The Little Fish-Cutter [Fishing Tournament]
Sun May 01, 2022 10:36 am
Maybe he was a little too excited for this tournament… but fishing was an old sport, and Kojirou did remember fishing a few times with his pops before the latter’s disappearance. BUT! This was an official competition, so plenty of other Rice Country citizens – shinobi, samurai, merchants, farmers, smiths, medics and everyone in between – were aiming for the oceans contouring the Rice Country where the competition took place.
Kojirou had prepared himself a thick-branched fishing rod and bait, which was able to be skewered on the crook at the end of a several meters long metal thread. At first, Kojirou was content with this as his equipment, but his mother had stopped him in his tracks on the way out of the door back home. Apparently, depending on the fishing rod alone wasn’t enough – the fishes of the big sea were cunning and mighty, and Kojirou was still a little green between his arms. Therefore, his dear mother strapped a short spear onto his back as a last resort, should the fishing rod be jabbed off from his reach.
The cranking sound of wood kept him company as he pushed his boat out into the waters. While the sea was huge, he could make out plenty of other boats with participants on them. Was Hayato among them too?
Thinking that he wouldn’t want to lose, Kojirou began to focus and attach his bait onto the crook of his fishing line. It was a fat snail, ideal food for these leviathans.
And the line was then swung out at full might…

Damn, that fish was heavy… Kojirou felt like his fingers were being cut by its scales, but with enough effort and manpower, he managed to reel the fish up onto the boat. A quick slice with his short spear would take the fish out of its misery, and then the Rice Cutter would sigh in relief.
It was heavy, alright. At least 15 pounds, right there… but that wouldn’t be enough. The record holder’s fish was heavier, so he had to try again. With contests like these, Kojirou prayed that the god of the sea would be kind to him and bring him the heaviest catch in the entire country.
The other fishers around were getting quite good catches as well… but he did remember that only the best catch would participate in the contest. He had time to go for another catch, so the Rice Cutter gently pulled the hook off of the dead fish’s mouth and applied another bait onto it. It was also… maybe a tad too easy the first time; this fish just darted towards the bait like a torpedo, but there were smarter fish out there. Kojirou could feel the dooming presence of misfortune collapse over him, and he began doubting.
No… his doubts would prove no good. He had to try again, and again, and again, until he got the best catch possible. And he had to make sure that he’d make it back to the shore in time, so off you go, hook!

… Hmh. No catch at first. Maybe the first catch had scared the rest of the fish away from his boat, and despite having made some distance from the other competitors, the waters were quite not calm yet for a catch to take place. This was the time where Kojirou had to just wait it out, let the waters settle and… huh… he should’ve brought a book. This was getting angsty.
The boat kept rocking along the waves, and the previous fish looked like it was spiriting away at any moment. Kojirou could feel his mind lose focus on the fishing rod and start paying attention to the reflections in the salty water. He could see himself and his monotone face, but he could also spot… fish!
He didn’t want to move too quickly, or he’d end up scaring them away… but there were plenty of fish down there. And yet, maybe they had witnessed the fall of their big friend and/or foe before, thus teaching them to be wary of the nice bait that was floating around at the moment. Now, too much movement would prove detrimental and only end up scaring more fish away, but… Kojirou gathered his focus again and grabbed his fishing rod one more time.
Gently, he rocked the fishing rod from side to side. The bait would follow the movements of its string, floating gently to the right and to the left like a spell or the light bulb of one of those… what were they called again, anglerfish?

He believed that rocking the bait from side to side like this would, perhaps, lure some eager fish towards the obviously ‘live’ bait like a spell and reel them in, but upon looking at the surface of the waters again, Kojirou noticed that it merely scared all the other fish away. They were sharp, those little brats… they were clearly aware of the dangers of those baits now. It had been, like, half an hour now, and maybe… just maybe… Kojirou had to approach the other fishers? Maybe moving the boat around a little would increase his chances of catching prey.
Laying the fishing rod down while the snare and bait were still in the waters, Kojirou grabbed his paddle and pushed the boat closer to some other fishers. There were plenty of Tanbo citizens that he recognized, but also a handful strangers that he had never met before… but he had an objective to focus on. He could socialize afterwards.
Now that the waters were shaken up a bit, Kojirou took a glance at the bait on the hook. He used snails at first, but maybe the fish weren’t all big fans of snails, so he plucked the snail off and dropped it on the boat next to himself. Sticking his hand into a nearby bucket, he pulled up a bunch of mealworms and got an idea; if he threw a bunch of them in the water along with one mealworm hooked to his snare, then plenty of fish would try and get a bite and realize that they weren’t being reeled up. That would lure more fish, and- dear, that was genius!
In you go, mealworms!
