The paper boy arrives [Village entry]
Wed Jun 30, 2021 10:37 am
It was an early day in the Wind Country, an hour or two after sunrise. The desert was calm, clouds of dust shifted across the landscape with the heavy winds. It would almost be considered a pleasant day were it not for the omnipresent heat that attacked the skin of anyone not lucky enough to be within the village.
Ray Koutaishi breathed a sigh of relief as the large looming walls of Sunagakure came into view from the haze of the desert. It had been a long, and dangerous, journey from the Rice Country to finally arrive here. He'd left his clinic under the care of the more-than-capable hands of his only friend and assistant Sarah. She knew everything he did about care and medicine, and more. She was also someone who shared his view on the world and healthcare. They both agreed that there was too much death in the world and that it was their duty as doctors to provide care to anyone and everyone who asked or needed it.
Ray had decided to travel to Sunagakure for this reason; there were limits to the care he could provide using just the civilian methods he'd relied upon for so long. The final push of motivation he'd needed was the death of a man who'd been attacked by bandits just outside the borders of Tanbogakure, and had received a fatal stab wound to the neck in the scrabble. He had been taken to Ray's clinic as soon as possible, and Sarah and he had done everything they could... But the wound was too severe for them to deal with the time they had. Knowing that the death of an innocent man with a family could have been prevented if he'd just been more knowledgable in Medical Jutsu had been a hard blow to the young Koutaishi. It was, however, the kind of blow he needed to light a fire of motivation under him.
He wasn't skilled at the manipulation of chakra in any way, but he'd learn. Teaching himself was a bad idea - not when life and death was on the line - so he'd come to the decision to travel to a ninja village. He chose Sunagakure because, in his research, it looked like the village that was most accepting of outsiders like himself.
Anyone outside the gates would see a young, tanned boy slowly approaching. He was in a loose billowing shirt, dark trousers and he had his usual trenchcoat was wrapped around his waist. Slung around his torso was a messenger bag that, if anyone were to look inside, would find it to be filled with an assortment of origami papers, supplies for the journey, and some spare clothes. Once he got within an appropriate distance of the Cleft, Ray would pause and wait to be granted entry to the village by whoever was stationed there.

Han would lightly hum to himself within his shack, the older man unusually energetic and cheerful today… ahh yes, it was because he only had a half shift today, and to make things even better, it was a MORNING half shift. He was an old man, and as such he couldn’t survive comfortably without more sleep than he used to have, but that just meant calling it a day at an earlier time. Ever since he was a young boy in Iron Country he had been an early riser, and that had not changed a bit even now that he was in his twilight years. The spry older man continued to hum to himself as he eyed the approaching figure, the first of those to visit during his shift. As he got closer, and Han could actually make out more about him, it became clear that it was little more than a young boy. When the boy came to a stop near the guard post Han would speak.
“Name and reason for your visit?” The question was short and to the point, and based on the small permit that was sitting in front of Han it was clear that it was simply for the purposes of entry. The sooner he got the boy inside Suna, the sooner he could get back to his relaxing.

It appeared that the guard was the buffest elderly gentleman the young boy had ever seen. Not exactly the kind of person he'd expected to see at the gates to a ninja village, but then, he hadn't really expected anything. He was extremely out of his depth here and it showed by the slight fish-out-of-water expression on his babyish face. When the man asked for identification the young Koutaishi quickly swallowed to try and regain some of the lost moisture to his throat before responding.
"My name is Ray," He started, voice hoarse and cracked, "I'm just here for work and training,"

Han would give a small smirk as the boy spoke, his dehydration quite obvious to the older man, who was kind enough to retrieve his water skin and push it out through the small opening in the glass to his post. Poor kid, obviously hadn’t been prepared for the harsh road to Suna.
“Ray, work and training. Done, now be sure to keep this with you at all times, you’ll be in quite a load of trouble if you’re asked to provide it and you can’t. Training Grounds 1 through 5 are available to be used by the public, but 6 through 10 are restricted to Suna shinobi only, so be sure to make sure you stick to the right areas. You’ve got free access to most of the village, but The Academy is off limits to outsiders without special permission.” The older man would explain, sliding the small permit out for the boy to take.
“Keep the waterskin kid, you’ll be wanting one of your own for when you leave. You’ll find that Suna itself is far less inhospitable than the desert that surrounds us. It’s the barrier around the village, protects us from the heat, from the harmful rays of the sun and from the sandstorms.” The man would say, before giving a minor explanation of what the visible bubble around the village was, and why when he crossed the threshold of The Cleft he would feel a massive drop in temperature.
“With all that said, enjoy your time in Suna.”

Ray accepted the waterskin gratefully and held it tightly within his hands, his own water bottle having run dry several hours prior. He was lucky that he'd had the foresight to bring any water at all - he almost hadn't until Sarah had reminded him that he'd be walking through a literal desert. It took all his willpower to not immediately start emptying the water into his mouth as the man spoke and informed him of which areas he would be allowed to go into, as doing so would be quite inconsiderate. When the man slid over the permit Ray would take it with a thankful smile and a nod.
Hearing about the dome over the village was such a relief to the young Koutaishi that he noticeably perked up when it was mentioned - any longer in this heat and he'd likely have a serious medical emergency on his hands. Hopefully, the climate inside was gentle enough to allow him to exist comfortably for the few months he was planning to stay in Sunagakure.
"Thank you, sir!" Ray said with a bright smile once the gentleman granted him entry. Assuming the man had nothing left to say, Ray would give the man another nod of respect before making his way through the long corridor-like entrance to the village.
