Mined Ore

Yoi took a sip of his coffee. He had gotten into drinking the powerful beverage recently to help him through his late nights. But then, he realized how much he loved coffee, and now Yoi drank it every morning. Yoi let the rich beverage flow through his system, waking his brain from the fog that was morning with a sharp spotlight. The Yuki saw a letter slipped under his door. He walked over to his door, bent over and grabbed the letter. The Yuki flipped open his summoning ring in a way that it wouldn’t cut himself. He used the ring to open the letter and read the contents:

Congratulations! You, Yoi Yuki, have been chosen to participate in a full class on steel. You will be able to mine, smelt and fold your very own steel! Date and time on the back.


Yoi made his way to the specified location. It was a small steel mine. Yoi saw Hanabi inside, hacking away at some rock. Yoi sucked in a deep breath. It smelled like his childhood. Growing up, Yoi had worked in his father’s shipyard. These two places weren’t so different. Yoi actually had gone here a few times before with his father. Yoi gave a wave to Hanabi before he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. An old friend. Daryl. Yoi, with a grin on his face, yelled over to Daryl, “Hey man! Long time no see!” Yoi picked a picaxe, swinging it over his shoulder.

Yoi heard Hanabi say, “Hi Yoi, glad to have you.” Yoi smiled. It was nice to know that he had been making friends in Konoha. It seemed like Genin had just been flowing out of the academy recently. It was pretty easy to make friends, but most of Yoi’s older friends had seemed to vanish. Chuta. Minato. Kizaru, Tadashi and Nekrun were some of the few left. Obviously, Yoi knew Yensung, but you know, they weren’t really friends. Yoi thought about his life. He had been progressing faster than anybody had expected. Of course, this meant he constantly left things behind. He was lucky to have Tadashi though. Tadashi had seemed amazingly powerful when they first met, but now Tadashi was just, well, a little stronger than Yoi. Yoi, let out an internal sigh, before saying, “Yeah, nice seeing you Hanabi.”

Hanabi pointed out to Yoi a vein of ore. The Yuki presumed it was iron, as it logically would be. “The good ore is over there, if you wanted to get this over with as quick as possible. It runs couple meters deep and about ten high.” Yoi noticed Hanabi’s Byakugan. He was thankful for the fact that people were nice in the cruel and harsh world that the shinobi world was. Yoi stood perpendicular to the vein. He put his left foot forward and rested the pickaxe again his left leg. His right hand held the bottom of his pickaxe, with the left holding the top. This allowed for maximum power and control. He was treating this just like splitting wood. He brought the pickaxe, or what he imagined to be an axe, over his head, before swinging it down with all his strength. He hadn’t split wood in a while, but his strength had nearly doubled. Of course, iron and stone was much harder. In about a few more swings, he managed to collect a suitable chunk of ore. He put it in a conveyer belt and watched that thing do it’s magic. He calmly walked over to Hanabi and said, “Hey, how are you doing?”

Yoi, leaned up against a wall of the cave, waiting. He wasn’t that tired from his work, so his muscles weren’t aching that much. Well, normally, they would be. His right arm ached like he had just trained for a whole day. Since the right arm hadn’t been connected to living tissue in more than a year, well, it wasn’t in the best physical condition. He hated the thought sometimes that he was being pushed along sometimes by someone that was, not himself. He wanted to be independent, and not always leaning on someone. But his arm. And his eyes. He was tired of looking through someone else’s eyes. These eyes, they were a dark black. They stood in sharp contrast to his old eyes, which were a deep blue. He almost felt as he saw the world differently. Obviously, this wasn’t true, but this had an emotional effect on the young Yuki. Yoi knew it had been a long time. He knew as a shinobi, he was supposed to have just “moved on.” But sometimes, you couldn’t just move on. You had to accept it. Even though it had been more than half a year, Calin was almost constantly in Yoi’s thoughts. Yoi saw his chunk of ore exit the conveyor belt. He let it cool for a few seconds, before picking it up. His Yuki DNA made him pretty resistant to non-jutsu based heat, so the Yuki wasn’t very concerned. He picked up his metal and walked over to the forge where the instructor stood. The Yuki, having done some work here in the past, started hammering away. Due to the metal still being hot, it was pretty easy. However, if he hit it and the metal started sparking, he backed away for a few seconds. He, after much work, managed to make a nice sheet of metal. He started the folding process. This would take much work, but Yoi had done it before. He eventually made himself a nice square of metal. It was ready to be used on a weapon or other item at a moments noticed, so Yoi could augment a weapon with it. Or, Hanabi could do it for him, as she had offered. But he didn’t need that yet. The Yuki said his goodbyes, before heading home. His right arm hurt like hell, but this meant it was getting stronger. Yoi was proud of himself.
