Medical Elective, The Shadow of the Mind

Mojiretsu Gin had taken upon himself to enroll into a medical class in order to better his skills as a field medic. Even though he had taken up the scalpel simply as a way to preserve the team's health in case he or Yuurei had ended up harmed, he slowly began developing an interest in the study of medicine. The class had been rescheduled to early in the evening since the sensei had prior engagements. The sun was orange in the sky and all the students had donned harm clothing for they knew by the time class ended, the night's chill would be upon them.

Sunagakure's hospital held their classes in the basement, away from important and secured areas for medical emergency reasons and given how late it was, very little staff were about while the five students entered the lab. Gin, rubbing his hands together for warmth beneath his cloak, looked about the room to see several tables with a wooden dummy on each of them.

"Alright, everyone, today's lesson is simple, you'll be operating on your patients" sensei Kiyo quickly entered the lab, knowing he was a tad late. Each student stood by a table, staring at the lifeless dolls; most were creeped out, except for Gin, wooden dolls and puppets were more than simply his body, "Each patient has a medical chart that shows their ailment, go about the necessary measurements to heal them" Sensei said as he began flipping through folders and books, seeming very busy with whatever he was dealing with.

Gin looked down upon his wooden patient, smiling, for he knew he had a strong advantage against the others when it came to handling these wooden beings.

Giving a quick look over the wooden patient, there were smooth creases that ran throughout the body, Gin knew it was to match the chakra lines that run through the body. He then ran his hands slowly over the body, feeling how smooth the wood was; no cracks, no sawdust. "No prior incidents... good hygiene..." he then began applying slight pressure from his fingertips upon different parts of the wooden, feeling the density, then gave a few soft raps with his knuckles, the wood is different from the local wood that sunagakure puppets are made of, probably from a different region with little trees, "Young, probably teens to early adult... foreigner..."

Nearby classmates turned back to observe him, wondering how he was able to make these identifications without looking at the make-shift clipboard at the end of the table. They began whispering to one another, wondering if Gin was either a professional genius or taking this practice too seriously.

Gin then reached over to view the medical chat on his clipboard; 'Punctured Lung' it read. At first Gin thought he should perform a simple healing jutsu, but then he thought a punctured lung would be too deep to heal and would probably take too long to heal, the alternative would be to perform surgery, which also gave him the chance to look into the wooden work of art. The ninja gave one look around, the other students were too busy with their work and the sensei was busy going through his documents. Gin then quickly took the chance, he channeled his chakra into his hand, sharp enough to cut flesh. He then gently sliced down the midsection of the chest, within a minute he managed to open the chest.

Gin looked into the empty torso of the wooden being, knowing full well that he wasn't suppose to open it, but at that moment Gin's mind swam with the thoughts of how he could make alterations to this being, what weapons he could place within the cavity, to give it weight and use. The ninja began running his fingers through the inner part of the torso, taking note the carving and shaping was rough, but doable, he himself could fix this, make it better.

"Mojiretsu-san" sensei had called his attention, Gin turned to him, surprised that he had forgotten where he was for a moment, "Care to explain why you decided to break my doll?" he left his desk to approach Gin's table. Everyone else stopped their work to look over and see what was happening.

Gin was nervous, his hand was nearly shaking, not because he was afraid of getting into trouble, but because he couldn't handle social situations, let alone being in the spotlight of a conversation like this, "I'm performing surgery" Gin may have been nervous, but he could speak calmly and surely.

"Surgery for a punctured lung?" sensei picked up Gin's medical chart and showed it to him.

"There's little information to go on, I cannot tell if how bad the wound is, the pulse of the patient, so I couldn't determine how much blood has been lost, if I try to heal the wound from the outside, it would take too long to heal and in certain cases, the patient would die from internal bleeding by the time the healing would patch up the lung." the room fell into silence after Gin gave his explanation.

After a moment of silence, the sensei gave sigh and rubbed the back of his head, "I suppose that is a good assessment" and with that the air in the room became less tensed and Gin's shoulders relaxed, "I'll allow it this time, but understand that in the future you have to follow the outline" the sensei then returned to his desk leaving the room to be filled with whispers from the students, no doubt talking about Gin which made didn't worry him at all, so long as no one tried to talk to him especially when he's working.

Gin closed the torso and finished up the work by writing out the procedure he made and how it was practical. After handing in his paper to the front, Gin walked out the door, ready to get something to eat. The confrontation the sensei had put in him had made his stomach turn. "Hey!" one of the students called to Gin, hurrying to catch up. Once he engaged Gin he began speaking with a smile and with a hint of admiration, "That was impressive what you did in there." he said. Gin leaned back a bit, not sure how to reply or why this boy wanted to speak to him, "Are you practicing to become a surgeon?" he asked, the twinkle in his eyes showed an interest of some kind.

"Not really, I'm just trying to become a field medic" Gin nearly mumbled and had difficulty making eye contact as he continued to walk out with the other student by his side.
