Short Dreams - Yurei

Yurei sat within kamui. The stagnant air would strike some as difficult to breathe, yet for Yurei it was perhaps even easier than the air of the world he’d been born to - weather plain or mountain. This place was undisturbed, immovable. It was the ultimate defense, for it knew no bounds, nor did any know of it. Yurei’s personal domain. It was also the ultimate shelter. He could bring Damon here if he chose to, he had in the past, but he often retreated here when the bustle of the world grew too great to comfortably focus in. 

Not unaccustomed to combat, Yurei was more than capable of thinking thoroughly, planning, or acting in battle. Villages or cities were no different. In fact, Yurei had often trained himself in such conditions as a test of endurance or clarity. 

This was simply a means of relaxation.

The Uchiha found solace in rain, snow, or a soft breeze on a summer’s day. Yet there was no place he felt more free, more at peace, than in Kamui. Its distant pillars, bobbing in an ocean of darkness. The lack of life,  completely and utterly. The quiet, so much thus that Yurei could hear the beating of his heart within his chest. Through his ears. Through his fingers.

And then he woke, rising from his slumber. The thunderstorms grew louder, quacking the cave. He turned, mask withdrawn from his face. Damon sat sleeping, soundly, by the looks of it. Yurei had always been the insomniac between the two - still was. 

It had been quite some time since he’d visited kamui. The sensation was always there. It had been since he’d unlocked his mangekyou sharingan. He had been bound -  tethered to that world since the sorrow that summoned his eyes. And now, traveling for days, weeks, he could not afford to leave Damon, and most time spent within Kamui was at the cost of their travels. Time was always of the essence, more so than any commodity Yurei had ever come across. Despite the effort he and Damon had put into helping others, it seemed the larger shinobi world could only grow more and more dangerous.
