Stargazing [P]
Tue Dec 21, 2021 11:34 am
Night's inky veil of darkness rested softly over the Uchiha district. Stylized lanterns lit the sidewalks, sharp shadows danced in the alleys, and most sensible people lay in bed fast asleep. Perhaps then it might come as little surprise that Ichika Zukumiki sat wide awake atop her family home's slanted roof. Tonight was a special night, and she had no intention of whiling it away in her bedroom.
With her head inclined to the heavens, she gazed upon the tapestry of the midnight sky. Littered with pinpricks of light, the sky appeared to be alive as streaks dashed across it with impunity. One shooting star led to another, then another, and another—luck, it seemed, begat luck. Or, the more logical side of the Uchiha's mind intruded, perhaps it was merely the meteor shower that had long been predicted. She much preferred the idea of luck, however, no matter what logic might imply.
She traced familiar constellations with an outstretched finger. Her father used to tell her that if she really tried she could reach out and hold a star in her hands. Of course, age dispelled the truth of this story, but the connection to her father through the ritual of attempted star catching remained all the same. Though her father's trips to Fire Country had become increasingly rare, Ichika still treasured the moments she spent with him as if they might be her last. Time, after all, had a funny way of stripping loved ones from one's life without remorse or mercy.

In truth, all the young teen had to remember her father were memories and his surname. The man made a habit of leaving no trace in his wake, save for his fractured family in Konoha. He would arrive one morning, stay for a week, and then be gone in the next week as if he were never there in the first place. Ichika had gotten used to his comings and goings and made the most of each trip, simply content to spend time with her father. Much like her mother, Ichika wouldn't trade the time with the Zukumiki scion for the world, she loved her father dearly.
Besides stargazing, the man always took a keen interest in his daughter's career as a kunoichi. When she was in the academy, he would quiz her on what she'd learned in the classroom and show her different tips and tricks he had learned in Rice Country. Even now, lying beneath the stars, she could remember the sparring matches they had. Though they always ended in the teen's defeat, she held each memory close to her heart as if letting go of them for an instant would dim the memories themselves.
Somewhere in the distance, the screech of a cat brought the Uchiha girl back to reality. So much had changed in Konohagakure as of late, and even the once familiar sounds of the Uchiha district sounded foreign. Freed from the yoke of Kirigakure, the village could once again plot its own destiny. And, under the stars, Ichika could not help letting her mind wander to the question that dogged many young adults throughout the shinobi world and beyond: where did she fit in all this and what was next?
Only time would tell.
