Re: SHARK
Wed Aug 03, 2022 9:50 am
Spending his days at the beach wasn't even close to getting old for the road-weary traveler from the land of rivers. The little makeshift hut he had constructed some distance into the woods has continued to serve him well- even against the storms that have managed to close the beach for days on end. After the first one had collapsed against the whipping winds in the midst of the night and offered him a rather rude- and wet- awakening, he had doubled his efforts in making sure that he would at least be able to wait till morning before he had to deal with any significant structural damage. The following days spent on the beach and talking with the locals had taught him how to better be warned of inclement weather when it threatened to strike. A skill that Joski would be thankful he learned in time.
Away from the woods and onto the beach, Joski found himself posted against one of the larger rocks on the beach, a boulder that likely had been washed ashore some time ago. Wide rimmed sunglasses sat atop his nose, his usual mask having been transformed into something a little more appropriate for the beach that wouldn't draw so many strange looks from people. After all, it's awfully hard to relax in the sun when you have people gawking at you for wearing a painted mask. His open shirt allowed him to continue working on the wonderful tan he had been nursing over the past couple of weeks, well past the point of the terrible peeling that came with a sunburn, and now able to put some color on his typically pale physique.
The sound of the ocean was not the only noise that was gracing his ears today, however. Situated next to him was an older man that Joski had come to recognize as Kaidu, a local to the area and an older guy who had taken it upon himself to make sure that people at the beach were being safe. Joski had no idea how old he was or how long he had been doing it, but the guy had genuine care for the safety of people on the beach, and that alone was pretty cool. The two had met during one of Joski's stints as a watcher, the two of them starting with idle chatter and meetings of coincidence until it simply felt normal to greet each other when either of them spotted the other. "I'm telling you, man, that beast is out there somewhere. I keep hearing stories of the monster snatching people right off the beach...Uh oh, speaking of..." Kaidu had cut himself off as he spotted something out in the water.
Following his gaze, Joski would spot two girls that had gone out into the waves around the area Kaidu had just been speaking to him about this beast. A creature called a shark. It reminded Joski of a particular type of river eel from his homeland that was said to pull travelers beneath the water though apparently, this shark was much more dangerous than any eel. "You better go save them, Mr. Hero," Joski offered back in reply, snaking his hands behind his own head to lace his fingers and offer his head a softer surface than stone to rest against.
Kaidu nudged Joski in the ribs with an elbow before taking off into the water and calling to the two girls in the distance. He couldn't exactly make out what they were saying, but the two girls didn't seem particularly impressed by whatever is was Kaidu was saying. Joski watched the interaction before a flicker of a shadow beneath the waves caught his attention. It might have been easy to miss if it wasn't so massive, the unmistakable movement of some creature stalking the waves as it moved its way along the shore. A chill splintered down Joski's spine as he stood up from his position. "That's not good..." he thought to himself, watching the shadow move in the water as it seemed to notice something.
While Kaidu had successfully managed to convince the two girls that coming back to shore was the smarter idea, the creature had caught wind of easy prey. By the time a scream of "Shark!" came from the beach, the distance was already beginning to close, and Joski could easily draw a straight line towards a few people that were further out into the waves; they certainly weren't going to be making it back to shore if that monstrous beast had honed in on them. "That's really not good!" Joski thought to himself, his mind racing as he considered his options. He knew some shinobi abilities he had picked up along the way, even one he had managed to snag from a shady-looking merchant on the road, but none of them were going to be of any help if that shark made it to the stranded group.
The time for thinking had ended, and Joski's feet began to move without him remembering to tell them to do so. Chakra gathered at the soles of his feet, allowing him to begin traversing the sand and then the water at speeds unparalleled. Dashing across the surface of the water, Joski pushed himself harder than he had to in manner years, but could plainly tell that his supernatural speed wasn't going to be enough to get to the shark before the shark began mingling with the panicked swimmers, all of whom were now splashing and thrashing in terror in an attempt to reach the shore.
"Shit.." he cursed quietly, reaching into his shorts and withdrawing a small knife that he kept on his person; the instrument was largely kept for utility and wasn't large enough to be an effective weapon- particularly against something like this shark. "Okay, carefully now, don't overdo it." Coming to a stop now almost a hundred feet from the shore, Joski would carefully place the blade to the tip of one of his fingers and pull it down a small way. Almost instantly, a droplet of blood would run over his finger and drip into the salty water below where Joski would then thrust his hand. Kaidu had mentioned that this sort of beast could easily smell blood in the water and was even attracted to it, so instead of allowing himself to be helpless as the swimmers were attacked, Joski would hope to draw the beast with an offering of his own.
