Understanding (P, Self Training)

He fell to the ground for the hundredth time that day, breath coming quickly and short. He was probably covered in bruises from the training he was doing, but Lan didn't care. He had to get stronger, no matter what anybody else said. He laid there for a minute, still clutching the senbon he was currently practicing throwing. His aim was still far from perfect. The other remained stuck in the outer ring of the target, about as far from a bulls-eye as he could get. Ah, he was never going to get anywhere like this! Maybe he should practice some basic medical ninjutsu so he at least didn't go home covered in cuts.
What were the signs he needed again? Boar->Rat->Snake, was it? Or at least, that's what he remembered. The young genin sat up, going to retrieve his senbon first. Better to put his weapons away first. When both senbon were safely tucked away in his weapons pouch, he found himself a spot to try practicing that wasn't within range of the targets. Standing as tall as his 5'3 of height would allow, the genin prepared himself to try the jutsu. It was useful to learn, or so he figured, especially if he wanted to be a medic nin one day. And thus, he decided to at least learn the basic version of this jutsu.

The young genin sighed, closing his eyes in an attempt to concentrate. Like any normal child, he was rather impatient, but he was slowly learning that immediate action did not always work. Take deep breaths. Breathe in, breathe out. Stay calm, and concentrate, and he would learn the jutsu soon enough. After a minute, he let himself form the signs. Boar->Rat->Snake, with a fair bit of concentration not to mess the signs up. But with that concentration, he had neglected to concentrate on his chakra, and the jutsu did nothing. Ah, learning any jutsu by himself was never fun. He hated it. But he had to learn, or he would never be strong enough.
So, with a long sigh, his hands formed the three signs again. Boar -> Rat -> Snake, though this time he forced himself to concentrate more on the actual wounds than the handsigns. This time, he had marginal success, one or two of the bruises fading just a bit. Not completely healed, but definitely progress. He would take it, for any progress he made could only be a good thing at this stage. A sigh, since using medical ninjutsu on oneself was never quite as effective. Or so he found. He had seen it done by his parents, before their passing.
He would learn how to do it more efficiently, if possible. Standing up straighter, he took in another deep breath and opened his eyes. Boar -> Rat -> Snake. With each handsign, his determination to learn this jutsu was made obvious. His concentration wavered with the noise around the training ground, but he himself did not falter. Much like the first time, he had garnered a similar result. While some of his wounds faded a bit, he was nowhere near closing them all. Still, he wanted to do this. He would get it right. He needed to learn any and every jutsu he possibly could, in this scenario. Or at least, with the goal he had.
Slight amounts of frustration were starting to surface. Was he doing the handsigns wrong? Using too much chakra? Too little? Letting out a groan, he almost wanted to give up and return to his house. But he did not. His determination to learn the jutsu outweighed his desire to drag himself home. Once again, he took a calming breath. Surely, after several tries, he would get it this time? Boar -> Rat -> Snake. The handsigns made and him focusing his chakra more, and his wounds began to properly scab over. Gingerly, he inspected himself. They were mostly closed, except for a cut that had remained open with the movement of his body. Oh well, he had gotten most of them. It was a start, right? Though he knew little of how it was supposed to work, the genin was satisfied.
