New day, new mission. The idea in itself was unhealthy. Horrible, Madara in normal times could never have done that. But it was necessary for her progression as a shinobi… it was necessary they said and so she believed it blindly. Her unwavering willpower made her act in full knowledge of the facts, and sometimes it was necessary to act in a dark way to be inundated with clarity. She knew that Hoshigakure village possessing this so special will called the determination of a good soldier, attached a special value to the training of its young shinobi. That’s why Madara willfully contributed to the cause by taking a silver fetch mission. Her job today was kind of vague. “How do I prepare the supplies to fetch silver,” She asked the person in charge and she was directed to a small room in the academy where she started putting things from one box into other smaller boxes.
The ninja academy was a place to strike par excellence. You can imagine, in the early morning the children working on this mission stood frightened in front of a pile of filthy thing of their school then were told that if they messed up then someone could die… It was most obviously an exaggeration to keep their focus and Madara blamed herself for not having thought about it earlier but hey what do you want? So she surrendered to the fear that her mistakes could have grave consequences and carefully prepared the supplies as not to fail her mission.
The person in charge had a plan to write threatening messages to the slackers, the only downside, he did not have much authority. It was then that he decided to engrave a message on his katana. Unbeknownst to everyone, he entered the schoolyard and planted the katana for a slacking genin to find and get scared out off their mind. Finding a creepy katana here would be a bad omen, so the blade was removed from its sheath and left sitting there.
A few hours later, a noise not far from there made Madara shiver with anguish, she was relieved when she saw that it was just a gutter cat. Sweating on all sides she had finished her work, and said to herself that the rumors of a creepy blade being in the school yard was just that… a rumor. There was no need to check it out.
The group of genin supply packers was going to have hours of deep anguish without any doubt, but first of all it was not necessary to be spotted, so the mission organizer had decided to hide until katana was found. He also changed outfits, putting on a worn tunic, like that of the carpenter who had been carrying out repair work since the last war. One genin in the hallways, heard the sounds of ghosts and ran in to tell Madara and the others about the creepy sounds. She said she heard crying of young children. She had succeeded in one night in raising a suspicion of fear in this classroom. Madara was scared, but she wasn’t willing to go investigate the noises. It was all a trap anyways, to catch unsuspecting slackers offguard.
“Just keep working. Nothing is out there and if there was we aren’t strong enough to fight it. It’s probably just some prankster,” Madara said with a roll of her neck to get a kink out of her tired muscles. With those words, nobody else decided to wander off with their lack of supervision. They all hunkered down to finish packing up the supplies. About an hour later the kids quieted down and the mission organizer came in through a window and nodded in satisfaction. He had expected some of them to wander away to check out the noises he was making but none of them seemed to have caved to the temptation.
“Good work keeping focused,” he said, “Just a few more hours and you can all go home.” With these words, he took out another big box of supplies which all the students took from. Madara reached in and pulled out a sheet. She folded the sheet in 2 and put it in one of her small containers, before recovering a crate filled with various and varied foods, then went upstairs. The first floor was dedicated to the material warehouse, while the ground floor was only used for strategic meetings. The kunoichi put her box of supplies in a corner of the room, and took another staircase which went up. She arrived on the second floor. This one already included some armchairs and sofas, as well as 5 futons piled up on the ground without organization. The girl then went up to the third and last floor, which offered an almost overall view of the surrounding area. She was just fetching supplies from other areas of the building to bring back downstairs. She had to keep focused and not pay attention to the shadows to avoid getting creeped out.
One window caught her eyes. She could watch the sky for hours like this. Madara settled behind the bay window, quietly, and contemplated the landscape. Then she activated her sharingan order to carry out a reconnaissance of the place. There was the hokage tower, very large, imposing; over there, the clan buildings; there, the administrative buildings; a little further, the river, then through there, the hospital, and the rest of the academy. Why did a shinobi leave the academy on a cool, dark night? The girl narrowed her eyes and followed her with her eyes, but a deep voice interrupted her.
“Madara, we are missing some shovels!!! Grab some while you’re up there.” Madara snapped out of it, scooped up an armful of shovels and hurried back downstairs. With all the supplies prepared, she was finally able to go home. She didn’t know why they were asked to pack fireworks away though. It seemed like a little too flash for shinobi who were supposed to be… well, stealthy. But she wasn’t running things so who cared?
