate to the village. The smell of rotting flesh was unimaginably amazing. The huge wall peered above them as high as the eye can see. Everything was right again in the world. Well for now at least, the new chuunin was never able to have a long period of time to just chill. Once they entered Komon would debrief all the genin on what their next assignments were. By the time he had finished Sakana and Komorgi, the ninja hound, were already on their way to the lake.
