(Don't) Shoot the Messenger [E-rank]
Shin stood, his back against a building as he looked out on the nearly empty street. He nocked an arrow and waited, ready to draw and release at a moment's notice. Had anyone been able to see his eyes, they would notice how they eerily flicked from their normal brown color, to having no pupil at all, his eyes becoming completely white with small black lines reaching in to where his pupil had once been, and then back to normal. His vision shifted back and forth from voidsight to normal as he followed a shapeless blur and then barely perceptible movement as someone moved through the darkness. The movements that he followed were slow and methodical as the being slowly crept forward, doing its best to avoid any notice.
After a few more steps, Shin stopped using voidsight. The man now close enough that Shin could make out some general features. He stood at about 5’9”, though it was only an estimate due to his slightly bent posture as he moved. He wore all black, which in Shin’s estimation showed that he wasn’t particularly practiced at skulking. Pure black always stands out ever so slightly against the darkness. Shin continued to wait, his body ready for movement at a moment's notice. Patients was something he had in spades. He had spent countless hours hunting game, eventually you become used to long periods of nothing followed by sudden and brutal action.
The man reached Shin’s location and froze. His eyes darting up to see Shin standing there, bow ready and arrow nocked, though he hadn’t yet pulled the string back. “Whoa, don’t shoot. Please.” He put his hands in the air showing he didn’t have a weapon. Shin didn’t move, he didn’t speak, he just waited, watching the man before him. The man’s nerves continued to fray, not sure what was happening. “I’ll pay you. I have 500 ryo on me, just don’t shoot please.”
Shin looked on, completely unmoved by anything the man had said or done. He watched as the man slowly reached into his coat. His arm moved slowly, drawing the arrow back, matching the man’s slow motions. When his hand produced a small pouch with ryo, he let his arm slowly move back, releasing tension from the string. The man tossed the pouch at Shin’s feet, who continued to just watch the man, paying no mind to the pouch of ryo at his feet.
“Can I go? Please don’t mention I was here.” He slowly backed up, Shin never saying a word as the man eventually got far enough away that Shin could no longer see him. With the man finally gone, he placed the arrow back in his quiver and lowered his bow. He then bent down and picked up the pouch. He wasn’t sure why the man had given him money, he didn’t care why the man was there, that he had been there, or what his business was. His odd behavior had set Shin on edge, and he was ready to eliminate him had it been necessary, but if he didn’t want to bother Shin, Shin had no business with him. Still he wasn’t upset to have a few more coins in his pocket.
