Into the Mountain (Ask)
Tue Sep 17, 2019 11:52 am
At the bottom of the mountain, the redhead looked upwards. "Fierce climb", he thought. While he did walk everywhere in the village, trekking wasn't something he had gotten into, preferring swimming as a relaxation activity, or bar fighting as a way of relieving stress. However, as part of his reintegration into the genin programme of Kumogakure, he decided to come into the mountain where several opportunities would naturally appear onto him.
He bent over and made sure his sandals were strapped comfortably but securely. The pebble in the sandal will always wear you down faster than the track itself. "Right, lets do this." He took off.
Unlike swimming, trekking offered very little excitment to the genin. "Genin", he thought resentfully. Had it not been for the destruction of his restaurant, he wouldn't had fallen back to this... service. But now, looking into the slope of the mountain, looking upwards to the sun, he thought how by this time he'd usually be at the market, looking for vegetables for his restaurant, negotiating prices over the raddish stand with the bitter earth scent on his nose. "A new opportunity", he guessed. A thin layer of sweat coated his forehead, and now that he felt his forehead he felt also his neck and his back starting to get wet. The sun beat on the stones and caked them in heat, and Kaito longed more and more to be by the sea swimming. "Patience, Kaito." Today is a different day.

The sun climbed higher and higher into the sky, and so did Kaito climb higher into the mountain. He could feel his thigh muscles tense and burning from the climb, his heels digging into the sole of the sandal. He was embarrassed of having to wear it, but he had finally given in and wrapped the bandana around his forehead to prevent the sweat from trickling down into his eyes. He didn't know why being a genin or looking like one was so embarrassing for him, but it was probably because all the genins he knew were either kids, or pathetic losers with gaping holes in their stomachs, rotting slowly as they tumbled along the current of a river, not even in shallow graves.
There were Jounin younger than him, for crying out loud. Creatures who could rip his heart out before he even realized they moved. "Scary shit." For this reason he took it upon himself to get into training once again. "Fucking Kuro." If it wasn't for that lowlife accepting insurance shark money he wouldn't be in this predicament. "Ah, those khants would probably find another poor sod to do their dirty work for them."
A wonderful sound filled the ears of the genin as he turned around a boulder: a little babbling brook almost lulled him to sleep as he stood there. Only now was he noticing how his breathing was laboring, his thorax alit with smoldering ashes of persistent exertion. "A little rest would be nice."
He walked to the brook and took his sandals off, before dipping his feet into the running water, a cold sensation of pleasure climbing its way up his feet and calves, as he threw his head back in relief. He could already feel his thighs calming down, but he strained them a little more as he crouched into the brook, cupping his hands together to get some water into his system. The natural water was tastier than he remembered from his youth. His thighs now really ached. "I hope I don't die from getting up." He strained himself, and his thighs cooperated, screaming with pain in protest at the exertion. "Ah, I'm too old for this!..."

He passed some water on his head to cool it off, as well as his chest and arms. He crouched once again and sat back onto the rock for quick respite. He took the opportunity to massage his thighs while drying his hands. He hadn't been walking for long but it was very different from standing all day in his kitchen.
He lifted his feet from the brooke's water and circled around to let his feet dry. The day was hot but not hot enough for his feet to dry before he got bored; he took his shirt and dried his feet, then put his sandals on, got up and tied the shirt to the back of his waist. Time to get back on the track.
Trekking through the path, he could tell few people did this route, for the vegetation had had the opportunity to grow in certain areas. Mayhaps it were just invasive species. "Are there even forestation officers in the Kumo that handle these things?", he wondered. But he was forced to let that get out of his mind.
Before him, the winding seldom used path ended abruptly against the rock face, known as a point of climb for free climbers. It was a dangerous climb but many mavericks climbed it for the rush. He wondered if he would feel a similar thing while climbing.

Kaito bent down and grabbed some dirt with his fingers, and rubbed his hands in it. The dirt would absorb the natural oil of one's hands and allow better grip into the rocky surface. Now at the base of the rockface, it looked more daunting than he ever remembered it. It had been daunting when he did it the first time with his genin team nearly twenty years ago. Three boys at the care of lady Asuka, the cruel jounin mistress. "Three dead memories", he thought. Lady Asuka overstepped her boundaries and ran with one of the boys, both were killed months later out there. The last survivor, Kuro, died by his own hand not too far from where he now was. The dead body was found with a damaged Kumogakure headband, a deep gash across the metal protective plate. Missing Ninjas were seldom cried about by the villages they run from, and there was a miniscule bounty that was attributed to Kaito when the special forces concluded their investigations.
"Attributed D-Rank for completing the bounty on Missing Ninja Takeshi Kuro, and a formal invitation to re-enroll in the ninja force of Kumogakure. It's as though faith wanted me with a kunai in hand all along instead of a kitchen knife."
He clapped his hands together, and gripped the rock carefully at strategic points. He lifted his weight off of the ground with slow steps upward, moving his hands to where he could hoist himself further into the rockface. Sweat coated his face, but he resisted wiping his face lest he wet his hands. Forcefully, he brought himself higher along the rockface, and for once, he felt a pang of fear. Whereas in the past he had been forced to climb the wall without using chakra, he now remembered that he forgot how to muster and use his chakra. "Fuck."
His hand slipped, and he felt his weight pulling away from the rockface.

As the rushed through the air, one would think that the passing air would cool down the body, however that was not the case. As he fell away from the rockface his body anticipated what would happen and warmed up, trying to loosen the muscle as much as it could to avoid extensive trauma on impact; a loose body would let kinetic energy travel without much damage whereas a tense body would absorb all the energy and leave extensive damage.
"Is this how I die? Just because I was foolish and tried a feat of physical strength I didn't prepare for properly?"
As he fell, the world seemed to be upside down. He could see the outline of the village, the rotten vegetation and forest of dread, malignant trees. "I sight of what's to come."
He closed his eyes, and in a moment of divine inspiration, he remembered how they, as ninja, used the inherent chakra of their bodies to accomplish tasks that seemed inhumane, how they leapt into the tops of trees or jumped across buildings. He tensed his abdomen and threw his head back, then pulled his legs inwards towards his chest, successfully twisting midair and regaining his balance, being now able to aim to a landing. As the ground fast approached, he stretched his body as much as he could, and his chakra flared up: as he touched down on the floor with his feet, he let his body weight slink into the floor, crouching low to the ground, before using the momentum to roll backwards. He caught himself as he slid through the ground with one hand.
Panting hard, he felt his breakfast coming back up to his mouth; there was no avoiding it. He threw up, the taste of bile overpowering his mouth and airways, the adrenaline on his body preventing him from feeling much pain from the contraction of his stomach, or from his legs and hands.
He cleaned up his mouth, and thought back to lady Asuka. "A lousy teacher, to be sure… but taught me enough to save my life today."
He needed a moment to get his bearings; he fell back onto his buttocks and laid on the floor, gazing into the endless blue sky. His mouth prickled with the taste of bile and he thought back to the babbling brooke not too far away. "Gotta get this bile off my teeth, lest they rot."
He thought back on his youth, his teacher and his fellow students. Had he pursued the ninja career, he may not be in this situation now. He had to start back from basics. "Baby steps… Easy does it."
