The Little Fish-Cutter [Fishing Tournament]

… Okay, yeah, he did throw the handful of mealworms into the waters, but nothing really happened. At first, though, he spotted that some mealworms were being taken up by nearby fish, but none of them aimed for the mealworm attached to his hook. Damn it, it was such a foolproof plan, though… did they see through his planning? Were the fish that genius?!
 
He had to change strategy… it had been another half hour now, and his bait was still floating in the water. All the other mealworms were taken up, and it looked like this was the end of the road… but that was when he heard the distant words of his mother; the spear on his back would prove useful when the fishing rod became unreliable. The bigger fish would be easier to catch due to slower speeds, and then Kojirou wouldn’t have to sit on his butt all day!
 
Deciding that it was the best route to take now, Kojirou unrobed himself until he was in his undies, then equipped the short spear from his back. The fishing rod was laid down to rest, and then he breathed in deeply.
 
… Oh damn, the ocean was vast. Upon diving in, Kojirou realized just how many fish were in the sea, but… most of them were small. Really small. He needed to catch bigger prey, and they would often seek lower levels. Kojirou began wobbling his way into lower levels to look around for a few seconds before spotting some shadow pass by him in a hurry. He thrusted his spear in fright, and…

Damn it, he missed… that shadow was far too big to be an ordinary fish. But he needed to breathe, so Kojirou abandoned his post and swam up to the surface where he coughed a little. Despite his shinobi training, even he couldn’t hold his breath indefinitely… but he had heard of secret Jutsu that allowed one to do so. He should’ve sought that out more, for it would’ve proved crucial to today’s contest.
 
His luck… was low, but he wasn’t giving up just yet. After taking in another deep breath, he returned to the inner world of water and swam around. He didn’t want to approach the other boats, so the only path was downwards – down to what looked like the grassy plains of Tanbogakure, made of tall and flimsy-looking grasses. Maybe fish desired to blend in with them, so Kojirou held his breath and looked around.
 
The grasses were all green, and yet he couldn’t spot a single fish among them. Were they camouflaged well, or were the grasses just deserted? They looked like the perfect hiding spots for many species, including the large fish that he had just caught! It was annoying to look around in vain, for he had to catch his breath again… oh!
 
There was that shadow again! It wasn’t getting away this time, no way! Kojirou felt a surge of adrenaline shoot up in him and propelled himself forward, lunging the short spear of his in the direction where the moving shadow was about to appear in.

Yes! He managed to skewer whatever that shadow was! Kojirou’s adrenaline shot through the roof, but now he had to seek up to the surface again, before he kicked the bucket. Urgh, that fish was a little heavy, actually… but upon reaching the surface, more light came shining down to illuminate the fish’s form. It was… scary! Holy crap, that was one creepy fish!
 
Upon reaching the surface and coughing his brains out, Kojirou forced himself up on the boat and inspected the fish skewered through his spear. It was… wait, he had a book; uhhh… Itsumade, or woefish. Why was it called a woefish, though? Had he caused it pain? He made sure to skewer it quickly! The fish looked dead, right? It wasn’t going to rise up as a ghost and haunt him for the rest of his life, was it?! Right?!
 
… Shaking that fear aside, it was about as heavy as the other fish that he caught. He had to try a few more times, just to see if his luck would bring him something truly heavy. He forgot the exact measurements for the record holder, but it was higher than 15 pounds, so if he wanted to beat that, then he’d have to catch a fish that weighed as much as a child.
 
Therefore, after catching his breath, he leapt down again and spotted that his hunt down in the grasses had stirred up a dust storm. Feeling extra lucky, he thrusted his spear forward…