The blood-colored the water quickly, rivets of red threading through the unseen weave of the current that made the waves. That massive fin shifted and turned, now pointed in the direction of Joski and making way directly towards the boy with all the same killer speed it had shown already. He had succeeded, the shark was heading to him instead of the swimmers. Only in the realization of his success did Joski consider what he was going to do next. The attention was on him, but he only had a knife and some unpracticed jutsu to his name. That chill returned to his blood as he watched the water ripple and be displaced by the massive body surging towards him. "Crap...now what?"

Help from the beach. Thank the stars above that there was someone else nearby willing to help. The harpoons were a boon, but Joski hadn't expected the two girls from earlier to get involved. Where they trained in the same arts as him? It didn't appear so given that neither of them seemed to produce any manner of grand effect that could be seen anyway. This didn't dampen their bravery, however, as Joski watched the two of them charge at the beast with the produced weapons from another arts user. Standing on the water as he was, he got a front row seat to the one girl being dragged across the surface of the water with a death grip on her weapon while the other sprinted to intercept. Thankfully he wasn't the only quick thinking one around here, but quick wit and bravery alone weren't going to be enough to extinguish this beast. Joski's eyes widened as the two girls were flung carelessly across the water, skimming its surface before vanishing beneath the waves.
Looking back to the monster, Joski would see the beast turn and pause in its moving as it considered its options. One harpoon stuck from its eye making it a perfectly clear marker above the water showing Joski perfectly where it was. And where it was, was nowhere near anyone else. "Now is the time!" Joski called internally, his hands already flying into making seals as he prepared to stop the threat here and now. The fabric of space-time began to warp around the traveler, shifting and undulating as Joski wove the seals he knew would bring about its manipulation, though once he finished, the effect would not appear around him but instead would manifest in a rather brilliant but subtle display. Beneath the shark, a point of gravity would begin to fluctuate before expanding outwards, grabbing a sphere of water and the shark before pulling it all downward, creating a thin disc of churning water in a field, almost like someone had come along and taken a big scoop out of the ocean and the water couldn't fill it in. Waves rippled from the area outward as the shark vanished beneath the surface, compressed against the bottom of the sea floor.
Approaching, Joski would look over the edge of the hole he had created, watching the body of the shark squirm and thrash against the increased gravity but going nowhere. Just as he intended. Kaidu had mentioned that sharks need to keep swimming in order to breathe, and the gravitation forces now crushing the creature were also preventing it from moving, but what really did it in was that harpoon. Slowly, painstakingly, that harpoon would find purchase into the body of the shark as it was pulled down slowly before all at once vanishing into the body of the shark, spurting forth innard and no shortage of blood that quickly filled the disk of water being compressed by the technique. Miraculously, the shark continued to thrash and fight against the pull, but once the technique lifted, it was stuck to the ocean floor by that harpoon now having embedded itself in the ground beneath the shark. It was a slow and gruesome demise that dirtied the waters, but ultimately, the shark would stop moving and find its final resting spot just beneath the surface some hundred and fifty feet from the shoreline.
Back on the shore, Joski would approach the two girls while wrapping a cloth around his still bleeding finger. "Hey, you two alright? Those were some crazy moves you two pulled. I don't know if you are locals or something, but thanks for the help. You saved me, and a bunch of others." Joski offered them a smile alongside his words, though the others that he had mentioned were quickly rushing up the beach towards the group of them, forming a small crowd around them and offering each of them gratitude for their quick action. Barging through the crowd was a rather stocky figure who wore a green sash that indicated him as a sort of authority figure- the closest thing the village had to a guard.
"Hey! Were you two involved with killing that shark? Was anyone else hurt? Where was it that you first spotted it?" A barrage of questions would hail down on the two girls amid more offerings of thanks from the locals, but despite having failed to offer his name- or anything else for that matter- Joski seemed to have simply vanished at some point when the crowd arrived. Look around as they might, the young man seemed to have evaporated amongst the others in the crowd. From the distance, Joski would peer from beyond a small fern of concealment that he had managed to slip away to, making note of both of those girls that now took his place amid the crowd before turning and making a quiet departure. Perhaps, should fate permit, they might meet again.