The next day Madara reported for duty again. “I have to just find a some silver?” Madara asked.
“Not just any silver dear, it’s a very specific one. It’s abut a foot long and the rocks can turn invisible. It’s poisonous too so it’s a dangerous mission. I suggest you wear gloves.” That was the conversation that Madara had when she got assigned the mission to hunt down the silver. It was an odd mission. Nonviolent at first glance and it could be very useful given she had the sharingan. That was probably why she was assigned the mission to begin with. The employer’s benevolent smile would have prompted any shinobi to accompany him on his travels. This is how he managed to take little Madara with him. They had known each other for an hour or so already, and had acquired a connection. Madara and the employer were accompanied by the employer’s daughter. In no case would one have left the other. They did everything together. Training, fighting, village life, and even missions. The little girl, with medium long hair tied in braids, two-tone kimono on the body, had received everything from her dad’s hand a few months earlier and was already doing well, but wanted to learn more to be able to protect those who she held dear.
Madara enjoyed their company and sat quietly as they travelled through the brush and looked for this elusive silver. Madara could focus in with her sharingan’s vision but she didn’t exactly know what she was looking for. It was easy to think that she could find it but she wasn’t some kind of metals expert. She didn’t know where the silver could be found. Supposedly there were some kinds of lizards that liked to hang around this special silver but she didn’t know where they lived either, or where they liked to go, what they ate… or really anything useful about them other than they looked scary. Before Madara finally parted ways with the mission payers the old man said that “They are attracted to the smell of ivy and have a fond desire for blackberries” to give her some guidance. She thanked them and thought that, “at least now I have some idea of what to look for.”
Now all alone, Madara looked around some more. She came to an open area, suitable for training, if only that was what she was here for. The low vegetation made the place like a carpet of greenery. Oh how she wanted to train a little bit. She imagined that an enemy was approaching. She imagined that he went for 3 low blows then 3 high blows. She imagined pulling out a blade, the blades collided, and the last assault gave rise to an opening for the young girl. Quickly, the imaginary enemy turned his blade and pricked Madara with an oblique blow from his wakizashi. Surprised, it counterbalanced its own katana and raised the handle of it, but too late, it only succeeded in deflecting the blow a few millimeters.
Madara couldn’t help but realize that she was no match, even for her illusory enemy. She smiled and huffed off her exhaustion. She was just killing time until she found some blackberries after all. She knew what those looked like, and it was easy to look around to the plants around her to see which ones had berries. From there she just had to pinpoint their colors. She found red berries, blue berries, but no blackberries. It was a little infuriating that it was taking so much time to do a very simple task. “Just find blackberries and use them as bait…” she kept telling herself for encouragement.
Not too long later, Madara entered a small clearing and finally spotted some blackberries. “Yes!” She shouted but she noticed that someone else was already there, harvesting them. She walked up there and noticed that it was someone she knew. Madara blushed, but she did not give the boy time to get tangled up with these rosy colors on her cheeks. “Farming for your shop then?” she asked which surprised him.
“Oh my god!” he shouted. Madara realized that she should have had more tact. She sometimes forgot that not everyone could see behind their head. “Oh it’s you. Don’t scare me like that! But yes, I’m here for some berries then I’m heading back to town. But I saw some footprints around here so I’m trying to hurry up before anyone else comes. I was half going to attack you you know!”
As if on cue, someone dropped down out of the trees. He looked so menacing that Madara instantly knew that he was going to be an aggressor. She rushed at him. 3 low blows, 3 high blows, then went on with an oblique blow which looked more like a circular stroke from top to bottom than an oblique. Her opponent appeared to block without difficulty and without forcing himself. After a few seconds of pause, he motioned for her to try again by bringing his hands together in the center when she would attack obliquely, almost as if taunting her to show just how inferior she was.
“I’m sorry little boy and girl, I am here for the blackberries. I have no need to fight you so just hurry on and find some other berries.” He looked kind in his own way, but still sickening in appearance. There was no doubt that he was a missingnin, but clearly he wasn’t a super violent killer one.
[foreshadowing]
Meanwhile, not too far away, again in the small room, three accomplices had joined. Outside, night had fallen, which was hard to achieve because of the clouds constantly blocking the light, even in broad daylight. With the window shutter and the two doors closed, no artificial light could illuminate the small room. Whether it was day or night, blue or cloudy sky, that made no difference. Drychda was comfortable in the dark, it assured the spies that nobody sees their faces, even if that of the young woman had kept the appearance of that of an old grandmother. This security guy will continue to cause you problems if others did not react... Ohatsu, you will now take care of finding information on the minister. She want to know who she sleeps with, what time she eats, her favorite places... Everything! her bodyguards don't know your face, it will give you the edge. Nuigetsu, the Jounin your brother got from us is an isolated target. See if it can be useful to us. For her part, she also have a target in mind... The Yojimbo did not intend to let her acolytes do al the work. She had already slept and already found an interesting target... “We will spend the night here. Rest, she must take the first watch” Ohatsu had given her report on the Jounin she had followed, she had no more information on her subject, but she could prove useful if her case was treated. Ohatsu had quickly received the order to spy on the target of Nuigetsu, she also had to spy on the target of Ohatsu, the roles had then been reversed, surely for security. It was a few seconds after the new order she had received that Ohatsu had already deployed, unfortunately she had no information as to the Minister's habitat, but she could easily find it on a detail. It was in the afternoon, in the middle of a strange rain jutsu and the most total darkness that the young Ohatsu began her research, as usual, she crossed the miles and an alley offered by this village with long buildings, she observed all the buildings that might have led her to believe that the minister was staying there, it was a real hunt for the man who had started for the Hozuki.
[end foreshadowing for a later thread]
Madara prepared to fight even harder. She knew that she needed the blackberries and she didn’t like this guy trying to bully her. She looked up at her enemy. He was tall, very tall. and yet she hated him very much. She knew it was thanks to a shinobi very similar to this one that she was even a shinobi, growing up, training. She knew she owed him everything. And she was grateful to him. Little Madara would do everything for him, he who had saved her when she was a foot in the abyss. He had reached out to her and she accepted it. He had saved her from death. Obviously this wasn’t the same person as the one she admired, but it made her hesitate. Madara had slowed down and practically stopped.
“Little one, every shinobi has a goal, which he pursues throughout his life. And you, do you have one? If you find it, you will succeed whatever you do! he winked at her. Have faith in your nindo! Which one is it?” Madara hesitated, lowered her eyes, raised them to his height then blushed a second time before answering him.
“I want to. Help my village. forever. And then, my nindo, I don’t know. I just want to protect my village.”
The man burst out laughing, “okay I guess that’s as good an answer as I could expect. I’m no missing nin, like you’re probably expecting. I’m a jounin of Hoshigakure, just testing your mettle. Go ahead, take the blackberries.”
Madara didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. She settled for relieved and scooped up a couple handfuls of berries and stuffed them in her pockets. “Thanks sir,” she shouted back, “oh and there’s probably a scared kid hiding around here. You should probably tell him it’s okay if you see him!” she was referring to her friend who had been picking the berries. Knowing him he was probably pooping himself.
Now that she had the blackberries, she could actually try baiting the creature that would ultimately lead her to the silver. She set up some blackberry traps along the areas that the mission payer suggested and then wait for creatures to come. It was simple work, but annoying because many more animals than just the specific silver were drawn to the smell of the blackberries. Madara had a hell of a time fending off the bigger animals and then kicking away anything that didn’t look like a lizard. Before long she had her very first invisible lizard in hand, wigging around for dear life. She stuffed it into an airtight pouch though so that there was no way it was getting away. “Poor guy, I guess your evolution didn’t take into account my sharingan because I can see right through your invisible charade.”
While saying that, the scary jounin from before sat and watched from afar while he stroked his face. The young uchiha felt interesting to him. He could see that she wanted to progress, improve, protect the village. Do what her village did for her. He saw her mess up with catching a creature like this and laughed. He knew she was already on her way to completing the mission so he gave her some advice. He came down and urged her to try again so as not to lose her prize. Madara jumped up, rushed towards the next lizard, sure of herself. She grabbed the lizard and tucked it away. She repeated the process until she had a pouch crammed full of lizards. After that all she had to do was go around and find her way back to the village. Hopefully she wouldn’t get killed on the way back or anything… that would really make this whole thing a big waste of time. Madara took out a shovel that’d been prepared the previous day and got to scooping up all the special silver ore once the creature led her to her prize! Gathering up the silver was easier said than done though. She only had so much space in her pack and she had to end up breaking not only the chunks apart but also removing the obvious impurities. She wished someone had told her about all this manual labor before she started!
